“I Will Use The Sword As And When Necessary” – Sirisena

President Maithripala Sirisena said that he would not hesitate to use the sword on friend or relations, regardless of distinctions such as political loyalty or color.

Maithripala Sirisena

He added that he would use his sword on anyone ‘for a clean and pure political movement,’ and for the betterment of the nation and the ‘jathiya’.

He made this assertion at the launch of ‘Nidahase Sammuthiya (Covenant on Freedom),’ the policy statement of a coalition of 31 unnamed political parties contesting under the ‘United People’s Freedom Alliance,’ at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall today (December 28).

President Sirisena did not mention any names following this bold pledge to slay those who are opposed to his notions of what is good and wholesome. As Colombo Telegraph has reported, the President has been accused on numerous occasions of feeding nepotism and corruption instead of eliminating these as promised in his presidential election campaign. He took his son Daham to the United Nations as part of the Sri Lankan delegation, for example, while Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe has questioned why the President has not appointed a commission regarding his daugher’s PR agency being given contracts to handle the governments PR work.

According to a statement released by the Presidential Media Unit, the President had expressed the need to groom a new set of honest and straight politicians through the forthcoming local government elections who love the country and would not bow down to bribery, corruption and wastage.

The President also said that it is hard to create a new political culture ‘at the top’ and therefore it has to be done ‘at the bottom’

The promises being made are election promises. Once elections are over all promises will be handed over to commissions and that will bethe end of the promises made.
We have heard enough of this BS.
When will our people realise this. 99% of our Politicians are corrupt.

CT. Why the article by Mr NK on Non Interference of Judiciary with pictures of red coated and silli hatted men n women have disappeared from the screen??

Has it become too intense with questions regarding their (mal) practices or need to cover up the Question on giving orders by the Judge to ” Burn the dead carcass in public by using a public Esplanade as a Cemetry in the heart of Jaffna against the religious beliefs of Hindus “
Are they the champions of the Judiciary?? Champions of the Racists elements including the GOSL??
This is the problem with the media.
Even the Stupid woman wife of a Silli Governor in the Eastern province tried to march inside a Hindu temple with her Baaaaata shoes and seen abusing the indigenous Hindu women and children.
Why a blackout on this story??
Was CT too threatened by the monstrous wife of the governor ??
These are the problems of the root cause of this country.
By hide or brush under the carpets the sensitive issues hoping will go away.
Every 2 sessions a year at the UNHRC SL runs with bogus papers to beg and scream for Mercy .
No need for that ! Instead do the right thing at HOME first for all to live peacefully.
Cut out and catch the state thieves , criminals ,and the war criminals before going round with SWORD PRESIDENT!!!!
You had 3 Years to do all these and FAILED MISERABLY.
Using the left over money received from leasehold ect had been used to BUY CROOKS MPs and made Ministers in a hurry.
The security forces need payment for leaving the encroached Tamil lands from Mullativu.
Why ?? That money should have been used to rehabilitate the poor people.

What Greed is this?? So that the armed forces can have a merry Xmas ?? In Buddha Land??
Oh Come On !! SICK PEOPLE , GREEDY PEOPLE.

Why the HINDU NINCOMPOOPS OF JAFFNA ON THS GRAVE INJUSTICE meted out to the people and religion of the North are silent on this??
Have they created a new Crematorium for the Hindus in the Esplanade in the fashion of
        Sinhala South??

They are entitled to do what they like to suit their Buddhist religion but this kind of burning in public is not on Hindu religious books.
Never in the history in Jaffna.

      3

.The President should stop using the Jaffna Esplanade as a Crematorium, it’s a total disregard to an ancient religion and the followers of the religion.
There never ever been an esplanade used in the North as for cremation purposes.
Why the permission was granted against this ancient religion??
This is a serious error of judgement.
It never ever should have happened.
Why this injustice had been covered up??
Did the priest requested his carcass to be burnt in front of women and children to be forced against their culture and custom to to be watched??
A blatant injustice to a religion in tit for tat game of vengeance had taken place.
Hope those who took part in this injustice burn in hell in life and in death.

Politicians including the president all top government officials, leading businessmen etc. are true descendants of the naughty prince Vijaya and 700 gangsters, is there a possibility of expelling them to another country and say good riddance of bad rubbish.

Let’s hope that this is the forewarning by Sirisena, before the Western-style oligarchic Lankan crooks who gambol with the wealth of underprivileged Sri Lanka are caught once and for all. Otherwise it is a mere typical Sinhala-boru rhetoric to show honor, where the Word never matches up ever with the reality of the Lankan-flesh.

Hoh hoh ho….. Mr. President, did you really say that it was hard to create a new political culture at the top and therefore it had to be done at the bottom! I had a hearty laugh. So what you are trying to say is that the top most politicians in the government and outside are so corrupt and as there is no way they can be transformed, they should be left alone! This is not what you promised a few weeks ago. Next time, please keep your words soft and tender cos’ then it is easy for you to eat them back.
    .
What happened actually for you to compromise like this? Did you exchange a clemency for top level corrupt politicians in SLFP, UNP and SLPP for an election victory? It is called day time Miguel nighttime Daniel political culture which is super famous in Sri Lanka. Is that why you decided to go down the hill than up? If you have decided to go with the flow, keep going, even a dead fish can do that.
The present corrupt politician lot who are the products of the rotten old political culture should be eliminated first in order make room for a new political culture. They are bad examples for new people. Without rejecting them wholesale, there is no future for the country.
The election result is already set. If it surprises anybody, the background is also setting up to show that rival politicians have suddenly find the President is irresistible and flocking around him as flies attracted to a honey jar. Who these politicians are trying to fool?

Jim, They think that the people are dimwits. What a farce by a man who came on the UNP’s back.

He should be charged for the damage he did to this country via the asbastos problem, the polyethylene problem. The cheaper alternatives should have been developed before this man put his mouth into this.

Glyphosate let him add that to his diet.

What have we got as a leader.

Josie, you are right in being disgusted, but when you use language and imagery that is disgusting it won’t be listened to by those whom it is aimed at.

Sri Lanka is an absolute mess, but our ranting and referring to history which we analyse in various ways, won’t help.

Myself, small guy who can offer no “solution” except that we should seek in whatever little way we can to use our vote to replace these politicians with better ones. I think that there will be preferences for some of the bodies – then our duty is clear, but now easy, since few of us have intimate knowledge of candidates.

For other councils, there’ll be only parties listed. We quite simply do not like any “Party”. Yet every party has its reasonably good members; inquire locally, and if the credit for a Party doing well in a given will bring credit to an honest person, then vote for him/her. so, in Akuressa, where Buddhika Pathirana of the UNP is good, vote for that party. Maithri’s choice there has been exposed as terrible.

Overall, weak Maithri looks the best; but the seemingly reformed JVP also deserves to be considered.

I have little insight in to what goes on in the North. I keep saying things just to affirm that what happens there is also important for our counties future.

The best thing that you as a lankan can do is to not give your vote at any elections in the furure. If you do then the next best thing you can do is to shut your mouth and live with the shit you are responsible for bringing into power.
If all your life you have lived without help or assistance from any politician or political party then glorify your life as humble, clean and honest and you can walk with your head held high.
If you vote then you are guilty, Yes! very guilty of bringing in rogues, cheats, robbers, murderers, highwaymen, homosexuals, rapists, conmen, thugs, gangsters, sexmaniacs, thugs, etc into power and public service.

If you have benefitted in the past and will do so in the future from the above mentioned scumbags then go ahead and live with them.
IT IS YOU AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR COUNTRIES FUTURE AND NOT THE POLITICIANS YOU VOTE INTO POWER.

The good people of all ethnics groups have left your blessed land and are doing well in greener pastures and sadly the shit are left to pollute the land and what is a around.

The future of Sri Lanka is very similar to the African Banana republics already dead or dying a slow and painful death because of the SCUMBAGS in power.

        Dear Not into Politics,

I appreciate your disenchantment, but not with what you see as the solution. You confess, yourself, that you are an economic migrant – “greener pastures”. Do you care nothing for what happens to us here? Why then do you post comments here?

Please note that this is not an attack on you, or even what you represent. I’m trying to highlight the contradictions in your comment.

Yes, on an occasion or two I have regretted voting as I did, but usually I’m proud to proclaim how I voted even after 20 years. I don’t vote for any personal benefits that I expect. I voted for change , for Maithri, on January 08th 2015, and I feel that I did right. In the 2010 Presidential Elections I voted for three candidates who never came anywhere near getting elected.

I’m no Marxist, but what say you regarding the honesty of Vikremabahu Karunaratne or Wije Dias of the social Equality Party? I don’t think that you even know of their existence; you seem obsessed with claiming that I’m responsible for bringing crooks to power.

Please re-read what you have written. Haven’t you referred even to me as shit? I’m sure that you don’t really want to call me that. Yes, going on your definition I can claim to be humble, clean and honest – although I know that I’m not perfect.

Please have the decency to respond to what I have said, because I feel that you are basically a good man.

          To : Sinhala Man.

With reference to your response to “Not into Politics” comments, who ever he may be he is justified in what he says. Unlike you he does not call himself Sinhala Man and unlike you he does not show any racist outlook no matter what his ethnic background may be.
I doubt if he is a economic migrant but may have migrated in accordance with his educational and career background. Economic migrants are your Sinhala people who will take to any leaky fishing boat to seek solace somewhere else.
I to am a migrant and we migrated in the good days when Australia opened its doors to us because your Sinhala leaders did not like us for what we are. We were educated, honest, hardworking, we got on well with all communities and we had good jobs.
There was nothing economic about us. We were burghers by descent and that was a poison to your Sinhala leaders.
Lets end this in simple tones.
If you give your vote to the Scum then you are responsible and guilty and if you refrain then you can call yourself a honest man no matter if you have to rice and pol sambol all your life.
Keep your dignity no matter what comes and when you have to go you can go with your head held high. Also refrain from calling yourself Sinhala Man for it does not look nice.
As for me & my family your Sinhala leaders did us a great favor by kicking us out at the correct time. We are at peace, happy and relaxed thanks to the idiots.
Wish you a very happy & peaceful 2018.

            Dear Bertram,

I can’t say that I was happy reading your response, but I was partly amused, and now that it has sunk in, I’m glad that you have responded as spontaneously and honestly as you have.

I first read what you had said while on a 6 hour bus journey. Now, I’ve got to sort things out at home – many things – and the bit of rain that’s begun to fall after I began typing won’t help.

Please give me until tomorrow; I will respond at the very bottom of the comments, since I feel that this exchange between us could become one that sheds a good deal of light, and not generate too much heat.

I’m sure that you’re a good man, and I, too, wish you a very Happy Year Ahead!

              To: Sinhala Man.

Thank you for the response. There is no necessity for a further response but all that can be said is please do not use your vote as mentioned previously.
Your land is dying a slow death and only sane minded persons like you can bring it back to good health by not using your vote.
Your vote is toxic to your future and bait to the Yakko politicians of the country who can only survive like bacteria in unclean , unhealthy surroundings.
The bloody shit rogues will put their bare hands into any bucket of excreta no matter how nauseating it may be as long as they can collect as many votes as possible and when finished the unclean swine will lick their shitty unclean hands as a act of victory on their part. That crude act will also show their unrefined jungle behavior.
Just refrain from voting that’s all as long as you do not contribute to that bucket of damn shit.
As mentioned earlier we are at peace, relaxed and very happy where we are thanks to the unclean swine but in reality we would have loved to have stayed back in the land of our birth and contributed to its development and prosperity together with all communities and if it did happen then you as my neighbor would have been a classic melting pot of ethnic harmony.
Anyway it’s just good fortunate circumstances that i am a burgher of dutch descent and unfortunately for you being a Sinhalese.
I have good very good educated Sinhalese as friends here we are all one family in existence. They are not rogues, cheats, swindlers, thugs neither swine but who also realized that they and their families could not exist amongst the filthy swine of the land.
Anyway good luck and every good blessing to you in 2018

Yes, I’m a Sinhalese, and a Man. The use of that handle, coupled with writing with sympathy towards minority group was my stratagem for getting both the Sinhalese and the Minorities to realise that there is no need to get confrontational.

You may have begun to realise that yourself, but I find your use of imagery nauseating.

I may be writing too much- and that is something difficult to do coherently – but it can’t be difficult for you to read. If your response are few, and brief, that will be all right. If you are happy where you are, why bother with us?

I’m probably a bit different from what you first took me for. Two of my sisters are Australians and I met them both at a niece’s wedding on the 16th of December. The one in Sydney has a son and a daughter. The son was in King’s School, Parramatta, and was the Head Prefect before proceding to Oxford Uni, England, where he got a Ist Class in English and Law. -funny combination that sounds to me. The girl was Head Prefect in the corresponding Anglican Girl’s School. She’s now married to a white man and by April 2018 will have three kids.

The sister in Brisbane is married to a man of Irish descent. Before they got married they said that they were not going to have kids.

I remain a Sinhalese villager; it’s up to you to decide how educated. Perhaps my writing is substandard. But my discussion may bring up serious issues. AlthoughI’ve never been out of Asia, I’ve read things like Tom Keneally’s “The Chant of Billy Blacksmith”.

The Internet allows me to do many things I couldn’t dream of before. Beethoven has been a passion from childhood. In December I downloaded a Youtube performance of Fidelio, wanting to show it to my grandchildren. Won’t do! I liked it well enough. Too gloomy for kids – set in a prison – despite the happy ending.

                  Many thanks for your response.
The subject of this article is about giving or not giving your vote.
I am not interested in your education, family background or personal life, that is not my concern. What you read is not my concern, neither is your passion.
If you are trying to show me and the readers that you are cultured, good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then use your culture to keep bloody morons, shit bucket stirrers, sex maniacs, arseholes, thugs, rogues , cheats, rapists, amudey wearers, satan worshippers, and the other nauseating scum out of good sri lankan society.
Finally when you have time get yourself a copy of ” The Rise & Fall of the Third Reich ” and read it carefully for it portrays the same arseholes of the past whom you are voting for in your land for the future.
The only difference between them and your buggers was that they were cultured but ultimately brought God’s Vengeance and Justice upon their own people from which they are still reeling.
No more responses mate for this discussion is over.

” A very happy, blessed and prosperous 2018 to Colombo Telegraph. ”

I read Shirer’s tome – cover to cover – around 1965. My father having passed away in 1963, I delighted in doing the things that would not be expected of me. Constance Garnet’s translation of War and Peace was another, but when I borrowed Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”, my English teacher cum librarian told me that at sixteen I was too young to be reading such things. I think he knew that I wouldn’t listen.

I’m not checking these things for accuracy, but I think Hitler was initially ELECTED about 1929 because many didn’t know whom to vote for, and abstained. I don’t know what your definition of culture is, but all humans have culture of some sort. And Germany has not been “reeling’ since the Second World War because of things like the Marshall Plan which was in sharp contrast to the terrible terms imposed upon Germany by the French in 1918.

Now THAT is something that the Sinhalese can learn from. I’m not surprised that the discussion is over from your side. Many get fed up when they find me pontificating in ways they didn’t initially expect. when they told me something. I am indeed an odd guy!

There still are some things that I may still say about the Dutch in Ceylon, but that needn’t concern you personally. I wish you didn’t descend to scatology quite so often – and don’t generalise too much. Vote, I will; isn’t it compulsory for you?

It may be that we never hear of each other again. That’s what life is becoming with MEANS of communication becoming so easy.

With a first class in law/english(I didnt know that the combination was possible as 2 diff faculties) he will be at the top of whatever he does. One thing you have to be careful with marrying Aussies is that to the average AUSSIE marriage is not so sacrosanct. Best wishes to your family,a great unit.

                    Thanks, Percy.

The fact is that I haven’t met him for ten years. Nice guy; I was able to understand him. Pure Sinhalese, but he’s lost to Sri Lanka.

The parents attended the wedding. Good religious persons. Accountants by profession; been very successful, but as you know that is not a profession in which one has to grapple with the real issues in life.

The daughter I met when the white man and she had a sort of second wedding in Colombo. I have great difficulty coping with her accent. It’s twins that she’s expecting in April.

Her marriage will be safe. These are all religious people, like my mother. She baby-sat for ten years in Sydney, then lived ALONE for ten years in this house where I am currently typing this. She died ten years and a three weeks ago.

I’m still sorting out matters pertinent to this house. This was an extra one that my father built. The tenants included then Lt Col Tissa Indika Weeratunga, because of the school close by. He was wonderful company. The people of Jaffna remember him as a ruthless racist. He was later Army Commander.

My spinster sister lives in regal splendour in the much larger house next door. The legalities relating to this property she’s messed up in style. Nobody speaks out. I have a very rich and famous sister in Colombo (no kids), the youngest is also very rich with an American kid and a husband who hasn’t bothered to visit Bandarawela in the thirty years he’s been my b-i-l. They’ve never visited my home in Maharagama; SENT us a few gifts last week.

Yes, Percy. Many insights encapsulated in that. As for me: Google “Thomian Pharisees” to see my real name and photograph. Then make pronouncements.

              Dear Bertram,

This is the second page of comments on this article. Please hold on until tomorrow for me to write constructively on this subject. I’m tired. However, could you please look at the first page of comments; and to ascertain my identity please Google these two words: Thomian Pharisees.

Owing to some technical problem it is not possible for most of us to paste links on to our comments. We, regulars, have been helping one another; it looks as though some links are getting pasted. I don’t yet know the secret. I hope that you will agree with me that it is good for us to co-operate on such matters – even if we disagree in what we write.

That is an unusual collocation of words. They will lead you to at least two of the three articles written by me on Education in Sri Lanka. I’d like to write more, but there are some guys who get mad when I write what I know to be the truth.

There you will see my name and my visage. The discussion that I want to commence tomorrow will be a very serious one, dealing with what I feel are important issues. I would appreciate your views, and also I’d like you to correct me if I’ve got some facts muddled.

      Josie,

There’s a misleading typo in the third paragraph of the comment addressed to you:

I meant to say that where there are preferences, our duty is clear, but NOT easy, since few of us have intimate knowledge of candidates.

I know that I make a good many typos (so do others!), but in most cases the reader is able to make the mental correction, and many fast readers get the meaning while scanning through with the obviously correct word getting in to their heads.

      But I AM sorry.

I don’t think that any Srilankan politicians honestly love the country. They love thyself and their kith and kin.Looking for honest and capable men to rule our country will be like looking for a needle in the Hay Stack. It is not only the rulers but also the ruled who elected the rulers who should be honest. So what do we do?

MY3 has one last chance perhaps to put his money where his mouth is and ‘use the sword’- not literally, unlike his predecessor- or else he will also be written off as a failed leader like the rest. This is when the Bond commission report is published, and how he handles it .

All our eyes are focused on its findings/recommendations/outcome and if MY3 has a backbone this is the time to act. I have a gut feel that he is planning something big to take everyone by surprise.

Sinhala Buddhists are paying for their discriminative politics. I am in no means saying Tamils and Christians are perfect but they have proved to be a better stock than the Sinhala Buddhist, whether in politics or public service.

Sinhala Buddhists with their shortsightedness slowly but surely got rid of them or reduced and planted with unqualified, uncivilized bigots whose only attribute is greed.

So let me with pleasure say:

        Sadu! Sadu! Sadu!

There is no way, ABSOLUTELY NO WAY, you can make Sinhala Buddhists suffer or be glad over their suffering out of their own folly without you facing a ten times stronger reaction. You are saying Sadu, Sadu at the spectacle of a boat sinking with your own children among the group.

In Janaury 2015, when this guy swing his Thirukkai Waal on Old King, instead of Russian Sword, it was really a Russian Roulette.

After the 2015 January election’s unprecedented luck, one may tempted to think if the New King meant really the Russian Roulette, not the Russian sword.

What Solomon West Ridgeway Dias showed to Don Stephen has been done by New King to Old King.

These days New King is swinging the donated Russian sword faster than a swirling Russian Roulette. Now he is targeting one after other. Dilrukshi was the first in Line to his sword. As UNP Ranil and Singapore Mahendran are not the Jathiya, sword may not swing on them.

Burt, Manipulating the system to make undue profits is robbery. There is a major impact on the interest the government has to pay on higher interest rates that were manipulated by the politicians and the Governor. The local interest rate also depend on the rates of Government bills and bonds! I guess you do not seem to understand! Please read some of the articles on CT by the Deputy Governor W A Wijewardana . Appreciate if you refrain from commenting on subjects you do not understand! The Auditor General says that the loss is approximately 1.6 billion but I think there is an indirect loss too as the interest rates of the whole country was pushed up by these transactions.

I don’t think you understand how the bond market works. In this particular case it was a private placement. Buyer can make any offer and the seller (CB) always has the option of walking away. Unless you can prove collusion or insider information there was no crime committed.

Unethical practices cannot be charged in a court of law unless and until it breaks the law. Today the report is supposed to be handed to the President and then to AG. Lets see what they have to say. Even if the AG takes to court due to public pressure I don’t see him winning it unless its a kangaroo court that is appointed like that for Raviraj and the CJ under MR.

President’s new political culture starting at the bottom could find victims in SAITM being decapitated while studying for 9 years for a paid medical degree. They are being abolished without being found fault with in a court of law, in a confused jerk reaction. Dr. Neville was forced to sell SAITM, but the paid students remain to complete course as per judicial verdict, irreversible by SLMC without cooking up ARBITRARY training, unworkable and unrealistically stepping into GMOA territory worse than Nandikadal.
SAITM has Psychiatry training at Avissawella, and Emergency and specialities in paid private hospitals.

Though Ryan shouts lies, his batch had no Psychiatry at MBBS, as Rajarata could not have it and so uni cancelled for all. But as they train for life, they will learn as and when needed. Same for others. SAITM has achieved a high degree of excellence and technology that is envied. No sword please until the current legal batches fade away one by one as they complete. Start afresh in new way.

SAITM already has verdict to be registered by SLMC which is now looking for ARBITRARY illegal reasons to delay their internship. There are no additional set trainings except cooked up dreams.

My3 does have a sword but it is blunt ! Your sword should have rolled
heads soon after your win with the dissolution of parliament . Name
your enemy to the public without beating round the bush My3 ! Your
leadership is rejected by a sizable members of your party headed by
your one time leader , splitting the party into two camps building up
a force to be reckoned ! As part of SLFP and UNP runs the govt in unity
there arises the need of an opposition and the JVP is that opposition
and to stop JVP becoming a force , you lot allowed an alternative under
the defeated Hero . So , your talk of a sword is just another juggling !

    Dear Bertram,

When I first saw all the negative comments that had been made by a few of you who belong to families that had once been here and then left, there were many things that I wanted to say. I know what my attitude to such comments is, and have some notion of what I ought to be saying, but I’m no historian, and I just don’t have the time to marshal all my thoughts and substantiate whatever I wanted to say.

I think that this is the last day to post comments, so you may not have the chance to even respond to what I sway – and I’m not yet sure how much I will say! Nobody may see these last comments, and you yourself may not because you said that you had said whatever you wanted to.

What we now have is a post-colonial situation. Colonialism of sorts has been there ever since humans appeared on this planet. We moved around more than animals, and learnt how to pass lots of things on to future generations, including ideas. However what we call “Colonialism” began in the late 15th Century with advances in science and technology which made it possible for Europeans to spread out throughout the world.

Other ethnic groups have also spread out; I mean the arrival of my own “Sinhalese” ancestors, and our tensions with the “Tamils”, and the Veddahs. The “real” facts we will never know. There was competition, there was subjugation. A lot of cruel things happened. I feel that this was a phase of the “development” or “progress” that was inevitable. Where it will end we don’t know. I’ve put words within parenthesis because, for instance, it may not be “progress” at all; it may be “regress”. We don’t know where we are headed. Stephen Hawkings essentially gloomy view of the future may be justified. We humans may have to leave this planet after totally ruining it.

    Will continue . . .

    Continuing, Bertram:

What I say may be nonsense, may be pretentious, pompous etc. I cannot be the judge. We all claim that we are more than animals, that there is morality in HUMAN activities, and we have organised these in to religions etc. We seek to justify much of what we do in terms of morality. Even you do.

Colonialism was inevitable, and if one group didn’t dominate, it could have been another. Let us accept that, and be as kind as we can to one another. Had certain development not taken place in Europe, then they may have emerged at some point in China, or Japan, or India. Or even the Incas, or whatever African tribe. We will never know, because they were wiped out before they could realise that potential. We are talking within a certain sphere of values and knowledge.

I may be wandering far from the topic that we stared from, as you pointed out, but look over what has been said. We’ve all had to do that! I just can’t vote without being conscious of the larger picture. And we are handicapped somewhat on thisw site by my not being able to now remember what I submitted ten minutes ago. But even given that, how much we have advanced, that I can write this, and hope that somebody far away would find something to ponder on.

We think that racism is bad; my contention would be that while you are probably decent, hardworking and personally a kindly person, how is it that the Dutch Burghers WERE able to migrate to Australia in the 1950s? There was a “White Australia” policy. I know that many Aussies feel very guilty about how the aborigines were almost wiped out in their own country.

    Bertram,

Regarding “going off the point”, when I started making you feel uncomfortable about what you’d been saying, you’ve actually said that this article is about “whether or not we should vote.” I’ve looked again. Nothing of the sort; the article was about Sirisena’s claim that he would get tough when he feels it necessary. From there, it has veered towards whether we should abstain from voting. It just shows how incapable you are of sustaining a discussion.

I have now seen my earlier responses today. We now come to the point I want to state very clearly. Although the Netherlands themselves have now become a very liberal country, the records of people of Dutch descent on the subject of “racism” is just terrible. Not for a moment am I going to build an argument that you are a nasty man, but you’ve provided evidence of a nasty streak in you by attacking me so virulently, and by the sort of language that you’ve used. I may have my faults, but I’ve not made a public display of them.

It was the Boers (i.e. the descendants of the Dutch who speak an old form of the language, Africaans) who introduced apartheid, and kept it going in South Africa. I can’t write a book here! What say you to that?

When individuals marry people who are in many respects similar to them, it is understandable, and I have nothing against them. That is why I don’t want to launch a personal attack on you. Now for Sri Lanka: when after 200 years (i.e. at least six generations) , a social group is able to proclaim that it is racially pure, you can be quite sure that, as a group, you’ve been obsessed with preventing your members from marrying outside the fold. The Dutch Burgher Union at “Thunmulla”, Bambalapitiya, is a nice and welcoming place nowadays, and they’d like to welcome the more affluent Sinhalese and Tamils to mingle but not to marry – why?

    Will continue . . .

    Bertram, to continue . . .

If our genes determine our skin colour, and even other physical features like the shape of the nose, then clearly it will have a bearing on skills, intelligence, demeanor, outlook on life, likelihood of adhering to certain decencies etc. Of course, I started that list with features that can be viewed as objective, then brought in values. We’ve got to decide whether we’re going to talk in cold scientific terms, or talk what would normally be termed “religious”.

There are practical problems involved in maintaining that one ethnic group is superior to another because there are huge individual differences. Ethnic groups are not homogeneous. The cleverest group will have idiots in it; the most backward group will have a few who are exceptional in relation to that group, and will be at least of average cleverness if all of humankind is considered.

No, the denial of race-related traits is usually merely political correctness. People just don’t have the courage to seriously assert that one race is superior to another, but I am willing to grant that such a proposition is perfectly rational. When getting down to the nitty gritty, however, there are problems like how you measure the intelligence or other characteristics given huge culturally and occupational disparity. On what scientific basis do you make out that a guys ability to survive in a tropical jungle indicates less intelligence than survival in concrete jungles where there is cut-throat competition?

The conclusion must be this: when we decry racism, what we are claiming is that human beings have moral values. By propounding racist thoughts, you are debasing yourself. The guy who rises above such considerations is not for a moment demonstrating that he is superior in terms of his fitness for survival (i.e. biologically more developed) , but is morally superior. Now that is a quite valueless assertion in the world of Ethics – and the ethically superior guy is not going to make those silly assertions.
