‘I Was Sent Back When I Went To Meet Lt. Colonel Gotabaya To Plead The Release Of My Sons’ – A Mother

By Colombo Telegraph

Ceylon Today newspaper on Sunday published a harrowing tale of a mother whose two teenage sons were abducted by the military on December 13, 1989 and how she was turned back when she went to see then military coordinating officer of Matale, Lt Colonel Gotabaya Rajapaksa to plead for the release of her two detained sons. Her sons never came home again and Gotabaya Rajapaksa later left the army and domiciled in the United States of America. He returned to Sri Lanka upon the election of his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa and is now the powerful secretary to the ministry of defence. We reproduced the full story below, which first appeared in Ceylon Today dated April 7, 2013.

“We were at a loss. Here, Mahinda Rajapaksa was campaigning on behalf of the children who had  been abducted, and I could not believe that his brother was in the Army at the same time,” the mother said.

By Ranga Jayasuriya

A grieving mother of two teenage sons who were abducted by the Army in 1989, narrates how she was stopped and sent back when she went to meet then Military Coordinating Officer (MCO) for Matale, Lt. Col. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa - Top Left

The two teenage sons of K.G. Kamalawathi were snatched by the soldiers who arrived at her residence during a notorious ‘military round up’ of local youth on 13 December 1989. The two teenagers, Susantha Janaka (18) and Rohana Nishantha (17), were GCE Advanced Level students at Science College and Vijaya Vidyalaya, Matale.

The two boys were having their lunch when the military unceremoniously entered their home at Warakanda Watta, Ukuwela, Matale, and took them to the Rest House Camp, near Vijaya Vidyalaya, which was located in the vicinity of the current mass grave at the backyard of the Matale Hospital, from where 154 skeleton remains dating back to 1986-89 as stated in the investigations, had been uncovered.

“Thirteen other boys from the village were also taken on by the Army that day,” recalls Kamalawathi.

“When my children were taken by the Army, I followed them. They were taken to the Rest House Camp, located near Vijaya Vidyalaya. I asked that I be allowed to talk to my sons, but the soldiers refused.”

Kamalawathi - the mother

Kamalawathi visited the Army camp the following day and once again she had been denied permission to see her sons.

“On the third day, a soldier read out from a list the names of the children who had been held in the camp. Some names had been cut off with a red pen and the names of my two sons had also been cut off, in red,” she said.

Kamalawathi had arrived in Matale only four months before, after being driven away from Pulmudai by the Tamil Tigers.

“My husband was dead and I was looking after four children on my own,” she explained.

Kamalawathi had pleaded with a soldier, who she remembers as U.P.R Perera, to be allowed to see her sons. He had gone into the camp and had returned to tell her that her two sons were kept in the camp, but she could not be allowed to see them.

No one to turn to

A grieving widowed mother, who was new to Matale, she had no one to turn to, for help.

It was at that point she had come to know that Nandimithra  Ekanayake, now a minister of the current government, was helping the families of the disappeared.

She sought his help and he had promised to do ‘whatever he could,’ recalls Kamalawathi.

Rohana Nishantha

Nandimitra Ekanayake had subsequently told her that he sent his secretary to the Rest House Camp and that her two sons had been held there.

Later, he told her to go and meet the Military Coordinating Officer who was identified as Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

“We were at a loss. Here, Mahinda Rajapaksa was campaigning on behalf of the children who had  been abducted, and I could not believe that his brother was in the Army at the same time,” she said.

However, she decided to go and meet him. Nandimithra had told her that he had contacted Gotabhaya Rajapaksa over the two detained youth.

“But, when I went to meet him, I was stopped at the gate by a soldier called Corporal Silva. He told me I could not meet the MCO and I was ordered to leave the place,” she said.

Devastated, Kamalawathi continued to visit the  Rest House camp every day from the day her children had been taken by the Army.

The soldiers had ‘tricked’ her by sending her to different camps that dotted Matale at the time, claiming that her two sons were transferred from one  camp to another.

She pleaded for help from the Red Cross and wrote to UN agencies for help, some of which acknowledged the receipt of her letters. But, no one could get her children released from military custody. Months later, some local boys were released from military custody. They told her that they, along with her sons, had been taken to the ‘Red Bana Camp,’ and that they also spent time in a military camp, which was operating from Vijaya Vidyalaya, where the Gajaba Regiment was alleged to have operated a torture chamber.

Susantha Janaka

However, her two sons never returned and Kamalawathi, shattered and helpless, had given up on her search.

Later, when the Chandrika Kumaratunga administration offered death certificates for the disappeared youth, she refused to accept death certificates for her two sons.

“I am coming forward now to tell the story because I want justice for my sons. I don’t know whether justice will ever be delivered,” she said.

Several years after the abduction of her two sons, Alick Aluvihare, the UNP strongman at the time in Matale had contacted Kamalawathi.

“He asked me why I did not tell him about my sons. He could have saved them, he said. But how could I seek help from those who commissioned the crime. It was they who had authorized those crimes,” she added. By now, she may know that it was not only the  Aluvihares who were behind the incident. There are others too, some of who still remain all powerful.

‘It could have been an exception’

When Ceylon Today contacted Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake, he said he could not remember this particular incident involving Mrs.  Kamalawathi, but added that he took up ‘countless’ cases of disappearances of local youth at that time.

“I was the only MP elected from the Opposition; the other four parliamentarians were from the UNP,” he said.

He also said Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Military Coordinating Officer of Matale at that time, had been very ‘cooperative’ (towards him) and ‘kind’ to the detained youth.

Even those youth who committed ‘the worst offences’ had been sent to rehabilitation camps, he said, adding, “That particular instance, (Kamalawathi’s) could have been an exception.”

What a cruel country we all live in. Wild animals behave better.

We live in a country ruled by corrupt, sadistic criminals from both SLFP and UNP. And a whole heap of smaller parties that survive as parasites of the two main parties.

I am not naive to believe things would have been better had the JVP managed to grab power either. They displayed induspuatble barbarity themselves.

A total lack of respect for the value of human life. As long as one can hold on to power or defend some silly ideology as a solution to all problems.

Apart from being ruthless, cold blooded killers most of these people in politics and in law enforcement claim to be fantastic followers of Gautama Buddha.

“Stinking Hypocrites” are not the right words. Let me go throw up now.

There’s a saying that what goes around, comes around. Time has come to open tha Pandora Box. Kamalawathie is the first case. Many more thousands will follow.

One is not Guilty until Proven. Yes, people will seek justice now, until GOSL prove they are guilty and it’s innocence.

A busdriver and the conductor sent to gallows when Kahawatte mass murderers are set free. Same, VIP criminals are set free after hitting and injuring Army Majors.

POORER IN THE HEAD THAN STOMACH; So many Kamalawathies…..

This Lt Colonel pretending he played a big part in Vadamarichi operation

Lt Colonels are not allowed to command more than 120 troops !!

What a heartbreaking situation for this poor lady. Without a husband, it would have been hard to find her sons, and in her situation, no one would have done much to help her.

This is done all in the name of war and security. To this day, we have thousands of people missing in this tiny nation, and no one can explain where they are. Human Rights activists have tried so hard to get the answers badly needed by families, and they have been attacked and insulted for their efforts.
We should be ashamed that we are apathetic and not speaking out for these poor people.

What about the hundreds of thousands of people killed in Syria, in the name of radical Wahhabist Islam? It took 30 years for 100K people to die in Sri Lanka, but not even 5 years for 100K to die in Syria. You should be ashamed that you are apathetic and not speaking out for the poor people in Syria. Your comrade Nabil has already expressed his support for the Sunni terror in Syria.

His sheds false tears for the Shia’s when inside him his very happy at the Shia – Sunni rift he is trying to propagate. What a vagabond. Speaking of Shame that is the a quality that Lester will not understand for generations. As I said before absolutely no relevance! Lester is trying to dilute the gravity of this tragedy by bringing in extraneous incidents.

Pork has high nutritional value. Pork provides protein, fat and a range of vitamins and minerals. Pork is an excellent source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Pork has a high protein content (around 20%). Protein is important for muscle building and for keeping organs healthy. Too bad your Holy Book told you lies. When you are tip cut and need women to wear bedsheets because of your *frustrations*, life is truly miserable.

Reading this story one can just imagine if Sinhala youth had been treated like this by the Sinhala armed forces, just how they must have treated Tamil youth during the 30 year “Humanitarian Operation.” It’s a shame how blind patriots still try to whitewash the atrocities of the armed forces.

“There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.”

Not to mention the horrendous crimes of the “Sole Rep of all Tamil speaking peoples”. The LTTE, lead by cruelest of the cruel, VP the “Sun God”. Amply supported by a willing LTTE diaspora overseas that funded the whole carnage. And organized the propaganda required to cover it up for 30 years. They have all turned HR activists since the “Debacle in Wanni” in may 2009. I can’t wait to see them in the dock one day.

        Ben Hurling:
We could start the process very easily by putting in the dock the significant leaders running free (and prospering) at the moment in Sri Lanka: K.P., the short man from the Eastern Province, Colonel Karuna, George and the other “Master” in the north etc. I wonder why they have not been charged?!

People mentioned in your list helped a lot in the downfall of the LTTE.

By doing so they cut a grand deal with GOSL. A bargain, if you will.

They are now considered repenting ex-terrorists. Rehabilitated and absorbed to society. Forgiven by GOSL & people to a large extent. Sri Lankan version of a “Truth Commission”.

Karuna who attacked “Temple of the tooth relic, Kandy” and lead the Aranthalawa monk massacre, now overnights at Temple Trees in Colombo. I have been told.

Ability of the Sri Lankan State to forgive, forget and move on is remarkable, when it suits them.

              Agree.

We need to take a total look at all crimes committed by all parties since Independence actually.

Not under pressure from international hypocrites. But, out of our won free will.

We need to firmly re-establish and permenantly entrench basic things like respect for every single human life, social justice and rule of law in our country.

Otherwise the hard won peace will be very short lived.

I am curious as to why Sri Lanka, MR, Gota and their henchmen are mute in demanding the extradition of Adele Balasingham?

Is there a deal between Sri Lanka and the UK that I am not aware of?

Prosecution of LTTE war criminals should have started with KP, Pillayan, Douglas, Karuna, …….Yogi.

Gota got away with mass murder then and he is getting away with mass murder now. His brother’s promise to institute a commission of inquiry will be an attempt to protect himself from blame. As usual the inquiry’s report will never see the light of day. The Matale victims and the Tamil victims of the last Eelam war will only get justice if an external inquiry is held. Gota will end up accused of torture and crimes against humanity in the international court of justice with his brother Mahinda. I can’t believe these two murderers go to the temple and pray to Lord Buddha.

I agree except with your statement that “as usual the inquiry’s report will never see the light of day”.
MaRa is now in a bettter position in that he has control over all institutions includung the judicary that he can appoint his henchmen who will not put out an adverse report.
For example the Army inquiry and report on the accusations of war crimes against the Army itself.

Very true. So, what I have been repeatedly saying is true – GOATA IS THE BIGGEST KILLER (MASS MURDERER/CONTRACT KILLER) in Sri Lanka next to Prabha. Gota is the living biggest killer of the whole world since Hitler, Pol Pot, Prabhakaran and a few others are no more. This is yet another achievement of a Sri Lankan! Lucky to be away from these murderers but sympathize with our brothers and sisters living in Sri Lanka.

It is because they pray to a “God” that the truth is seeping out, as
if Gods hands are at play.Divine action can never be overturned.

The reason why MR won via the hidden support of VP. GR writing his
“War” book only to disclose his ties with being in Matale at the given
time along with S.Silva, Kamal etc. are all disclosed in mysterious
      order to suit Justice ultimately.

Patiently we may await the final truth sooner.

    Those were dangerous times
    To be a mother
    Ravenous wolves and lions
    Prowling in the night
    Devouring sons and daughters
    Kamalawathi, you cried alone
    In Matale – when everyone
    pretended not to know
    Even though the names
    had been crossed out
    by the red pen
And kept telling you to look

    How many sleepless nights
    Since the nightmare
    How many times a day
    Sitting by the window
You hear the voice of boys
as they walk by your gate
    You arise and peer through
    the rusted iron bars
    Your tea
    in Rohana’s favourite cup
    growing cold

    Many an afternoon
    You hear dry leaves
    rustle in your yard
    You rush to the door
    holding Susantha’s favourite book
    against your chest
    But there is no one

    Then one evening
    when the rain stops
    and the sun
    peeks through the clouds
    There they are
    in the soft cool air
    of Matale
    Two little birds
    by the jasmine shrub
    Two dainty Neela Sitibichchas
    chirping and hopping in unison
“Oh you must be two brothers,”
    You say
    Startled they fly away
    And you go back
    to your old arm chair
    in the verandah
    and whisper
    “I won’t stop your mother,
    when she comes
    to see me.”

This narrative gives credence to the fact that torture and extra judicial killings have been perpetrated by the armed forces even against the sinhalese people during the 1980’s. This malaise seems to be caused by the mindset of impunity that pervades the govt and military even to this day. All those in power irrespective of the political parties have been guilty of such inhuman practices right along whether it be against the tamils or sinhalese.

GR who sits smugly on his pedestal of defence secretary now has to contend with real evidence of crimes against humanity perpetrated on his own sinhala people even as he denies any such crimes against the tamils. The credibility of the govt is at a new low due to these findings. Only hope justice will prevail in this land of injustice and coverups.

How can these damned politicians sleep at night . Their hands are full of blood . I am sure they are on drugs and Jane horrible night mares . Being Buddhists when they die their souls will sail thru SANSARA to again take BIRTH as beggars and snakes . This is the fate for all nasty Political Leaders of the world . The wheels of fate grind slowly but surely . Most of us will live to see GR AND MR BROUGHT BEFORE THE COURT IN HAGUE . NOT ONLY TAMILS , Singhalese and Muslims also disappeared , The International Community and the Diaspora are gradually tightening the screws on the GSL . TAMIL NADU with a population of approximately 72 million and also Kerala with another 70 million is a big threat to GR AND MR . Karunanithi , leaving the Congress with 5 Central Govt Ministers should be an EYE OPENER TO GR AND MR . Overall the future is bleak and troublesome for GSL . The Muslim issue has alerted all the surrounding Muslim Nations . Unfortunately most Sri Lanka politicians are LOOTERS . Sir John Kotelawala took all his wealth and landed in UK . Chandrika took her wealth and landed in UK . Many others have large foreign bank accounts and ready for the bolt . SL will be a poor nation in debt ; revenue goes to debt service and no money for Sociology- Economic development . The MR AIRPORT AND THE MR HARBOUR ARE ALL WHITE ELEPHANTS . God bless mother Lanka .

      Roger Kumar,
Do you seriously think Tamil Nadu and Kerala are friends. You may not know that there have been protests and demonstrations in both states against each other for more than five years. Both the dam and the river are in and belongs to Kerala. Kerala wants to repair the old dam with its own money. Tamil Nadu, which has chronic water problems, has refused to agree to construct a new dam. So much so, if Kerala and Tamil Nadu were independent countries with their own armies, they might have been at war by now. And you think they’ll join together to be a threat to GR and MR. What a ballony.

I believe the GOSL has been accused of genocide by the HRW. The accusation has been rejected. What is the term you use for govts which kill their own, not in the hundreds but thousands. How can a staunchly Buddhist population of over 80% condone this?

A sad story of a mother. A mother who transcends communal identities. Her tragedy is the tragedy of thousands of mothers in this island. What befalls even one mother, befalls us all. Let us set ourselves on a course that prevent a repeat of such tragedies. The tears of such mothers, curse us all. To this add the tears of the fathers, mothers, siblings and relatives of those assumed missing, murdered and killed in battle. There are also the tears of the those who have to live with the tragedy their own day to day life has become, because of the mindless violence that gripped this country for long. It is a flood of tears that we are increasingly becoming oblivious to. Violence is now pulling at its leashes to make a come back. In Tamil there is saying , ” Erlai Alutha Kanneer Kooriya Vaalai Okkum”, meaning that the tears of the poor are akin to sharp sword. The poor here refers to not only the materially poor, but those who have been deprived / denied someone they loved and something they valued.

Instruments of such violence were and are many and with diverse goals. It was violence against violence. Violence is blind and is a bad habit. This is the only lesson we have to learn.

Let us help assuage the pains of such mothers and others. This should be our national mission for decades to come.

How many of the similar stories did not come to surface since then ?

There were only sons but just had been uni students went missing in that era. Not only Unp govt but also JVPers with the mind sets similar to today BBS led all these atrocities there.

One of my good friends, only son for their parents, had been the batch rep for their group went missing. I really dont think he was engaged with JVP politics. For my eyes, as I got to know some personally , many of the JVPers were ones from rural areas with a grude against urban dwellers. Clashes of all forms – sometimes for pitty reasons were seen at universities. Nawakawadaya was brutal at Pera than anywhere else. No such forms of retaliations are practised any where but may be only at the Uni of Adisabeba, as got to know from one of my ethiopian mates in the Europe. I think the latter is common where the gap between rural and urben dwellers are significantly high. Today, on my visits back to the home country, I get to see no remarkable differences between rural and urban youth. Informaton technology has contributed a lot to keep both connected. But the distinctive change seen there is that youth seem to have no respect to their elders. I personally believe sociologists and psychologists should work hard to improve the mindsets of our youth. That can be the great investment for the future of the nation. Rulers should invest more in education than has been sofar – is imperative.

Couldn’t agree more. May I add a story of a young engineering student who hid under the bed during the 1983 riots. Unfortunately one hooligan looked under the bed and caught him. He was dragged to the front road, beaten up and set on fire. He pleaded prayed begged and even kissed one of their legs. Hundreds stood around and watched this drama. Believe me there was not a single drop of tear on any of the onlookers which included ladies mothers grand mothers and even kids. Not one protested. Not one wrote about this. Not one apologized not one condemned it, not one even said even the Sri Lankan “Sorry”. But there was and will be so many denials, so many excuses and citation of other countries and other thugs other crimes committed etc. Ironically this Tamil boy had a Sinhalese girl friend. Who do we blame. Leaders political social and religious are supposed to shape the country. They wont even condemn this horror. Now they are coming for who….. everybody.

I believe from what I saw this is their behaviour regardless of being tamil sinhala or any other races.

Very recently, I happened to see this on the screen while a civilian was beated just before the high courts – by organised group of thugs. Paticular innocient man had gone to make a complaint and was on his way back home – today the brutal acts are being sponsord by thugs in power.

I think there is no options than go against in a form of arab spring to topple the brutal rulers for a better change.

As added earler, what we need is to more investment in society building rather than road or any other sector developments. So long average mind sets are not shaped up – nothing can be seen good in the future.

May be the brutalities described you in the 83 riots were like a wave – there were many that abused the occasion – latter is common to entire developing countries be them predominantly buddhist or other regligion adherents. My question is such a philosophy that promote the non violence way of life seem to have not improved the folks mentalities to the positive though it has been established in the country for centuries.

If anybody remember Tilly’s Beach Hotel In Mt.Lavinia. It was one of our favourite gathering places for weekends.

Many Russian, Austrian and German Tourists patronaged it and it had a home away from home atmosphere.

it’s head chef…..a handsome Tamil guy was the most favourite among all the Tourists, specially among young girls.

The European Girls loved him and hugged him so much while he stayed so cool that made us Jealours of him. Russian Girls did not Know English, but talking in Russian as if the Chef understand all. Many gifts were exchanged in the dining hall.

The reason was his Sunday Lunch Buffet Table and the evening Dinner menu was something to talk and admire about the whole evening. Also welcome and warm atmosphere.it’s unique wedding menue…a very simple but with a unique and signature touch.

After 83 Riots the whole hotel was burnet down. Whenever I pass it my memories go back to the happy times we spent there.

That pleasure, laugh, humor and love is not there anymore…..along with it’s cheff and the staff.

Thank you Tillys….We still love you and miss you.

Oh you are beginning to worry about other mothers too. A very good sign. Somebody committed all these crimes. But have no guts to blame the culprits. If it was LTTE would have written 200 pages cooking up 180 and serving the master. One single comment where LTTE is not mentioned. Hope you will not be punished for that.

Would you now support me in my one man campaign to appoint a commission of inquiry modeled on South Africal Truth and Reconciliation Commission to inquire into all war crimes and crime against humanity from 5th April 1971 perpetrated by all parties to the conflict?

Once a credible investigation concludes the country can bring humane closure to all these sufferings.

In fact I was in the course of commenting on David Blackers deafening silence on these matters.

He buried cops in his earlier embodiment as a young immature Sri Lankan soldier and now as a born again human right champion/activists he is perhaps digging the graves and looking for bodies while searching for his own lost soul.

Please leave him alone as he needs lots of time to find his lost soul.

        Native Veddah,

I have no objections to a T & R commission here, provided we have leaders like Nelson Mandela , De Clerk and BishopTutu to guide it and provide inspiration. Who will judge what is the truth and who will promote reconciliation , even if the truth is found. Any such exercise here will only lead to more rancour, more bitterness and deeper wounds.

You are getting old! Your forgetting the wisest words uttered by any commentator ( You)- ” the Tamils and Sinhalese are a stupid people”. Of course, by inference your adopted tribe or the Tribe that has adopted you are the wise ones!

We should install a real Veddah as our President for five years. Can you suggest a suitable candidate ? He can stay on in Binthena and enjoy the five years sipping the honey and eating the wild boar and venison he will be provided in plenty. Papers will be sent regularly for his thumb print. It may be also a good idea confine our parliamentarians in a reservation in Bintene. They can take turns to visit the Veddah president to massage his body, help him prepare the various oils and Veddah medications , and of course sharpen his arrows. They can also provide him some drugs on a regular basis.

Sri Lanka will recover in the five years and be ready to elect a working president, who would have learned the lesson by then that the country could do better without him!

        I was just day dreaming.

Wonder whether these boys were haded over to the ltte at the behest of Erik Solheim??
At the time ltte were committing ethnic cleansing and Erik Solheims “Red Barna” was overlooking the welfare of the displaced.

It is said that the genius of Einstein is his ability to perform thought experiments. In other words to imagine himself in situations that he physically cannot be in; i.e. riding a light beam.

Some among us are also intelligent enough, that they can put themselves in the shoes of a grieving mother and feel her pain of loosing her child. It is those who demand justice and ‘change’ in the hopes that another mother will not have to go through such pain.

The rest, who are not so gifted, just look for excuses for their “leader” so that they can feel good about supporting a lying, cheating, murdering, thief.

This article took me back to one of the most cruel episodes in the country – Beeschanaya (insurgency) period in 87-89. Almost every corner of the country, we then youth had fears of being beheaded, tortured or go missing for unknown reasons. I did not involve myself in any of the activities that persuaded by JVPers and any other parties, but we happened to stay hide not knowing what to do next. So were many of our mates then. Universities were closed for without further notice. Our own belongings went missing in our hostels. Parents wanted to protect their sons from being abducted or go missing by unknown barbarians. Only the ones that could manage to send their children abroad did so while others remained in the ocuntry. This made a big gap in lanken Universities becasue the scheduled courses took longer than needed to be completed. Universities reopened and closed again for no further notice not once several times. Batch mates went missing for unknown reasons. Fortunatley for me, I left the country for my edu. But on my return on almost every year since then, I am becoming knowing who had then been missing in that era. No matter whether you involved in JVP or any other movements guided by university action commities, uni students and same age youth of the country went missing, some were burnt down on tyre pires, some were hanged on road corners, some parents of the youth were sent the packeted body parts of their lovely sons. This I heard from the the articles but my friends themselves shared what they got to see. People in the country accused the regime and JVPers of the brutal incidents. I left the country for continuation of my degree course. AI had numbered the student and youth went missing that era as over 50 000.

The LTTE whiners have found a new punch line to bash Rajapakses. Gotabhaya was just one officer out of many in the army. In Sri Lanka there will be many like the Matale grave all over as over sixty thousand were killed. Some were given lists of names of SLFP Party members for elimination and some officers refused. But what one must not forget is that they put their life on the line so that we had peace to live without chit curfews. Many are suffering from amnesia it seems.

The interesting thing about this story is that Mahinda was going to the UNHRC complaining about the murders and disappearances of the Sinhala youth at the hands of the Sri Lankan military and its associated death squads while his very own brother Gota, as a senior military officer, was torturing, murdering and making many disappear. It is clear that Mahinda’s main intention was to gain political advantage rather than genuinely trying to save the poor Sinhala youth.

The upshot of this story is that all those politcial and military villains at the time are now having a ball together, eating the wealth of the country privately and pulling wool over the glib public’s eyes. It is not even worth commenting on this; just a waste of time. Sri Lanka is a cursed island, and it is run by the demons who returned from uthuru kuru divayina. Even Lord Buddha could not contain and discipline these demons; he came three times and then given up; so who else has the capability. It’s a goner really. Leela, you should know that over one million students protested in India for the Tamil Cause . The students were mostly from all Southern States. Kerala and TAMIL NADU have water issues BUT WHEN IT COMES TO SUPPORTING THE CAUSE FOR TAMIL ELAM THEY WILL UNITE . BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER . Both Kerala and Tamil Nadu will support the establishment of Tamil Elam . South India knows the history of the Cheras, CHOLAS AND PANDYAS WHO IN ANCIENT TIMES RULED OVER NORTHERN KUMARIKANDAM. ( present areas demanded for Tamil Elam ) . A few years ago who would have foreseen a million student strike in India and the resignation of 5 Central Govt; Ministers from the Indian Cabinet all in support of the Tamils in SL. Also do not forget the large Muslim population of India . India has more Muslims than PAKISTAN!! The distance between TAMIL Nadu and Kerala is only 27 miles !! I hope the GSL AND MR AND GR AND THE BBS ARE AWARE OF THESE DANGERS . I pray saner counsel will prevail and the religious and ethnic minorities are governed with respect, and LOVE AND COMPASSION AND TOLERANCE AND AVOID ANOTHER CARNAGE . Finally, leela, look at WORLD HISTORY AND THE CREATION OF NEW NATIONS . Africa was a colony owned by Gt . Britain but today Africa has over 75 Nations ; Timor was divided into EAST TOMOR AND WEST TIMOR; Dominicana was divided into the Dominican Republic and Haiti; when India got its independence in 1948 it had only 9 States , today India has 22 states ; there is no USSR ANY MORE ALL COUNTRIES THAT FORMED THE USSR BROKE AWAY TO CREATE THEIR OWN NATIONS ; Palestine is on its way to Nationhood ; ISRAEL WAS BORN OUT OF TERRORISM!!! Moshe Dayan and other early Israeli leaders were terrorists; the USA revolted and waged war with Gt. Britain to form UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ; Look at Eastern Europe , many new nations have been created- Sudan was divided into two East SUDAN AND SUDAN ; Look at the WORLD MAP OF TODAY AND COMPARE IT TO THE WORLD MAP OF 1950 and you will see all the new Nations . Humans have their different Customs and Conventions and Traditions and their Language and Religious rights as a result they have their ASPIRATIONS AND IF WE ARE TO LIVE WITH LOVE AND COMPASSION AND TOLERANCE THEN GOOD POLITICS DEMANDS TO ” LOVE EVER ; HURT NEVER ” . As things are now in GSL , the future is bleak and there may be an uprising of the masses or who knows there may emerge another UDDHA RAKITHA THERO!’ I pray for MOTHER LANKA .

The Rajarata Rifle Force had a hand in killings as this piece tells:-

Gotabhaya created and sustains the Tamil Diaspora!
    – Military officers: Friday, 29 March 2013 – Lanka News Web

“The shooting and killing of innocent civilians in the Jaffna peninsula about 30 years in a disgraceful act of the Sri Lanka Army was carried out by the Rajarata Rifle Force and current Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Nandasena Rajapaksa was also involved in the incident since he was a Captain of the said Force, a military officer told us. It is this incident that created a Tamil Diaspora.
He made this statement in response to a comment by Minister Dullas Alahapperuma at a press conference at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute following adoption of the resolution on Sri Lanka at the UNHRC that the UNP had to also take the blame for the formation of the Tamil Diaspora after the killing of innocent Tamil civilians in July 1983.
“It is the Rajarata Rifle Force that first shot and killed Tamil civilians in 1983. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who was a Captain at the time allowed those deployed under him to kill the civilians. After the then UNP government came to an end, the Rajarata Rifle Force was disbanded by sending off military personnel attached to it. However, Captain Gotabhaya Rajapaksa managed to escape any punishment due to his political connections. Dullas Alahpperuma is speaking without knowing this past,” the officer said.
The officer explained that it was the pressure from Tamil Nadu that pushed the Indian government to vote in favour of the resolution and that the growing dissention in Tamil Nadu against Sri Lanka is the killing of Prabhakaran’s youngest son.

“Captain Rajapaksa who allowed the killing of innocent Tamil civilians in 1983, in 2009 ordered Brigadier Kamal Gunaratne to kill Prabhakaran’s 12 year old son when he surrendered to the army. Brigadier Kamal Gunaratne served as a second lieutenant under Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in the Rajarata Rifle Force in 1983. It is the past experiences that made Gotabhaya Rajapaksa order Brigadier Kamal Gunaratne to kill the Tigers who surrendered to the army in 2009,” the military officer said.
Therefore, the officer said that it is Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who should take the responsibility for creating a Tamil Diaspora and feeding them with slogans and not any other political party”

    MAHELA,

THE REMAINS OF THE THOUSANDS OF TAMIL TIGERS AND TAMIL CIVILIANS ARE BURIED UNDER THE HOTEL BUILT IN NANTHIKADAL BY THE SO CALLED FORCES.

THE HOTEL IS A COVER UP TO HIDE THE BODIES FROM BEING UNEARTHED.

THIS WILL BE EXPOSED BY “GOTHA BAYA GULLA” AND SHAVINDRA SILVA IN HAGUE, WHEN THEY GO UP FOR WAR CRIMES TRIALS.

THE BODIES WERE BULLDOZED INTO BURIAL PITS LIKE THE JEWS IN NAZI GERMANY.

NANTHIKADAL BURIAL GROUNDS IS THE REPEAT OF MATALE BURIAL GROUNDS.

MATALE IS NOW BEING DUG OUT FOR THE RELATIVES TO MOAN THEIR DEAD.

      Danny Boy,

Yes I herd your story as some of the LTTE and civilian dead were burried in mass graves.

Also Gamini say some were dumped in the sea.

I also saw through Google earth satellite images that showed some digging been done near Nanthikandal which showed some signs of burial sites. Also this place was off bound for everybody for some time soon after end of the war.

Also I herd that GOSL installed a second Kiln (crematorium) at Anuradhapura during the hight of the war.

Surely in order to dispose over 100,000 dead bodies, they should have used more than one method.

Sri Lanka Army should have some info. on what happened to the remains of all these dead Tamils.

At least now they should conduct a proper burial service involving the relatives of the dead who are mostly Christian and Hindu and conduct a service to bring peace upon the dead souls and healing upon the living.

I herd even King Dutugemunu after killing Elara during the battle had a Hindu Burial rites conducted upon him and gave a dana on behalf of him and also built a Monument for him. You still could see this monument and it is written in our history books.

Same with Osama Bin Laden that USA brought his body onto the deck of the US carrier fleet and conducted Muslim Burial rites with the help of an Imam on board and then sent it to deep Ocean.

These are true Sinhala Kings and true gentlemen who follow UN war charter. Not the fake and coward weerayas.

It is my firm opinion that we should not have double standards in this matter. Matale graves has become the talk of some people because the coordinating officer at that time is some one that some parties wish to pick and choose for vilification. What about others?

During the riots of 1915 or 1918, which ever, the estate superintendents vested with powers of execution did so after holding a summary inquiry and it was recorded. Not that I approve an execution after a summary trial but the action was on record. Because of the lack of record in the executions of 1988 uprisings room was left open for private vendetta as revealed in the murders of the Embilipitiya school children for which there was subsequent legal action. That was one incident which came to light. A lot others were swept under the carpet.

In order to curb the 1988 JVP menace it was thought fit by the then authorities to use extra-judicial methods and was supported by the gentry by and large as an instance where lawlessness had to be met with lawlessness. No US interventions, No Ban-ki Moons and No Navi Pillais.

It is a well known fact that there in every unit of armed forces stationed right round the country in 1988 there was a special unit called the I section where the suspects were tortured to extract information. In fact most of them died not due to gunshot or any other method of death, it was death by starvation.

The Government politicians at that time had a lot of say on the fate of individuals particularly of rural areas.

In any process of finding fault, it is ultimately the public officer who had the slightest association with any program, who has to pay the price and not the politician.

Sri Lanka must evolve a system whereby in the event of say an uprising like 1971 or 1988 takes place what laws should be in place to deal with such situations. We have a thing called the Emergency Rule or the Public Security Ordinance where if so proclaimed a dead body can be disposed without an inquiry, a methodology availed even in good old “Ceylon”. So in fact we permitted this double standard.

I know a President of the yesteryear who had to face the brunt of the 1988-1989 uprisings said “Munta mona Manushika Aithivasikamda?” meaning what human rights for them? The strange fact is that it was alright for the gentry for that President to make that comment.

When Colonels of the yesteryear (I am referring to 1950’s) shot two men in mount-lavinia in order bring order was there a judicial inquiry into the deaths of the two people? Oh! No! it received the approval of the gentry with a nod.

Life of a person is of utmost importance irrespective of his standing in society. Let not there be double standards in taking away the life of a man. Still better be without taking the life of a man.

      Jayagath Perera,

What I herd was when President Mahinda Rajapakse was travelling to Geneva in 1990 for UNHRC session to prosecute then UNP Government on human rights violation, he tried to smuggle with him over 600 Photographs of dead JVP and other innocent youth to claim that they were murdered by UNP.

Also MARA wanted to show the world that UNP carried out this Genoside and through this would have had a plan to toppling the UNP Government.

Subsequently at SL airport, the authorities confiscated those 600 photos and let him go without them to Geneva, but MR insisted on a written document to be given to him show that those photos were held by the Airport authority.

President Rajapakse brought this written paper to UNHRC to show them that GOSL murdered those over 600 dead JVP members produced the paper to prove that he was telling the truth, and they believed his talk and the paper which showed UNP atrocities and Genocide carried out against JVP youth.

      Please read the following webs.

      My question is…….

1`)WHO GAVE PRESIDENT RAJAPAKSE OVER 600 DEAD JVP ers, PHOTOS TO BE TAKEN TO GENEVA OTHER THAN HIS BROTHER GOTABAYA.

2)WHERE ELSE MR COULD HAVE ACCESS TO GET THESE SO MANY NUMBER OF (over 600) DOCUMENTS AND PHOTOS OTHER THAN FROM HIS OWN BROTHER GOTABAYA RAJAPAKSE.

3)WAS THIS A MARA/ GOTA CONSPIRACY TO PROSECUTE THEN UNP GOVERNMENT AT UNHRC AND TO USE IT TO TOPPLE THE UNP GOVERNMENT.

      4) DID GOTA TOOK THESE PHOTOS AFTER KILLING THESE CHILDREN, AND THEN GAVE TO HIS BROTHER TO TAKE THEM TO UNHRC TO PROSECUTE UNP AND THEN USE UNHRC TO TOPPLE THEN UNP GOVERNMENT ON HUMAN GENOSIDE LAWS.

      5) DID MARA/ GOTA HAD A PLAN TO TOPPLE UNP GOVT BY USING JVP UPRISING AND BY MURDERING BOTH JVP AND INNOCENT CHIULDREN TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND GAVE THEM TO MARA TO TAKE THEM TO UNHRC.

6)WHERE ARE THOSE OVER 600 MURDERED JVP AND INNOCENT CHILDRENS PHOTOGRAPHS THAT MARA TRIED TO SMUGGLE TO UNHRC IN 1990 AND WHO HAS THEM NOW.

      5) IT’S TIME TO FIND THE ANSWERS TOTHE ABOVE QUESTIONS, AND THESE PHOTOGRAPHS COULD BE USED AS WITNESS AND EVIDENCE OF GENOSIDE AND MASS MURDER CARRIED OUT AGAINST INNOCENT CHILDREN.

      6) THERE ARE MANY WHO ARE LOOKING FOR JUSTICE AND ALL THE OPPOSITION PARTIES SHOULD HELP THE VICTIM FAMILIES TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR LOVED ONES.

HOPE CAT WILL COME OUT FROM THE BOX NOW.

It is the order of the day that politicians play double games for their advantage. The point that I wish to make is that we must have a frame work in which we can preserve our life. If we do not address the basic problem as to what a government of the day must do in the event of a disturbance of the type that took place parrticulaly in 1988, then if and whenever such a thing takes place the Governments would resort to the same solution. Those who bear arms would take their revenge for private grudges. The Gentry wil either defend or criticize the government depending on the political party in power. The US Government, United Nations and the UNHCR would also react to various degress depending on the political party in power in Sri Lanka.

It is the ordinary citizen whose life is at jeopardy in the event of such disturbances.
