Ven Vendaruwe Upali Thero, the Anunayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter delivering an anusasana on the occasion of an almsgiving marking the 69th birthday of Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he should opt for military rule if this is what is necessary to build the country.
Ven Upali, noting that Gotabaya is referred to as a Hitler, suggested that if that is the case he should be one and build the nation.
‘What we need is a leadership that has the blessings of Mahinda Rajapaksa and is linked with Buddhism, the Buddhist Order and the Sinhalese. We can see that the law has completely broken down. We need a leader who shows fidelity to the doctrine (dahami naayakayek),’ Ven Upali also said.

It is shocking that a very senior member of the Buddhist Institution in Sri Lanka is giving any kind of acceptability to Hitler and giving respectability to that tyrant.. The Venerable Thero obviously doesn’t know anything about Hitler to give advice to GR to be a “Hitler” if need be.. You are correct after the war Germany lost large parts of is eastern territories including east Prussia to Poland and Russia. More than 10 million Germans ( at that time in 1945) were forced to leave their lands homes and farms and move into modern German borders, as their lands became parts of western Poland and Russia. The Anunayaka is clearly interested in “building up the country”, which is a noble goal. If indeed we are so unfortunate as to be ruled by a dictator, we must hope as the Anunayaka does, that the dictator does “build up the country”, rather than fatten himself and his kith and kin.
One aspect of the task of “building up the country” must surely be the abolition of reactionary and feudal Nikaya hierarchies, of which Asgiriya is an outstanding example. We must hope that the Anunayaka, as champion of “building up the country” would readily agree to the socialization of the vast properties and incomes held by the monasteries, including his own.
It is a well-known fact that there are glaring inequities of wealth in the system of monasteries. Many poor monasteries struggle for their daily sustenance and are unable to support important tasks like the education of young monks.
Monastic wealth should be vested in a Public Trust with funds disbursed to the different monasteries according to need. This is to hold monastic property according to the Buddhist ideal of ownership by the whole Sangha, of all directions and of all time — past, present and future.

There is an issue with some members of sangha nowadays. Their level of intelligence is very poor. A friend of mine told me it was due to their family back ground since most of them are ordain from very poor families because the parents are unable to feed them. Sadly these parents have no basic education or inborn intelligence and as a result probably these qualities are transferred to their children s genes. When such children become priest no wonder they admire Hitler……..Just wondering whether this priest ” Vederuwe Upali” had such parents to admire Hitler?
