Activist groups are now confirming that a Tamil woman from Kilinochchi and her 13 year old daughter have been arrested by police investigators following a five hour raid on their home at Dharmapuram last evening.
Both of them are reportedly being held in Vavuniya.
Reports that Balendran Jeyakumari a prominent campaigner for families of the disappeared in the Kilinochchi District and her daughter were being detained inside her home which is in the Indian Housing scheme broke late afternoon yesterday (13).
Media and Tamil politician Gajen Ponnambalam reported that Jayakumari’s home had been surrounded by police and armed forces personnel at about 4:30 P.M. on Thursday (13). Ponnambalam and other friends who called Jayakumari on her phone reported that the woman had first answered and that later her phone was snatched away by men claiming to be police, who said there was an investigation under way before switching off the mobile. Neighbours reported the sound of screams and crying by Vithushaini at the home. Media personnel rushing to the scene were not permitted to get close to Jayakumari’s residence, with police cordoning off the area near her home. For several hours no reports emerged about their whereabouts, although late Wednesday night, Ponnambalam said there were unconfirmed reports Jayakumari and her daughter had been arrested.
Police meanwhile, told reporters in Colombo that one policeman had been injured in an attack when a team of police personnel was attempting to arrest a suspected Ex-LTTE cadre in Kilinochchi. Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana told the BBC on Thursday that the suspect had been in a house in which there were two women who were now being investigated. More unconfirmed reports are emerging about further police casualties.
Jayakumari and her daughter Vithushaini are familiar faces in disappearances protests and were heavily photographed during the missing peoples’ protest in Jaffna when British Prime Minister David Cameron visited the area during CHOGM in November last year. Jayakumari had four children – two sons were killed in the war and a third went missing after she handed him over to the military in May 2009. Her 13 year old daughter is her last remaining child. Both Jayakumari and her daughter handed over documents of their family members last whereabouts and information to Channel 4’s Jonathan Snow who was mobbed by the demonstrators in Jaffna during Cameron’s visit. Sources said that the two women were being harassed on suspicion of having been informants for the British Broadcaster.

This child is being arrested just because it is a Tamil child.
It has spent its 13 years not having one single day enough to fill up her stomach, not a school to go to read some letters, (even the UN has declared that what its’ age children should have been doing at her age,) no sibling to play with or quarrel with for a change, but her mother had taken the stomach pain to give birth for three. TNA_Arrest of Jeyakumari
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) protests in the strongest terms the arrest of a widow named Balendra Jeyakumari and her thirteen-year-old daughter Vidushika from Dharmapuram in the Kilinochchi District last evening, Thursday 13 March 2014. The Sri Lankan Police claims that gunshots were heard in the vicinity of their home and that a policeman was injured. They also claim that the alleged attackers appeared to have taken shelter in Jeyakumari’s house.
Jeyakumari and Vidushika are active participants in most protests conducted by families of the disappeared in the Northern Province. Jeyakumari’s two sons were killed in the war and the third went missing after she handed him over to the military in May 2009. Vidushika is her only remaining child.
A massive contingent of several hundred security personnel surrounded Jeyakumari’s house last afternoon, confiscated their mobile telephones and interrogated them for over four hours before taking them away. They were reportedly held in Vavuniya overnight and were to be produced before a Magistrate today, Friday 14 March 2014. However, as of 3.00pm, they are yet to be produced. TNA Members of Parliament Mavai Senathirajah and E. Saranapavan have been at the Magistrate’s Court premises the whole of today. We have now heard reports that Jeyakumari and Vidushika may be detained by an Order of the Secretary, Ministry of Defence under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act, thereby circumventing the legal requirement that they be produced before a Magistrate within twenty-four hours of arrest.
The TNA is shocked and appalled at the conduct of the authorities in this regard. The high-handed conduct of the government, even while its human rights record is under scrutiny at the current sessions of the Human Rights Council, is illustrative of the government’s disdainful conduct towards the Human Rights Council. The TNA demands that Jeyakumari and Vidushika be produced before a Magistrate forthwith and released. We remain deeply concerned for the safety and wellbeing of Jeyakumari and Vidushika, particularly given the context of reported widespread sexual violence against women in the Northern Province. We urge the international community to take all possible measures to ensure the safety and release of Jeyakumari and Vidushika.

The ruling party had introduced a system in all over the country to appoint few of their thugs as village monitors. They enjoy special powers and privileges. The hapless police has no say but to collude with them. You just have to be a ruling party contestant in any election. You will get enough money to win that election by hook or crook!
Unless there is a movement which is going to stand up to this with the support of media like Colombo Telegraph – the only website I am sure this comment will be published- I have tried another popular site they failed to publish a few times our country is going to be another failed state and very soon drug barons will have our country as a narcotic hub of Asia & far East.

The timing of the arrest was perfect. I suspect a section of the armed forces, notably the TID, is out to discredit this government. Or even topple the government. Now the Police hunt down a widowed mother and her 13 years daughter for no other reason other than they joined thousands of other demonstrators demanding to know the whereabouts their loved ones. The government and armed forces have failed to account for dis-appearances of LTTE top leaders who surrendered to the armed forces. Their spouses saw them taken away in CTB buses in front of their eyes after the armed forces promised they will be released after inquiry. The Government asked the Thamil people to lodge their complaints with the LLRC, but those who appeared before the same LLRC are hunted like dogs!
