ISIS Easter Attack: Going Beyond Condemnation

By S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole

Prof. S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole

Day before yesterday was Easter Sunday. Two hundred and twenty seven persons have been killed, and many times more injured. The primary targets were churches and international hotels.

It seems clear that the extremist group ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) has masterminded the attacks. Of some 35 persons arrested so far, all are Muslims save a Tamil driver. Jaffna-based reporters working on the story say some have been trained in the UK. Five are Pakistanis. One captured in Jaffna yesterday had a Pakistani flag tattoo on his body – it is said that the bomb he was to expode did not go off.  As I write (4:30 pm 22 April, 2019), there has been another bomb in Kotahena – apparently it was set for yesterday in a car, and when it did not go off they had tried to remove it and it exploded during that process.

M.A. Sumanthiran, MP, is quoted in today’s Uthayan newspaper as saying on the authority of the Inspector General of Police that it is ISIS that was behind the attacks. The evidence we have seen so far supports that position.

Predictably there are many statements of condemnation of the murders. And rightly so. I join that condemnation without hesitation. I am, however, writing to highlight another important perspective that we must see. Larger, collective relations with Muslims have been difficult for Tamils and Sinhalese. It is partly because Muslims have been successful in many areas of work. In Jaffna last year a function to commemorate the expulsion of Muslims from the Northern Province and to express solidarity with Muslims as they try to recreate life with us, was attended only by a few Tamils, all Christians besides a handful of Marxists. When I asked friends about standing shoulder to shoulder with Muslims who lost much through their expulsion, the retort was “What of the things they did to us in the East?” Mr. Sumanthiran who has publicly apologized for the expulsion, continues to take heat for that apology and solidarity.

Yet, advances in Muslim-Tamil relations have been made, albeit slowly. Many Muslims are increasingly making Jaffna their home again to make Jaffna the beautiful cosmopolitan city that it once was.

And now this! Already there are unconfirmed reports of a mosque in Puttalam being bombed. As a Tamil, I remember that every time the LTTE attacked Sinhalese civilians or even the army, we were subject to intimidation, assault, and even murder as if we were responsible.

In June of 1987 I was going by train from Colombo to Jaffna to escort back to the US my wife and two children who had gone on vacation in December 1986 and got stuck because of fighting. I was desperate because 4 June was my eldest girl’s birthday. Train service was sporadic and I got into a train on 5 June.  I had to alight in Vavuniya and take a bus because the train service ended there. It was about 1pm now and a curfew would be on from 6 pm. We had 5 hours to get home.

It was, unfortunately for us passengers, the day new troops were sent from Vavuniya to Mankulam further North, and the replaced were marching back. We were held hostage and told in harsh words that if the returning troops were attacked by the LTTE, we would all be mowed down.

This is what I fear – the sins of a few members of a community being placed on the heads of the whole community. To truncate the story’s happy ending, the troops came back by 4 pm and our bus was released, and dared the curfew, getting us home by 8 pm. I learnt that my absence on June 4 was compensated by the few packets of dhal and rice air-dropped by India into our home.

The point I make is this. I am a Tamil, and like most Tamils, was never responsible for the murder of President R. Premadasa or of any others who were assassinated by the LTTE, although I was very critical of the politics of such Sinhalese politicians. Likewise, most Sinhalese are not responsible for the 1983 riots and the atrocities perpetrated on Tamils since and before, even if many Sinhalese thought Tamils had no business living in Colombo after voting for federalism

However, if I am blamed for President Premadasa’s death and murdered for it as a Tamil, or if I advanced the execution of an innocent, disconnected Sinhalese, seeking vengeance for the 1983 riots – that would be murder, even terrorism.

The time calls for more than condemnation of the Easter Day bombings. It also calls for the protection of the innocent, whose only connection to the killers is a shared ethnicity.

    Dear Prof Hole,

We know you are a good person and it is sad to hear that you were held hostage by the Army. I do not agree with that.

But most Tamils unlike you cannot say that they had nothing to do with the violence perpetrated by the LTTE. If any Tamil contributed to the LTTE even by a dollar, a rupee or a sterling pound then they have bloodied hands.

We know most Tamils in the West have contributed to the LTTE to buy arms and ammunition that were used to kill Sinhalese women and children. They should not be crying a single tear. They are perpetrators themselves.

You say, Right now you here a bomb blast is being planned or occurring. Who told you. Which Almighty. Is it Christian or Muslim or are you implying something else. ANYWAY, ONCE CAN NOT YOU COMMENT DID THAT PUTTALAMA BOMB BLAST HAPPEN. hOW MANY KILLED. I can not understand. Sumanthiran is not Tamil. He is Living in colombo too. Ranil also informed the Sumanthiran the bolb blast. Why did Ranil do that. My knowledge is ISIS is mostly poor Arabic Sunnis who were trained to attack Hamas like Shiite Muslims and a lot ofISIS soldiers were european muslims including youth. Are you advertising for Sumanthiran ?
I THINK SRILANKAN POLICE WAS VERY GOOD. By morning they found almost everything. I have heard even earlier, they have the capacity to things like that only thing is their MORALE is very LOW because Srilankan police force is highly demoralized because of politics and sri lankan establishment. Anyway, I can not imagine an educated person had written this article. Either the govt or police who ever reacted very fast. they stopped Trains, busses, airports found most of it by next day Morning (At least in over seas times) and that is very congratulatory. Srilankan police did not shoot a minority member who is running to the train on the head. three of them gave their lives. that is unfortunate.
I felt Ranil Could score too. He was saying “I told” that and this and Sumanthiran too. but, I can not remember saying he told the PResident too who was Away I suppose.

Dr, Hoole, Fact is that there is absolutely NO MOTIVE and NO HISTORY of and for local Muslims attacking Christians in Sri Lanka as they are both MINORITY COMMUNITIES. This narrative of Christian-Muslim conflict, which is a Euro American narrative will not fly in Sri Lanka and no self respecting Lanka social or political analyst will accept it!
The Easter Sunday attacks were highly sophisticated logistics and externally planned very likely CIA using some local Muslims as pawns to destabilize Sri Lanka, hit China in Shangri La, and get a US security stranglehold and perhaps military base in Trincomalee and and LNG and oil plant in Hambantota Sri Lanka in the midst of the chaos in the months to come..
The FBI is even now crafting the ISIS anti-Muslim narrative albeit with little success.
THE FACT IS that there is absolutely NO MOTIVE and NO HISTORY of local Muslims attacking Christians in Sri Lanka as they are both MINORITY COMMUNITIES. The New Zealand attacks story just not make sense, given the highly sophisticated and coordinated logistics operation and the Economic Targets involved.
Now the FBI and all the King’s horses and all the kings men are trying to craft a narrative after getting the plot line wrong. This is were LOCAL CONTEXT becomes so important and defeats the global plot.
    The attack on Churches on Easter Sunday was meant to cause maximum confusion, and a spiral of violence to destabiize Sri Lanka and enable pushing the US MCC agenda in Lanka as the days of Trumpland puppet Bondscam Ranil are numbered — with elections on the horizon;
Sri Lanka needs to know and identify the US deep state and its Cold War against China in the Indian Ocean as the culprit and motive — if it is to recover and prevent further attacks.

I heard CNN was quick to say that it way by ISIS. I wonder how they found it. Some other places say some new Sri lankan group of Muslim called National or Sri lankan THOWHEETH JAMAATH. The Shangri La Hotel Suicide Bomber had been a Factory owner in Avissawella and the name is INSAN SEELAVAN, probably a State Tamil-muslim.

Under the guise of combating ISIS and protecting Christians, a foreign military base with all necessary logistics supply lines to be set up in Sri Lanka?
A Clash of Civilizations in an insignificant island
Perhaps the endgame of the Easter Sunday attacks –
the dead, injured and grieving –
collateral damage in a high stakes great game in the Indian Ocean…

Dr.Ratnajeevan Hoole has articulated in this article an important and timely message. His plea is : Do not blame the entire community for the dastardly acts of a
microscopic minority of misguided individuals of that community. At a time when the whole country is engulfed with emotional upsurge, sober analysis of the horrendous episode by Dr.Hoole , as well as his message should be appreciated.

    Dr Hoole,
    Thanks for your article.
    :
just to share you, I dont think that whole lot of sinhalese would blame you for President Premadasa’s death and murder. The manner he played his politics, he would have killed by anyone. Rpremadasa was no better to Mahinda Rajapakshe. Recalling my past in the country, towards the end of 1989, many sinhalese stood against premadasa politics. His gamudawa was just a show to abuse rural sinhalese. :
    :
I am sinhalaya but I would not abuse my mouth to attack all muslims for easter day bombings.
And I also know there are tamils and muslims that would only think that we the sinhalese all the same. Sinhalese only discriminate the minorities in the country etc. That is unfortunately the culture in our motherland.

Thanks for the write up and information about those who are behind it. It had al the tell-tale signs of ISIS.
Why should an innocent belonging to an ethnicity or religion be targeted because of a criminal or terrorism by one of its members or groups of its members? This is Tribalism. Therefore, Sri Lanka is still a Tribal Society, or a society developing trying to get away from Tribalism.
Why do the media keep calling the group Islamic State? Do they follow the constitution of the Islamic State? Based on their actions and ideology, they seem to follow the constitution of the Devil, Satan, Iblis. Do, you should call them Iblisic State. The Arabs call them Daesh.
Nov 22, 2017 · ISIS ‘threatens to cut out the tongues’ of anyone using this word. Daesh is an acronym for the Arabic phrase al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). Essentially, it’s another word for ISIS – but apparently it’s one that ISIS militants do not favour.

Yes Why should the innocents pay? It is the responsibility of the state to protect the innocent, apprehend and punish the guilty. In Sri Lanka, the performance of the state is very marginal

    Who are the killers?

IS hand in Lanka blasts? Pics of 3 suicide ..

Why Sri Lanka? What is the motive? Indonesia and Philippines makes sense. There was much friction between the two religions.
    ..
Eye for an eye don’t apply to us. There must be an economic motive. China is at large in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
    ..
You can assume they are well placed to create a terrorist attack through funding.
    ..
Why don’t Imran Khan accept there are terrorists at large in Pakistan? They’re vital for their security, and China banks on the same for their success.
    ..
Who support China in Sri Lanka? And why?

“even if many Sinhalese thought Tamils had no business living in Colombo after voting for federalism.” Yes Dr. Hoole you can’t blame the simple minded Sinhalese for not being able maintain such a logical contradiction.
Tamils (all Tamil speaking people irrespective of their religion caste or the date of arrival scattered across the island) must give up their separatist sentiments and continue to maintain their right to live anywhere.A federal structure will reduce +50% Tamils living outside NE to second class citizens. Tamil racist nuts on CT (WITHOUT EXCEPTION) are so daringly aggressive as to demand both ( a separate Homeland as well as the right to live anywhere) and so shamefully hypocritical while accusing the Sinhalese of extremely discriminatory even genocidal. Tamil racists must unfailingly understand that separatist demands and the right to live anywhere are MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. Once again I beg my Tamil brothers and sisters to choose the option of right to live anywhere.

People are anxious; people are in tension. Is this the appropriate time to weigh in on this subject? Our past is a very complex equation. We have a balancing act to perform. Our present is no less complex. Can we wait to make an assessment on this very sensitive topic.
    .
It is not a case of who is bold enough to take up the subject now; it is a case of who is wise enough to wait for a more propitious moment to take it up.

Every cloud has a silver lining and the lining is that the Western Media has spun this as another barbaric attack on the West. If the Muslims had attacked Buddhist temples – this would have been another story. This tragic incident is seen as reprisal for the Christchurch mosque attack. The white man is fed up with Muslims in their nations and the far right is using this as another reason to get rid off them.
Sri Lanka , a country unknown to billions of People is on the front page of every Newspaper today. The PR from this is tremendous. No country except Japan issued a travel advisory. Meaning Tourist arrivals will continue and grow. The Media has portrayed this as ” well no country is safe from these barbaric Muslims , you could get killed in your hometown by them .”
The Eiffel tower dimmed its lights in a memorial, The Town Hall in Tel Aviv , the second most populous city in Israel, lit up with a Sri Lankn Flag, At the Bernabéu , stadium 110,000 people stood in silence along with Real Madrid , the most famous football team in the world, Infowars, breitbart,, Aryan Nation ( Trump supporters ) have all given coverage of the incident, Barak Obama tweeted to his 10 million plus followers – the world stood up in solidarity with Sri Lanka because it was Muslim attack on Christians on their Holy day. We, Buddhist’s, got off the hook once again . This could be our last time. We need to do our fasting, Vegetarianism , Meditation and yoga (Arya astaga marga) and let these weird, Muslims and Catholics alone.

Hoole is all about himself even at this moment of tragedy. He evidently has an exaggerated view of his relevance. He is also patronizing. I wish he would realize that we Muslims can take care of ourselves! We are the fastest growing religion in the planet. We don’t need him as our spokesman.

When the Tamils were slaughtered and tortured and burnt to death during the Tamil Pogrom the Racist Politicians were in support of the Pogrom. and did nothing , similarly they were seen protecting themselves from yesterday’s carnage , when they were in the knowledge of the imminent danger to the people yet no action was taken to prevent the carnage yesterday.
If it had been in civilised nations some one might have tendered the resignation and stepped down in shame and in respect of the dead.
Shameless politicians and shameless the whole lot.
While the whole world is asking the question why the intelligence of SL and its Leader did nothing for 2 weeks before the blasts.
People are dead now the blame game to escape from their responsibilities begins.

Dr Hoole, Hope the Gist of your article would be understood by the majority Sinhala Buddhist. Ie Tamil is not = to LTTE or Muslim not = to ISIS.
Please get this published in Sri Lankan papers.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s statement from the scene of the bomb blast is unbecoming for a Christian who said “ those responsible must be punished mercilessly “. In addition to totally betraying the spirit of Christianity, this statement can be used by Sinhala Buddhist extremists (whose darling the Cardinal has become) to inflame violence against all Muslims . most of them are peace loving like the majority of Buddhists or Christians or Hindus. Fake news! “It seems clear that the extremist group ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) has masterminded the attacks.”- The prof. Rat.
There is no information as of now to pin these barbaric attacks on the ISIS. “Seems” and possible are not good enough words to use unless you are a hack with another pseudo professor title. If you don’t know, then don’t speculate professor. Just shut up and wait for the evidence, and then weigh- in on the final outcome. Don’t spread misinformation. As the on-going investigations unfold, the results might or might not link this to ISIS. Without reasonable doubt, if the mastermind is the ISIS, then it would be fair to accuse that terror group. Furthermore, ISIS would love to take responsibility for this attack although they have not. If they would, this will help them brand themselves to win more recruits for their cause as their arses are being whipped in Syria and Philippines. Don’t fall victim to the same level like our other professor rat named GLP. This was a retaliatory attack in order to send a message for the Western crusaders: USA, Evangelical, Europe and the Vatican. This attack was a pay back for the Christchurch massacre at the two mosques on Muslims who were observing their prayers. This barbaric attack too was carried out to send a message to the West and their social media networks who live streamed and ADVERTISED that massacre of Muslims to the world. Now F off professor.

    Professor Hoole,

Please don’t drag the Sinhala people who were subjected to Terrible Bombings, Massacres and Up Rooting in to this..

The way the news of the Yahapalana Intelligence Report is panning out,the people who had access to the contents were hoping ping the Terrorist to be not Muslims or Tamils.

It seems those VVIPs were expecting a ” Terrorist” attack by the Sinhala Buddhists on their fellow Brothers and Sisters of the Catholic denomination.

This is the conclusion which can logically come to after reading and listening and watching all those statements from Govt, Opposition, the so called Experts who have a little Tilt towards the Yahapalanaya and even the NGOs..

One glaring example is Dr Ranil visiting Methodists in Anuradhapura .
And guaranteeing their Security and Safety from Good Friday to Easter Sunday.
But not telling the Catholics Arch Bishop in Colombo that everything is Not that Cool” even after the Police Chief’s Report had landed on his Door Steps, if not on his Desk.

What we ought to remember is, it is the great Union of the Tamils in Colombo and Jaffna , Muslims and the Christians who were reading from the same page of Dr Ranil, Maithris Sira and Madam Chadrikaa’s Hymm Book to kick out Rajapaksas and bring on the Yahapalanya.

Degrading Terrorism Intelligence , Degrading and sacking the Officers, promoting UNP Stooges to the Important Positions of the Armed Forces and Police and bowing to the UN Demands to go soft on Terror suspects and change Terrorism Control Legislation were their main priorities ..

Dr Ranil’s Government went even further to punish the Buddhist Priests who spoke against Terrorism potential and propensity for terrible Terrorist Attacks..of the Islamists
UNP stooges even tried to score political points after those skirmishes in Digana.

Yes of course no one can disagree with what Prof Hoole says. But the other question remains. How does one penetrate the mind of those who commit such atrocities? Without that one cannot stop it. Hundreds of troops on the ground can’t do much, or potentially could things worse as per the event in Vavuniya that Hoole relates if things went wrong.
The Muslim community itself can best ferret out these scoundrels and smash them; something the Sinhalese failed to do in the south (eg 1983, etc) and the Tamil people failed to do to the LTTE.

    Dear Prof. Hoole,
    .
It is a bold Tamil who will run the risk of saying anything at this point of time. There is a need to safeguard Muslims, but it is very difficult. So many of them will not listen to reason. They keep arguing that they are citizens of Sri Lanka, and they must be protected.
    .
Just before the Sinhala New Year I tried to reason with an English-speaking man who manages a shop which sells refurbished computers, and where I have been a customer. One soon runs into them saying that they have a right to their way of life (which of course has been ordained by Allah). This guy is not a bad fellow but one can make no progress.
    .
One doesn’t meet with this intransigence from every Muslim. His younger assistant seemed to appreciate what I was trying to say that they’d have to learn how to live with people with other world-views, but with this man I seem to make no progress. One thing I try to say is that they should get rid of MMDA, it’s such an unnecessary complication if indeed child marriages don’t take place. Then they ask what business it is of mine.
    .
Another thing that has to be got rid of is segregated schooling. I don’t know a word of Tamil; Education must necessarily be in the “mother -tongue”, but why must Hindus and Muslims be given separate schools? Where people have schooled together, there really is no problem. I talk with regard to the Old Boys’ Association of my Anglican run private school almost just in front of my school. Muslims are heavily represented in the Executive Committee; with them this communal problem doesn’t arise.
    .
I’m not sure that I’m saying anything coherent; just trying to get the first comment in on your article, so that we start off with something that is not hate-filled. Thanks for being so fool-hardy as to take this subject on. Somebody has to.

fundamentalism is a disease , something that humanity should not tolerate. How can one religion say only they are right and everybody else are infidels ?

A religion which says by killing you go to hell cannot be a good religion. If any religious idea makes a person a fanatic and make him close his mind to other ideas that should be considered a threat to the safety of the human race.

If there is a god, and all that the believers get is what they have now ( all Muslim countries are dictatorships or guided democracies, and way down in the happiness index and quality of life index. Also all Muslim countries are high in the corruption index) the reward for their stupidity is simply not worth it. But they say they get their rewards in after life ! What nonsensical people !

how can people identify innocents from the guilty unless you know them personally
till then it will be an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth in the old jewish tradition
if an isis like group was responsible for heinous crimes they have to be severely pumished and some innocents may also suffer in the process as in the jvp uprising

they deserve to be court martialled as they have to take the blame for the carnage

Vasudewa Nanayakkara who appeared in 360 degrees program in Derana TV on 22nd exposed the real situation behind the attack. According to him PM knew about this and he is lying by saying he was not aware of the warnings. He asked if Harin Fernando knew it if Mano Ganeshan knew it if Pujitha Jayasundera knew it, it is strange that the PM did not know it. He said PM is trying to put the blame on President and the President should make a statement to the public. What he disclosed in that discussion was really mind-boggling. What came out was ‘whether those who rule this country care for the people and if they cared it was an incident that could have been averted’. Those who are interested in knowing the motives and who is behind should watch that program. .

When Brits left India they created two rival countries deliberately expecting that they will go on fighting and it happened.
In Ceylon, they did a similar thing in a subtle way without dividing the country. They instigated Demala people to demand a Federal state. With that they knew Sinhalayo and Demala people will keep on fighting. The political system introduced by Brits and accepted by our ‘Kalu Suddas’ that gave ‘Wal Booru Nidahasa’ (freedom in the jungle) also contributed to this situation. Things happened exactly the way they planned.
    ——–
Demalu who are the remnants of invaders and descendants of slaves brought illegally by colonial parasites will never allow Sinhalayo who are the natives of Sinhale to live in peace. Demalu started the anti-Sinhala onslaught around 3rd century BC. Unless this country take some strong decisions and actions, this situation will drag on making Brits very happy.

Before we get into ethnic politics let us think about some facts. Fact one is that there was a warning issued by Indian sources which were conveyed to local law enforcement. Most senior Police officials knew of this threat. Fact number two the so called president of the country took upon himself all functions pertaining to the security establishment of the country and actively excluded the Prime Minister and the deputy minister of defense from ALL security council meetings. In fact not one single cabinet minister was allowed to attend security council meetings. Fact number three, in the aftermath of what happened this same imbecile ordered the heads of armed forces not to attend the security council meeting convened by the Prime minister and was reluctant to order a curfew after the PM drove to defense headquaters and waited for one hour for the chiefs to show up. This was after they did not show up at temple trees for the original meeting. So the question is what did the president know and why did he not take action and then proceed to undermine emergency efforts. He in my opinion needs to answer to the public or be sacked from his job for conspiracy and dereliction of duty. I place all the dead at his feet. This is on him and nobody else. As for the general mood among the Muslims there is no way to passify radicalized youth after letting radical ideology ferment for a long time. There is one place from whence this radical ideology has always emanated from. The whole world is aware of it and yet chose to do nothing about it.
