“Beloved-of-the-Gods, King Piyadasi desires that all religions should reside everywhere….” ~ Ashokan Rock Edict 7
Pallegama Hemaratana thero is no longer the Atamasthanadhipati. Accused of child rape, he was officially removed from that august position in May 2026 by the chief prelates of his nikaya. Yet there he was a few days ago, posing for the cameras while gifting a Sri Maha Bodhi sapling to retired rear-admiral Sarath Weerasekara, SLPP politician, Rajapaksa acolyte, and minister of public security under Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Mr Weerasekara took the sapling in procession and planted it in Vadunnagala in the Northern province, an archaeological site which is being promoted via social media as the next battlefield between Sinhala-Buddhists and Tamil-Hindus.
Vadunnagala was home to a thriving Buddhist temple complex called Pabbhata Viharaya during the Anuradhapura era. Abandoned about a millennium ago, it was claimed by the jungle like so many ancient sites. In the post-war era, this ancient ruin deep within the Nainmadu forest in the Vavunia district was transformed into a terrain of contestation in ethno-religious politics.
In 2023, Galgamuwe Santhabodhi thero, a monk at the forefront of land-wars in the North and the East, filed a fundamental rights petition seeking a ban on Hindus worshipping at the site. The Supreme Court refused. Instead, it affirmed the right to worship of all parties concerned, subject to archaeological regulations.
Then the limelight shifted first onto Kurundi and subsequently onto Tissa Vihara. Vadunnagala ceased being an ‘issue.’
Now Vadunnagala is back in business. Galgamuwe Santhabodhi thera began a social media campaign, planning a pirith ceremony for 12 September and a mass sil campaign for the full-moon poya. Both were Saturdays, the day when Hindus were to have their Purattasi pujas. The magistrate court allowed the two ceremonies to go ahead, adjuring the parties involved to maintain peace.
It was into these troubled waters Sarath Weerasekara waded armed with the Sri Maha Bodhi sapling gifted to him by Pallegama Hemaratana thero. The sapling was planted at the archaeological site. A plan to build a new Buddhist temple there is being mooted. Battle lines are drawn. The addition of the ‘bo sapling’ has upped the stakes considerably.
The immediate future is easy to imagine – an act of vandalism by Tamil extremists or a false flag operation by Sinhala extremists. And, possibly, an ethno-religious explosion to national (Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim) detriment.
Their sole refuge
Whenever the Rajapaksas are in need, they seek refuge in the Triple Gems, in their own way. The deploy the images of the Buddha, the Mahanama-version of the Dhamma, and the political Sangha to gain power, retain power, divert public attention or escape justice.
The Rajapaksas are in dire need today. Namal Rajapaksa is in remand prison. A blue notice has been issued on Basil Rajapaksa currently hiding from Lankan justice in his adopted homeland. Shiranthi Rajapaksa is playing hide-and-seek in Singapore.
Salvation is needed, and fast.
Enter Sarath Weerasekara with the supposed Sri Maha Bodhi sapling.
The gifting of a Sri Maha Bodhi sapling is not a simple matter of asking and giving, but a complex process. The propagation of saplings is not done though cuttings but seeds. “The Department of National Botanical Gardens maintains a dedicated facility at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya, where seeds are cultivated under controlled conditions.”. To obtain one of those saplings, multiple approvals are necessary from several state and ecclesiastical authorities.
And yet, here is the disgraced former custodian of Sri Maha Bodhi gifting a bo-sapling to a politician with a divisive agenda.
Since Pallegama Hemaratana thero is no longer the Atamasthanadhipati, how did he obtain that sapling? Are the chief prelates and the state authorities aware of this development or not? What was the deal behind the sapling being gifted to Mr Weerasekara? Did the SLPP politician promise the monk freedom from prosecution and restoration of lost status, once the Rajapaksas are back in power?
And if the now-disgraced former custodian obtained the sapling sans official approvals and through the backdoor, what guarantee is there that it is a true sapling? Is this a false sapling being planted in a contested site to set the stage for a false flag operation, possibly in time for November full-moon poya?
Something similar was attempted with Kurundi in 2023. On August 2023, parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila called a media conference to announce that Tamil politicians were planning to build a kovil in Kurundi on 18 August. On the same day, posters in loud red letters appeared exhorting Sinhalese to Wake Up and Save Kurundi.
Fortunately, Sinhalese-Buddhists in their thousands did not descend on Kurundi. Buddhist and Hindu ceremonies were held side-by-side with no incidents. Galgamuwe Santhabodhi thero was the self-styled chief incumbent of Kurundi. He tried to incite an incident but the police restrained him. One policeman was even heard advising him to make a complaint to the police and to seek judicial assistance instead of trying to create trouble.
Subsequently, the kovil story was revealed as a lie. A group of Tamil residents had been permitted by the Mullativu magistrate court to hold a Hindu religious ceremony in Kurundi, under conditions imposed by the Archaeological Department. That was all.
Three years on, the same Galgamuwe Santhabodhi thero is claiming that a Hindu kovil is going to be built in Vadunnagala. Identical playbook, this time with the addition of a ‘Sri Maha Bodhi sapling.’ Soon, there will be cries about the bo sapling being in danger, demands to protect it. Soon, there will be attempts to ‘awaken’ the Sinhalese to save this priceless heritage. And who better to lead this patriotic struggle than Mr Weerasekara’s boss, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa?
The Rajapaksas are past masters at creating crises and enemies, literally out of thin air.
Remember the Halal issue?
For several months between late-2012 and early-2013, the life and death crisis facing the Sinhala Buddhist nation was the Halal issue. The anti-Halal campaign came from nowhere and raged for several months, to the exclusion of every other concern from rising living costs to the illegal impeachment of a chief justice. It consumed the decades-old amity between Buddhists and Muslims (without which the Eelam War could have taken a different trajectory) and reimaged Muslims as the greatest existential threat to Sinhala-Buddhist civilisation.
Then, as abruptly as it roared into existence, the Halal issue fizzled out. The toxicity it generated would live on though, leading via Aluthgama and Digana riots to the Easter Sunday massacre, which in turn helped Gotabaya Rajapaksa to gain the presidency in 2019.
The BBS and Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara achieved near-instant notoriety with the Halal issue. They promised to banish Halal from Sri Lanka or die in the process. Then, one fine day, they allowed the Halal issue to be consigned to the graveyard of non-issues. They did so because they were not independent agents, but Rajapaksa cat’s paws. A few months after Halal problem vanished, Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara re-emerged as an anti-devolution warrior, at the head of a Rajapaksa creation called the ‘Nationalist Collective.’ Addressing its inaugural rally, Rev. Galagoda-Atte Gnanasara Thero said, “This is not the time for Buddhist monks to meditate in temples…. If politicians are going in the wrong direction, we have a sacred right to step in” (Divaina – 3.7.2013).
In 2025, the Rajapaksas facing another humiliating defeat at the LG polls commenced its election campaign by showcasing Tissa Vihara. Appearing in a press conference with SLPP general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, Sarath Weerasekara (soundly defeated in Colombo in 2024 parliamentary election) accused the government of endangering national security by allowing Tamil extremists to ‘destroy’ Tissa Viharaya. “Has the North been given to the separatists?” he asked. Now he can repeat the accusation with Sri Maha Bodhi sapling in Vadunnagala replacing Tissa Vihara.
There are certain basic similarities in these non-issues. They appear and disappear suddenly, without warning. Their lives are of short duration, but of burning intensity. They have nothing to do with the real concerns of ordinary people, who are trying to live their lives under difficult conditions, now as then. These people won’t march to save Shiranthi or Namal Rajapaksa. But they might march, if they can be convinced that the government which promised them succour and has failed to honour that promise is also endangering a Sri Maha Bodhi sapling.
Lessons from 2023
The manner in which Ranil Wickremesinghe as president dealt with the Kurundi crisis is a masterclass on how to respond when extremists try to weaponise archaeology.
When Kurundi started becoming a political talking point, President Wickremesinghe called a meeting of the officials of the Archaeological Department and asked the Director General about the department’s unnatural focus on the North and East. He told the director general not to obtain funds from outside sources because as a state entity, the Department can accept funds only from External Resources Department. When the director refused to abide by the law, he took the director to task. The director resigned.
“If anything (of archaeological value) is found nobody can construct a house or Buddhist temple there,” President Wickremesinghe emphasised. “It is owned by the country”. The removal of archaeological sites from the bubbling cauldron of ethno-religious politics is a vital necessity. President Wickremesinghe took an important first step. Thanks to his firm stand, no other religio-archaeological flashpoints occurred during his presidency. Similarly, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s refusal to bow down to extremist pressures helped prevent a potential crisis in Tissa Viharaya. Will he act with similar firmness regarding the latest landmine – at least in the interests of his own government – or will he continue to ignore the issue, until it explodes in his face?
Sarath Weerasekara is a veteran in the weaponisation of archaeology. In 2023, he used his parliamentary privileges to launch a vicious attack on the Mullativu magistrate who had intervened to prevent Kurundi from igniting. Reading from a prepared speech, the then parliamentarian Weerasekara said, “We cannot be at all satisfied about the orders and decisions of the magistrate in charge of that area… A few days ago, this Tamil magistrate came to Kurundi Viharaya on an observational tour. I was also there… We must remind this magistrate that this is a Buddhist country… Not just separatist Tamil politicians but also magistrates with such attitudes are responsible for creating conflict between races and religions.”
The Mullativu magistrate, T Saravanaraja, resigned from his judicial posts alleging threats to his life and pressure from state authorities over his Kurundi rulings, and left the country.
The coming battle over Vadunnagala is likely to be dirtier. This time, the Rajapaksas have nothing to lose but their (current and future) chains. They also have an entire lost world to gain. In the Sri Maha Bodhi sapling, they have a potent weapon. Since the sapling couldn’t have been obtained via the proper legal/official channels, an investigation into its theft and the use of the law against the suspects would be the way to go. The question is, will President Dissanayake let the law take its course? Or will he dither until the problem turns lethal?

Same is true for all clergy of all religions except for the holy men of Islam. They have set the rules so that they can marry several girls even aged only nine. In the Catholic church, they are paying millions of compensation to victims, either due to court injunctions, or due to out of court “keep silent” agreements. We have the same in Sri Lanka, and there is even a movie with Alston Koch entitled (Gospel) According to Matthew. The title is a deliberate, dark pun on the biblical Gospel of Matthew, but the film itself is an English-language Sri Lankan crime thriller directed by Chandran Rutnam. It stars singer-turned-actor Alston Koch as Father Mathew Peiris and Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez as his mistress. What is depicted is the tip of the iceberg as to what is going in cloistered places of all religions. The Archbisop is the Maestro for poking into political affairs, where he is looking for the brains of the Easter carnage, but failed to ask the Catholic priests who adminstered blessings to Harin Fernado’s father who had warned his son Harin to not to go to Church.

Hello Chiv,
My Father stood in our local Elections for the SNP (Scottish National Party) in the 1980s. He knew SNP activist Willie McRae. Willie was found dead in his Car in the Highlands. The Official Verdict was suicide, however, the Gun was found about 100 yards from the Car and one of the Local Newspapers had published an article that claimed Aberdeen Royal Infirmary had found 2 Bullets in his Brain. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-33133211
We knew that Willie was investigating the Faslane Nuclear Submarine Base. But we didn’t know at the time that he was also investigating Paedophillia amongst the Royal Family. For many decades rumours had been circulating about this. On a later trip to Northern Ireland I was told unequivocally that Lord Mountbatten was procuring young boys from Kincora Boys Home https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07907184.2026.2643572

The British Establishment has a long history of covering up this subject, not just the Royals. The son of American writer Paul Theroux, Louis also interviewed Jimmy Saville – https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=LSgu3DPuemQ
I had heard about Savile from a couple of BBC Roadies in the late 70s. We heard many stories about Royals, Politicians and Celebrities that were involved in these Paedo Rings; Peter Mandelson and the Former Prince Andrew are not alone. When the truth comes out about Epstein & Trump you will see how widespread this abomination is. Look at the desperation of Todd Blanche to stop the Publication of Foreign Language Emails from the Epstein Files https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEhnvAhlitw

The Mountbattens have had a notorious record on that aspect of their career.
Several things about Lady M were public knowledge, but rarely discussed.
Being a gay was an issue in much of the last century, and badly needed covering up.

Saville was very popular with pop music fans and later children through his TV programmes.
There were plenty more like him in the entertainment business.
I wonder if an urge for power over people drives their perversion.

Hello SJ,
I have often puzzled over why the BBC covered up for Savile and others. I think the Epstein situation provides part of the answer. They build networks of both participants and victims that blur the distinction of what is Criminal, and there is the ever present threat that Money and Power will prevail. Plus in Epstein’s case he had Incriminating Evidence (Video and other) to keep Participants from going Public.
Just have a listen to Donald Trump admitting to his perversions – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGpVreCqNLo&t=5s
This was from his Howard Stern Interview which has been corroborated by Participants in his Pageants.

Hello SJ,
I met the BBC Roadies that told me about Savile at a popular Aberdeen Venue. My friend (Lighting and Sound Engineer) was doing the Lighting for Clodagh Rodgers and Bruce Forsyth and asked me to help. That was 1976 if I remember correctly. I asked quite a few women if they believed what the Roadies had said. Every one of them said yes and called him a Creepy Bast*rd.
Rolf Harris was another one – https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/may/23/from-childrens-entertainer-to-convicted-criminal-the-downfall-of-rolf-harris
Here are more names from Operation Yewtree – Pop Star Gary Glitter, Comedians Jim Davidson and Freddie Starr, driver David Smith and PR guru Max Clifford.
There is more to it than just protecting the “good name of the BBC”.

SJ says Being a gay was an issue in much of the last century, and badly needed covering up. …..I wonder if an urge for power over people drives their perversion.
Modern mdecial science does not regard homosexulaity and lesbianism as perversions. They were declared perversions and deadly sins in the Abrahamic religious texts such as the Bible or Koran.
Many innocent people were driven to suicide by an intolerant society. Allen Turing, the computer scientists was one such person.
Today, many civilized countries allow gay marraiges etc., and they lead perfectly normal lives. So, SJ calling it a perversion is to go back to Victorian prejudices.

I was told by a few sources that Mountbatten’s Fishing Boat was blown up by PIRA (Provisional IRA) for that reason. Mountbatten, his Grandson and a local boy were all killed in the Explosion.
In Alan Turing’s time quite a few Politicians and Career Civil Servants were Gay. At that time so called “Homosexual Acts” were against the Law.
Even Sri Lanka had its own Gay Enclaves in pre-Independence days. Have a look for Major General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald and Lionel Wendt’s “43” Group.

As usual, writer Tisaranee Gunasekera is trying to stir a controversy over “Vadunnagala”, a historically very important religious site for Buddhists where Hindus or Tamils have absolutely no connection.
The correct place name of the local name “Vadunnagala” should be “Weda-Unna Gala”, a rock-mountain where Lord Buddha stayed.
Archaeologically, there is no controversy whatsoever that “Vadunnagala” which is also known as “Vaddhamana Parvata Vihara”, is an extremely important place for Buddhists, as its history goes as far back to Konagama Buddha.
According to Sinhalese documentary evidence, “Vadunnagala” has been mentioned as “Vaddhamana Parvata” (Vaddhamana Rock) and “KannaVaddhamana” or “Vaddhamana Kanda (Mountain Vaddhamana) in Mahavamsa (the original), Mahavamsa Tika, Dipavamsa, Attakatha, Anagatavamsa, Pali Canon and G.P. Malalasekera’s “The Dictionary of Pāli Proper Names”.
According to Mahavamsa, Dipavamsa and Vinaya Pitaka Commentary (Attakatha), “Vaddhamana” was the Capital of Ceylon (Varadipa) at the time of Konagama Buddha which was ruled by a king called Samiddha.
According to Anagatavamsa, the next Buddha Maitriya will be born or occupy a palace in “Vaddhamana”.
According to Pali Canon and the Dictionary of Pali Proper Names, “Vaddhamanaka-Tittha” was a landing place and a crossing on the “Maha Valuka Nadi” (today’s Mahaweli River).

Hindus and Tamils have also the right to visit Buddhist shrines as the Buddha is not a teacher specific ONLY TO SINHALESE BUDDHISTS.
Buddhagosha the monk who wrote the Vishuddhimagga was a Tamil.
Sinhalese come to worship Hindu shrines, not only in Kithragamam (Katharagama), but even in the North.
I am not a religious person and I think religions are cultural manisfestations and no one should be blocked from them. Today, even if you are not a Christian, and even though you know that Chirtianity has been responsible for horrific historic crimes, you can still go to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Sunday morning and listen to religious Organ Music, irrespective of whether you are Tamil or Arab or French or Sinhala or what ever,

You say, “Hindus and Tamils also have the right to visit Buddhist shrines…..” Is that what Tisaranee Gunasekara says?
And, if you are correct, why are Hindus and Tamils against Buddha statues and Buddhist temples in the Northern and Eastern provinces? Why do they act like the two provinces are their exclusive properties and native Sinhalese Buddhist heritage there?
Hindus and Tamils are NOT worshipping Buddhist shrines! They are either destroying Buddhist archaeological sites in the two provinces or converting them into Hindu temples.

Kataragama Devalaya is NOT a Hindu temple. The original temple was built by King Jetta Gamini Abhaya (Dutu Gemunu) in honour of God Ravana’s Boar Avatar, Mahasona, who worked as the 10th giant of the king’s legendary giants. The location was decided by the king himself by shooting an arrow from Weda Siti Kanda (Vadihiti kanda) when he went there to fulfill a vow.
The image in Kataragama with 6 heads and 12 hands was originally an image of God Dasis Ravana whose 10 heads and 20 hands, a symbol of his 10 skills, were reduced to 6 heads and 12 hands by the British.
16th century Portuguese writers have mentioned that the Sinhalese have worshipped two gods in Kataragama and one had a head of a boar (Kataragama Deviyo). Also, there was no god called “Skandha”. It is “Kavandha” which means “a body without a head”. “Kathir” is the Tamil version for the Sinhala word “Khadira”. It was the British who combined the two Gods and made them one. In fact, the British erased all the evidence of Ravanas. Anyway, Ravanas are sages. One day, their true history will come to life.

Ccchampa,
“Kataragama Devalaya is NOT a Hindu temple”
You are absolutely right, as always.
“Kataragama” comes from the Portuguese Catar which is their name for Qatar. St. Catherine of Doha is the patron Saint of Qatar. The Devale was originally set up as a Catholic Church by Pearl divers from Qatar. There is an image of the Saint in one of Ravana’s heads.
You are correct, and anyone who says you are a nut must have his head examined.

To CChampa. Thanks for this smog of mythology. I invite you to try to distinguish between verifiable history and anecdoal legend. The claims made are historically inaccurate, linguistically flawed, and rely on folk etymologies rather than academic or historical consensus. While Sri Lankan history is rich with syncretism between Sinhalese Buddhist and Tamil Hindu traditions, the specific assertions regarding a boar-headed deity, the name “Kavandha,” and the etymology of the town do not align with historical records. There is no record in 16th-century Portuguese chronicles (such as João de Barros, Diogo do Couto, or Fernão de Queiroz) describing a Kataragama boar-headed god. Cite your reference please.
Kataragama Deviyo (Skanda/Murugan) is universally depicted in both Sinhalese and Tamil traditions as a handsome, multi-faced (six heads) and multi-armed warrior deity riding a peacock. The closest connection to a boar is the Uran Keliya (wild boar hunt) ritual performed at minor regional folk shrines, which represents a separate jungle-based syncretism rather than the central deity of Kataragama. The name Skanda borrowed to Sinhala (ස්කන්ධ / ස්කන්ද) is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning “attacker.” It has been documented in Vedic and Puranic Indian literature for millennia—long before Elu/Sinhala.

What mythology?
Unlike India which does not have a written history, the Sinhalese have a well recorded history supported by archaeological, epigraphical, architectural, sculptural, speleological, numismatic and documentary evidence.
.
Buddhaghosha was NOT a Tamil as India has no record whatsoever to prove that Tamils existed at the time. Buddhaghosa was a Burmese monk and he did not write any book including Visuddhimaga. He came to Ceylon (Sinhaladvipa) to copy our Buddhist religious books and translate them into Burmese.

The original Murukan was a Child God.
India’s god-worshipping started with the Greeks. Indians changed the name of Alexander the Great to Arisandrabanu and worshipped him as a god whose name was later changed to Skanda or Iskanda.
Of course, the British made many intentional factual changes to Ceylon’s ancient history. I can give hundreds of examples.
Buddhism originated from Ceylon and it was the British in the 1900s who invented the story that Gothama (Sinhala Pali) or Gauthama (Sinhala Sanskrit) Buddha was born and lived in India. Buddhism was introduced to India by the Greeks. That’s why Indian architecture is called Greco-Buddhist architecture.

To CChampa Another interesting narrative which has some historical validity is that King Alexander, who conquered parts of Western India between 327 and 325 BCE. Alexander is known in Persian and in North Indian Languages as Iskanader He was deifed and so there are many shrines to Iskander –> Iskander–> Skandha. N. Gopala Pillai’s 1930s paper titled “Skanda: The Alexander Romance in India”, pointed out fascinating literary and iconographic parallels between the two, such as: both Alexander and Skanda are heavily associated with the spear/lance (Sakti). Alexander was famously depicted in Hellenistic coins with the horns of a ram (as the son of Zeus-Ammon, later giving rise to his Middle Eastern moniker Dhul-Qarnayn, “The Two-Horned”). Skanda is occasionally accompanied by a ram-headed vehicle or goat imagery in early northern Indian folklore. However, the name Skandha is in the Chandogya Upanishad (the 8th and 6th centuries BCE—long before Alexander or even the Buddha).
