Is Sri Lanka Heading Towards Another July 83?

By Latheef Farook –

Is Sri Lanka heading towards another July 83 type pogrom? This is the growing fear in view of the repeated attacks on mosques and madarasas provoking Muslims. In the midst of this turbulence the Criminal Investigation Department’s, CID, call for list of mosques and madarasas sent  shockwaves among  beleaguered Muslims especially in the absence of  such calls on other worshipping centers.

Desecrating mosques is last thing a Muslim would tolerate. However, Muslims maintained remarkable restraint in the face of vandalism in Anuradhapura, Damdulla, Kurunegala and now inColomboand Dehiwala.

As we all know Muslims worldwide are sacrificing their lives to preserve their religious rights and dignity from the vicious global campaign unleashed jointly by the Zionist Jews , Evangelical Christians and India’s Rashtriya Swayamsevak  Sangh, RSS, under the guise of fighting a so called war on terrorism.

Under such circumstance, if these provocations continue some infuriated Muslims may inevitably respond and create a potentially dangerous situation with unpredictable consequences. Certainly any sensible person would realize thatSri Lankacannot afford such a disaster especially after the 30 year ethnic carnage.

Since the LTTE’s military defeat in May 2009, a sinister campaign demonizing Islam and Muslims has been underway poisoning the minds of the majority community.     Muslims suspect that ultra nationalists who managed to get into influential positions in the government, perhaps, backed by Israel which managed to sneak into the country, have been behind this campaign which has all the ingredients to tear apart the country. In fact hatred towards Muslims has been the only binding factor between ultra nationalists and the Zionist racists.

It all started with a website campaign involving eight Sinhalese language and ten English language sites, portraying the island’s Muslim community as a threat to Sinhalese, Buddhism and the country. They raised controversy over Daftar Jailani,  Kuragala, 15 miles off Balangoda, which they claim is a Buddhist holy place.

They also started publishing articles and books inciting Sinhalese against Muslims.  Hand in hand there began a campaign against cattle slaughter to rouse anti Muslim hysteria.

It is common knowledge that these elements who, openly demand that   Tamils leave for Tamilnad and Muslims go to Saudi Arabia, often said that “we will first deal with the Tamils and then take care of Muslims”. Now that the Tamils are weakened following the LTTE defeat, it appears they are turning their guns on the Muslims!

On 14 June 2011 mobs led by Buddhist monks attacked more than four centuries old shrine of Sheikh Sikkandar Waliullah atAnuradhapuraunder the watchful eyes of the police. Later mobs, led by a monk, tried to destroy the Dambulla mosque on Friday 20 April 2012, in violation of all laws of the country.

Since then it is almost a month and half the beleaguered Muslims await justice while the mob, encouraged by government’s inaction, entered a mosque off Bullers Roadin Colombo and threatened people there not to pray.A similar incident had taken place in a mosque in Ariyawatta, Kurunegala. Yet another mosque near the Dehiwala zoo was attacked on 25 May 2012 by a mob led by monks.

Widespread feeling among Muslims is that the Government’s failure to bring perpetrators to book, Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne’s order to shift the Dambulla mosque, decision taken by Sinhala government officials without Muslim participation to postpone a decision on the issue for six months and now the CID’s calls for list of mosques and madarasas indicate government’s patronage to mobs and its indifference towards the rights of Muslims.

Now comes the report that the government is preparing to present regulations to apply sanctions on individuals and entities associated with al Qaeda and Taliban. The question is where do one find individuals associated with Al Qaeda and Taliban in Sri  Lanka? Isn’t this the global Zionist agenda implemented by US and Europe?

The island is passing through one of its most difficult times in the independent history. There are numerous burning issues, both local and international, to be dealt with. The West in general has been   hostile towards Sri Lanka since the defeat of the Tamil Tigers in May 2009. Muslim countries on the other hand are the only friends of Sri Lankaas proved time and again and even during the final stage of the war against LTTE.

Muslim countries   remain sources of employment to almost a million Sri Lankans   besides having friendly relations with the island. Only a week ago Saudi government signed an agreement to set up a $ 40 million nurses training centre in the island. Under such circumstance why to antagonize the island’s Muslims and thereby antagonize the Muslim world? Do the mobs realize that we are not living in medieval stage isolation but in a globalised modern world as part of the world community?

After 30 years of ethnic killings this is the time to bring communities together to move the country ahead. Instead of concentrating on these issues ultra nationalists started putting forward  monks to lead attacks on mosques where one only finds Holy Quran and books on Islam. Don’t they realize that they are  bringing disrepute to their own community which they claim to protect?

Instead of attacking mosques why not they campaign against ever rising crime, corruption, lawlessness, rape, incents, murder, arson, liquor trade, casinos, prostitution, massage parlours and the like to clean up the society?

The unanswered questions are who are these vandals? From where did they emerge?  Who is financing their websites and all other expenses involved in gathering, transporting and feeding the mob to attack mosques?

However, mainstream Sinhalese community as a whole from politicians, journalists,  Buddhist monks and all others distanced themselves from this campaign.

Sri Lankawas a shining example for the entire third world, during independence in 1948, for its political, economic and social stability and ethnic unity with an enviable intellectual community known for its honesty and integrity. Where are we today? How did this happen?

Politicians from all shades of opinions, before and after independence, exploited racism to either retain or gain power. They flourished on promoting chauvinism. They created the ethnic war and flourished in it while innocent people sacrificed their precious lives.

Unfortunately for the country the majority community has failed to produce a national leader who could have brought communities together and move the country to turn this into “truly a paradise which it is”.

Isn’t it time the mainstream in the majority community reassess racist politics? This is the need of the time because Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and all others will continue to remain  as long as this island remains in this planet.

In large part the Muslim leadership and Rauf Hakkim in particular are to be blamed for the situation that minorities are facing since there has been a failure to take a principled stand on the Dambulla mosque issue and let the law take its course. Hakeem and the Muslim leaders have preferred to make devils bargains and back room deals with the fundamentally racist Rajapkse regime in order to keep their perks and ministerial positions. They will as a result lose legitimacy with their voters.
It is now time for ALL the minority MPs supporting Rajapkse and the leftists to walk out of the UPFA and join the joint opposition.

I agree that this is the most tactical way to reform Governance once and for all and look forward to statesmen type of political stand among
the Opposition leaders. This action will also benefit the Sinhala Voters in the long run.

    Latheef Farook –

You pretend as a baby. was your religion permitted to worship dead man.In Makka is there sant dead man’s remains? If not why you are claming anuradhapura,Koorogala, deposit places as your dead saints remains.
Do not think that sinhalees are folish. You are misleaded with the concessional behaviour of sinhalees as a weak point. Your human bomb will not work here as it worked in Afganistan,Indunisia, and Moldives.

Forgive me but when did the Lord Buddha become a person to be ‘worshipped’ (as is now the practice) & Buddhism a ‘religion’ rather a peaceful ‘way of life’? Have heard lots of talk but haven’t seen even the monks practicing peace or that way of life in a long time!!! Get to basics EVERYONE!

          Bro., Samarasekara,
If you’re so serious, lets sit and discuss about both parties beliefs. First and foremost, you should understand that “Lord Buddha” was just a human being, not a “GOD”. Neither he asked nor preached to be worshiped.
You’re an educated idiot and of course a fool!!!! Try to know your belief and then compare it with Islam …
May “Allah” show you the right path …
          Regard
          Mohd.

          Dear friend,

Although we are not believe it is true,we absolutly have no problem with your creator call ALLAIH.It is a concept as the god of cristian’s . We could simply distroy both concepts by asking WHO CREAT ALLAHAI OR GOD? But we don’t. Reason is by studying AGGANNA SUTHRA of lord Buddha’s we know how the univers and so on exist.Therfore we don’t want to buy your concepts about ALLAIH or GOD.

OUR PROBLEM IS ABOUT PROPERT MOHAMUD AND HIS HOLY CURAN.
The few muslim followers are partly understanding of curan and prophert Mahamud making whole problems. They namely GIHARD. Now I think you able to distinguish identifying ALLAIH and PROPERT MAHAMUD

Mr. Farook, I think the problem is with the extremists in any religion – those who teach & preach hate (eye for an eye’ & the exclusion of others). Christ taught peace, turning the other cheek & forgiving 490 times. I do beg to hear what you mean (factually) exactly by those you say are behind the ‘vicious’ campaign you mention in paragraph 3. Thank you

Why is the Rajapaksa government not shown any outrage like they would have done, if this was a Buddhist temple, and why have they not shown any concern by speaking out against such deplorable actions?

Why are the Muslim leaders not protesting such disgusting actions, and speaking up for the basic rights of their own people? Sri Lanka is a multi religion, multi cultural country, and the right to practice any religion in any place of worship has always been part of it.

There should be the strictest punishment for thugs, especially clergy, who act as rabble rousers, trouble makers, and who cause harm and damage to religious institutions and places of worship.

If things are not nipped in the bud, the present Buddhist leaders are only laying the groundwork for what might escalate into larger, ugly, dangerous, situations.

Rajapaksa should stay at home instead of hobnobbing with world leaders, and deal with these explosive situations. It would be wise for the government to find out who is instigating this, and get to the bottom of actions that will divide this country, further.

There will be NO Race Riots similar to the July 1983 riots sponsored and executed by the GOSL using Sinhala civilians.
I doubt the R brothers are that crazy!!!

So this scenario is highly exaggerated.

In case it happens, the Insurance Companies in Sri Lanka will go bankrupt, and especially the Govt. owned.
Secondly, the insurance rates of every body will double.

Tamil diaspora would support the Tamil speaking Muslims 100%.
There will be hell to pay from the Middle East and the rest of the Muslim world, as well as all the Tamil lobbyist who will canvass against such inhuman and cruel attacks on the Tamil speaking Muslim civilians.

There is no room for racial persecutions and the Catholic and Christian churches in Sri Lanka and international groups will join in.

It will be a sad day for Sri Lanka and GOSL, and the UNHRC, UN and US will come down heavily on the Rajapakses, as it would definitely confirm their “Insanity”.

The Sinhalese from the UNP, and the leftist also would be critical of the R brothers and the GOSL, as well as the Muslim MP’s in Parliament.

No, this type of insane conduct and incident will not take place against the Muslims and or the Tamils ever again. Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lanka has learnt a bitter lesson from July 1983. They have paid a heavy price.

No Latheef … It is not heading towards 1983 … Why?
Not like 1983, almost all police top positions are occupied by Sinhalese now … In 1983, they were all occupied by Tamils … Starting from IGP Rudra Rajasingham almost all next level (DIG’s) position were held by Tamils … I hope situation is different especially because Gota is holding Defence Sec. Whatever people say, a kind of situation like ’83 should be dealt with hard and fast without any harm to any civilian whatever their race might be ….

It is deeply saddening that two million Iraqis and countless Afghans have died due to the cruelty of the West (US/UK/EU), and their intolerance of anyone who dares to defy their hegemony (as Osama bin Laden presumably did on 9-11 at least symbolically). The indignance created by 9-11 resulted in the deaths of millions of people who had absolutely nothing to do with that event. Such is the nature of Israeli-backed Western belligerence and arrogance.

Yes, there definitely is a global campaign against Muslims, largely as they have been a cohesive group, tied by their common religious adherence. Divisions were engineered between Shia and Sunni (for example) to destabilise and wreak havoc in those oil-rich countries, where the bounty had always been a cheap source of oil-flow to the West.

Sri Lanka is not a major player in global or even regional power-plays, and hence the involvement of Israel in a big way should be discounted appropriately. That is not to say that Sri Lankans are a gullible lot, who will believe lies mouthed by influential people (including Buddhist monks) almost as a misguided token of their allegiance to Buddhism.

The goverment has a responsibility to protect its citizens, regardless of whether they voted for the opposition, or whether they are a minority, or whether there will be bad publicity in their major trading countries of the Mid East. Muslims would also do well to demonstrate some loyalty to the country of their birth, in preference to countries they have never been to, or have the remotest affinity with, except on the basis of a common religious belief.

Ya… you got it correct… we almost finished dealing with Tamils… now its time to deal with Muslims. So, don’t try to mess with sinhala people. This is our country, we do anything to protect this country.

Beware O Sinhalese! The Sri Lankan Muslims are not an isolated group unlike You.There over 2 billion Muslims in this world- more than You can ever counter and they will always stand by their muslim brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka .Don’t think that any atrocities against the muslims will go unnoticed.Do not antagonize the muslim world as retaliation from Muslim countries will effect you adversely.Remember that more than a million of your people are employed in Muslim countries and the income they get form an important part of your foreign exchange-an undeniable truth. Moreover after the defeat of the LTTE Muslim countries remained loyal and friendly while the west tried to isolate you.
