Journalists In Politics: Gotabhaya Is The Cause Of Every Problem – Victor Ivan

By Uvindu Kurukulasuriya

Willa - Victor - DEW

Ravaya Editor Victor Ivan has stated that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is the cause of every problem, according to a source close to Wilfred Wickramasinghe (Willa), a businessman and close confidant of both President Rajapaksa and Victor Ivan. Our source, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that Willa Wickramasinghe has told him that Victor Ivan is doing a fantastic job of canvassing on behalf of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Basil Rajapaksa, in a way no one else is able to do.

Victor was invited for dinner with senior Minister DEW Gunasekara by Willa Wickramasinghe at his house on April 3, and the dinner discussion was mainly about how close advisers of Mahinda are misleading him. According to Victor Ivan, the External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris was the main culprit.  Ivan had said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa was not aware of  the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert Blake’s visit to Sri Lanka, or why he was coming. Blake had given a letter to be given to the President and G.L. Peiris had not passed on the letter. Apparently Blake and Mahinda Rajapaksa never met prior to the US backed resolution against Sri Lanka.

Victor Ivan has said that Mahinda Rajapaksa is kept ignorant purposely by people close to him. Victor’s big worry is that if a sufficient number of MPs crossover the government would collapse, and he is doing everything he can to prevent this. The suspicion is that most of the President’s close associates are not sincere. Neither G.L. Peiris nor President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge can be trusted.

When contacted, Victor Ivan admitted that the dinner took place, and Senior Minister DEW Gunasekara was also there he added. When asked if he has been lobbying disgruntled Ministers and MPs, he said his mission is for national consensus politics, and that he has been talking to TNA and UNP MPs too. He denied the claim that he said anything against the External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris. When asked whether he said Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is the cause of every problem for the regime, he did not deny it straightaway, but said that he disagrees with some of Gotabhaya’s actions while agreeing with others. Victor Ivan cut short the phone conversation saying there was heavy lightning in Colombo.

Since Victor Ivan divulged that senior Minister Dew Gunasekara was also at the dinner, Colombo Telegraph also contacted sources close to Gunasekara. According to them, Minister Gunasekara had never met Victor Ivan before, and the purpose of the meeting was to get to know about Mahinda’s views and concerns from Victor, as Mahinda divulges everything to Victor. They also confirmed the above dinner meeting and conversation did take place.

G is not a politician in the present context but only an official. Now he is enjoying full credit for the war win.Now all good and bad in war rest upon him as Sarath F is in prison. I think he is used to work in an environment where emergency is imposed. When emergency is lifted he works as if emergency is there. I cant understand the rational behind appointing ex Generals and Brigadiers to diplomatic posts. I think they are afraid to keep them here as there is a demand for them to involve in opposition politics. May be these army officers are lobbying for positions.

One also has to remember the eternal spin that would be put on anything coming from Victor Ivan as a Mahinda Rajapakse supporter. Victor’s spin was obviously to protect the Mahinda Rajapakses from any blame and to effectively shift it to the narrow personal confines.

To borrow from the daily vocabulary of the Sinhalese, ‘mahinda, umba baba… you can become the president, can win the war, amend law to be re-elected… yet you can’t recognize which cat in your hand is fooling you…’. of course we take this for fact.

        Maxi Mousi,
you are really sick, first you need a urologist to palpate your prostate glans, then a psychiatrist to do an analysis of your childhood trauma.
Mother raped by a Tamil man? Father killed by a journalist? Wife went with a LTTE man? Or polytraumatic patient? A joint intervention is needed?

In the current SL politics one does not know who is a traitor, who is a patriot and who is the man behind the white vans. But one thing is for sure—- There is no justice for the affected; Criminals are in power;Journalists (most) are in pay roll of the GoSL; Sinhala Buddhists have the sole right to everything and they can do legal/illegal activities

Victor Ivan is not a serious journalist but an Expert in Assembling Hand Bombs and an authority in diffusing Bombs remotely. His palms bear witness to indelible blood strains and the missing fingers will reminnesce how many innocent people were his bomb vicitms out of the 60 odd thousands murdered by the JVP of which Victor Ivan was a leading light. He should be languishing incognito in some remote part of Ausralia like his many bosom pals. Today he is a Whisky boozing capatlist able to rub shoulders with any Goverenment in power. He played out Million from Chandrika and A T Ariuyarathne. Was offered the Chairmanship of Lake House by Chandrika This is no to disparage V.I but to admire him as a an opportunist and a strategist and to assess a how fate can, condemn a holy man to hell and place a vagabond in heaven, if his Star are favourably placd. So trust not Victor about Gotabaya or any of those he names, tough none of whom the writer had never ever seen or met.

Victor Ivan is a very respected journalist and writer..Only ignorant fools who dont understand politics let alone the nations own history will always fall for the SPIN…. Now saying that I respect the Defence Secretary for his long service to ournation.. and for turning the Lankan army once again into a professional Force.. But its the intelligence aspect we have failed miserably.. intelligence should be gathered from high class dinner parties and other similar events.. where those businessmen and other socalled socialites who pass intelligence information to foreign diplomats and NGOs. As these people never gather these kind of information from the bath kade.. as wiki leaks have shown us and this has been true since the 80’s.. But most ministers and some diplomats are in the game for their own personal gain rather than rebuilding and serving sri lanka.. these fools have got accustomed to Corruption introduced by CBK and hid behind the war, and not doing their jobs.. now the war is over they still try their old methods.. but this time no excuse to hide behind.. and thus we see a nation that struggles.. Its high time we replace some of these fools

Personally I feel that Victor was one of the best chief editors next to late Lasantha until the time of Chandrika B. Kumarathunga’s era. As I recall, even Chandrika tried to gift him 200,000/- after coming to power for the job he did to bring Chandrika to power via printed media but he didn’t accept (as per him).

Now the tide has changed and “maybe” he has understood that the printed media will not bring him any personal gains but leave him with debts running an old press. Here is where we see MR lending his hand taking the advantage of Victor’s position.

As a human who had strived trying to make the nation know what they don’t know and made the nation see what they didn’t see in a black and white perspective is now tired. He knows now that today the sword is mightier that the pen. Hence, he wants to retire rich and powerful. It is a sorrowful to end but that is what he has chosen.

G is not a politician, but unfortunately his brother is the President. I think MR does not have a proper understanding of military affairs. G is attempting to build a quasi military regime through his manipulations. We liberals and democrats and socialists should work against it.

In my view Jounalists are the cause of all the present problems in this country.
They don’t work for National Intertesets. They always work for
the Interests of so called International community, their masters.
They never carry stories that would promote stregnthen Nationalism Even they were stated or expressed by by Mahinda Rajapaksa.
For example, not a single journalist wanted to popularise and strengthen the solemn statement made by the President in the Parliament that here after in this country there are no minorities called tamil muslim or any other. The tamil war or tamil terrorism
was created on the Tamil minority issue by the so called international community.
There are thousands of similar example.
Just one more most recent example.Did a single journalist carry a story about the request by the people to hold so called international community including the UN and the leftists accountable for damage to the Country and the Nation done by tamil terrorism.
Cannot everybody see how that same left parties that called for implementation of the LLRC a duplicate of Darusman’s.

What a rubbish article! Seriously, the quality of journalism in this country has gone to the dogs. I think my nephew can write a better article than this. Ooruvarige Uvindu, stick to writing in Sinhala son!

I simply can’t understand what it is so irritating for you about the article..Is it the content or the style? And what has your nephew got to do with it?
Maybe you were bred and born in a western country or maybe coming form an elitist class born with a silver spoon. I am sure you may be mastering the “Kaduwa” so efficiently that you use it to intimidate the people you associate. But the writer is capable of delivering the message effectively and has the ability to articulate. What matters most is that all the readers are able to understand him and are looking forward to his articles.

      To Colombo Telegraph is Crap,
Talking of English, please note that “rubbish” is an uncountable noun. Therefore, you cannot use an article (“a”, in this instance) before this noun. Further, as it’s a noun, you cannot use it as an adjective as you have tried to do.

You have just proved the accuracy of the Sinhala adage Nodanna demalata gihin varige nasagannawa.

I have a huge respect for Uruvarige Vannila Eththo but you’re trying to desecrate this name by misspelling it as “Ooruvarige”!

I suppose your nephew and you have obtained degrees in Rubbish from the University of Garbage.

If all this news gets around to us ordinary people how can the President be ignorant? The problem is that the citizens elected one President and got 4. – President – Public Relations (Mahinda), President- Defence Sector (Gotabaya, President – Economic Sector (Basil), President – Politicians training school(Chamal). These are all governed parallely.

This forum should not descend into a mud-throwing exercise or a poo-fight as they say in some parts. If one reads the article and then the comments, one gets the idea that readers or commentators often get side-tracked into personal disagreements rather than debate the points in the said article, facts, fiction, or its style and biases etc. I would like to suggest that people attempt to stick to the contents and its attributes rather than pick fights…
