Impeachment: ‘She Got Too Big For Her Boots’ – Mahinda Rajapaksa Talked To Former CJ Sarath Silva

By Colombo Telegraph

President Mahinda Rajapaksa told former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva yesterday that he was keen to resolve the problems with the judiciary in an amicable way.

Asked why he was moving to impeach the present Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake when she was an eminent judge with excellent legal skill, President Rajapaksa replied: “I didn’t want to, but she got too big for her boots.” (eya tharamata wada idimuna). “But I also want to settle this matter in a friendly way,” he said

The pair met at the funeral of former Attorney General and Acting Chief Justice Rajah Wanasundera yesterday, President Rajapaksa made a bee-line for the former Chief Justice and enveloped him in a warm bear hug. “You don’t even take my calls anymore. Whatever happens you and I are old friends,” President Rajapaksa berated Silva amidst a large crowd from the legal fraternity. Many of lawyers and retired judges present at the funeral urged the President to reconsider the proposed impeachment of the Chief Justice.

The ruling coalition yesterday handed a motion of impeachment to Speaker of Parliament Chamal Rajapaksa against the sitting Chief Justice bearing the signatures of 117 MPs and containing charges of ‘improper conduct’ filed under Article 107 of the Constitution.

Impeach Rajapassa he has overplayed his hand and demonstrated great contempt for the Sri Lankan people – the time has come! Send the bugger to the Hague for a war crimes trial
The judiciary is higher than the legislature or executive in any democracy and bringing frivolous secret charges against the CJ is a criminal offense and contempt of court and shows the executives contempt for the Sri lankan people and citizens.
Time has come for regime change and for a united opposition to go on the streets, The geriatric leftists should quit the dictator and join the opposition as should all the other SLFP members who value democracy.

I strongly believe that govt will not go ahead with this motion. More than CJ, it bad for UPFA and MR, internationally. CJ is just one person but govt credibility go to rock-bottom on the eyes of international players.

      @Jamal
The UPFA and the country are run by MR and his family. You think MR and his goons give two hoots about government credibility and what the international community thinks about them? As long as China bankrolls them (which will have to be paid by SL citizens one day) and as long as China and Russia supports them at the UN, MR and his goons will do anything they want. What MR and Company getaway with the tacit support of China and Russia’s veto power is similar to what Mervin Silva gets away with under the patronage of MR. But there is a price to pay for all this, and that price will be paid in blood when one day when the people finally rise up to oust the MR family.

        Presidunce:
You forgot to mention a fact that is salient insofar as Russia and China are concerned: The leaders of both countries have been proven to be totally immoral and to steal from their own treasuries as witness the recent New York Times (and other media) exposes of the massive enrichment of the latter’s leaders.
This is a classic case of birds of a feather flocking together!

Jamal, do you seriously believe that this bugger has any nicities or concerns of credibility? Little does the bugger know he too has grown too big for his boots. Not only CJ this bugger too has to be removed, for this country to have sanity.

      I concur with Jamal’s comment.
MR will be foolish to go ahead with this impeachment
when all learned citizens are against.
Even the Budhist prelates jointly came with a statement
not to proceed [but this is probably the work of MR as a face saving
      stunt].

    Quoting from the article:

“You don’t even take my calls anymore. Whatever happens you and I are old friends,” President Rajapaksa berated Silva amidst a large crowd from the legal fraternity.

Is this man (MR) a friend of anyone ? except to Mervin – the filthy mouth.

At the time Baratha was murdered by his close confidiants, this man was reported to have shed crocodile tears – saying that Baratha was close to him – but what is seen is NOT even an independent crime investigations were carriet out yet.

Only example for his friendship with Mervin – there are dozens of incidents inclu. the latest issue focusing on Mervins son Malayaka and the related openly biased crime investigations

There is much more to this than meets the eye. The CJ will do much
damage to the illegal regime and in which process she will court much
personal danger from an uncultured family of a long criminal history.
If the former CJ actually declined to take calls from the Monarch, his
tainted image in the public eye will be greatly enhanced. The Gang has much more sense than to take the CJ/SC and the former CJ together.
Their style is single battles with individual nemesis. They will not commit the mistake of Upali W, where he fought several battles with
VVIPs simultaneously – and lost badly.

MR knows this issue will place him directly in conflict with world bodies and the international community. He will find a modus operandi to reduce the heat. That includes even eating humble pie.

AS I DO NOT SUPPORT ANY POLITICAL PARTY, NEITHER A EXTREMIST. [BUDDHISTS ARE NOT EXTREMISTS, AND SHOULD NOT BE EXTREMISTS].

DOES THIS MAHENDRA PERCY RAJ PASSA THINK THAT, THE SRI LANKA’S PRESIDENCY IS HIS MOTHER’S DOWRY OR HIS WIFE’S DOWRY TO WHATEVER THE GIL MART HE CAN DO WITH THE POWER WRESTED TO THAT RESPECTABLE POST.

ATTORNEY GENERAL AND CHIEF JUSTICE POST ARE MOST SACRED POSTS IN CIVIL LIBERTY AND IN A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY.

IF SOME LUNATICS OR PSYCHOPATHS DO RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH THOSE, THEY ARE TRAITORS TO THE NATION , PRESENT AND FUTURE.

TRAITORS ARE NOT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE PINPOINTING MISTAKES TO GET CORRECTED.

        0

Well said Mahinda should not just hug his foolish numb skulled old friend not, only for helping himself on behalf of Hambantota but, also the foolish judgement on allowing MPs to be bought after receiving the vote from trusting voters. He should have gone down on his knees!
Both these men to gether ruined Sri Lanka and its Judiciary. Power went to their empty skulls

The Rajapaksa’s are “judging” others by their own low standards. We don’t have to guess twice who really is too big for his boots, and the shameless arrogance of power. The Sri Lankan people have been used like a door mat by the Rajapaksa’s. Getting rid of the terrorists, does not give you the right to abuse your power and strip this country of democracy, or make you king.

Whist we are serious about the removal of the CJ, the modus operandi of
a rowdy mentality will be known by his next appointee – it has to be
Mohan! Then all the Public Interest cases due to come up will be
“beautifully” ended. Who cares about the IC. Even the latest Jurist
Report of 158 pages can go to the dogs.
A place will next be provided in China for the whole family of rouges
when the axe falls; to take-off from the new airport down south!

    • 0
      0

You said” place will next be provided in China “
Chinese are different folk who are there for pure business and when push comes to a show they will simply leave. China was very close to Sudan because of Oil contracts and now where is the Oil and where is China. The chinese always have several plans for just in case and are able to stick to it because its run like a cooperation year on year while we look for a change every 5 years – good or bad. Hambantota is not that important because they are developing Maldives and are very big there. 300k folk live in Maldives and they draw 1 million high spending tourist while SL still draws the hippy type low spenders because they are factory workers or the unemployed on a cheap holiday. SL folk cant afford to use the super highway while it cost less than a starbucks coffee so all you find are dead dogs than folk.
Its all about Kattaya, Mottaya,Tattaya and Matare Magic Gonibillas that was the scene even at the funeral as above.

THIS CHAP IS A “DEPATH NAYA” WHEN THINGS GET HOT FOR HIM, WHICH THEY CERTAINLY HAVE OVER THE ‘CJ’ ISSUE THEN HE SPEAKS AS IF HE IS FRIENDLY WITH ALL AROUND. DID HE HAVE TO GO FOR A FUNERAL OF A LEGAL ENTITY, WHERE HE KNEW THERE WOULD BE ALL THE TOP LEGAL EAGLES, TO SAY TO THE FORMER CJ ” WHATEVER HAPPENS YOU AND I ARE OLD FRIENDS” WHEN THEY WERE NOT EVEN ON TALKING TERMS ? WHAT DID HE MEAN BY “WHATEVER HAPPENS”? THE ARTICLE SAYS THAT ‘ MANY OF THE LAWYERS AND FORMER JUDGES (AT THE FUNERAL) URGED HIM TO RECONSIDER THE IMPEACHEMENT OF THE CJ’. CAN YOU JUST VISUALISE THE SCENE AT THE FUNERAL, WHEN THIS WAS TAKING PLACE ? HE IS A MASTER SCHEMER, AND KNOWS HOW TO WRIGGLE OUT OF ANY SITUATION. HE WILL NOW MAKE AN UTTERANCE TO SAY HE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED THE PLEAS OF THE LAWYERS AND JUDGES TO RECONSIDER THIS IMPEACHEMENT BUT FOUND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DO SO. THAT IS WHAT HE MEANT BY THAT UTTERANCE.
GUYS, BEWARE OF THE BEAST !! DONT FALL FOR HIS SUGAR COATINGS.

Not delivering judgement to favour & prop up the dictatorial regime amounts to “getting too big for her boots”!
This never happens in any other democracy – but,do we have a democracy?
If she is replaced by a puppet CJ,it will be the last nail in the coffin for democracy.

Do you seriously think ordinary folks who have been voting MR with higher and higher majorities at every election would ‘follow’ LeD robber barons and money sharks and let start another Syria here? You guys live afar and hallucinate unattainable.

Besides, you guys who oppose MR do not analyse why ordinary Sinhala villages rally around MR and distance RW. UNP cannot see the root of the problem. Change of UNP hierarchy after Premadasa has changed its orthodox outlook for Sri Lanka future. And that is the main reason for the downward trend of UNP. It’s an open secret that the base of the UNP is taken over by ardent ecumenical type Christians camouflaged as Buddhists.

So, gossips and rumors of lies couldn’t topple MR or shove RW to power, or cover up the new line up of the UNP. Besides lies need more lies to sustain. In the end thrash rally only the likes of those who created them. Mark my word, they’ll be proved wrong at the next Presidential or General election as well.

CAN YOU PROVE THAT ORDINARY MASSES VOTED HIM TO THE MANNER YOU PRAISED IN THIS WAY? IF NOT FOR COMPUTER GIMMICKS AND VOTE RIGGING THE RELATED – HE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN REELECTED. READ THE SPEECHES OF FORMER EC and HELP MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENTS please.

Besides, you guys who oppose MR do not analyse why ordinary Sinhala villages rally around MR and distance RW. UNP cannot see the root of the problem

THIS WILL SURELY CHANGE DRASTICALLY ONCE IT WAS THE CASE IN ISRAEL. DONT BE THAT PLEASED – EVERYTHING WILL COME OUT AHEAD OF YOU ONCE CJ ´s IMPEACHMENT IS THROUGH

Besides lies need more lies to sustain. In the end thrash rally only the likes of those who created them.

IF YOU ARE STILL SANE, ALL THESE YOU HAVE TO HAVE GOT ALREADY WHILE CONTINUING YOUR LIFE BY RETURNING TO THE COUNTRY: WAIT AND SEE WHAT WILL BE THE CASE NO SOONER:

Becoming too big for her boots? This monster has already outgrown his beginings and lost all sense of decency. How else could someone table an annonymous letter (kala pathare) in the hallowed precints of parliment? Ever heard a President of a country stooping to that level.

I worked for a reputed mercantile firm and once I was with the managing director and others. He received some mail and one was an anonymous letter. He did not even read it, tore it up and threw it straight into the WPB. He told us that he never reads such letters. This was in the 1980’s.

Today we have a gang of nincompoops who thrive on international conspiracies and want to control every Tom, Dick and Harry. They appoint people and discard them as if they are condoms. Woe onto anyone who crosses their mighty paths.

Zaheer, first learn English proper to express yourself, without killing the Queen. Next, read and try to understand what others say without just rushing in to comment. Where has RW said that he will extend support to MR to Impeach the CJ? I am sure you must be dreaming thinking having a Whiskey, whereas it must be urine of someone, as you must have slept on the job. First of all I have never herd any President of a country uttering about another VIP with “got too big for boots”. Can he explain where CJ got too big….and when anything gets too big it’s to be discarded. She only did her duty and the time came to put a stop to constant finger tickling her. If only anybody could teach MR to mind his own business and not to finger tickle others businesses, work and duty Sri Lanka will be a better place. He knows there are no permanent friends and to keep his friendship at home.

If the UNP has ecumenical christians under the guise of buddhism, so what does it matter to you, after all they are all sri lankans, this country is not only for the buddhists who inherited their religion from India, havent you understood this counry as multi-religious, multi-cultural living aside each other for centuries, are you one of discarded MR’s condoms…

    sekerta,
Don’t be cocky and show up your daftness; just leave my qualifications to me.

You may prostrate and worship your queen and her tongue as much as you like; but don’t insult others for not being able to use a lingo fluently. It’s shear boorishness. I think; one must be ashamed only if he/she cannot use his/her own language properly. Beside, being able to speak and write a bit of English is nothing. In Uganda, Kenya, SA and few other countries even tramps use your queen’s language in proper syntax to beg, yet it doesn’t help them to collect enough.

How does the Americans do it?

The President of the United States of America (acronym: POTUS)[7] is the head of state and head of government of the United States. The president leads the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces.
Article II of the U.S. Constitution vests the executive power of the United States in the president and charges him with the execution of federal law, alongside the responsibility of appointing federal executive, diplomatic, regulatory, and judicial officers, and concluding treaties with foreign powers, with the advice and consent of the Senate. The president is further empowered to grant federal pardons and reprieves, and to convene and adjourn either or both houses of Congress under extraordinary circumstances.[8] Since the founding of the United States, the power of the president and the federal government have grown substantially[9] and each modern president, despite possessing no formal legislative powers beyond signing or vetoing congressionally passed bills, is largely responsible for dictating the legislative agenda of his party and the foreign and domestic policy of the United States.[10] The president is frequently described as the most powerful person in the world.[11][12][13][14][15][16]

Helena, I would be the first to disagree with Zaheer Mussamil, but your snide ‘advice’ to him to ‘murder your own kind as we can see in Syrian and other states of yr (sic) kind’ is tad on the racist side and conflicts with your noble thought on ecumenical Christians being in the UNP as okay. Of course I second that point and also your view that ‘all are Sri Lankans. I think a little civility is called for.

Remember it was not long ago that Sri Lankans were killing Sri Lankans in 1971 and 1988/89 and more recently the bombing by air of Tamil civilians that is assuming we accept Tamils also as Sri Lankans.

Not knowing English should not be a barrier to communicate, but your advice is in order. Maybe he’ll learn. We were not born speaking English after all, were we?

Those who boast about the development as had not been seen in the last few decades are common with many other countries too. Even ETHIOPIA today is not comparable to its states as had been in the past few decades. So the road constructions and tele communications were improved already in CBK^s govt – not running the national carrier as seen it today. Today billions are not winning but loosing. Making the country for Chinese to use as one their work sites. Chinese are more or less like – parasites. THAT IS KNOWN TO THE WEST. They produce lowest product to attack the other business shareholders. They do whatever to win their locations. Idiotic leaders like Rajapakshes get caught by their tricks.
