India May Back U.N. Resolution On Lanka If It Meets Its Objectives

By THE HINDU

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Amidst mounting pressure from ally DMK and other parties, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said India was “inclined to” vote in favour of a resolution on Sri Lanka at the U.N. which meets “our objectives” with regard to the future of ethnic Tamils.

Responding to strong concerns of political parties, Dr. Singh told the Lok Sabha that India was yet to receive the final text of the draft resolution moved at the UN Human Rights Council.

“We are inclined to vote in favour of the resolution if the resolution will cover our objectives namely the achievement of a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka that is based on equality, dignity, justice and self respect,” he said while replying to the debate on Motion of Thanks to the President for her address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

His statement, which was received by thumping of desks including by DMK members, assumes significance as the key ally has said it would discuss the issue including the option of withdrawing from the UPA over it at the party’s internal meeting on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said that Tamils in Sri Lanka have been accorded the highest priority by his government and it is in touch with the Sri Lankan government in this regard.

The Indian government has emphasised that there should be a “genuine process” of reconciliation to address the grievances of the ethnic Tamils and implement the recommendations of a report of a high-level committee placed before Parliament, he said.

For lasting peace, India has asked Sri Lankan government to stand by its commitment, to broaden the dialogue with political parties, including with the Tamil National Alliance to achieve forward looking and meaningful devolution of power, Dr. Singh said.

The Prime Minister said he hoped that the Sri Lankan government would realise the criticality of this issue. “We will remain engaged with them on this issue,” he said.

I never think that India will support for any matter on Sri Lanka’s Tamil conflict. This happened in the past, happens at present and will happen in the future. Because politicians want to be in power always. Nothing to worry about India’s decision to back UN resolution because the future of Sri Lanka has on Sri Lankans hand and not in hands of INDIA or USA.

I don’t get it. GOSL is against the resolution. So India votes for it , GOSL is no longer under obligation to India to maneuver them Tamils are already getting them sans N&E, which may take time. After all US is still to do this in Iraq . That happened before. In this Political Chess game , I feel , the Tamils in N&E are going to end up in a worse state. Diaspora is not interested in Common Tamil man in Jaffna. Their’s is a Political Agenda with MR

After receiving a good tight slap across it’s face India is now concerned about the domestic politics and playing to the gallery of South India. But here ‘s the deal. Whether ithe Resolution is passed or not passed – India is the loser, USA is already the biggest loser, Sri Lanka cannot lose either way, if it can, on it’s way down, unmask the hypocracy of the US, UN and India the unholy trio to the rest of South Asia and the world.

Now if individual soldiers commited war crimes, then they should be investigated. If they did it on the authority of other commanding officers, then they too should be investigated.

That is what the resolution calls for. This is nothing unreasonable. Rubbishing the evidence by insulting who provides it just doesnt work.

In our modern history, most powerful politician is former president JRJ. One of JRJ’s outburst ruined our country for three decades, by insulting Indira Gandhi. Now we are going to fight again with other Indian politicians. America has long before decided to Install Jayalalitha as Indian PM. JRJ had west with him, but our present politician has only Iran Cuba and may be 5% of China. Our next 25 to 30 years going to another war or big disaster?. It is a lost cause fighting with India and US. These are two Super powers now
