Attacks on mosques stir anew religious tensions in Sri Lanka, where about 9 per cent of the population — 1.4 million — practise Islam.
Cellphone cameras captured the ugly scene: Muslims being chased through the streets by maddened Buddhists.
The vandals had just attacked a mosque in the Grandpass neighbourhood on the capital’s outskirts, falling upon Muslims at Friday prayers, smashing windows, then pursuing the worshippers with clubs, hurling stones. At least five people were hospitalized.
That was in early August and stirred anew religious tensions in this country, where about 9 per cent of the population — 1.4 million — practise Islam. Most are known as Moor Muslims, descendents of Arab traders who plied their trade along Sri Lanka’s coast as far back as the eighth century.

Muslims supported the Sinhala Nationalists during the decades that the GOSL waged war on the Tamils in the East and the North and supported pogroms and discrimination elsewhere. Now Muslims are whining about being victims, the height of irony and the chickens coming home to roost for Muslims.
The 2011 book Zeylanica by a Muslim Sri Lankan states that a prominent Muslim leader sidded with the Sinhala Nationalists in pushing for the Sinhala Only act, this even while there were many Sinhalese people who were against the act.
The writer is incorrect in stating Muslims have replaced Tamils as the perceived enemies because non Muslim Tamils are still considered the number 1 enemy by GOSL as evidenced by GOSL domination of the Tamil North and East. Christians have also come under attack and only recently a Church in Hikkaduwa was razed to the ground, so why is the writer ignoring all these non Muslims who were and are the targets of the Nationalists.

The problem is the double standards by Muslims. Pakistan was created for Muslims only and is overhwhelmingly Muslim. Bangladesh which used to be East Pakistan is also considered a Muslim land for Muslims. Maldives does not allow non Muslims to get citizenship and is essentially a Muslim land.

If ethnics must go to their states of origin ( as Dias’s statement avers) then Dias must go to Portugal as the latter has a Portuguese name. I like to continue that logical thread by saying that Sinhalese should go to North India, Tamils to South India and leave Sri Lanka to the Veddas.

Muslims, Budhists and Hindus are an integral part of Sri Lankan society. Occasionally problems surface due to misunderstandings, suspicion and rumor. There is another cause for ugly incidents,that is irresposible reporting, that sets out to inflame communal tensions. Muslims face a challenging time in Sri Lanka, however, the violence experienced by the community is nowhere near as in UK, France, Holland, Sweden, and Denmark. Are the Muslims in those western countries the New Jews to be kicked around? This woman R Dimanno’s intentions are subversive in that it appears, as the headline suggest, she would like to create more tensions that lead to more violence. The dogs mark their territory by urinating on various lamposts. When a foreign dog approaches they start barking. If the foreign dog is strong enough, he just ignores them and walks in and starts sniffing the local bitches. The local dogs get very wild and keep barking but can do anything about it. Very soon there are pups littered fathered by the foreign dog. After that they all get mixed up and live their doggy lives.
Most people here have migrated from other countries in the distant past. We are now part and parcle of this nation called Sri Lanka. So there is no reason to be at each others throats. The so call nationalist movement is about dominating others by artificial means. Instead of competing on a level playing field these patriots try to hog the entire road and block others from coming up in life. Kill and live is their policy. Live and let live should be the solution. We are supposed to be better than animals?

There are purebreds like Alsations, Dalmations, Dashounds, Spaniels, Pomeranians, Pekinese etc. Then there is the Mongrel which is the mixed one AKA Pariah. Nowadays the purebreds are very less and mostly we have pariahs. Pariahs are very strong, innovative and resilient. They learn to survive under all conditions.
Then we have the pedigree. When I was a boy I had an Alsation which was said to be sired by Rex, a Police Dog. Nowadays pedigree is rare as many are mixed. Anyhow does it matter if doggy is sired by so and so. What matters are his qulaities and attributes.

If I ask you what dogs do when they run into each other, I’m sure you’d readily answer that they sniff each others’ butts out. But if I ask you why they do it and if you are not able to come up with the answer with equal certainty and ease, that means you were not concentrating when this matter was dealt with by your hot science teacher in Grade 8. Probably you were ogling her rather than listening to her. Let me then recall the lesson for your benefit.
Dogs didn’t always behave this way. On the contrary, this phenomenon of butt-sniffing is good example of adaptation to changing environment as per the theory of evolution.
Before this evolutionary change occurred in their behaviour, dogs used to go ballroom dancing on Fridays and Saturdays. This went on without any hindrance for thousands of years until a terrible incident occurred in London that fundamentally changed the dogs’ world forever.
It was the early 1940s and though it was a dark and story night, since it was a Friday, hundreds of dogs had gathered at a famous ballroom dance venue. You know, the dogs those days had a custom of removing their butts and hanging them in the cloakroom at social functions as a matter of courtesy and decorum that such occasions demanded – just like we humans remove our coats. And of course the dogs did it also for the more mundane reason of keeping the floor free of any funny aromas. The dog couples then started their evening of dance with a Victor Silvester tune.
BOOM ! Unfortunately the 2nd World War had just broken out, and that fateful night Hitler launched his first aerial bombardment of London. Bombs fell on this dance hall as well and the roof came crashing down. Flames spread all over. Great pandemonium broke out among the dogs. In no time they scrambled out with whatever butts they could grab onto in the melee in the cloakroom and fled for their dear lives. Inevitably their butts got mixed up.
Since that day our dog friends are on constant look out for their original butts. They are eternally seeking to reunite with their lost behinds. They never fail to check out each and every member of their species they encounter by carrying out the sniff test.
There you go SAFA. Next time you are in a class, pay attention.
