‘Keep Frederica Jansz Safe’, ‘Embassies In Sri Lanka Should Raise Her Case’ – ARTICLE 19

By  ARTICLE 19 –

ARTICLE 19 is very concerned for the safety of Sri Lankan journalist, Frederica Jansz, who has been threatened with death by the country’s defence secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Dr Agnes Callamard

“The threat against journalist Frederica Jansz is the latest demonstration of the Sri Lankan government’s systematic attacks against independent and opposition-supporting journalists and media houses. They have showered scorn on journalists and shown a complete inability or unwillingness to prosecute perpetrators of violence toward and the killing of journalists,” said Dr Agnes Callamard, ARTICLE 19 executive director.

“We urge the authorities to keep Frederica Jansz safe. We also urge embassies in Sri Lanka to raise her case with the government.”

Frederica Jansz is the editor of Sri Lankan weekly newspaper, The Sunday Leader, and was conducting a phone interview with Rajapaksa, who is also the brother of the president.

According to The Sunday Leader, Rajapaksa told Jansz during the interview: “You pig that eats shit! You shit shit dirty fucking journalist! […] People will kill you! People hate you! They will kill you!”

The Sunday Leader and its journalists face regular attack. The newspaper’s editor, Lasantha Wickramatunge, was assassinated on his way to work on 8 January 2009. Nobody has ever been prosecuted for the crime.

Censorship and violence has recently increased against online sources of information and their authors. On 29 June, eight journalists and an assistant were arrested after the Sri Lankan police raided the offices of two news websites,srilankamirror.com and srilankaxnews.com.

The Sunday Leader had also been sued by Gota at the time that Lasantha the editor was killed, for what the former deemed defamation over exposure of dodgy arms purchases in that most couragous of newspapers..

Sunday Leader is the only newspaper in Sri Lanka that honorably lives up to its time proven adage of being cold and courageous.

True! There are better ways to get information than rile someone who is known to lose his cool, and then stretch whatever he says in anger. Gota has to learn how to keep his cool and handle media well, and Sunday Leader has to go back to journalism school. The paper is courageous, no doubt, but its methods suck and that makes some of the news it tries to impart very questionable.

Lasantha was killed for exposing Mahindas attempt to steal tsunami donations for helping Hambantota.
Gota should be sectioned under the mental health act.
Give the uuneducated uncultured rascals enough rope and they will hang themselves.

All this while the corrupt violent leaders in the third world countries, have been committing heinous crimes and getting away as they were being backed by Internationally Corrupt Political Powers as they carry their brief. At last some voices of Sanity surfacing in the horrizon, should be encouraged to expose the vicious, all around the Globe including their Masters.

If anything should happen to Fredrica you know who is responsible. Former editor Lasantha was killed but to date no one was caught that is because the inquiry cannot proceed any further if a finger is pointed at those who run the country! Websites are banned and their journalists arrested and harassed, though legally they are on the right side. Some in the Government have said they are responsible for attacking and posing death threats to journalists, yet they have gone scot-free. Police have no power to investigate such claims. For that matter Police will not investigate any crime committed by politicos. This is the state of democracy in Sri Lanka and no wonder the Government is being blamed by the world at large for the lawlessness and the mockery of rule of law. It is the world at large that must come to the aid of the helpless Sri Lankans to save them from persecution. They have a moral obligation to do so.

    Dear All.

The country is build by its leaders. What can you expect from its people when the leaders act, talk & behave in this manner.
Expl:If a father in a house drinks, talks in slang & behave like a hooligan, then the children of that family will also follow the fathers steps. Now this is what is happening to Sri Lanka. I was in the Dudley Shelton Senanayake times and they were very honorable people. Now we will never get such people in Sri Lanka and therefore Sri Lanka will become hooligans country. A country which is surrounded by natural beauty and resources are in the hands of these goons. God bless Sri Lanka and its poor people.

Fredrika provokes. She is a p…k teaser.I know that she hopes the Defence Secretary will come after her but that has not happened and will not happen. She will be disappointed and then she’ll try to get him to abuse her once more. Article 19 is rubbish because I know that the media and the politicians are smiling and kissing each others bums. The Leveson inquiry has shown that . What I am now afraid of is this frustrated middle aged woman might take her own life and say GR did her in. She is a common slut.

      Rowdy Peter:
In the language that is, very obviously, the specialty of someone like you: you are little more than a piece of human excreta and, typically, a loud and obnoxious lackey of the present set of goons parading as government. May I help you find the rock from under which you have escaped?

Those who think the IC will come in and replace GOSL and force a Sudan style referendum for the Tamils are in never never land. If the IC wont take action in Syria, you REALLY think they will do more on SL than hold meaningless votes at the UN to please the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu?

Gota may be the best interview on the World stage since Prince Phillip stopped doing interviews. Gotta love the man’s candor as he really pulls no punches, unlike most politicos who communicate in doublespeak never clearly declaring their true views or intentions. And to give credit where credit is due, after defeating the LTTE he took on the perhaps even more daunting challenge of trying to make Colombo a modern metropolis with adequate infrastructure. Meanwhile, the propaganda machine hassles him over minutae like flight details from Europe for the puppy he got his wife. Here in the US we think the press is often preoccupied with the petty but the Lankan Press puts them to shame in that regard.

You must be another visa over stayer in US that made slurpies with Gota at one of the seven elevens in CA. Just put a sock in it and go back to your village in Lanka, I am sure they are missing their village idiot badly.

I am a native born Californian and 100% Anglo, not Sinhalese. But unlike so many westerners who know/care very little, and who are brainwashed by the LTTE propaganda machine, I have studied the conflict thoroughly and have a much more complete understanding of the matter. I do wish SL had 7/11 as a slurpee would be perfect for those sultry afternoons. Necto flavored would be the best. Maybe I’ll look into opening a franchise as SL looks like an excellent place for foreign investment with the stability brought about by the successful implementation of Gota’s War. I also want to ask Elephant House about importing Necto to the US. By helping SL export more, the standard of living of all Lankans, Tamils included, will be enhanced.
