I finally Went To Chennai: Role Of India Is crucial

By Vickramabahu Karunaratne –

Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne

I finally went to Chennai and participated in Tamil Elam Supporters Organization (TESO) conference and the public meeting. The whole thing was effective in raising the plight of the Elam Tamils. Even for a Marxist revolutionary there was a space to intervene with out conceding any principle. Though near 90 years of age, DMK leader Karunanidi, is very alert and active. From a wheelchair he was guiding the whole operation; keenly following the entire discussion. His son Stalin led the organizing of the event. He reminded me of late Vijaya, handsome and charming. Obviously it was a bourgeoisie event.

I felt they urgently needed to pacify the masses looking towards them. There is dissatisfaction about the role the DMK played during the war that was supported by  Sonia Gandhi. They had to come out and condemn the genocidal attack on the Tamil people and show a path to go forward. They were determined to mobilize masses and voice the misery of the Lankan Tamil people. This opened the door for NSSP to participate. The government and Jayalalitha tried every trick to stop the mobilization of the people. They tried to limit it to a hotel room discussion, away from the masses. Police orders, court orders and security warnings were given one after the other. Stalin led the battle for freedom of expression and finally both the conference in the morning and the rally in the afternoon were successful.
As expected the draft resolutions document was a liberal appeal to the Indian leaders and to the UN. But it sharply condemned the war, the continuation of military rule and the oppression. Also it condemned plunder of the Tamil homeland under the pretext of development. Actual recommendations were similar to that of the LLRC. I pointed out that both the Indian leaders and global powers were foremost supporters of the war of Mahinda and still supporting him, in the present development programme. In that scenario we need to go beyond the formality of appealing to the imperialist masters. We must go to the masses and appeal to the oppressed in the world to incorporate the demands of the Elam Tamils among their items of struggle. Also, I explained that we are already giving a battle to the repressive Mahinda regime as the protest of the opposition, the Vipakshaye Virodaya. In the VV all are agreed to campaigning for the implementation of the LLRC recommendations and also to press the government, to call a parliamentary select committee, to discus the Acton Plan for implementing these recommendations.

They said they are not against that and in fact the evening event is a beginning of mass activation. Further more I explained that Sinhalisation is only a populist pretext for grabbing the resources and land of the Tamil people, to sell these to alien economic powers, basically multinational corporations. Poor peasants and fishers of the Sinhala community have not gained any thing from this war. On the contrary they also lost their kith and kin, and are now enslaved by the new agreements with the international money lenders.
The evening event was a massive mass mobilization. It was a resounding defeat for those who wanted it to be a flop. Some said it was seventy thousand; almost all agreed it was more than 30,000. From 4 pm until 9pm they were there, listening and cheering. I was amazed that so many understood speeches made in English. They listened silently to my speech. I explained the miserable situation in the country. Now, not only in the north but also in the south people are fed up with Mahinda regime. Struggles of workers, peasants, fishers and students are continuing. Government has reacted by launching repression which killed workers and fishers. The agitations of the VV, protest of the opposition, have been successful. Our campaigns for the implementation of the LLRC RECOMMENDATIONS have a serious effect on both the government and the civil society. In this scenario the government leaders rest on their foreign masters. Role of India is crucial. If TESO can mobilize in this manner, not only in Tamil Nadu but also in other parts of India as well as internationally, that could change the political parameters in Lankan society.

Dr. Karunaratne. You are a real hero and a real Man.You stood up for the injustice faced by all the suppressed and oppressed people and to find justice for them irrespective of their race and religion through peaceful manner when the leaders are lagging to find justice for them. I wonder what the other opposition parties represent and what their priorities are.Solving problems with a collective partnership is far more better than to face a repeat of another 1971, 83 and 89 where scores were sacrificed searching for solutions.

Ofcourse he is a real man a hero and whole world is waiting for the truth coming out of the mouth to act … Mighty India was so afraid and murdered his speech half way ….. This is how it was reported in media …. “The Nawa Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) Leader Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne was literally told to shut up by the TESO on Sunday, when he was prevented from continuing with his speech at the inaugural session of the contentious conference. The embarrassing incident happened when he accused India of being partly responsible for the grievances of the Lankan Tamils.”
What a guy … At least , he must have come to the reality that there are countries other than SL (world famous boogeyboy for all the sins on earth) behaving pathetic way ….
He must really have surprised at what happend even though his uplifting heroic positive deliberations here …
He must be … pondering ” How could I be treated as a superman when I could squeeze in all my supporters of whole Sri Lanka in a three wheel” …
That is why I always say mighty India should solve it’s toilet problem before attending to any other thing … Other things being “dreaming to be a leader in that part of the world or to be super power ” …..

    Bahu:
Even if one disagrees with you and your opinions, you are one of the few people left in this country with the courage of his conviction and who is prepared to speak up without fear of a murderous regime which is now openly threatening you.
More strength to you and your bravery!

I certainly agree with the courage of conviction … I go further than that … I really admire him being straight forward  in any issues …. Tamil homeland, communism, revolution …. without hiding as some others ..
Of course, with all his maturity, he does not care about the dynamism and changes occurring around the world … His recalcitrant attitude does not permit to see the reality because his garbage (centuries old,  expired, unpractical theories) is extremely heavy …. So, almost all ideas he put forward belong to the ‘bs’ basket … But I admire  his will of pulling the cart of the garbage without any shame … it itself is hard act to follow … He is very much different compared to his old buddy, Kumar David … Because, he is fighting in the forefront physically not like depending on ‘hope that  Australian citizen Premakumar Gunarathnam would come and save us from narrow sinhalese nationalism and chauvinism’ ….
By the way, I havs a humble appeal to Bahu ..
Do not go any where to preach … Stay in SL … whatever said and done, you had/have the freedom of preaching except for few instances like under JR … Otherwise, you had the full turf almost free to preach for last 50-60 years … Not like in the land which needs at least half a billion toilets …

        Bruno Umbato:
I am going to propose to whoever is responsible for the next revision of the Roget’s Thesaurus, that, based on your contributions to this and other websites, a new hyphenated word be added to English usage as a synonym for “idiot” and that it be “bruno-umbato.”
I trust that will make you puff out your chest in pride!

Bahu is a fearless and courageous politician who has long ago seen through the hypocracy of the Sinhala supremacist cabal. He cannot be fooled this lot gives two hoots for the Motherland, the Sinhala race or Buddhism. All they want is to use this cry to climb the political ladder like those fake-nationalists Weerawansa, Champike Ranawake et al. Give a thought to what these two were before they entered politics and what wealth they own today.

Many forget Bahu fights for justice for Tamils, Sinhlaese, Muslim and others in all four corners of the country. He has created far more consciousness both in Sri Lanka and India on the plight of Lankan Tamils, denied even their representatie rights to elect their own PC in the North, via this TESO meeting.

But, like many, I doubt Karunanidhi’s sincerity for the Lankan Tamils via this TESO Meeting. This is an exercise to bring Karunanidhi and his son MK Stalin to prominence and limelight after their predicted debacle in the last elections – easily won by that other Goddess of Bribery-Corruption – Selvi JJ. The corruption-scandal tainted MK will be a has-been soon and Stalin will have to fight a losing battle against his stronger brother Alaghiri for the mantle of the DMK. Karunanidhi did far less for Lankan Tamils during the 2008/2009 when he was busy building mega-fortunes for his 2nd wife, daughter and sons. He almost had his neck cut by the scheming Maran Brothers until Alaghiri moved in and threw them out of Cabinet, the DMK and the family. Where were the Maran Brothers and Alaghiri during the TESO Conference? That alone shows how shallow DMK as a united Party was in the cause of Lankan Tamils.

I will bring this matter to the attention of the US State Department which really needs to reign in our ostensible “ally” India, the ONLY nation with which we share nuclear secrets, to stop providing safe haven for these type of gatherings of terrorists. PM Singh apparently failed to get the message from what happened to the last Indian PM to say no to the LTTE. As long as you tell them yes, they are sweetness and light, but once you draw the line in the sand they quickly turn the guns and training you gave them in your direction. Apparently the adage “dont bite the hands that feeds you does not translate into Tamil.

But Delhi is not the only dupe in this instance. My government is equally myopic.

After more than a decade in Afghanistan trying to eradicate Al Qaeda’s original safe haven, we now are allowing India to reincarnate its slain bastard child the LTTE. Further, we emboldened Delhi by sponsoring the misguided resolution at the UN back in March.

Why cannot those who so desperately want
Eelam find it in Tamil Nadu? Why must it take Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern Provinces for its Shangri La?.

TESO was not an LTTE meeting. EELAM is an ancient description of the Tamil areas in the Island of Ceylon/Sri Lanka. Remember the Rajapakse Govt has, as its valued allies, parties openly and proudly having this description in their party identification. It will be foolish to attack the Indian Govt for allowing this description while the Rajapakse Govt allows its allies to use it.

“TESO was not an LTTE meeting …”
      What unmitigated balderdash and Bunkum!

Ha ha, most pro-LTTEers distance themselves from LTTE logo these days, but TESO was a LTTE meeting organised by LTTE for LTTE. Bahu clearly identified himself as the LTTE mouthpiece in Colombo in his hogwash at LTTE meetings, especially at the London one on the 26 November two years ago.No surprise this servile self-seeker, who has no voterbase in Colombo, who always attempts to win favour by flattering anybody, went to meet other sycophants!Karunanidhi of fast-unto-lunch fame said “with your support I will take up the struggle to achieve the dream of Tamil Eelam” at this gathering of worms.

As in the case of the Citizenship Act of the late 1940s, Federalism Bogey of the mid-1950s, the Separatism delusion of the 1980/90s
and the current creation of the Diaspora billa keeping the Sinhala South under imaginary fears wins elections – often handsomely. But all these bubbles gradually fade away while the country is further consigned to economic ruin, disunity and racial rancour. This blog is not short of these pseudo-patriots too – who, either misread history or simply spread racial prejudice and anti-Indianism. There are many in the higher levels of government who fall into this category – but they,
nonetheless, are quick to say they are for unity and even line up to
bow down at the Kapilavastu relicts singing hossanas to India and Indians. Still 24×7 they rail India for trying to divide Sri Lanka and destroy Buddhism here. When the Govt courts investors they say terrorism and the LTTE was slayed 3 years ago and the country is now free of all real/imagined threats. But simultaneously, speaking to a local audince it helps to say the LTTE is still there are re-grouping. This is more to sorround themselves with hundreds of security men and travel in the roads in style. Even their ratharan putha/duwas visiting the 5-star night-clubs are provided for with this security.

This double speak has been exposed years ago both in the region, the UN and the world. The sooner we learn to recognise who our friends are the better for the country. Equally urgent is the need to bring peace and unity to that part of the country that has been long denied its right to have their own ruling Councils.

The Sinhala South is gradually coming out of its stupor. The Malwatte Prelate says in as much the Sangha, Govi, Guru, Weda, Kamkaru Balavegaya ushered in the Peoples Revolution of 1956 the very same Pancha Balavegaya is now in the streets asking for change. They cannot be fooled for far too long with underworld goons, armed STF men and the lot. The people’s hunger and anger will find a way for popular expression.
