Is Unelected President Ranil A Vicious Hypocrite?

By Amrit Muttukumaru

Amrit Muttukumaru

Examples of the rank hypocrisy of Ranil Wickremesinghe after becoming unelected Executive President include:

1) In March 2022 while being the solitary MP from the UNP he led he “demanded to know when the government would be able to table in the House the recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) report on Sri Lanka.” (‘The Island’ 10 March 2022). Today as Executive President and Minister of Finance he is effectively REFUSING to table in parliament the “staff level agreement” the government has reached with the IMF. This very same Wickremesinghe stated at the All-Party Conference convened by then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in March 2022 – “Article 148 of the Constitution has vested control of public finances in Parliament; however, the Parliament has so far been ignored.” (‘Colombo Page’ 23 March 2022)

2) After the alleged undertaking given by then PM Wickremesinghe to the EU in 2017 to repeal the draconian PTA after which GSP+ was reinstated, not only has he reneged on this promise but more dastardly he signed a ‘Detention Order’ under the PTA to detain for 90 days three ‘Aragalaya’ protesters which include Wasantha Mudalige – Convener of Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF). Ref. “Sumanthiran reminds Ranil of an unkept promise” (‘Daily FT’ 26 August 2022).

3) Is it not shameful for Wickremesinghe to portray himself as upholding democratic values when he knows that his Presidency is unlawful since his ‘National List’ parliamentary membership is unconstitutional due to it being inimical to Article 99A? This is due to the alleged failure of the UNP General Secretary to submit his name to the Election Commission as its nominee on the ‘National List’ within the specified 7 days after then Chairman of the Election Commission – Mahinda Deshapriya had requested the General Secretary to do so. Even if this is ingnored, does not his Presidency lack legitimacy?

Is Ranil an ‘ICON’?

Despite Wickremesinghe arguably being the biggest hypocrite among politicians in this country since independence, the media empire of his maternal uncle Ranjit Wijewardene – the feared Czar of the print media in this country considers him an icon – “Ranil emerges as icon but tough challenges ahead (‘The Sunday Times’ 4 September 2022). The same ‘editorial’ page political column also states that the “staff level agreement” with the IMF is a “feather in the cap for President Wickremesinghe”.

This clearly does not tally with reality because the conditions include political stability at the center of which is political consensus which is a non-starter. The conditions also include a credible anti-corruption mechanism which is also a non-starter given that Wickremesinghe’s political survival  is dependent on the same people who have contributed to the country’s political/economic agony.

The temporary absence of queues for fuel and cooking gas is being marketed by Wickremesinghe’s acolytes as a huge achievement by him. Is this not a superficial reading of the ground reality? For example, does the weekly fuel quota meaningfully resolve the problem? Do not fisherfolk throughout the country continue to protest due to the high cost and shortage of kerosene? Is not the cost of life sustaining essentials prohibitive? Are there not plausible allegations of corruption in the purchase of fuel and cooking gas which have not been laid to rest? Is it not the fear syndrome that is keeping a lid on things? Whether temporary or not only time will tell.

It is fraught with danger for the governance of this country that hardly anyone recognizes that the real motive of Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL) to go out of its way to promote Wickremesinghe’s dismal political track record is to carve out a political future for WNL owner Wijewardene’s laid-back son Ruwan who was given out of turn appointment as UNP Deputy Leader by first cousin Wickremesinghe. This is all part of dynastic politics.

The country has paid a heavy price by not taking cognizance of the mischief wrought by the businessmen controlled media. In this instance the focus is on Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Dynastic Politics

Almost everything about Wickremesinghe’s political life relating to his purported democratic credentials, management skills and ability to obtain FDIs is for the most part a myth planted by businessmen owned media led by the country’s dominant newspaper company WNL with its stable of Sinhala and English language newspapers. WNL newspapers include the country’s ‘go to’ newspapers: ‘Lankadeepa’/ ’Sunday Lankadeepa’ (Sinhala) and ‘Daily Mirror’/ ‘Sunday Times’/’Daily FT’ (English).

On the dynastic project look no further than the Op-Ed article in vivid colour “Back To Senanaiksm And Save The Party”  in WNL owned ‘Daily Mirror’ (7 September 2020) directly promoting Ruwan. His mother Ranjani is a grand-daughter of the co-founder of the UNP and the country’s first Prime Minister DS Senanayake.

The next in line Upali Newspapers Limited (UNL) founded by Wijewardene’s late cousin Upali Wijewardene is now controlled by Upali’s widow Lakmani who is the daughter of Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s late brother Dr. Seevali Ratwatte. Both WNL Chairman Ranjit and UNL founder Upali are cousins of JR Jayewardene who brought his nephew Wickremesinghe into politics.

Fear of WNL

The fear of WNL is such that the appointment of Ruwan as Minister of Mass Media by cousin Ranil (then PM) did not draw even a whimper of protest from either the state or private media although he had access to information from competing media institutions.

Although Ruwan was State Minister of Defence during the entire period of the Yahapalana government, no one – not even the usually loquacious Cardinal has demanded accountability from Ruwan for his share of responsibility for the Easter Sunday carnage.

Are we expected to believe that Ruwan did not have knowledge of the attack even to the extent of Harin Fernando’s hospitalized father?

Are we also expected to believe that investigative journalists from his father’s media empire would not have tipped him off?

It is downright dangerous to give the media both state/private – a free pass to operate without ‘independent’ regulation. It is a myth that the privately owned media is superior to the state owned media.

The ‘self–regulation’ through the ‘Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka’ (PCCSL) is a FARCE. For example, WNL’s ‘Sunday Times’ Editor – Sinha Ratnatunga is also Deputy Chairman of the PCCSL. The implication is that you have to complain to Ratnatunga about Ratnatunga!

Shameful

How Ranil Wickremesinghe became the country’s Executive President is a case study of the socio-political and economic rot in this country.

Here is a person who led the UNP to electoral oblivion at the August 2020 parliamentary election and failing to win his own seat in the Colombo District which for long has been a UNP bastion being ensconced in the position of Executive President. The irony is that he is replacing a man forced to resign for good reason who less than three years ago obtained a whopping 6.9 Million votes. Is this not perverse?

Also shameful is that he is depending on Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s SLPP to fill the balance period of Gotabaya’s tenure.

Inadvertently WNL in the midst of its ‘doctored’ news to prop up its owner’s nephew has let the cat out of the bag by revealing the unconstitutionality of Wickremesinghe’s appointment as Prime Minister which automatically disqualifies him to be Executive President – “If ex-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had named him Prime Minister and later made him acting President, The journey there onwards to the highest office in the land has been through a path defined by the Constitution.” (emphasis mine) – ‘The Sunday Times’ 24 July 2022.

Despite almost the entire country knowing that Wickremesinghe is in effect a clone of the Rajapaksas or at the least a proxy to do their bidding, WNL had the nerve to have the ‘Editorial’  ‘The ”house” Rajapaksas built comes tumbling down’  (‘Daily Mirror’ of 21 July) after he won the  parliamentary vote for President with the overwhelming support of the Rajapaksa controlled SLPP.

Repression

The watershed island-wide ‘Aragalaya’ protest movement famously began its journey on 9 April 2022 from the vicinity of the presidential secretariat at Galle Face. The catalyst for the ‘Aragalaya’ was the 31 March mass protest close to the private residence of then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Mirihana. The clarion call for ‘system change’ commenced with the catchy slogan ‘Gota Go Home’ demanding the immediate resignation of Gotabaya, dismantling of Rajapaksa dynastic politics and the return of the allegedly stolen Billions. After the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister and Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President, hardly anyone in the country let alone the ‘Aragalaya’ would have bargained for a two in one nightmare resulting in the effective retention of the Rajapaksa clan together with the electorally discarded and wily Ranil Wickremesinghe as President.

Before even the ink had dried after Wickremesinghe was sworn in as Executive President on 21 July, the brute force of balaclava concealed armed security forces was unleashed under his watch in the dead of night on hapless unarmed ‘Aragalaya’ protesters. This was despite the earlier assurance given by protesters they will vacate the area a few hours after daybreak. It is the supreme irony that the reputation of then President Gotabaya for intolerance of dissent and use of violent methods has been surpassed by Wickremesinghe reputed to be a pacifist in relation to the response to the Aragalaya. Even when the protesters were storming the President’s House in the Fort on 9 July, Gotabaya surprisingly did not give the order to security forces to use violent methods. Wickremesinghe did so within 24 hours of being ‘elected’ by parliament! This by no means should be interpreted as going ‘soft’ on the terrible violence prone ‘administration’ of the Rajapaksas.

Conclusion

Why are we not hearing about Corruption and related issues such as Sri Lankan names in the ‘Panama Papers’/ ‘Pandora Papers’ and accountability for the egregious Bond Scams/ Easter Sunday carnage?

Is it not the fear of exposés by Ranjan Ramanayake that led to Wickremesinghe giving him only a conditional pardon which keeps him away from active politics?

Even SJB leader Sajith Premadasa seems to harbor fear of Ramanayake. If not, why has he reportedly said:

“We will not pressurise the government to grant Mr. Ramanayake his civic rights as he has got freedom after a long imprisonment. We actually thank the President and other Ministers who have been instrumental in getting Ranjan the presidential amnesty” (‘Daily Mirror’ 27 August 2022)

I urge the ‘Aragalaya’ and other activists for ‘system change’ to consider encouraging a new political formation under the leadership of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MA Sumanthiran PC, Dr. Charitha Herath, Nagananda Kodituwakku, Wasantha Mudalige, Hirunika Premachandra and other like-minded persons. I know this proposal has its shortcomings – but could anyone suggest anything better from what we have today?

My goodness, the great Muttu K rides again. His target is Wijeya newspapers, again!
Mr. MUTTU, is it because they printed this?

      Dear notohypocrisy,
      .
Yes, I note that Amrit Muttukumaru recklessly speaks his mind, and gets punished.
      .
I hadn’t begun wondering what sort of person he is until quite recently.
      .
The point is that everything that he says seems to be true. Even in that “Defamation Case”, the Courts haven’t been vicious. It looks as though all these people are the super-rich of Colombo (I have noted Amrit’s address), but I’m not going to be swayed by envy.
      .
Dear Amrit, I’ll have to read this article more carefully, but here’s my email address:

        Dear mr. Edirisinghe,
Thanks for response. I have read many articles of Mr. Muttukumaru. I find that he attacks many people, like Ranil the president, and Mr Ruwan wijewardena very severely, but he don’t attack the people who ruin this country namely the Rajapaksas. Also he doesn’t like when other commenter criticise him, like Mr. Codger for example. Mr Codger has proved many times that the bondscam was not as important, but Mr Amrut is still insisting. Why? Ì am a securities consultant, and can understand issue. About WNL, I think he is angry because they won’t print his articles. How can they do when he makes personal attack? They will be liable for damages!!!
Mr Amrit is loudly asking system change, but he is forgot that Mr Ranil tried to bring a new constitution in 2017! Why he doesn’t attack the Vven Mahanayaka hamuduros who opposed this? Is this not hypocrisy??
Also, see who he has recommend for leaders, viz Sarath Fonseka, Hirunika, wasantha Mudalige!!! He is really expecting these people to work together???
        Rubbish!!!

          Dear notohypocrisy,
          .
          I’m glad
          that you have responded.
          .
I have now read Amrit’s article. I have also been asking people who this Amrit is. Nor much learnt yet.
          .
Amrit has written many articles, and I must have read and commented on some of them. I suggest that you look at the responses by me, if any. What’s the point in my doing it? You will not be satisfied with what I say. The ball is in your court now.
          .
I asked you the simple question, “Who are you?” I find that Amrit himself has directed 16 questions at you; the very first is asking the same question as I have. Please provide us with a proper and verifiable response to that. Unfortunately, you are only one of many who is dodging that responsibility. It wouldn’t matter much
if the discussions were abstract, and the approach non-controversial.

Your primary complaint appears to be that Amrit hasn’t criticised the Rajapaksas enough. That’s difficult to prove, isn’t it? You can’t “prove” what doesn’t exist. However, may I suggest that you direct me to places here he has been “soft” on them?
          .
For the rest, well, I find his observations quite good, and with the discussion now building up, many issues are getting clarified. Eleven comments, so far. Amrit seems to have rebutted your your allegations quite effectively.
          .
Amrit has had the courage to name those who could form an interim administration; not an easy thing to do, since our task is to find them among politicians / activists who would appeal to the Sinhalese public. I’m OK with Amrit’s selection, but they must be replaced ASAP after a general election. I can already see the objections that perennial grumblers like you will come up with! We are in one hell of a mess, and I don’t want to reject every constructive suggestion.

A few observations of less importance:
          .
I’m not at all familiar with this field of Finance and “Securities”. I was hoping that you would prove to be a real professional, which is what you say you are, a “consultant” no less. I would expect you to be more conscientious with your spellings and punctuation. Although I draw your attention to them, let’s not get bogged down in such trivia.
          .
Also, there is nobody called “Mr Codger”. There is a very wise, intelligent, knowledgeable, witty and caring man who calls himself, “old codger” on this site. Or so I thought. I have been severely disappointed to find him now transformed in to a lackey of Ranil.
          .
Please come up with a more worthwhile critique of Amrit’s doings
          .

          Dear Non@
Thanks, no doubt about it, you have a valid point.

Let me tell you, I agree with Mr. Codger again and again. I wouldn’t call him a RW supporter, but he is moderate. His arguments are polarizing. He is among the few who count on the bigger picture.
          .
As someone who has commented on CT for so long, I will tell you more. There is a big divide in our society between the cultured and the “uncultured”. In October 2018, the Sirisena government prevailed in a 52-day long coup. By then this was more obvious. Newspapers of European Union countries and Indian newspapers clearly pointed out that innocent people have been caught by Rajaksha’s fascist ideology. As someone who has lived in Western countries for a while, I feel the same way. I align myself with newspaper makers in Europe. The Sri Lankan replied that the EU was going to investigate us again.

This is the greatest trick to keep our stupid emotional average people in the dark. Wimal Weerawansa was the top speaker of the Mahinda-fascist gang, … taking the message to vulnerable people all over the island (over 70%). Uncultured people abhor facts and do not resect norms. Long before the Rajapaksas spread lies and seized power, their crime and high corruption records were clear to all.

            To Non@
            Continuing.
Moreover, by 2015, the whole world had marginalized Sri Lanka because of the extremely corrupt scumbags that the Rajapaksas should have been in jail for a long time. They outnumber other fascist groups in the region.
It is the same in today’s context, as the report clearly shows that the whole world and the people are against them but Rajapakshes dont allow current president to do the job independently. Current president is more like the biggest ever prisoner becuase he was elected by criminals in the parliaments. Criminals were elected to the parliament by unculured pro-Racist sinhala voters.
            .
The world did not know this before, however, now the UK is becoming clear and all other powerful nations will soon follow it. I see that something needs to happen to isolate “Rajakshala” from Sri Lankan politics, it will certainly do the nation and the region better. People were abused by their so-called war achievements, but the truth was that they were not good at anything. The 2.5 year Mara-Gotha kingdom from November 2019 to July 2022 revealed it again.

The average Sri Lankan is dumber than he appears, if criminals (Rajapakshalas) go from church to church as heretics they imitate. Just think, how many people in Sri Lanka started pulling “Pirith strings” just because Rajapakse started? Rajapaksa is ruled by wizards and sorcerers.

that EU countries are going to invade us again….. Rajapakshe fear mongering propaganda…
That is the secret behind the deep decline of our beautiful motherland.

we should get together and stand against Rajapkshes and their henchmen is the need of the hours. We should put them all in jails… that will help to improve our psychology… and economy as well becasue the state wastes billions of their luxury life styles.

                Dear GAMBADAISKOLEMAHATHAYA,

If the divine forces are blind,
                .
If the people of this country are like MERCY cows
                .
If the opposition parties are not strong
                .
If the religious priests of Sri Lanka are silenced
                .
If all the above are mentioned and the people are not sufficiently empowered, the Rajapaksas can destroy this nation forever.
                .
Out of respect for you and the other good souls in CT, I would like to remind you again, please do not expose whereabouts of anyone on this or any other forum.
You guys don’t need to repeat, anymore, no one wants to reveal anyone’s # details on this or any other forums.
If this is not respected, I am ready to say goodbye to CT in the near future. None of you would miss me, but there are lot more among the poor people, that would not be without my assistance in SL and africa.
                :
If they kill me, some poor children will have to starve. Some students will mourn forever without my support. My friends and real good guys in Europe will miss my activeness in various projects.
                :
So please let me remind you guys again, be very careful…. The true nature of Rajapaksa and his henchmen is still not fully clear.

Despite me being born sinhalse, I am now ashamed to reveal that I am a sinhalaya.
Thank you and MAY all invisible powers behind human creature be blessed upon you.

                  .

                  .
Well, to be strictly accurate there were two instances; not worth discussing, but ask if you’d like me to explain, and I shall.
                  .
I see that you have made an observation to old codger below this; it says: “I am just about say good bye to CT”. I shall say more there. I’m taking that very seriously.

                    Dear Gambadaiskolemahaththaya,
                    .
I simply don’t understand the reasoning behind you hanging on the national ID etc. rather than the content of the comment????
If I may ask you directly who is interested in your or any other national ID?

It is beyond my understanding to go fater a profile beyond what he or she has to say on a particular subject.

I have been reading OC’s comments for such a long time and I don’t see any bias in him, taking Ranil’s side.He might be adding excuses for RW, going by his own thoughts, but it to be name as being sponsored by RANIL ? what clear-cut evidence you may have to do so ?

He and I argue that there was no bond scam but that Ranil was the victim, and he is the kind of man who doesn’t react the way many would expect.
That’s why we couldn’t believe our eyes yesterday that an ex-criminal was allowed to be the state minister, to take the oath though he was a convicted murderer earlier. Partiicular swearing made me think I can’t trust Ranil anymore, but what options does he have?
With animals in the middle, who is at the helm? I spoke yesterday to two of SA political experts , in my place (they are germans and french), who are from my neigoburhood.

                  LM,
It will be a tragedy if you leave CT because
of the habitual inquisitiveness of some. It is indeed a danger, because they seem to take pleasure in “revealing” what has been shared with them in trust.
Strangely, the very same people insist on impossible standards of honesty for others.
“None of you would miss me,”
                  No, we definitely would.

                    Dear old codger,
                    .
                    Disappointing!

                    .
Whom do you mean? “…. the habitual inquisitiveness of some“?
                    .
Coward! Who are the “some”? Me? Why don’t you say so?
                    .
I will be sad to see LM going away. I don’t wish it.
                    .
I’m glad to see that you’ve got your CT identity under control. You’ve changed your password, I guess. Don’t you now realise how important it is to get your identity under control? I’ll analyse the comment that the hacker inserted. Or was there a hacker? He says what you wanted to convey, but in poor English. Do you see what’s happened? Break a pot and glue it together, it’s still not back to pristine condition.
                    .
But tragedy? You have recently been using language loosely. The present tragedy is what Ranil Wickremasinghe is doing to the country.

                      SM,
As to your current crush, AmritM, you should should trawl through his writings to get an idea of the various targets he takes on, from HNB to Indrajit Coomaraswamy and his sister, the JKH directorate, Jayantha Dhanapala……
Strangely enough, I can’t find a word he has written about Gota’s handling of fertilizer or Muslim burials, but there are dozens of tirades on RW, WNL, and the “bond scam”.
                      Even through
your rose tinted glasses, should be able to see that this is no disinterested crusader for justice.

Dammit, oc, I cannot directly answer the comment by you which starts, “SM,
                      As to your current crush……………”
                      .
It’s all one-sided! Amrit hasn’t written to me yet. But then, he didn’t promise to.
                      .
                      Let me copy paste something.
                      .
“Btw, who is this wealthy man Amrit ?”
                      .
That’s a question posed by LM, whose crush is YOU.
                      .
He may not have written about fertilisers – and how even Muslims killed by the naughty COVID virus ought to contribute towards the fertility of the soil of Lanka. I take your word for it, that such writings don’t exist.
                      .
Please trawl for those other things, since you know the sea-bed better than any of us, and provide us the links.

You do have this gift for over-the-top hyperbole. Pardon me for asking, but what exactly is he doing that affects you in particular negatively? Just answer honestly: Do you or do you not get more get as much petrol/LPG/ electricity as you need? Do you or do you not stand in queues for days to get them? Now, don’t tell me the stuff is expensive. It wasn’t Ranil who devalued the rupee or banned fertilizer. There are those who claim that the relief is temporary, and complain loudly about what they EXPECT to happen.
Is the current situation better or worse than in March?

The moral thing to do is to dissolve Parliament (he has to wait for February next year to do that I know, but preparations must start now).
                      .
As for petrol, it isn’t possible to buy it any time of day. One has still to check on which of the four sheds in Bandarawela has petrol, at what time, and then go there when rumour has it that the stuff has arrived.
                      .
Whose country is this? It is mine.
                      .
I have to acknowledge that Ranil and you (and Amrit) have shares equal to mine. He is immoral not to recognise my Rights. All legal, of course!

You arebeing disingenuous, whe you say :”As for petrol, it isn’t possible to buy it any time of day.”
Three months ago, could you buy it AT ALL?
Do you expect everything to be freely available in a bankrupt country? What you must understand, even with your weak grasp of economics, is that the current situation is PARADISE compared to what could have been. So, stop complaining about things that don’t affect you or me. Get real, in other words.

                      1) What can one say to a person who COWARDLY spews VENOM at another person under cover of ANONYMITY?

                      2) You ACCUSE me of “various targets” you allege I “take on”!

                      3) I am well aware that my PUBLIC INTEREST undertakings over the years particularly ‘Naming & Shaming’ has infuriated wrongdoers in high places. I have done so with RESPONSIBILITY to which wrongdoers have no RATIONAL answer other than unleash MERCENARIES in different forms for different rewards. This will not deter me.

                      4) Since you have virulently questioned my MOTIVES let me inform you that I was RESPONSIBLE for bringing a UN ‘investigation’ team to Sri Lanka (26-27 April 2005) to PROBE whether Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) has the INTEGRITY TO AUDIT or provide any other services to the UN to ensure transparency and accountability in the utilization of the massive TSUNAMI donor funds WORLDWIDE.

                      5) The team comprised of Ms. Paula Saddler – Chief, Investigation Section of the Office of UNDP Administrator in New York and Mr. Louis Marano – Investigator, Investigations Division of Office of Internal Oversight Services in the Office of UN Secretary-General. They also had a ONE-ON-ONE meeting with me. The end result was a major COVER-UP. I have given a point-by- point REBUTTAL to their ‘Statement of Findings’.

                      old codger (continued)

                      6) Since you are FAWNINGLY DEFERENTIAL to your HERO Ranil Wickremesinghe’s UNCLE Ranjit Wijewardene, the OWNER of Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL), let me inform you that WNL’s ‘Daily Mirror’ FALSELY CLAIMED on 25 April 2003 that its almost full page article (with large colour picture) titled: “Operation Shock and Awe: LTTE Style” was ‘Courtesy’ of the ‘London Times’. Its relatively unnoticeable ‘Clarification’ which referred to a mere “inadvertence” was belatedly published on 14 February 2004 as a result of MY PERSISTENCE.

                      7) The readers to date are UNAWARE of the actual ‘SOURCE’ of this article. WNL owner Ranjit Wijewardene was the inaugural Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL) at this time.

                      8) The ‘NEW’ commentator ‘notohypocrisy’ as a SUBTERFUGE to ‘COVER-UP’ for WNL has needlessly/mischievously involved the ROTARY movement in Sri Lanka by giving the link:

                      https://www.pressreader.com/sri-lanka/sunday-times-sri-lanka/20151108/281586649478342

                      9) This is why I was COMPELLED to set the RECORD STRAIGHT by inter alia stating:

“I unequivocally DEBUNK the FICTION that I have defamed anyone let alone former RI President K.R. Ravindran. I unequivocally state that NO COURT has ever found me guilty of defaming anyone or guilty of ‘contempt of court’. “

                      old codger (continued)

                      10) On the other hand, the COURT has recently THROWN OUT Ravindran’s charge of ‘Contempt of Court’ against me! I CHALLENGE ‘notohypocrisy’ to REFUTE this. Why has the ‘Sunday Times’ not reported this?

                      11) The REFUSAL of my ‘RIGHT OF REPLY’ entitlement by the ‘Sunday Times’ must be viewed in the CONTEXT where Ravindran’s UNCLE Kumar Nadesan (mother’s brother) is the long-standing Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL). Sinha Ratnatunga the Editor of the ‘Sunday Times’ is PCCSL Deputy Chairman! Can ‘Conflict of Interest’ get any WORSE?

                      12) Rotary International (RI) is one of the RICHEST and LARGEST NGOs in the world. K.R. Ravindran is the only Sri Lankan to have been RI President.

                      13) For the record let me state that I consider MOST of our politicians since independence unprincipled, untruthful and unsavory. In this milieu of ‘unsavory’ politicians, I consider the ‘Rajapaksas’ the WORST. I NOW find it difficult to SEPARATE your HERO Ranil Wickremesinghe from the ‘Rajapaksas’! What is your STAND on this?

If LM is worried on that score he will complain; why do you keep attacking me on CT, especially when we exchange emails? We cannot talk because your ears are useless. You want to meet no one because you want to keep your dignity intact.
                  .
LM is quite open about the country that he’s in, so my linking to some German chocolates that he sent me reveals nothing new, except his goodness. “Persona” is not quite the word that you wanted, is it? “Identity” a more straightforward issue.
                  .
And you are good. Very good. Ever ready to exert yourself, make sacrifices, and run risks, for “causes” of all sorts, everywhere on this planet. You ask for nothing yourself. Total altruism.
                  .
There are two days more for us to submit comments. I’m trying to work out how to show that from a mind as developed and sophisticated as yours, can come contradictory demands.

We do NOT exchange emails. Some time ago you asked to be connected to me. Unwittingly, I agreed. But yr continual attempts to involve me in your private battles with yr school or whatever, drove me round the bend & I wanted no more of it.

But u keep cropping up & tho I had decided not to respond, I may have slipped occasionally. Please, please, PLEASE leave me off your mailing list!
And dont ever send me again a mile-long patchwork quilt of emails like you did today!

Yes! “Persona” was the wrong word. I’m having severe memory problems & it wasnt what I was looking for….something so much simpler, of course. But I dont need English lessons from you as I’m only a 1/2 S_W.

            Dear Leelagemalli,
            .
I find this almost disgustingly snobbish. The disjunction that worries me is not between “cultured” and “uncultured” but between:
            .
            honest and DISHONEST.
            .
And now you are using the “been to” kaduwa on all “Gambada” fellows like me! You’re not doing it consciously, and that what makes it difficult to set your thinking right.
            .
old codger is far too sophisticated to speak as foolishly as you do. I don’t rule out the possibility of my becoming pals with him again, but not on this subject. I’m convinced that I’m right – and oc has clearly some agendum which he will not easily give up.
            .
I will always be your friend; you’re such a dear sincere guy!

Most people assume that “Manel Fonseka” is a pseudonym. You’re happy with that, aren’t you?
          .
You take sly private pleasure in the fact that it is your real name. You try to have it both ways. You loved your late husband sincerely and dearly, but you don’t want the hoi polloi to know who he was. But all those who are mighty and powerful do know.
          .
See how you floored Velu and everybody else here,

with the Beowulf kaduwa! Amrit uses English pretty effectively, but I doubt his knowing much about Old English. As for other, perfectly intelligent people living today, Old English probably connotes even Tennyson! Anything with “thee” and “thou”.

Thanks. What is the tone of your comment? Concerned and motherly.
          .
Do I think it genuine? Yes, definitely.
          .
The botheration is that it stifles all frank discussion. Twenty-two million people are misled!
          .
The solution is simple; and the ball is in the court of the others. With “leelagemalli” (have you noticed how rarely I call him LM?) there’s no problem. I know him, and I recognise that he’s genuine.
          .
The problem is with “old codger”. I know that the nightmares that I’m currently having about him can’t all be true. But I now wonder whether “notohypocrisy”, “SinhalaMan” and the purportedly hacked comment (the one in substandard English, which you would have identified, but may be not be by some others) all come from “the same crafty brain.”

      Part 1
Why don’t we hear about corruption issues in Sri Lanka like the Panama Papers/Pandora Papers, Bond Magadi/Easter Sunday Massacre?
      ****
      – Investigating those big scams in many other countries takes a lot of time, that might be the reason. However, in this case, the patient should be admitted to the intensive care unit and operated immediately. Moreover, the so-called bond scam under good governance should also be discussed further to clear the doubts….we know very well that it is based on the misdeeds introduced by MARA and Cabral who subverts his indiscretions. No doubt about it.
      .
Was it not because of the fear of Ranjan Ramanayake’s exposure that Mr. Wickramasinghe was kept away from active politics and only given a conditional pardon?
      *****
Arguing about RR’s issues should stop.

Why not talk about RR’s revelations, because Ranjan is a victim of baseless rumor mongering. I saw a video revealing the sufferings he went through

      *****
….. because the son of Medamulana Bally ordered that the punishment given to him should be given in several volumes. If Namal Baby and Mahinda were jailed for life, our anger would have been moderated to certain levels.

Even SJB leader Sajith Premadasa seems to be in awe of Ramanayake. If not, he is reported to have said why.#

        Part 2

As mentioned above, better to shut up about dear RR and related stuff. Don’t forget that the Sri Lankan judiciary is not independent at all as I see it now. That is the biggest lie to tell, we have our own legal system to protect our nation. The Supreme Court is silent about the repeated injustices in this country
–
******
Since Mr. Ramanayake, who was imprisoned for a long time, has been released, we will not pressure the government to give him his civic rights. We are truly thankful to the President and the Ministers who were instrumental in getting Ranjan a presidential pardon” (‘Daily Mirror’ August 27, 2022)- No doubt he will get the full amount he is entitled to soon.
–
*****
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, President’s Advocate Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President’s Advocate MA Sumanthiran, Dr. Charita Herath, Nagananda Kodithuvakku, Wasantha Mudalige, Hirunika encouraged the creation of a new political structure for ‘system change’ including ‘system change’. . I urge you to consider doing so. . ‘. I request the activists. Like-minded people including Premachandra. I know this proposal has its flaws – but can we propose something better than what we have today?
–
****+
This would be ideal, however, SF would also, as far as I know, turn tail if he could get revenge on his old enemies. This country will not be brought to the PRE-MARA situation where there was no large-scale corruption.

        Mr Muttu Kumaru,
I ďont think ìt is important, my identity. What it matters is if what I say is true. What I am saying is, you mercilessly attacking Mr. RANIIL and his family for so many years, but you are not saying anything about the Rajapakshes. Why? Are you afraid of them?
You are talking much about WNL, but you are saying nothing about Sirasa, which TV ìnvented this fake bondscam, which youare still using to attack Ranil. I am suspecting many people have personal motive, but hiding behind a saint face.
A wise man said “there is not smoke without fire”! So, I think in the Rotary club case, there is something, even though you deny much.
You must excuse myenglish. I am not rich as you Mr Muttu, living in Kurunduwatta. Therefore I don’t have expensive computer to make arguments in big words as you. Also I have no money to pay lawyers ,like you, so my IDENTITY not your business please.

        AM,
        were you born yesterday ?
        .
Not only the print media but also the main media TV channels are very corrupt. Sirasa alone is against Ranil Wickremesinghe and the former government. Remember? Do you remember how Cabral who started Badumkara Magadiya no second to greek bonds transactions, and emptied the tresary ? Chogem conference was carried out like extravaganza with some european leaders thought, SRILANKA has got funds…… remember ?

They sowed all that good for the survival of Rajapaksa. Today they also behave like saints. It is none other than the drug menace that destroyed this country, but the country’s media mafia.
Today many people do not follow print media but television news has become the main source of news for people. If TV news is false like Derana TV, people will become eternal fools in the eternal slavery of middle class rascals.
At the same time these TV channels promoted sorcery, sorcery, sorcery, astrology for their survival. The other thing is that they have empowered some sections of the Sinhala Buddhist clergy. As Mahinda thought, were they given luxury vans and vehicles as privileges from their parents’ property and income?

        AM,
        .
Including “mawbima” and other newspapers. The Daily Mirror is all biased. They can bring the news without subjecting it to any kind of corroborative nature. Who established this culture?

The apathy, indifference and apathy of the people made them the heroes of the nation. As yet, people would not stand against the murderers. I wonder, why dont people stand against Namal Baby public speech on a new FRONT ?
        – The poor were abused and misled by demons for their hidden agendas.

Also, the people of Western Province, where literacy is highest, did not stand up against Wimal Weerawansa. Even today, Wimal Buruwanse could use the same abusive and misleading rhetorics as had been before. So where is the failure then ? Is it not the people that need to change their attitude 100% ?

That’s how people let rascals breed like mites. If there was no ” aragalaya-struggle”, nothing would have been achieved as of today. So, entire nation is eternally indebted, the achievements of ARGALAYA youth.
        .
On that very boxing day, 9th of May, Mahinda Rajapaksa HIMSELF held a speech showing his interest to continue his prime ministership.

None other than the beast of the race called Mahinda should be interviewed by MAIN STREAM media TV channels and cross question what the malicious man would answer today.
Our people stood as if their faculties were completely disabled.
Their level of corruption and biased nature is beyond estimation.
people do not budge an inch against those institutions. That is beyond my bearing.

This is not new, even you behave as if you were born yesterday. When Rajakasha came to power, nothing was unclear about the level of corruption of Rajapkshe mechanisms.
If not for the Rajapaksas, who is to be blamed?
Think for a moment, the media of Sri Lanka is silent about the request of thieved Gotabaya who were rejected by many countries and returned to this country?

      Notohypocrisy (continued)

      6) We have it on the AUTHORITY of late Mangala Samaraweera himself while being FINANCE MINISTER under which fell the Sri Lanka Customs that Sri Lanka’s TOP DEALERS in illicit drugs are not those languishing in jail but some of those holding high posts in social service organizations such as some Presidents of Lions Clubs , Rotary Clubs and Buddhist organisations.

      7) Samaraweera stridently made this allegation at a press conference claiming “PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE”. His back-pedaling few days later: “Inadvertently, I also mentioned Rotarians and Lions Clubs, which I deeply regret.” does not hold up.

      8) Readers can LISTEN to his words in the link given below and decide for themselves whether there is any likelihood of any “inadvertence”? (3:27 onwards)

      https://youtu.be/5EYkM_tJYI0

      9) After I raised issues concerning the INTEGRITY of Rotary, questioned the LEGITIMACY of K.R. Ravindran’s nomination to be RI President, he SUED me for Rs. 100 Million for alleged ‘defamation’.

      10) Ravindran subsequently INITIATED a ‘SETTLEMENT’ on IDENTICAL undertakings which PROHIBITS BOTH Ravindran and me from writing on any issue concerning each other. Does this not demonstrate the utter FALSITY of the alleged ‘defamation’?

        Dear Amrit,
        .
        I’m Panini Edirisinhe, “Sinhala_Man”.

        .
        Where to place this comment?
        .
“SinhalaMan” probably is a Sinhalese, and it may well be that he’s a Man. How does one perform a sex test on the Internet?
        .
Which reminds me of what happened after my younger daughter got married on the 30th May 2009. First St. Mary’s Church, Colombo 4, then the Galle Face Hotel. She had collected money for about 2 years for her big day. She was an HSBC Bank Manager at the time.
        .
Lo, and behold, two weeks later, two policemen arrived. It had been reported that a gay wedding had taken place during the month of May at the Galle Face Hotel, and I was down as the bride’s father, who’d paid the bill. Was this that wedding?
        .
I said that my daughter was definitely born a girl, and I remember her growing up. And she married this tall guy (unfair to reveal other names!). I had never checked his sex!
        .
It wouldn’t be problem today, would it? The law has been changed, or are they still talking about changing it?
        .
        Anyway, check gravatars!

      11) I now refer to the link you have given to the MISCHIEVOUS ‘News’ item in the ‘Sunday Times’ of 8 November 2015 captioned: “Colombo resident apologises to Rotary International President, pays Rs. 10,000 to charity”. Let alone its contents, even its caption FALSELY suggests I have DEFAMED Ravindran.

      12) Although the issue at hand is the ‘Settlement’ of an alleged ‘Contempt of Court’ for the alleged breach of a “previous decree”, the ‘Sunday Times’ mischievously referred to a “defamation action” which has NO MENTION either in the ‘Settlement’ or the “previous decree”.

      13) The ‘Sunday Times’ has not stopped at this. By insinuating that the “previous decree” only applies to me, it has given the impression to readers that I have ‘DEFAMED’ K.R. Ravindran. If the intention was FAIR and objective reporting, should it not have stated that the “previous decree” applies EQUALLY to Ravindran and me and prohibits BOTH parties from writing on issues concerning each other?

      14) My expression of regret and payment to the ‘Sri Lanka Cancer Society’ was with SOLE reference to the alleged ‘Contempt of Court’. It has NOTHING to do with any NON-EXISTENT ‘defamation’. It was NOT A FINE by Court.

        Mr. MUTTU KUMARU,
I am sure you are a good man! But I am thinking you are talking too much about Yr personal affair, and not enough about Rajapaksa, Cabral, and other who ruined the country?
It is not Mr Ranil W who did it, isn’t it???

        • 12
          4

There are stark differences between Ranil and Mahinda. Mahinda uses his mouth in public like Wimal Weerawansa- filthy sinhala langauge as no others done sofar.. Ranil has never reacted like that. However, people in this country love “stinky filthy langauge ” more than decent nature.
          .
One from Walawwa background, the other from a cave (Medamulana). So that reveals a lot to our sleepy readership, doesn’t it?
          :
Both of them may not be good politicians to the country, most of them are stupid people but Ranil will never hurt opponents like Mahinda.

Arjuna Mahendran’s appointment to CB may be wrong for Ranil. But Mahinda looted the state like no other leader in South Asia.
And Mahinda is ignorant and dangerous. Today #s mess is due to Mahinda. He has no right to be out of a prison cell for his rest of life.

All this is obvious to most of us, but people in this country don’t call a spade a sapde as yet. They are scared of Medamulana murderers.
          .
That is why even if any simple Simon hits Ranil, but they would not utter a single word, even if Mahinda and his criminals would rape and murder on broad day light.
This is srilanka where the people are made to be Rajapakshe HUMAN SHIELDS.

            .
            And it begins like this:
            .
“Before the Lion King arrived here there was Ravana …………..”
            .
I’ve just noticed that there were two “Native Vedda”s as well. Different gravatars.
            .
The system then was different. Correct me if any mistake creeps in.
            .
The system of Registering, and then logging in had not been created. A commenter was asked to provide a user name, and a valid email address that wouldn’t be revealed. The gravatar depended on the email address. Note that at that time I was commenting using two different names, and two email addresses, so that my gravatars were quite different. As “Sinhala_Man” I had the gravatar that is now assigned to me.

            PART TWO
            .
The present system is far more secure.
The email address that I now use for CT comments is not what I have given above for Amrit to contact me. He hasn’t done so yet, although another (very nice) person has used it.
            .
The email address that is used by me for CT is not revealed even by me to anybody. Only the CT site knows it. It is impossible to guess. And then, there is the password.
            .
I’m open about everything else, but the wisdom of keeping those log-in details secret is to be seen in how I haven’t really been hacked, although it looks as though that has happened to “old codger”. The signs that he has been hacked, I shall explain as a response to his complaint.

Sri Lanka’s Rajapakse biased media mafia.

Gotabaya, who returned 6.9 million stupid voters to power, created hell for everyone, including his stupid decisions as a head of state.

He returned to the country, or a week ago, but the Sri Lankan press is silent about him. Who is behind it? Why on earth is the Sri Lankan press behaving so rudely against one of Bally’s sons?
      .
No institution inside or outside can write or publish anything more about a president who destroyed a country who behaved like a brave but stupid animal and took refuge in one country above all.

The final blow. As I often say, “Honey Badger” is an intelligent mammall but in wildlife.
      :
Gota’s bravery was highlighted by the Sri Lankan media at their request. Now the nakedness of the very same media is coming to light. SRILANKA and SRILANKA media are both mlechcha by every means.
Gota’s wiyath balumaga is silent about Gota’s request. Millions of dollars were wasted alone during 2.5 years time he ruined this country as a president who failed to settle even kitchen gas cylinder issue peacefully.
      :
Why on earth, if the media is as independent as they claim to be, WHY THEY demeanour like defeated dogs, that make every effort to hide their tail behind the rear legs ?

            1) Your TRUTHFUL and kind comments are appreciated. Also appreciated is that you have DISCLOSED your IDENTITY together with your ID number.

            2) I consider MOST of our politicians since independence unprincipled, untruthful and unsavory. In this milieu of ‘unsavory’ politicians, I consider the ‘Rajapaksas’ the WORST. Your ‘feeling’ is spot on. I NOW find it difficult to SEPARATE Ranil Wickremesinghe from the ‘Rajapaksas’!

            3) The ‘NEW’ commentator ‘notohypocrisy’ as a SUBTERFUGE to ‘cover-up’ for Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL) has needlessly/mischievously involved the ROTARY movement in Sri Lanka by giving the link:

            https://www.pressreader.com/sri-lanka/sunday-times-sri-lanka/20151108/281586649478342

            4) This is why I was COMPELLED to set the RECORD STRAIGHT by inter alia stating:

“I unequivocally DEBUNK the FICTION that I have defamed anyone let alone former RI President K.R. Ravindran. I unequivocally state that NO COURT has ever found me guilty of defaming anyone or guilty of ‘contempt of court’. “

              AM,
“In this milieu of ‘unsavory’ politicians, I consider the ‘Rajapaksas’ the WORST.”
In that case, you ought to have written several magnum opuses on them. Ccorrect me if I’m wrong, you haven’t, but you keep up your tirades on “vicious” RW and his family. Can you produce even a comment by AM on Mihin Air, Srilankan, Greek Bonds, Oil Hedging, etc? Very curious.

              • 2
                6

Oh dear, what an expected tirade Mr. AM has unleashed on me above! Still, no real response to why he keeps hammering away at RW when he admits himself that the Rajapaksas are worse. The statistics show only a couple or so articles on the Rajapaksas but a thumping 65 or so on Ranil and the “bond scam”. In NONE of them could I find any evidence presented of how much was “scammed”, except for the liberal use of the term “egregious”.
I am not fawning on anyone. I ask only for solid evidence, not quotes from third parties. I have produced what I think is convincing evidence that this “bondscam” was nowhere as “egregious ” as you claim. If you have proper figures, kindly produce them, otherwise hold your peace.

            5) This is also why I stated:

Sinha Ratnatunga the Editor of the ‘Sunday Times’ is PCCSL Deputy Chairman! Can ‘Conflict of Interest’ get any WORSE?”

            6) Rotary International (RI) is one of the RICHEST and LARGEST NGOs in the world. K.R. Ravindran is the only Sri Lankan to have been RI President.

            7) I am well aware that my public interest undertakings over the years particularly ‘Naming & Shaming’ has infuriated wrongdoers in high places. I have done so with RESPONSIBILITY to which wrongdoers have no RATIONAL answer other than unleash MERCENARIES in different forms for different rewards. This will not deter me.

The entire country is being destroyed in various ways because no culture, pride or dignity is preserved. It is similar to a FATAL patient just entered the intensive care unit.

People are desperate. current Geneva stories say that cross-examinations were heard from those who went to represent the country about this dangerous situation.

According to them, they have to be faceless. Eventhough, Namal baby is again publicly asserting, that they will have to build up a new front under the guide of Mahinda Rajapkshe the thirisana of the nation.

          “SM,
It seems that you and I have both been hacked!”

          1) Have any of you been ‘hacked’ PREVIOUSLY in CT?

          2) Is there a NEW commentator this time around? If so, what is his/her main FOCUS?

          3) ”15) The REFUSAL of my ‘RIGHT OF REPLY’ entitlement by the ‘Sunday Times’ must be viewed in the CONTEXT where Ravindran’s UNCLE Kumar Nadesan (mother’s brother) is the long-standing Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL). Sinha Ratnatunga the Editor of the ‘Sunday Times’ is PCCSL Deputy Chairman! Can ‘Conflict of Interest’ get any WORSE?”

          4) Are not Wijeya Newspapers Limited (WNL) and ROTARY in Sri Lanka a ‘heady’ mix?

If it is any consolation, you have an asset that is hard to hack– a sense of humor.

“a new political formation under the leadership of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake,………… //

The author of the article must be out of his mind or suffers from memory to suggest the inclusion of Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka in a new political formation. Sarath Fonseka must take responsibility for the senseless and brutal execution of hundreds of LTTE surrenders around May 18, 2009. Hundreds of White flag surrenders led by P. Nadesan of LTTE Peace Secretariat were tortured and then shot dead by the soldiers attached to Army’s 58th division. This division was under the charge of the then Army commander Shavendra Silva who is now accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.

On the same day, about 50 second-ranked LTTE cadres surrendered to the same Army division, some with their families, at Vadduvaakal. They were taken for a short meeting in CTB buses with the promise they will be released soon. They were all shot dead, some say they were crushed using cement-mixing machines.
