Leaderless Tamils & Floundering Causes

By Eelaventhan Manickavasakar

Eelaventhan Manickavasakar

Eelaventhan Manickavasakar

Tamils who once ruled the entire country, later ruled the Jaffna Kingdom and eventually lost it to European colonial invaders 114 years after the Sinhalese lost theirs. The 1948 Ceylon independence opened the door to the loss of language rights; land ownership rights, employment rights and more. Earlier the first blow fell on the plantation Tamils depriving them of their citizenship and voting rights and thereby reducing Tamil representation in parliament by eliminating 7 seats which weakened the cause of all Tamils. The 1st mile post was the Sinhalese Only Act of 1956, with the agenda of a Sinhala-Buddhist state in mind fed by Mahavamsa tales. This process has been methodically continuing since then and still continues unhindered with the Tamil leaders taken for a ride either falling for self-glory or reposing too much trust on the guiles and vileness of Sinhala politicians and leaders whose rivalry has been to capture power using the Tamils as sacrificial lambs and convenient tools.

It is not necessary to list the betrayals and breaches of mutual trust, centering around the various pacts, agreements, accords and promises dished out by the past Sinhala governments and their leaders including, leftist leaders who preached equality and then fell for the plums of office and power, while abandoning their just slogans.

Sampanthan and SumanthiranAdding insult to injury, some opportunistic self-interested Tamil politicians also lent their support to the Sinhala governments to enrich themselves, thus endorsing and allowing the governments programs launched against the Tamils. Sensing the threat, Tamils launched their campaign for self-rule from 1924 initiated by Sir Pon Arunachalam. Then came the 50/50 demand by G.G. Ponnambalam who succumbed to the wiles of D.S. Senanayake leading to the rise of S.J.V Chelvanayakam who resisted the Sri Lankan moves targeting the Tamils. His non-violent campaign was also crushed with brutal force. SJV also trusted the Sinhala leadership, Banda and Dudley but as expected, he was betrayed and died leaving the destiny of Tamils in the “hands of God”. S.J.V also lamented the absence of a Tamil Jinnah in an interview with the BBC. Tamils backed the firebrand Amirthalingam who also fell victim to the crafty Sinhala leadership and abandoned the causes of Tamil Eelam, and even federalism.

The dismal achievements of past Tamil leaders fed the growth of militancy among the young Tamils. The result was the formation of many groups and organizations of Tamil youths competing with each other for leadership. LTTE emerged as the strongest and disciplined dominating the Tamil politics from 1978 to 2009. The armed struggle and guerilla tactics willy-nilly expanded to conventional war, which led to LTTE’s defeat backed by twenty-two countries who did not want a LTTE rule or a separate state. With the exit of LTTE, the TNA who were silently following LTTE’s fortunes emerged as the sole representatives of Tamils.

The end of the genocidal war in 2009 multiplied the miseries of Tamils who were left with hoards of issues and plethora of problems needing swift and acceptable permanent solutions, some of which are the presence of 150,000 strong army, non-return of illegally appropriated civilian lands, fate of 1000 of disappearances, Buddhist bigotry, Sinhalisation, displacements, loss of usual occupations and livelihood, mental and physical traumas, release of political prisoners including the lack of a political solution.

Tamils chose TNA and relied on TNA to take up these issues vigorously and aggressively including accountability and justice viewing their open support to Maithiri-Ranil combination. However, the performance and record of TNA in tackling or solving the said burning issues has been almost dismal and depressing. The omissions and commissions of TNA are:

  • It failed to press and demand international investigation into war crimes, crimes against humanity etc.
  • Failed and abandoned the causes including immediate release of all Tamil prisoners.
  • Inaction and failure on the question of reduction of Army personnel in the North and East.
  • Sluggish approach to restore the seized lands to the rightful owners, and leaving the agitation in the hands of the affected.
  • Carefree attitude to ensure a speedy resettlement and rehabilitation to the displaced thousands.
  • A lukewarm attitude towards the humanitarian issue of thousands of disappeared, leaving the grief stricken families to find their own ways and options.
  • No concrete political proposal or plan of action as yet to solve the 60 year old ethnic problem.
  • Nil action towards the effective functioning of the Northern Provincial Council, like powers over land and police.
  • Not enforcing the provisions of Official language in the North and East to ensure the use of Tamil language for all state businesses and communications.
  • Failing to sustain and maintain a determined stand to the participation of foreign Judges, Lawyers etc., in the proposed internal special tribunal, to be set up in the future, while supporting this procedure.
  • Failing to project a united TNA front thus exposing disunity with contradicting statements and conflicting stands thus weakening the causes of Tamils before the UN and International community.
  • Placing undue trust and confidence on the Sinhala leadership, not mindful of the past sixty years bitter experiences of political betrayals and breaches of oral and written pacts, and still nourishing with hopes and trust.

In the end, Tamils are now slowly descending to the position of political orphans without leadership and searching for directions for a clearly laid out programme of action, to solve those issues of life and death.

The need of the hour is a strong willed and dynamic leadership and not a submissive and docile one, as being experienced now. A leadership to lead the people and mobilize them to agitate for the just rights and justice, and not a leadership abandoning the struggles and leaving the leadership to the affected to decide the options and find their own ways and means.

Hopes of Tamils on UN and Human Rights Council to deliver justice and haul up Sri Lanka also appear to be waning after the recent visit of HRC commissioner Hussein who appear to have fallen to the mesmerisms of Sri Lanka’s power wielding persons. He is now insisting on justice from the Sri Lankan judicial system, which he earlier roundly condemned as untrustworthy.

Besides, the much talked and expected political solution will surely be relegated viewing the current political divide among the ruling partners including Ministers, UNP- SLFP rivalry jockeying for popular support to boost their electoral fortunes the mounting cost of living allegations of corruption, nepotism and restrictions on media are some issues which will derail the reconciliation process including even a new constitution.

The reinstated singing of national anthem in Tamil which is allowed in the constitution, the appointment of a gentleman Governor to Northern Provincial Council, the appointment of a Tamil Chief Justice, who is otherwise eligible due to seniority, the appointment of a Tamil Governor to the Central Bank, who happens to be a Tamil friend of Ranil are all just sops and deceptive cosmetic gestures to placate the international community but carrying no weight or fundamental changes in the position on the traumatized suffering Tamils, longing to live as equal citizens with dignity and self-respect.

A lengthy, distorted history of Tamils in Sri Lanka and all blame attributed to Sinhalese for the failures of Tamils and their dumb witted leaders. The root cause of the failure of Tamils is their greed for political power that will place them above the Sinhalese. Tamil Racism and Hatred for the Sinhalese has not them anywhere.

Instead of ruling over territory, why not preside over the field of EDUCATION? Tamil Diaspora considered as one body can command $ billions for the purpose of establishing a UNIVERSITY of renown. If we are worth our mettle, let us think of it. Let our thoughts be ennobling.

Talking about delusion, there are those who secretly believe that the Tamils ruled not just the Indian sub-continent but the whole world.
Some even declare that all languages of the world came out of Tamil. (Do not be surprised if I am challenged for doubting this.)

Fiction is the main ingredient of that ‘national’ histories are made of. And where will nations be without delusions of grandeur?

Please ignore all Tamil claims to greatness as we do with Sinhala/Buddhists claims.

The problem is that Tamils are not alone when it comes to grand delusions. Their Sinhalese brothers too have been suffering from delusion of mythical proportion.

For instance Champika genuinely believes his ancestors discovered zero, Sinhala is much much much older than Hebrew, and his relatives believe his ancestors were the first to use genetic engineering to cross a beast and beauty about 2500 years ago to produce a a special race with Sinha Le.

Tamils believe they enjoyed sovereignty before the arrival of Portuguese and the Sinhalese believe this island is a sovereign state.

See how deluded these two people are.

Don’t blame Tamils or Sinhalese, grand delusion is in their gene similar to their generally shared stupidity.

The Murukan kovil at Katharagama and Muneshwaram in Chilaw where the Sinhalese flock like cattle to worship and the Vishnu kovil at Devinuwara are Tamil products. Dr. R. L. Brohier in ‘Discovering Ceylon,’ says, “a tank in Hambantota now called Magama wewa, was in ancient days known as “Pandikulam”, while even Dr. S. Mr.Manicavasagar

I completely agree with you. The Tamils do not have a strong willed and dynamic leadership let alone a genuine and sincere leadership. There won’t be anyone now or in the future. Sometimes I think that a Sinhalese person with a goodwill towards the Tamils could lead the Tamil people. It is a pipe dream of mine when I think of an alternative to our unscrupulous leadership and as I feel the Tamils have been led down and have no place in Sri Lanka as they have to live as second class citizens. I remember once Mr.Sarath Fonseka said that the Tamils have to accept what is given and not ask for more. The TNA members have miserably failed the Tamil community for their own selfish interests. It is disgusting, annoying when one wonders as to why this is happening to the Tamil community. Why should the 21 prisoners languish in prisons for such a long time? Why should the people of Vali North live in camps forgoing their ownership of their private lands. The culture and the demography of the North that existed will not appear again.

Certainly Tamils don’t have leaders. Creating leaders is important as much as amending the constitution, dealing with political prisoners, missing persons and PTA. I have completed six months living in Jaffna. Based on my findings still Indians and the Westerners are thinking for Tamils. It has been very disappointing reality to me. Tamils can have more freedom when they start to think for themselves. If we give them more than what they deserve, it will be used against innocent people. We can’t afford to let it happen again, especially after three decades of brutal civil war.

Tamils want more freedom and power so the foreign powers can take advantage of it. Those days LTTE’s camps were the darkest place; now days TNA member organization’s offices including Ilangkai Thamizh Arasuk Kadchi’s office, Uthayan newspaper office and Jaffna University are the darkest places, and the foreign powers’ propaganda machines to impose foreign interests. The West and India have got a firm grip on Tamil leaders. Tamils can’t think for themselves; therefore, I would not advocate for more power for Tamils, until they have a decent think tank and start to think for themselves.

I feel sorry for those political prisoners. Because nobody is there to guide them. Therefore, releasing those political prisoners may backfire on the government; if they are released without a decent rehabilitation programme. The Tamil leaders must be blamed for those political prisoners’ suffering, not the government or the defense forces. Not only the Sri Lankan government, but the entire Asia must watch the Tamil leaders very carefully.

I also would like to stress the importance of allowing diaspora to contest an election. It will unite the people otherwise it will continue to create division. The West is so powerful and knowledgeable, it can implement its strategy very skilfully. It doesn’t have to depend on diaspora. The war is over and diaspora is a toothless tiger. Now the West can’t achieve that much through diaspora. Therefore, the West is intruding as the leaders of human rights and partners of development projects in order to impose its interests. So many NGOs are here than ever before. The West is throwing money through the NGOs to expand its soft power, especially to isolate China in order to dominate the Indian Ocean.

Before 1950, the Madras state was a Tamil state. Later it split into Kerala,Andhra and Kannada segments going separately.similarly the Sinhala speaking people split from the Tamil rule centuries ago. Sinhalese did not descend from the sky.The bridge between Tamil Nadu and Sl was there in the 14th century. The DNA of both Sinhala and Tamils are the same. It is stupid to quarrel about these details. what is important is the Sinhala-Buddhist must stop their intolerance to the minorities and start believing in equal rights.

Back room deals with corrupt, self serving Sinhala politicians who are viciously devided and at each other’s throats for power OR manupiliating outsiders to twist the hands of the power wielders at a given point of time OR terrorism targeted at innocent masses are obviously not the means of acieving a solution to a ‘national problem’.

How come the Tamil political masters have been so bllind for 60 long years to the simple fact that behind the doors these basterds are promising things they are not empowered to deliver? And that “opposition” at a given point of time outnumber all minorities put together? In that sense Prabakaran was right in his decision to keep away from so called “elections” in the south.

When will my Tamil brothers sisters live with us as “equal citizens with dignity and self respect?” That is the day their political masters realise that they have been chasing a mirage of a “political” solution where none exist IN VIEW OF THE PRESENT DEMOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION PATTERN OF TAMIL SPEAKING PEOPLE (IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR RELIGION OR THE DATE OF ARRIVAL) IN THE ISLAND. The day they demand equality REGARDLESS of their ethnicity or religion, NOT separation BASED ON their ethnicity or religion. The day they fight along with us for our common problems arising out of capitalism sans democracy. The day they realise we all are on a small boat on a rough sea pulling us in the direction of population explosion and global environmental disaster.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that once diaspora returns and settles well, you would want to have your periodical cultural event organised such as looting, burning their houses and businesses, raping, murdering, … .

According to my Elders this was what exactly happened in 1983 at least to a few.

“My point was that, overall, those who will not reap the consequences of conflict are most at the forefront of promoting conflict”

Of course you will say this won’t you. Those who left this country had a very good reason to do so,.

The exodus didn’t start in 1983, it started just after 1956. As my Elders tell me there were Sinhalese, and Burghers too left the country in order to escape from Banda’s Pancha Maha Balavegaya ideology. They were followed by Tamils who were the victims of subsequent riots. Then there were youth who lost all hope of finding jobs in this island, including Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims.

Then the war, which pushed out the people who otherwise wouldn’t have left their habitats. Then there were Sinhalese and others who couldn’t, wouldn’t put up with nepotism, cronyism, impunity, thuggery, murder, …. left the island in despair.

Now revisit the history of this island and see for yourself, why this country has been unable to attract or retain the cream of the society.

Will you be able to invite the Sinhalese cream back to live and contribute to this island, leave alone the Tamil diaspora?

If the conditions are right people who were born, bred in this island will continue to love this country and contribute to it irrespective of their race, region or religion.

Don’t fool yourself with your sense of perverted history and reasoning.

You should work hard to entice those who left this island by creating the right conditions and give them confidence rather than your dated divisive rhetoric.

I want people of any identity to return voluntarily and will in whatever possible way act to encourage it. But I am small fry.
Yet that does not deny me the right to my views.

What I object to is narrow nationalist hypocrisy, call it chauvinist hypocrisy if you choose, that makes some who live abroad with no desire to return (probably even after conditions change) to promote causes here, whose furtherance will only affect those living here.

I have seen it during the war, and see it now. I do not exempt any kind of narrow nationalist– S, T or M.

Just forget about what TNA demands or does not demand, my demand is that since both Sinhala and Tamils share their gene with Tamil Nadu Tamils, both should go back to Tamil Nadu and live with dignity, rather than a race descended from Kallathoni colonizers.

It wouldn’t be a problem for India as they had received millions of Tamils from Burma, Sri Lanka and settled them down in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

How many zeros are there in a million? Indians often confuse between the lakh (10**5), crore (10**7) and million (10**6).

To many an Indian historian an extra zero or two at the end of a number matters little. (I guess that they have the right to use it liberally, as it was Indians who invented it.)

True to form Manickavasakar is recycling his old and moth eaten empty rhetoric. He is like the fox which lost its tail and told the other foxes to cut their tails too. M.K. was a TNA nominated MP in parliament for 3 years thanks to the generosity of the LTTE leader and now he turns around and blames the same party and the same leaders he was once a part. The sad story is as a parliamentarian he earned a name as a joker. Taking part in the budget debate in parliament in 2006 he claimed the next budget speech he will make is at the Tamil Eelam parliament meeting in Trincomalee. After making such ridiculous and pompous statement with reckless arrogance he is now desperately tooth and nail fighting his deportation to Sri Lanka by making one appeal after another to stay put. This is a monumental disgrace. By denigrating the elected leaders of the TNA he is not only making an ass of himself, but insulting the people who overwhelmingly voted for TNA in every election from 2010 onwards. In 2010 the TNA polled only 233,190 (2.9%) winning 14 seats. In 2015 the same TNA more than double its popular vote by polling 515, 963 4.62%) and winning 16 seats. M.K. stood on his head and went around like a headless chicken in Toronto asking people not to support the TNA and instead to vote for TNPF led by another discredited politician Gajendrakumar. And predictably Gajendrakumar’s party lost deposit in all the 7 electorates it contested a repeat performance like 2010.
Truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it and ignorance
may deride it, but, in the end, there it is.” – Sir Winston Churchill

After reading the above comments, no wonder, the above idiots are making another Prabhakaran.Sinhalese are the only majorities in the world scared of the minority Tamils. Sinhalese believing on the childish storis beginning from the arrival of a sinha man out of cross between an animal and a woman, and the idiotic budhist monks fanning the racist rehetorics made the LTTE.Enough is enough. Stop all the racist thinkings. Let us live in harmony and keep our motherland as a united Sri lanka.

If you want to live in harmony, your words should reflect that wish.
Hurling abuse at any race is not the way to express a wish to ‘live in harmony’.

If both Sinhalese and Tamils stopped abusing each other both races would perish.
