Is Chandrika The Best Option?

By  P. Bertie  Ranaweerage

Bertie Ranaweerage

Many believe that the next Presidential election will  be held at the end of this year or within the first four months of 2015. Everybody who is interested in politics knows that the incumbent President  will contest  for the third time. Now the question is who is going to be the common candidate  to challenge Mahinda?

Will Chandrika challenge President  Mahinda Rajapaksa at the next presidential election?

Will Chandrika  be the common candidate of the Opposition?

Or will Rev. Maduluwawe Sobhitha  Thera be the choice of the Opposition?

At a press conference held recently She denied the rumors that she was going to contest at the forthcoming Presidential election in spite of the requests she has received from  various political parties. In the same breath she  said nothing is permanent.

Students of politics know that politicians throughout the world lie and Chandrika is not an exception.

And she has reasons to  deny of her candidature  too.

She won all the elections she contested , from provincial council election to Parliamentary elections to Presidential election and was  elected President of Sri Lanka twice .Hence she will not contest at the future Presidential election unless she feels her victory is well  guaranteed. She knows well that to retire from politics defeated ,will damage her international repute she enjoys at present and further more it will be the beginning a witch hunt.

CBK 6 colombotelegraphIt is also not easy for her  to take a decision to contest at the future election as Mahinda represents her own political party which was founded by her father.

Yet she has been active during the past few months visiting friends, participating in various functions and funerals. Her recent involvement in  giving leadership to  a forum for promoting religious harmony has aroused much interest in many political circles .Is it the first step she took towards active politics?

There are grounds to believe that her political enemies in the government are scared of her coming out of  a political cocoon. The merciless attack launched by the Daily News recently on her  in connection with her involvement in promoting religious harmony, speaks for itself

My belief is that she will probably contest at the  next Presidential election only if she is assured  of the support of the UNP, the TNA, the Muslim Congress, the JVP, the DNA ,  and most importantly ,the unstinted support of the powerful dissidents of the SLFP.

We cannot expect a candidate from the UNP at the next Presidential election as it is becoming weaker and weaker by the day due to internal conflicts, infightings, mudslinging and divisions in the party. Its members as well as organizers are so demoralized that the UNP has been unable to get  even a few thousand of UNPers to Colombo to demonstrate against the government in the recent past.

In case the  former military commander Sarath Fonseka decides to contest at the next Presidential election he is very much unlikely to win as he will have to fight a lonely battle as the UNP and the JVP are unlikely to support him again as both the parties have learnt bitter lessons by supporting him at the last Presidential election. It is politically better for him and for his political party not to contest rather than to contest and lose.  As such I do believe that he will support Chandrika if she contests as the common candidate.

Then , what about  Rev. Maduluwave Sobhitha Thera? Will he  contest?

According to a news item published in the ‘Sunday Leader’ recently the Thera has been asked to contest as the common candidate.( The news item did not mention who had  made the request) He has further told the reporter that he had held discussions with regard to his candidature with some political parties and he will take a decision in the future.

One has to admit that the Tamil and Muslim political parties are suspicious of Buddhist religious leaders as they are considered pro Sinhalese ,let along playing any role in national reconciliation. Due to numerous attacks on non Buddhist religious places led by yellow thugs during the last couple of  years, Tamil and Muslim political parties will never ever think of  supporting Rev. Sobhitha Thera however much he seems to be a good candidate. The  Sinhala Catholics/ Christians too will think twice before casting their votes for a Buddhist priest. Even racist priests will campaign for Mahinda not for Rev. Sobhitha Thera. Mahinda’s supporters would say during the campaign that the LTTE or TNA will form a separate government in the North if a priest becomes the President simply because a Buddhist priest cannot order armed forces to kill terrorists.

Under the above circumstances, it is obvious that there is no any other prominent personality in the political landscape other than CBK who can command  support of the majority of political parties, dissident SLFPers and civil organizations.

Some  criticize her for not doing enough for the country  during her rule from 1994 to 2005. Her supporters would say she liberated the Jaffna peninsula from the LTTE. And her supporters would say that she did her level best to introduce a much better constitution which had provisions to abolish the executive Presidency and to devolve meaningful powers to the North and East as a peaceful solution to the ethnic question. Her supporters further would say that there were no attacks on non Buddhist religious places during her 11 year rule.

In the event Chandrika re-enters the political arena as the common candidate with the support of the majority of political parties and the dissidents of the SLFP she has to present a revolutionary action plan which convinces the electorate that this time she means business.

Her priority should be  to abolish the executive Presidency within a period of two years by  means of a new constitution .

And her next step should be to abolish the proportional  representation electoral system  through which corrupt businessmen, rapists, heroin dealers , uneducated fools and thugs and yellow racists became the  representatives of people in local government councils, provincial councils and Parliament whose sole objective is nothing but earning money by hook or by crook. It is only a couple of months ago Mangala said that a lot of Members of Parliament earn money through drug business.

Her job does not end there. Through a new constitution she has to restore democracy,  rule of law and independence of judiciary and find a lasting solution to the ethnic question.

But we know the man in the street does not vote  merely for democracy, rule of law, good governance, independence of judiciary and a lasting solution to the ethnic problem. He will vote for the candidate who he thinks will give him a square meal.

It is up to the Opposition to present a well thought out action plan to heal the country in case they decide to put forward madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as the common candidate at the next Presidential election to challenge the incumbent President who still seems to be  popular.

One thing is certain. There is a possibility that the present government will be toppled within three months.

Ranil Wickremasinghe will stage a come back as the present government is fully bankrupt. Mahinda cannot keep on boasting about developments, because of the change that is taking place, any party that comes to power will engage in development and would have defeated the terrorists. All democratic countries have now joined to eradicate terrorism by all means, as it is evil. As such MR cannot boast that it is he who had defeated terrorism. Now just see what happened between Gota and Sarath. I am of the view that the TNA will give its support to Ranil. It is time that Ranil should isolate Sajith and his unwanted crowd in the best interests of the country. Chandrika has already missed the fine opportunity she had because of Anuruddha Ratwatte. Majority of the professionals and academics eventually will favour Ranil. Moreover, there may cross-overs from Mahinda’s party to the UNP because of frustration on account of family bandyism and over the collapse of several institutions.

Great article Sir. CBK is the only candidate to even put up a fair game, she was not a perfect president, in fact i would have been reluctant to categorize her as a good leader even. That being said she is the only option we have. Sad to see a country such as ours, does not posses a opposition strong enough to offer a proper candidate. As said CBK will only enter the game if she knows she can win, my prediction is that she won’t contest. Its too much of a risk for her, the opposition is in shambles and the government is too strong. The only thing we can do is stand and watch this country plummet .

Bottomline is -CBK is the democratic civilized person if asked about to compare her with the devil in power.
If her adminstration was CRIME friendly, she could have anhiliated the LTTE terror, but world would never allow civilians to be attacked to the manner MR and his murderous outfit finished it. The situation is more or less like –

to erradicate Dengue fever, you would not burnt down all the physical structures with its inhabitants – that is how MR anhiliated own folks (for him, they are tamils, but for CBK they were srilankens- that is the great difference).

Even other predecessors would have succeeded the war if their mentalities were so killing minded. Today, even after killing them to all inhuman way, they further destroy cemetries of the tamil folks like stabing and hurting further. Not knowing what he has been doing. Those poor notherners are repeatedly hit by MR – becuase of lack of the respect towards dignity, sensitivity as the other president held was essential.

      Sillysil,

      Agree.

Amazing we do not have a field of qualified candidates who love this country to select one candidate from.

We always end up with the best among really awful candidates.

CBK’s track record is well known. She is better than clan leader from Hambantota. But, that’s all.

She is corrupt, arrogant and inefficent. Thinks Sri Lanka is a family business.

It is time we closed this revolving door to these power hungry, corrupt politicians.

Sri Lanka was finally relieved when CBK finally left at the end of her 2nd term.

Alas, we were in a for real surprise with the arrival of the worst form of nepotism seen in this country. This time from Hambantota.

True. Rats in SLFP are waiting till they are sure Rajapassa ship will sink before they jump. They may well get on board the new ship.

Yet, they are all stinking rats. Therefore Sri Lanka will not make much progress.

      Truly unfortunate!

PS: CBK is desperate to be President again. She has never had a decent job since leaving office. Politics in Sri Lanka is the only place where she can seek fulltime work. Given her dismal achievements.

as usual most of the commentors getting the wrong side of the stick , yes it is true that CBK was corrupt to the core and had miserably failed during her long 11 years of tenure ,the issue at hand is how to GET RID of Rajapakse junta regime democratically , in-order to achieve this gargantuan/impossible task , we need a person with matching credentials /qualities akin to MR , some of the most sought after qualities of the candidate are ,

        1) being able to lie without batting an eye lid .
        2) have no sense of shame at all.
        3) corrupt to the core.
        4) being able to portray as the savior of SL.
        5) being able to split the SLFP vote base in to half.
        6) being able to attract UNP,Gen SF ,JVP,TNA, Muslim parties and all other small parties.

can any one name a better person than CBK to challenge mighty Rajapakse ? my preference is ven sobitha thero ,though ! but question remains , does Ven sobitha Thero have the above qualities ?

Former CJ Silva? You crazy? This pervys first task will be to make the Diyawanna area a nudist colony. Thereafter he will tinker with the constitution as he pleases and make it so unconstitutional that even those decently clothed will be prosecuted and jailed for life, just for being decently clothed. Be careful about what you wish for.

              Sri lal,
But leopards don’t change their spots. She will go shooting and shopping. What a pity if the tamils can select someone like Wiggy why can’t the Sinhalese.
BTW you expected the call for the ruling family to have their wings clipped than embargo like Syria where it did not work. When some Indian MP’s spoke of NaMo’s visa to Nisha she responded anything can happen at the state dept. at the last moment but now Namo is not interested because Americans and Britishers are queueing to open joint ventures with Mr Clean. It would be interesting to see how Obama handles that- its similar to calling India an unfair trading partner when the Americans could not have their way and finally giving in with 9/11. US needs Indian/Chinese money to fight them.
Keep your fingers crossed for MR to get hit.

Javi , pl let me reiterate this , getting rid of MR is not easy as you think , say he lost the election , he may not comply and will hang on to power like Burmese junta , RW is a gentleman and he is not a match for MR , only CBK ( real vatti amma )knows how to fight fire with fire.

PS : getting rid of CBK won’t be that hard Javi.

                  Sri lal,

Getting rid of the constitution is more important than personalities.

i was there to see IAF take off. I know its hard for you with everyone over there but its the quality of life that matters.

3 days like bangala is better than living day in and day out not knowing when you are going to see sun shine. With so many guns no politician would be in a position to govern.

To me both sinhalese, tamil, are the same as my blood and I will never agree on a partition of land that I enjoyed and cherished.
It is always nice to feel you are born free.

                    Sri Lal,
Both NaMo and Xi have commented against MR to date . Both have come through bigger patches than they would encounter as leaders. With the US out to destroy they are only getting closer together and Russia is just following them.

Burma it was possible because of resources and China still a Mao. Xi lived in caves because his father a general was sentenced to life for disagreeing with Mao.
Once Congress loses in a landslide India will for the first time be ruled by natives. Jinnha wife Petit was a Farsi refugee and Indira’s husband a (arranged by Nehru which she regretted) Feroze Gandhi a Farsi. So if the JT’s play their card right MR/Basil has no chance. India/Maratha don’t want Urdu, Persian (both foreign) just Sanskrit and your regional language.

        Dear Ben,

Running the country as a family business is an endemic problem to SL politics; if you are looking for a messiah then it might be a long time coming. CBK running for President will definitely shake things up – big time! This seems to be the only strategic option for dismantling the stranglehold the Rajapaksa’s have over this country. If it means holding my nose and voting for CBK to get rid of the triumvirate…. then that’s what I will do.

“The only thing we can do is stand and watch this country plummet.”

Sinhalese are as stupid as the Tamils but the Tamils having burnt their fingers have elected a man anyone would envy. Even in today’s parliament its the Tamils that oppose the animals that rule.

May be all this is because you never fought for independence but hid in Tamil Nadu Lungi Nede??

Europe is advanced because of all it’s wars.

Just think hard if abolishing the Presidency or a change in leadership is possible until the Tamil problem is finally resolved.

Its only once normalcy resolved a change in govt is possible. The Presidential 3rd term is also crucial. It will mark the final term after which Namal Rajapacke will be ready to take over.

If there is any time to break the continuity its now before the 3rd term starts.

And the idiot in power (MR and thugs) proved he is not able to restore peace since 2009 meeting with the sensitivties of the tamil people. Only a leader that has a human nature will touch the hearts of the tamil srilankens.

It is like asking butchers to respect the five precepts (panathi patha weramanee sikka padam samadiyami) as described in buddhism.

I think Ven Sobhitha Thero should be the next President with the express purpose of abolishing the Executive Presidiency, restoring Democracy and Independence of the Judiciary, revoking 18A, restoring 17A. He will have the support of all communities for this all important task.

    • 3
      2

This will never happen. He will never have the support of the majority. His rules prevent him from ordering the military and police into action. In fact he should not be dabbling in politics at all.

But if he was President the Tamil diaspora will be screaming about a Buddhist theocracy. The Catholics will say nothing because the Vatican is just that – a theocracy. The Tamil Catholics will seek medical advice.

    • 0
      0

Ven Sobhitha need not dabble in politics. He need not even campaign. Let the others do that for him. He will be an Apolitical President. His tenure will be only for the time required to repeal 18A and reinstate 17A. He need not even occupy Temple Trees or take control of the Military.

    • 0
      0

Even if CBK is appointed she cannot repeal 18A as under 18A she will be ineligible to hold the post of President for more than two terms.

Another important action by Ven Sobitha would be to restore the civic rights of Gen Sarath Fonseka. I am sure the minorities will have no issue in supporting a Righteous Monk of his standing.

    Bertie,

Your memory may be short, but not mine. CB no doubt is a better candidate than the present incumbent who has turned GOSL into a Mafia clan; however she herself is not without major faults of her own.

She was an opportunist President who pandered to the Sinhala chauvinists stymieing all efforts by Ranil and co when the latter was working towards a comprehensive peace deal with the tigers. For the same reason she was unreasonably critical towards the Norwegian mediators too. The misuse of tsunami funds was not the sole domain of MR either. There was strong suspicion that CB had her nose on the trough as well. MR is successful in eating and keeping the cake of power. CB tried hard to hold onto her Presidential gravy train but her efforts were scuttled via a successful Supreme Court challenge. So Bertie, don’t be in a rush to pave the way for CBs return. There surely are better candidates.

Well I will suggest that we promote ‘Nakuta Kota’ the pariah dog down our lane as the candidate for the next presidential elections. Why am I promoting a mangy, stray dog to be the next president of Sri Lanka.

‘Nakuta Kota’ will not bite the hand that feeds it. I know from my own experience. Whereas we feed and take care of the human President only to have him bite us on all quarters.

‘Nakuta Kota’ will not rob us whereas the human president will rob us of all what we have.

‘Nakuta Kota’ will care less about what the free media will write about it. Whereas a human president will buy the journalist and if it fails will intimidate, oppress and finally whitevanne the errant journalist.

‘Nakuta Kota’ will not form lucrative alliances with pandan karayas, kudu karayas and saffron robed thugs whereas the human president will do all that.

‘Nakuta Kota’ will not favour the Sinhalese or the Buddhists and oppress and discriminate minorities or act in any way arbitrary to the office that it will be chosen, whereas the human president will do all such nasty things.

Ah the list can go on and on. I say let us all promote ‘Nakuta Kota’ for next president of Sri Lanka.

It is nice reading the insightful article. I agree with every thing that has been explained. She is still popular among the people other than with the die hard MR fans. SLFP loyalists now regret having voted to a dictator twice. They will rally round her if at all she shows any inclination. Rajapakses know that she remains the Queen B amongst SLFP loyalists. That is the reason she is being hammered for taking a step in the right direction of promoting Religious harmony. Supposing she is nominated as the presidential candidate be sure she will be hauled to the bribery commission inspite of the fact that the very chief is corrupt! She will be lambasted with made up false allegations with rogue witnesses galore, when everything fails I fear for her life. Under these circumstances every right thinking person should plead with the UNHCR to make the four RAJAPAKSES guilty of crimes against their own people and take them to the ICC.

If anyone is capable of causing a stir in the ‘Medamulana ‘camp it would certainly be Madam CB and the former General SF as her Prime Minister with a declaration of an honest and open pledge to abolish the ‘Executive Presidency ‘ with a year and install General SF as prime minister in a government with the Parliament as the Supreme Authority.
In such an event, the people of this country should fully be able to understand the opportunity that will be available them to make all wrongs right. Because, at the rate this regime is going we will be under a dictatorial rule and be citizens with out any rights to call ours’.
If you do have an argument that what is the guarantee the CB/SF will abolish the EXEC/PRES rule..,i have non, but hope as many others’will have.
This would be the chance that CB will have to rectify some errors during her rule.
The UNP/Ranil and Co., can play second fiddle and wait a few decades for a regime of their own until such time the current ‘virus’ wipes out the old guard and some fresh blood takes over…I think the present UNP should co-operate and cleanse the mess they have done unto us masses..

If Chandrika is the best the opposition can come up with, then Mahinda has already won the next presidential election with nearly 55% of the votes.

Anyway, even if we suppose Chandrika wins, she will not solve the ethnic problem because she will not be able to keep the Sinhala extremists under control. Whether we like it or not, only the man who had the capacity to decimate the Tigers would also have the ability to solve the ethnic problem by keeping the Sinhala extremists under check.

I have met Rev. Sobitha once and being a Christian i can vouch that here is a true follower of the precepts of lord Buddha. He made us all who met him feel extremely relaxed and was appreciative of the fact that we believed in peaceful co existence. His thinking is simple. Why should this small Island fight over the prettiest of issues when all can live as long as there is justice and the law is applied to all regardless of power or position.

Is it not a fact that Prabakaran was created by us Sinhalese ? History has recorded how with every discriminatory act against a minority community Prabakaran s influence and power increased. Today what we have is a country where communal animosity is fuelled by a regime whose only mode of survival appears to be to inflame hatred and infuse fear in the majority. Geneva and UNHCR is the best campaign slogan to tell the gullible masses that the West is out to arrest the rulers. At the same time these same rulers will boot lick any western corrupt individual as long as their coffers get filled. To tell with the youth and their future let the casinos come in and let prostitution thrive as these are easy ways of making the young content. Let the masses believe that they are living in paradise while squeeze them of every penny they have. It’s simple. The people have been made to believe what they see and forget what they do not. Make a highway by borrowing at commercial interest rates and award the contract to a pre determined contractor who re cycles part of the funds to where they should go to. Who says the country is not developing ? Look around . See for yourself. True isn’t it ? Who lends to anyone who is not capable of paying ? The question is from who are we borrowing ?

Kill anyone who crosses the path of the rulers and use anyone as a scape goat. There are many who will volunteer as these are the saviour s of our nation. Protect them with your life for they are national treasures. Don’t call me a king call me your father says the ruler, which means quite literally is that i am a king but prefer you calling me your father and this means that even if your biological father is killed and the killers are my goons you still have me as your foster father to give you goodies that even your biological father could not have given. As a true father i would like my biological children to wear the best, eat the best and live life to the fullest while you my foster children should work hard and pay your taxes as it is your duty to develop the country and through this development also help my family amass wealth.

Ven. Sobitha needs to stop this curse and regardless of party, race ,ethnic or religious differences he should be supported to simply abolish this draconian executive presidency and restore the law if the country.

A Buddhist monk ruling a country is unacceptable. It is against the very principals Buddhism is based on. Politics & religion should be separate. If Ven Sobitha has political aspirations, he should first leave the priesthood but I doubt very much if he would have any clout without the religious backing, however honorable his intentions may be.

      Michael Ranasinghe

“Why should this small Island fight over the prettiest of issues when all can live as long as there is justice and the law is applied to all regardless of power or position.”

His thinking is very very simple indeed.

“Ven. Sobitha needs to stop this curse and regardless of party, race ,ethnic or religious differences”

First he has to stop those runaway saffron clad thugs from hurting the other minorities.

Second he has to voluntarily disrobe himself before contesting elections. Theocracy should not be allowed replace Kleptocracy.

What is the guarantee once he parked his bump on the chair he would still be interested in redrafting the constitution?

What is there for the minorities to gain from Ven. Sobith’s presidency?

Would he be interested in unity in diversity, would my people be allowed to sing national anthem in Veddah language?

Our people have very short memories !

Chandrika Showed a marked lack of discipline and commitment. The economy actually went into recession.

Surely there is someone new ?

Preferably from not from one of the “families” and definitely not a monk (however pious)who will contravene the vinaya to even contest.

Chandrika is the Best Option for the next Presidential Election. It is proved that Ranil is the worst option.

    • 4
      3

No, Ranil is not the worst.

Ranil´s future has been cornered by state media. For me and siginificant masses, he is a decent gentleman who respect human dignity, rule of law and order and educated people. Today there is zero press freedom within the country. No oppstion voices are given chance within the criminal minded environment already shaped up by the ruling oligarchs.

Any right thinking ones can raise the question – why they dont get balanced views on printed press within the country, though they appear to take the questions from dissident viewers in many of the press briefings. Latter became clear to me following CHOGM sessions. They questions posed by anti govt journalists were hardly found in local media.

yes Ranil is not the worst , but he will never win! sadly this is the ground reality.

Agree. Ranil is the most capable among this lot but is largely misunderstood by the masses because he is unable to play to the gallery like the rest & those who do in the party like Sajith are acting like the dog in the manger. I think Ranil is the only hope, provided he can reform the party by getting rid of the riffraff & bring in some intellectuals.

It is not intellectuals that Ranil needs. He needs upright, incorruptible people.

        Sharmini,
If either you or TissaraniG contest to guarantee the “chewing of the constitution” like the playwright of Czechoslovakia who died Sunday before last then the main issue of getting all the Holman out of Sri Lankans is out. CBK can never be trusted with power and to top it she spawned MR, Goota had dear LK murdered plus she has much blood on both hands more than Dayan Silva the professor.

We are also Kandy and know the significance of 1818 in the last British battle with the Maratha Dynasty (Ajanta/Sigiriya) for the control of East India Company from Dutch and how the Dutch had to withdraw from assisting Kandy, then its nutmeg brought from Indonesia for cultivation in Kandy district, the private invoices, stowaways etc. and the Dutch losing the republic to French same time, which the Dutch don’t deny because the Dutch power came from its mistress to the Roman Emperor Carlos 1 of Gent while his wife ably governed Spain as its Queen and his sister Catherine wife of Henery V111 father of Elizabeth 1 The Virgin Queen Linguist World Power.

Either of you contest like the playwright and do what he did then the majority vote is yours.

I know it’s hard with Gooota’s gun so only NaMo can silence the animal.

These guys who are promoting Chandrika as the common candidate write these articles trying hard to convince us that Sobhitha Thera will not be able to get votes from Tamils, Muslims and the Christians and as such Chandrika is the best bet. Tamils, Muslims and the Christians are not fools. They are able to judge what is best for the country. Even if the Thera can not get substantial number of those votes he definitely will be able to get majority of the Sinhala Buddhist votes and easily get more than the required 50% of votes at the election. The main problem though is whether the people will be able to convince the Thera to come forward as the common candidate. If the Thera refuses the request of the people then the Sri Lankans will have to live with a Rajapaksa as the leader for at least another 30- 40 years.

Regarding Chandrika, it is the Bandaranayakes who started ruining Sri Lanka and the Rajapaksas are just continuing that trend.

She must not be the common candidate, but she has enormous potential to drive the devil in power – I hope she will help any opposition party candidate in this regard. Right thinking masses wait a decent educated candidate to lead the nation. That is it.

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge may be the only option to break the Rajapakse strangle hold on this country, as quite well argued in this article. However, could the remedy turn out to be worse than the disease? On contemplating this question, I was reminded of a pithy exchange of words in Sinhala, that was popular when I was a child.

    ” Mokada Raley ledda?
    Kahi yanakota pada.
    Ekata Vedakama kos atta mallung!”

Could Chandrika turn out to be the ‘kos atta mallung’ that would worsen the malady?

The ‘ Executive power’ bestowed on our presidency and enfeebled checks and balances in our constitution, could intoxicate any incumbent President. The current incumbent will leave a rotten legacy in having made what was bad, worse- rotten and foul smelling! We have to make sure we do not make a fatal mistake again. How?, is the question to be pondered.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

“How?, is the question to be pondered.” As it stands NaMo is the way.

A Bernard Shaw quote( modified seed from oak)

Think of the fierce energy concentrated in an Brazilian nut (kos atta)

You bury it in the ground, and it explodes into Yellow sap Jak Tree!

Bury a sheep (CBK/Goota), and nothing happens but decay.

You are correct. She will be the best choice and our Moda SriLankans will deserve what they get. Who better than the daughter of old communal Nari Banda and a stoic Bathalawathy who led the country into socialist misery and mile long bread queues. Lift up your sarongs menfolk and be prepared to banner around this rebranded wonder of a woman who is now badly missing her days of wanton glory. And while you rally round her don’t forget to chant Rip, Rip hooray while she rips the country again.

Despite certain failures during here two year tenure as President she was endevouring to bring about a balanced Govt. acceptable to all groups and also to strengthen democracy. All communities, including the Tamils although the war was still on, had the confidence and hope that CBK could bring about good future for all. She earned the support of many intellectuals, professionals and persons of good calibre to support her in her efforts. With her experience of her own success and failures during her leadership and with her balanced thinking she could be the best hope in the given circumstances.

Why not give Ranil Wickremasinghe an opportunity. After all he is a gentleman who will never hang on after defeat which was evidenced after he was defeated. When he won as a Prime Minister and was about to win the hearts of the people, it is Chandrika who dissolved the Parliament. Had he been allowed to proceed there would have been a read democracy in Sri Lanka. After that MR took revenge on Chandrika’s family and cheated the Tamils having paid the LTTE a huge sum. And after that there were conflicts within the Party and Military peronnels. MR was dancing to the tune of his brother and was also silent on the behaviour of his wife Shiranthi. Everyone knows how his son became an Attorney-at-Law – I have my doubt hoiw he will practice in Courts. Several institutions collapsed and now I understand banks have no funds to pay the pensioners overseas. Corruption & bankruptcy at the maximum. At least Ranil Wickremasinghe favour Federalism which is the reality. Of the devils, Ranil is the best. He is one who can be made reasonable as regarding the three races. Western countries will be happy to invest in Sri Lanka and there will be lot of opportunities for youths if Ranil is given an opportunity. Above all, Ranil is not communal.

    Dear readers of CT,

Can we discuss the qualifications and qualities of a person suitable to contest for Executive Presidency instead of arguing to select best among the worst?

    • 0
      1

not in SL presidential election , the ultimate goal must be to remove MR from power ! candidates qualifications , qualities , family back ground etc etc do matter , but those are secondary , only qualification must be whether he/she can defeat MR , nothing else !
