DIG Vass Gunawardena was arrested on June 10 and who is now under detention orders.
The Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen was informed yesterday by the CID regarding the threat when producing a report on the progress of the investigation into the killing of businessman Mohamed Shyam Huzamdeen. ASP Shani Abeysekara informed Court that the statement of the suspect DIG has posed a threat to the lives of the officials who are investigating the DIG‘s criminal activities and his involvement in the murder of the millionaire businessman, as well as their families.
Following investigations conducted into the incident, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on June 06 arrested Sub-Inspector Lakmini Bamunusinghe, attached to the office of the DIG Western Province (North), along with three Police Constables (PCs) serving in the DIG’s special unit.
Upon interrogating the arrested police officers, the CID uncovered information regarding the DIG’s alleged involvement in the businessman’s murder .
According to the state run Daily News the CID filing a B report before Additional Magistrate Shaheed yesterday said suspect Chutta had told them that DIG Vaas Gunawardena was allegedly given Rs. one million out of Rs. 30 million agreed in the contract to kill business tycoon Mohomed Siyam.
Chutta was arrested and Rs. 400,000 was recovered from his possession.

Mr Vass Gunawardene is known to me for the last 7 years as I was his wife’s lawyer in two partition cases at Kurunegala District Courts. As a result of these cases all brothers and sisters of his wife got equal shares in both cases(both properties). He consulted me for long hours. He fully believed that the justice would be done in the cases and provided me with all relevant facts. During these years I saw his popularity was growing which I thought would bring him a disaster. According to what I read, although DIG Vaas was taken into custody under PTA the SOD has not signed (or refused to sign) the order under PTA to keep him three months without being produced before courts. My understanding is that, that is why ultimately the CID special team (under direct orders from the IGP) had to go to courts within 72 hours to get him remanded. If anyone thinks that SOD approved all these happened so far, such person(s) is/are in a dream world. If he sanctioned DIG could have been kept him under custody for three months without producing him in courts.

July 19, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today granted permission to the counsel appearing for a senior police officer arrested in the homicide of a businessman to produce written evidence on the case to the courts.
Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Sahabdeen today granted the permission to the counsel appearing for the arrested former Deputy Inspector General of Police Vass Gunawardena to submit written evidence on the murder case on August 01.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced seven suspects including Vaas Gunawardena in court today and the court ordered to further remand them until August 01.
The seven suspects are charged with the abduction and contract killing of Mohamed Shyam, a millionaire businessman in Bambalapitiya.
A business colleague of the 35-year-old victim had contracted the police officers to kill the businessman and the investigations led to the arrest of the suspects including three police officers forthe crime. The contract killing was undertaken for a fee of Rs. 3 million.
Former DIG Vas Gunawardena’s son Ravindu Gunawardena is also one of the suspects.
