Human rights defender Balendran Jeyakumari has been released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate Court a short while ago.

When she was granted bail, the Magistrate had imposed strict conditions, which included a ban on foreign travels and has been ordered to report to the Police each month.
It was just a few weeks ago that Jeyakumari’s daughter Vibhooshika wrote to President Sirisena pleading for her mother’s release. Colombo Telegraph reported earlier this week that the government is considering her release to coincide with the Indian premier’s visit by the end of the week.
Jeyakumari (50) who was an avid human rights defender, was arrested last year in March under charges of harboring Gobi – an individual whom the previous government claimed was attempting to revive the LTTE in the country. She was thereafter detained in the Boossa camp without any charges filed against her while her young daughter was handed over to the care of the Probation department. She has been released after 362 days since her detention.

An attempt for resurgence of terrorism in Sri Lanka surfaced in general area Pallai in the Jaffna Peninsula calling for launching another phase of the LTTE struggle for a separate state. The information on several key suspects who were leading the campaign for resurgence of the LTTE also surfaced. Investigators made several arrests that led to recovery of arms, ammunitions, explosives and other material that were in their possession.
It was also revealed that this local group was functioning under the instructions of LTTE leaders Nediyawan and Vinayagam who are based in Europe. They were preparing the ground for another armed struggle. Immediate objectives of the local group included the recovery or war like material dumped by the LTTE during retreat, re-establishment of LTTE intelligence network, regrouping of the potential cadre including those rehabilitated, collecting information on potential targets including in other provinces.
Investigations revealed that the funds for these activities that came from Europe were being transferred using Hawala system which is an illegal system for money transfer widely used in the subcontinent. It was also revealed that many safe houses, vehicles and other resources required for resurgence of the LTTE had been procured by them using this money.
Three local leaders in the attempted resurgence of the LTTE were identified as Sundaralingam Kajeepan @ Thevihan (who was involved in aerial attacks on Anuradhapura Air Base and Kollonnawa Petroleum Storage in year 2007), Selvanayagam Kajeepan @ Gobi, Navarathnam Navaneethan @ Appan. Investigators trailing these local leaders made several arrests of second and third tier cadre. In one attempt on 13 March 2014 one of the suspected leaders known as Gobi escaped after shooting a police officer.
Volume of information that came pouring from the peace loving local public who did not approve of any attempt of resurgence of the LTTE helped investigations in a large measure. The general area where the three leaders, i.e Thevihan, Gobi and Appan were hiding was identified. On 10 April 2014 troops in a search operation in the jungle area off Padaviya recovered four back-packs containing rations, medicine, cloths, etc… believed to be used by the suspects.
The identified area was surrounded. In the early hours of 11 April 2014 three armed suspects who attempted to escape the area confronted the troops in the cordon. All three were killed and two of the dead were later identified as Sundaralingam Kajeepan @ Thevihan, and Selvanayagam Kajeepan @ Gobi. The third is yet to be identified, but is believed to be that of Navaratnam Navaneethan @ Appan.

Jeyakumari is not even a human rights defender.She is an ordinary woman looking for her son who was thought to have been dead until his photo appeared in a government publication as receiving vocational training at a rehabilitation center.As the authorities did not relent,she joined demonstrations and agitations for missing persons.She and her 12 year old daughter came into focus when they gave interviews to media when British Prime Minister David Cameron visited Jaffna during CHOGM.
Unable stomach the righteous allegations leveled by Jeyakumari, the TID arrested her on false allegations viz. assisting the regrouping of LTTE.How on earth this pitiable woman in search of her missing son could be charged or linked with such serious activity? Could a mother be faulted for agitating for the return of her son whose involuntary disapearance was caused by the State?
There is ample evidence that the three persons including Gobi and Appan who were allegedly killed on 11th April 2014 in a confrontation with the Army had been in fact were arrested by TID and kept in custody one month prior to the so called confrontation.This is nothing but cold blooded murder by Gota’s government in order to propagate a theory of regrouping of LTTE.It was also convenient ploy for the murderous TID outfit to justify it’s existence,to facilitate ransom killings,torture, kappan,robbery,sexual abuse and extortion, bribery etc. TID is nothing but a criminal outfit that ought to be outlawed.

I remember a story, when I was returning to middle east after my holiday at katunayaka army stopped me and found a small mistake , my date of birth in my ID was different which I know but did not bother to change. There is a saying in tamil, even though he tripped and fallen to the floor there is no sand in his moustache. These people will never become civilised. The Magistrate who imposed conditions on the lady was acting unlawfully as no one knows with what she is charged. She has been kept in prison illegally for one year. The “evidence” against Jeyakumari will probably not survive judicial scrutiny in a court of law on cross examination of the armymen involved in the incident where she is supposed to have allowed this “Gopi” to hide in her home, and the subsequent events of killings of Gopi and two minor tamil employees of the army in jungles of the north, as reported earlier.
The story of Gopi and two others searching for buried LTTE arms caches using stolen mine detectors is a figment of army’s imagination.
If this was not so, the army/attorney general would have requested an early date for trial.
There are 257 more citizens against whom evidence is doubtful.
They too should be released on bail – else it will be an infringement of their rights as citizens.

If the govt truly believes in honest reconciliation between the two communities it should have an impartial investigation and hold the responsible party accountable.
