Liberator Becoming A Monster

By Mahendra De Silva –

Today Sri Lankans who are living abroad watch with sadness and anger what is happening in our country. Whenever I meet Sinhalese Buddhist Rajapakse supporters they ridiculed me for expressing my views about Sri Lanka. They say that one should come to the county to understand the developments taking place.  They talk of new roads, sky rise buildings, overhead bridges, luxury cars and also the cleanliness of Colombo city. According to them very soon Sri Lanka will be far ahead of Singapore When I ask about freedom and level of democracy, media freedom in the country they again get excited. What freedom? When Tamil Tigers were killing our people daily, did you talk about freedom? We all lived in fear. How many innocent people were killed by Tiger bombs, in trains, busses and everywhere? No one talked about our democracy and freedom then. It is Rajapakses who saved us from a disaster. None of the other leaders, JR, Chandrika, and Premadasa could not save us. We have to worship Rajapakses for saving our country. They deserve to rule the country for generations. –  I have come across even highly educated and intelligent Sinhalese professionals who subscribed to this viewpoint. It appears that this regime can continue for generations to come even if it becomes a total dictatorial state like North Korea so long as mentality and attitude of majority Sinhalese Buddhists remains same in tolerating injustices of Rajapakse regime.

At least now the Sinhalese Buddhists should understand the damage happening to our county under the present corrupt leadership.

I was thinking to myself the rationality of this argument in support of Rajapakses which is quite prevalent with Sinhalese ordinary people. It is a fact that ruthlessness of Rajapakses had a positive effect in completely eliminating Tiger menace from Sri Lanka temporally. But Sri Lanka had to pay a huge price in terms of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians who had to sacrifice their lives in Vanni during last stages of the war and adverse publicity Sri Lanka received. War could still have won more respectably if they were little sensitive to human casualties. But brutality of the way it was conducted damaged the reputation of Sri Lanka as well as Sinhalese who are known as peace loving followers of Lord Buddha. Further War Crime charges were repeatedly made against the Armed forces who made a great sacrifice to liberate the country. In my view we could have minimized the damage to great extent if the Sri Lankan Rulers of the day acted intelligently. A good leader, who has all the powers needed to make a difference to other people’s lives, should have understood the sufferings of Tamil people due to decades of war. How great it would have been for Sri Lanka if Rajapakse made use of the golden opportunity he got to unite the country.  His heart should have felt for the over hundred thousand refugees in camps in Vanni.   If he was intelligent enough first thing MR should have done after the war was to admit that innocent civilians were lost in the war.  If there were claims of misconduct or war crimes a proper enquiry should have been made, and culprits punished.  A rapid compensation and settlement process should have taken place immediately after the war. Instead of wasting billions of dollars to build unproductive ports and airport at places like Hambantota or creating airlines in his own name like Mihin Air, wasting billions of public money,   an intelligent ruler would have spent that money to develop North and East ruined by war and also to uplift the morale of Tamil people who had lost everything in their procession due to war.  It is natural that they would harbor an ill will towards Sri Lankan government for what has been happening there. Goodwill gestures by government would have done a huge attitude change in Tamils within the country as well as diaspora outside Sri Lanka. Our Buddhist priests and Sinhalese ordinary people should have been the forefront in refugee camps helping Tamil people who lost everything due to the war. Act of Kindness by Buddhist priests and Sinhalese towards Tamils would have done much more to spread Buddha’s message across North and East, than building Buddha statues and temples all over Northern peninsula. Even the war crimes charges and the very bad publicity Sri Lanka and Sinhalese Buddhists received after the war would have been minimised if Sir Lankan government took concrete steps to achieve real national reconciliation and rebuilding of war-torn territories.  Rajapakse would have been hailed like Nelson Mandela, if he acted as a statesman at least after the war. If he worked towards winning hearts and minds of all the people including Tamils after the war, Rajapakses could have stayed in power easily without having to do all the bad things he does today to stay in power.

Again coming back to the rationality of the argument that Rajapakse’s can do anything because they liberated the country from Tamil Tigers, counter argument could be made that if someone saves a another from a disaster in order to pay gratitude is it necessary to allow liberator the liberty to do anything as he likes to the victim.? In Sri Lanka the liberator who saved the county from the clutches of Tiger monster is turning to be a monster. Liberator has shut down the free media in the country. Liberator has killed, harmed or chased away any one challenging his decisions. Remains of democracy and independence of judiciary which have been still surviving in the country is to be taken out completely. Liberator has eliminated any opposition in the Parliament by buying out Parliamentarians by offering lucrative deals using public funds. Parliament has become a rubber stamp of Rajapakse, who has ensured a Parliament with his clowns who would do anything for him. He is also in the process of buying members of judiciary with various bribes. Liberator would try to attack people who do not bow down to his wishes or try to work according to their consciousness.  Liberator would take revenge from people who becomes a threat or likely to be a threat to him   with fictitious or made up criminal proceedings. Best example was former army commander Sarath Fonseka or present CJ, Shirani Bandaranayke. Liberator will ensure that all his die-hard followers and admirers are protected from the arm of law irrespective of whatever they do. Liberator has released rapists, murders and drug dealers from criminal proceedings because they are his supporters.

Rajapakse supporters who boast about Sri Lanka becoming a Singapore, does not realize although democracy is restricted in Singapore, one thing certainly happening is the rule of law applying to everyone equally. After former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew left his office after making Singapore one of the greatest and rich countries in the world, he did not  appoint his son or a relative  to be his successor. Corruption is lowest in Singapore compared to rest of Asia. Can anyone believe Sri Lanka becoming a Singapore with the level of corruption, nepotism, and indiscipline rulers of present day Sri Lanka?

At least now the Sinhalese Buddhists should understand the damage happening to our county under the present corrupt leadership. They should realise that democracy we enjoyed under British rule and post-independence governments all this time is in last stages today. Are they allowing the liberator to continue to undermine our traditional values, rule of law, independence of judiciary and a public service? Are we allowing liberator to use the police and armed forces as his private army. Are we allowing liberator’s puppets to be the judges of Supreme Court and other courts?  We also should remember that birth of another Prabakaran is not far away if we alienate Tamils the way we do now and the birth of another Wijeweera if the Liberator runs the country this way. The mentality that Sri Lanka belongs to only Sinhalese Buddhists should be done away in modern 21st century. Treating everyone equally irrespective of community or religion is an accepted norm of a democratic country. Devolution of power and allowing people in a particular region to take its own decisions on administrative, development matters is also a recognized component of democracy. Because of foolish communal minded Sinhalese politicians SriLanka had to suffer from communal disharmony and violence and unrest among minorities. At least now we should learn from past experience that real peace is possible only when there is communal harmony and satisfaction among all communities. We should realise that one of the culprits of present day unruly behavior of governing politicians is the monster constitution which gives unlimited powers to the President. These powers would make even a good man an evil dictator.  Even if we change the present rulers very soon we will find the new rulers would make use of the huge executive powers vested in the Executive President fully to continue the same path of dictatorial rule. Politicians promise to change the constitution when they come to power, but when they get the taste of power, they do  want to continue to enjoy it and make as much as personal gains, not only to themselves but also to their generation. Therefore the most important task would be to make sure that whoever takes over power again do it under a new democratic constitution model with full of safeguards to protect Sri Lanka from corrupt politicians in future.

Rajapassa was never a liberator – he and his brother Gota the White Van Goon are murderers and war criminals with the blood of Lasantha Wickramatunge and Pradeep Ekneligoda among thousands on their hands.. The defeat of the monster Prabakaran meant that the other monster – Rajapassa was fully enthroned in Lanka. Rajapakssa is a crude, uncouth and uneducated common thief of public assets and Tsunami funds..
Gota the white van Goon has been militarizing the county to protect against regime change but today the NEW WAR in Lanka is clear – the people versus the Rajapakse dictatorship
Gota – be careful what you wish for.
YOU WANT ANOTHER WAR?! WELL YOU GOT IT MAN.
THE MOTHER OF ALL BATTLES TO SAVE LANKAN VALUES FROM THE RAJAPASSA DICTATORSHIP COME 2013!

Those who condemn the Govt for defeating the brutal LTTE that deprived human rights to those who did not subscribe to the LTTE’s brutal doctrine, are trying to “Have the cake and eat the cake at the same time”
Yes they enjoy the peace dividends in the country but they also join the forces hostile to the architects of this peace just to get cheap popularity, together with the other elitists. I think these critics should stop wasting their energy and instead nominate the LTTE for the Nobel Peace Prize. After all the EU received it this year, after the brutal invasion of Libya and setting up a puppet regime in that country, which is now suppressing the human rights of the libyan people. Prabakaran and the LTTE did this mainly to the Tamil population in the North for decades and could be qualified to receive this prize.

Premadasa & JR could certainly done better than the present fellows.
Rajapaksa could not have done it then in the 80’s & 90’s for sure.

Political struggle is yet on, only the military won
Tigers were militarily compitent, not politics; Rajiv Gandi
Cannot confuse military and political sucess.

Politicians with no military experience (like Castro) cannot be credited for military sucess, as educational, medical or sports sucess cannot be credited to those not actively in that field.

To win a war with respectability? And respect terrorists who wrecked Sri Lanka for 3 decades. If not for the President standing against the whole west today Sri Lanka would be under the gum-boots of the terrorists. Did the LTTE have any respect for the tamils whom they said they were fighting for.Children as young as 10 were trained as combatants. How many Tamil national had been killed and then on top of that Rajiv Gandhi.

Did the Americans have respect for the innocent Vietnamese or when they bombed Hiroshima.Mahendra wake up !

Americans bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki to make Japanese surrender, but after the war was over they did not occupy Japan and cause hardship to the Japanese. They helped Japan to recover to become an economic Giant today, technologically number one state in Asia and challenging the west. Similarly Americans bombed Vietnam and still lost the war. But they never carried any hatred. Had Vietnam shed the communist path, it would have become rich like other ASEAN states.
In Srilanka, the situation is different. Sinhala army is still occupying the Tamil homelands terrorizing Tamil people living there. There is no justice to the Tamil people with people being killed and going missing. Tamil areas will develop only if it is ruled by Tamils themselves for which they have been fighting for, which if the Sinhala dominated government does not accommodate within a united Srilnaka, there will be no option for Tamils to go for independence.

        Raja,
I would say something to ur comments. Don’t think this injustice only for Tamil people. After 1948 country governed by majority Sinhalese. Do U think that majority Sinhalese doesn’t have any problems as Tamil people? Its a joke. All Sri lankans are suffering same sort of problems. Do not try to isolate this only to Tamil people. Compare metros and rural. In metros no question abt Tamil or Sinhalese Muslims Or other… But in rural areas its common for all.
Police or amy can deploy anywhere in the country with justification. But not for individuals requirements.

I fully agree with you, but why are we Sinhalese and Tamils not doing anything about it and VOTING for the same type of rubble politicians to make us suffer over and over again and again.

        • 0
          0

I do not agree with you. Even in the field of economic problems Tamils face additional disadvantage in education and employment. Currently 94% of the government jobs are held by Sinhalese with hardly any Tamil as a head of a department. No major capital project was undertaken in northern province since 1953 and any capital projects undertaken in eastern province since independence was solely to settle Sinhalese from other provinces in order to alter the demographic pattern.
If you do not accept that Tamils are facing problems due to their ethnicity, how can you ever bring justice. No Sinhalese have ever faced a race riot organised by the government where they were killed in large numbers and property destroyed. Since the release of Sarath Fonseka there is no Sinhalese political prisoner in the jails while there are a number of Tamils in jail, most of whom have no charges filed against them.
Sinhalese are politically victimized, but when their party comes to power they get compensated in terms of promotions and money. Recently government paid compensation to Sinhalese July 1980 strikers, but none of the Tamils who suffered dismissals and deferment of promotions due to lack of proficiency in Sinhalese language since 1956 have ever been compensated.
You may deploy police or army anywhere, but you have to deploy Tamil police and army in northern and eastern provinces and not Sinhalese army or policemen, who have a record of terrorizing Tamils and escaping punishment due to a biased judicial system. Tamils suffer in silence when they come into a conflict with any Sinhalese as they are frightened to even report it to Police.
Tamils want to rule themselves without any interference from others with full legislative, executive and judicial powers like what Sinhalese are enjoying. Tamils want a legislature where they will be the majority and enact laws and implement them. They want this empowerment to entire Tamil homelands of northern and eastern province where their writ will be supreme and not that of any legislatures controlled by Sinhalese.
Please ask your government and racist Sinhalese to stop talking about devolving powers to village councils and creating a senate which will again be a Sinhalese majority one with callous regard to the legitimate rights of Tamils.

          Ruwan

“Do U think that majority Sinhalese doesn’t have any problems as Tamil people?”

Of course they do. Its not a joke. These problems are serious ones. I have myself stated this fact many times over. How did they manage to create so much problem for themselves and others?

Since 1948 it was the majority community that formed each and every government.

The majority Sinhalese elected their MP’s and formed the governments.

Ministries that were considered to be important were filled by majority community.

Nation building process was under the control of Majority community and almost all key posts in the Administrative Service were manned by Sinhalese since 1956.

The Majority community went further and introduced Sinhala only language policies which denied equal opportunities to other minorities.

Sinhalese were very happy to reclaim the island for themselves. The 1947 and 1948 Immigration act made atleast 900,000 hard working people stateless.

Since 1946 active land grapping tilted the demograpghy in favour of the Sinhalese.

Armed forces and Police were turned into exclusively Sinhala services.

Equal opportunities were denied to minorities in the North and East.

After all these achievements what are you mourning about?

          The minorities did not

          elect the governments,
          appoint civil servants,
          manned the armed forces,
ordered the armed forces to kill their own people
          run the state,
          Colonise the state land
Ethnically cleansed up country Tamils, Malayalis and Pakistanis

Above all they were not party to policy making or for that matter implementation.

Sinhalese encouraged their armed forces to kill their own people and the minorities. Or kept quiet when killing went on since 1971.

The day Sinhalese own up their mistakes it would be the beginning of a new era.

Since they are born stupid like their Tamil brothers there won’t be new era for a considerable time. May be in about 2500 years.

You have a choice now. Pass a Chinese only official language act, and lease the whole country to China. The Chinese may help you to make the great leap forward.

In Colombo only 24 per cent of the population are Sinhalese. The rest are mostly Tamils and the others Muslims. The Tamils can go to any part of Sri Lanka and live or buy property. But the Tamils claim that the North is only for the Tamils. Why so?
The army is not only in the North but also in other parts of the country. Raja you should make a trip to the North and see the devlopment projects that are going through. There is no recruitment of Children as combatants. They go to school .

while sinhalese can claim that tamils are by default majority in capital city of colombo.but colombo is in the heartland of sinhalese majority provinces.it is a capital city and cosmopolitan.but sinhalese have to understand one thing tamils belong to north and east which is their traditional homeland.traditional homeland concept is there world wide.for example kashmir valley in india, quebec in canada, kurds of eastern turkey and northern iraq.these homelands are to be protected because the culture of the people living there are interwined with the land.problem in srilanka is sinhalese are paranoid about north and east.what if tamil provinces once becomes integrated secedes unilaterally.i dont think it is possible in a world in which we live sinhalese need to shed their paranoid mindset or else in a globalised world it will result in further marginalisation of srilanka.sinhalese buddhist who speak glowingly of colombo’s high rises, clean streets, flyovers have to realise that those white elephants were built with borrowed money.chickens will come home to roost one day but fortunately they will not be alive to shoulder the burden.

This man Sumanasekera must be getting a pittance of that , LOOT we are all talking about. Who wants development with out freedom? What Ruwan says is so true, look at the massacre in the Welikeda prison. All people in the country are afraid to open their mouths , like in, Sadham Hussiains Iraq. They are taken in white vans. Getting beaten up by thugs,
They even have the army ,running hotels, Canteens, etc even roads are now swept by the army. So it is all over the country. There is no longer any dignity working for the Army.
Another thing is Sumanasekera must understand legitimate governments do not, behave like terrorists. So obviously there should not be any , talk of child recruitment .

Sinhalese may be only 24% in Colombo, but they are controlling it. Only Buddhists have the right to put up statues or vihares anywhere. Can Hindus, Muslims or Sinhalese Christians do it. Army may be in other parts, but the concentration of Army to civilians is much higher in particularly Northern province and also in Eastern province, where they are interfering into civilian rule.
Tamils are not interested in these slipshod development projects. They want self rule first. All these development can take place under their rule. They want the Police to be under their command and want an armed forces which will not come into conflict with their rule be stationed in their areas. They want the land of their ancestors to be under their jurisdiction so that they can prevent any alteration to cultural or demographic pattern.
Even the development you are talking about is mainly for Sinhalese. While thousands of Tamils are without houses, government is building houses to settle Sinhalese to alter the demographic pattern. Tamils are being prevented to return to their original lands under the bogus security reason, while Sinhalese families are being settled in them. Tamil fishermen are being prevented to do fishing but Sinhala fishermen from other provinces are being permitted to fish.

          Gamini says:

“Tamils are illegal migrants from Toiletnadu where they die in starvation.”

So are the Sinhalese from ancient Tamilaham and Sinhapura in Venga.

          You say:

“This is Srilanka (Sihala Deepaya)belongs to Sinhala Peoples.”

          What nonsense?

This island once belonged to my ancestors.

We don’t want both people in my ancestral land.

I am trying to contact Buddha to come back to this island. He has a very important to do, cleanse the island second time around so that we can get rid of the Sinhalese and Tamils who posses polluted mind.

Re: If not for the President standing against the whole west today Sri Lanka would be under the gum-boots of the terrorists.

A: True. Instead Sri Lanka is today under the gum-boots of the president and his family, who are all under the gum boots of China.

Re: Did the LTTE have any respect for the tamils whom they said they were fighting for.

      A: Nope.

Re: Did the Americans have respect for the innocent Vietnamese or when they bombed Hiroshima.

      A: Nope.

Conclusion: In summary, according to Mr Samaraweera, the Sinhalese Buddhists are the same as the Tamil Tigers and Americans.

To be honest, how can one argue with that conclusion by Mr. Samaraweera? I agree with him!

Sad really. One would think those who are influenced by the teachings of the Buddha would act wiser than others. But then, one would think the same of those who follow teachings of the likes of Jesus as well…

Conclusion: All religions/ races of human being are equally pathetic and self-righteous.

I do not know whether this man is livng in the west . He says Lee Kwan Yu did not hand over the presiedncy to his son . Wrong again . Lee kwng yu did APPOINT HIS SON TO BE HIS succesor . I met a young girl from Singapore in a bus in Vietnam and she casually mentioned this . In fact she did not oppose this . In SL such action would have resulted in a revolution. The same in North Korea where the son is now in charge of the country after his fathers death .Have these two countries suffered in any way ? I dont think so . Also he has not visited the North and the east where there is so much of development going on, Where there was no infra structure due to the LTTE there are new roads taking shape . New Buildings , schools . shops .hospitals have all sprung up . This only shows the authors ignorance of the facts.Yes I agree with the expats . Mahinda and co deserves to serve the country for years to come as they have accomplished what no other President has ever done .

        Kumudini

Re: ‘The same in North Korea where the son is now in charge of the country after his fathers death .Have these two countries suffered in any way ?’

In Singapore there is a dictatorship that uses economics to keep resistance down. I believe the Chinese are trying to follow a similar model, where they try and provide the masses with improved standards of living, in exchange for power. However this does not mean the people have freedoms such as the right to openly criticize or challenge their leaderships. Essentially what this means is that if you ever happen to come up against the leadership (say they rape a family member) – you just have to sit back and say, oh well, at least we have a nice house and car and a motorway to drive it on… Of course the number of people who have to experience these atrocities are generally limited, to which extent, the masses continue to ignore them, and enjoy the perks, until of course after a few decades when things get out of control – like with the Husein family!

As for North Korea, it is one of the most dire parts of the world to live in. The dictatorship there simply uses the military to remain in power. There is no improvement in people’s standards of living. And there are no freedoms.

The dictatorship that is growing in Sri Lanka is a result of insecurity amongst the leadership who know if they ever lose power, they will have to face up to many truths that they currently brush under the carpet. To this extent, the dictatorship currently growing in Sri Lanka is most likely to be similar to that in North Korea than in Singapore.

All dictators build infrastructure. Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, and even teh Kim’s of North Korea. Do you know much about the Ghost Building of North Korea? Look it up.

Sri Lanka is a multicultural island with a majority claiming to be ‘Buddhists’. Buddhism teaches detachment and compassion, and the importance of realising the truth. Any region where a majority of the people would be open to the teachings of Buddhism could not have the pathetic history of Sri Lanka’s past 64 years of ‘independence’. To that extent, Sri Lanka is just another land, with extremely ignorant, selfish and short-sighted people.

You just sit back and enjoy the short-term perks of the growing dictatorship. Just know that your future generations will one day curse you for allowing such movements the freedom to set-up in their country…

Tamils in north and east were happier under LTTE than now. They considered them as saviours and they were in fact. Sinhalese supported Mahinda for murdering innocent Tamils. Murdering is wrong in Budhhism except when it is Tamils. Unfortuantely for Sinhalese the same Tamil-Muderous Hero is becoming National Muderer.

From your statement it is clear that there is little difference between you and the people that you are so against. You can see the flaws in your opposition, but not the same flaws in you. I don’t blame you – you are no different to most human beings…

There is nothing in this write-up for me to disagree. An excllent one and this is 100% true and the real situation in a very concise way. Living abroad, I too know the mentality of the Sri Lankans around me especially the Sinhalese Buddhists who worship Rajapakses without realizing that the war was won due to the strategies of Gen. Fonseka of course with the full political support. Here, we shouldn’t forget that Rajapakses bribed the LTTE heavily to win the Presidential Elections by stopping all the Tamil votes in the North and those monies were used by the LTTE to kill our own soldiers and civilians. Rajapakses also continued the Cease-fire Agreement of RW but when Sripathy and Mangala came out with the facts of the LTTE bribe, Sripathy was killed in a very mysterious way like the two uni-students whose bike crashed to a lamp post but were killed prior to the accident. As a cover-up to the LTTE bribe, Rajapakses started attacking ruthlessly the LTTE to win the hearts of the majority Sinhalese for them to think “how can they bribe the LTTE if they are attacking like this”. It worked due to the dedicated efforts of our armed personnel. These Rajapakses ran away during the war and became the Saviours of Sri Lanka after the war was won. However, some credit should be given to them but not 100%. Anyway, economically the citizens are in a very bad state than during the time of the war. The citizens are becoming poorer and poorer whilst the rulers are becoming richer and richer by squeezing the citizens and looting the national wealth.

Mahendra – hats off for a wonderful article and you read my mind here.
As a non-resident Sri Lanakan professional, i do have a first class job in my adopted country with rule of law on paramount and democracy at its best.

But, Sri Lanka is the only country that I can say my motherland and wehre I belongs to and I was to think positively to return back once peace drawn and in 2009 I was the happiest person on earth with high hopes of returning back to my kith and kin.

All that vanished into the thin air in this 3 years with Rajapakshas trying to ruin the liberated country and you may find we Singhalese telling it should have been better when we had the War as what we have done is killed one monster called Prabhakaran and then createda mega-monster called Rajapaksha and it seems like withuut a Arab spring like peoples movement – Rajapakshas will do more harm than the so called Sun Goat did for 30 years.

Just see the Judiciary now, Rajapakshas want to have Kangaroo courts like the way Prabhakaran did in the Wanni and at least those in the Kangaroo courty got a fair trial compared to what the counrties first lady CJ got from the monster Rakapakshas.

Its time to open your eyes folks and STANDUP !!!

Now only he thinks of the Yakage Constitution. When JR Premadasa ruled with iron fist the UNP fellows were silent. Judges were stoned. CJ and 08 supreme court judges were removed over night.
It is UNP fellows in Parliament who said that CJs Husbalnd should be removed. Also the CJ. Now fellows are on the defence of CJ. What a comical set up.
If Constitution powers are used then there is no problem.
Now the UNP fellows say the constitution should be changed.

No body in their right minds would say this is right. Please remember JR was a monster, Premadasas did every thing that Rajapaksa is doing now ! Ina much bigger scale. So JR was wrong Premadasas was terrible, Rajapaksa now has surpassed all those monsters !
We keep hearing these ministers , when they want to cover up their sins saying “what happened with JR or Premadasas? But that was why they were chased out and these brought in , not to make the same mistakes on a larger scale

Re: But brutality of the way it was conducted damaged the reputation of Sri Lanka as well as Sinhalese who are known as peace loving followers of Lord Buddha.

Only the Sinhalese Buddhists believe they are peace loving followers of Lord Buddha. Similarly to all other short-sighted groups that use nationality or ethnicity or religion or a combination of those to identify with. All such people are ‘peace loving’ as long as peace is offered according to their rules. If not – war is chosen without hesitation as the brave and righteous option.

No country or religion or God that requires even a single person to die for it should be worth dying for! Humanity has been brainwashed by the propaganda of war mongers for thousands of years, who make going to war, or dying for their causes, glorious! As a result various human movements still fear what we don’t know (i.e. peace) – and continue to cling on to the only thing they do know (conflict and a magical day when peace will be gifted to them on a platter).

I read another note of Kusal Perera in his blog this week. As he points out we do not have an alternative for the present regime in either of main two parties which means that we need to find one outside of mainstream politics. Ranil who have recently jilmarted to change his party constitution to stay as party leader for another six years is also a dictator in waiting. The question is not just to change the regime, but to establish a long lasting secular democratic rule where none is above the rule of law.

The tragedy is that all this tyranny and corruption is going on in the name of Buddhism which is the most compassionate and merciful religons in the world. Rajapakses are quite adept at playing the religous and communal card to garner the support of the clergy and rural masses but their behaviour is quite contrary to the teachings of the Lord Buddha.

For Mahendra de Silva. the great majority who voted this President and support him are “Sinhala ordinary people “

    Here lies your problem buddy.

Because you guys read and write English perhaps you think you are a non “ordinary Sinhalese”.

Prabkaran ,Nadesan and Pottu Amman hiding among the civilians and 200,000 plus for that matter, and using them as a human shield until Blake, Solheim and Miilband landed the marines to rescue him is the fault of these “ordinary Sinhala people.

If the non ordinary Sinhalam were ruling the roost, Prabakaran would have been commanding the foot soldiers still ,but from a comfortable abode, abroad this time around.

Now that Mr Prabakaran is not around you should let these ordinary Sinhala people mind their own business.

However People who don’t even have a duel passport trying to change the regime to make these ordinary Sinhala people more comfortable and perhaps non ordinary sounds as a very charitable gesture.

      K.A Sumanasekera:

“Now that Mr Prabakaran is not around you should let these ordinary Sinhala people mind their own business.”

Of course we should. That will help the undemocratic state and its rulers to perpetuate what they think right for the ordinary Sinhala people, a never ending blood shed unleashed by the state to preserve its existence.

The only time the ordinary Sinhala people are expected to mind other people’s business is when the corrupt politicians demand their votes with all sorts of bribes, threats, promises never fulfilled, racist wars, racist rhetorics……..

Remember VP was the historical product of a undemocratic state. So was Rohana.

When IPKF invaded the island it was the elites who decided to support the LTTE and VP. The elites and the armed forces were hiding behind VP and LTTE. Ordinary Tamil people paid a heavy price.

When the Sri lankan forces went on hunting JVP hunting expedition it was the ordinary Sinhalese who paid a heavy price.

“until Blake, Solheim and Miilband landed the marines to rescue him”

Where did you get the idea that these people were planning to rescue the stupid VP and his LTTE? In fact they were there to ensure the anihilation of LTTE and its leaders.

If West & India had decided to save the LTTE and protect the Tamils from both the brutal SL forces and LTTE they would have used several tools in their diplomatic armoury to prevent war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by both waring parties.

Why did they support MR’s war on Tamil people? It is for you to find out.

So you reckon Prabakaran and Wijeeweera wanted to make Srilanka democratic?

The great majority of Sinhala inhabitants whom your mob refers to as “Ordinary Sinhala” are a lot smarter now than in the 70s and 80s.

Any chance of converting them to democracy by the JVP is well and truely over.

Unfortunately our Ordinary Tamil inhabitants were duped by Non Ordinary Tamils like Balasingham, with the express help and assistance of the ex Colonial masters.

The same colonials were pretty quick to to help Srilankan govts to finish off the JVP.

Yet when Prabakran was masscaring ordinay Sinhalese, the same Colonials provided Balasinghams to use their territiry to brag about the LTTE potency and generate more funds and more killings.

And it was allowed and encouraged for 30 years my friend.

Read the Island issues on the 12 Dec if you want to know about Blake, Solheim and Milliband.

          K.A Sumanasekera says:

“So you reckon Prabakaran and Wijeeweera wanted to make Srilanka democratic?”

Undemocratic state produced undemocratic foes in its mirror image. Nation building process was based essentially on racist ideas so were its opponents’ ideologies or lack of it.

          You naively say:

“Ordinary Sinhala” are a lot smarter now than in the 70s and 80s.”

I can see that from the quality of people they consistently elect and sustain their power bases, Mervyn, Weerawansa,…… to name a few. The quality of governance and respect for human rights stand witness to ordinary Sinhalese people becoming smarter by the second.

Your colonial masters were allowed to set foot in the island due Sinhala in fighting. They continued their rule and left the island when India fought and won independence. Tamils and Sinhalese still think the colonial masters were chased out by their struggle. How stupid can they be.

I am not privy to any information that confirm or deny whether Balasingam was indeed used by colonial masters. Definitely LTTE was sustained by India until 2005. You know why India wanted LTTE’s presence in Sri Lanka.

          You recommend :

“Read the Island issues on the 12 Dec if you want to know about Blake, Solheim and Milliband.

Come on I wouldn’t buy an ice cream from Island writers let alone a second hand car.

If you believe Island you would believe anything. Would you like to buy Taj Mahal I can arrange the deal?

Once again you have proven that not only Ordinary Sinhalese not growing smarter but the English speaking Sinhalese have chosen to remain irredeemably stupid. So are your Tamil brethren.

          Ado Samaraweera:
When you talk about Balasingham and the rest of the Tiger cadres how come you forgot to mention the LTTE Minister of Finance, KP: the man who executed 600 unarmed policemen after they surrendered, Colonel Karuna: the two “Masters” and Pillayan the baby-faced killer? Is it because they paid their way into complete safety in the government that you support? Speak up, man, we can’t hear you!

Some, really valuable thoughts, by Mahindra silva about Mahinda Rajapaksa,
MR was a reall hero along with Sf to give us the 2nd freedom in the history
Of Srilanka but as rightly pointed out here the precaution for the innocent Tamil civilians was at a very minimal and it was a very sad to see the suffering of the innocent Tamil civilians. There are black sheeps in every community whether Tamil,Muslim or Sinhalese but the whole Tamils community had to suffer..
Now the cj episode is very clear evidence of dictorial family rule in Sri Lanka, over night she became a bad lady?
    MR ” May koi Yanne”

I believe GOSL did their best to minimize civilian casualties. SL army is not high tech like USA. LTTE was the one largely responsible for civilian deaths.
It was in the post war scenario Rajapakses did many blunders. They did not handle media well. The way Gotabhaya handle an interview affects the gov negatively. He could have used someone else who is diplomatic to handle media.
    1. Gov did blunders with their relationship with USA, India.
    2. Gov did not handle media well.
    3. The foreign serivce was destroyed by lackeys. Appoinment of Sajin Vass is not good at all.
    4. UN was not handled well

    They did many blunders internally.
    1. Scrapping Tamil language national anthem. ( what purpose does this action serve?)
    2. Failure to bring a political solution for the Tamils.
    3. Gov using war victory to strengthen their electorate power at the expense of reconciliation in SL.
    4. Building buddhist structures in the road junctions in N&E. (I dont know whether this is true I have no evidence.)
    5. Failure to re inforce the fact SL is a multi ethnic and a multi cultural country.
    6. Failure to suppress Sinhala Buddhist racist movements.
    7. Failure to make tamil politicians partners in the development process in North.
    8. Destroying democracy and good governance in SL and making the judiciary toothless. Showing disregard for the country’s law and governance which is amply displayed in the whole CJ saga. This also strengthen the allegation that Mahinda is a dictator.
    9. Saving thuggish politicians from law whatever bad they do, like Mervin Silva, Duminda Silva, Rishard Badudeen. This has done irreversible damage to Rajapakse.
    10. Disappearances of journalists and not taking steps to eradicate white van culture.

Thanks Mr. Mahendra de Silva for the excellent article which gives a balanced view of the problem we are faced with. Lt me make few comments.
Right round Colombo and suburbs tanks (lakes) are being built to beautify the city. Farmers in Raja Rata are facing problem and have been complaining that their (agricultural) tanks have got filled up and sufficient water doesn’t retained for their agricultural activities. What is more important, beautification or making poor farmers earn a living. Our priorities have got mixed up. We want to make Colombo more beautiful than Sigapore, while poor are dying of hunger or committing suicide. Why can’t those soldiers who dig tanks and the machinery used in Colombo sent to Raja Rata to take the silt out and make those tanks retain more water so that the farmers have no difficulty in getting water during the dry season.

The problem with the Sinhala diaspora is that they have had their entire education (Kindergarten through University) free at the expense of tax-payers. Now they are making good money and have luxury living abroad. But they have a guilt feeling. So they show their patriotism vigorously to cover-up their guilt. This is to show us they are more patriotic then those living in Sri Lanka. So we have to listen to them preaching and proselytizing us. They don’t come back to Sri Lanka to live for their patriotism or for the mothrland’s sake but come only after retirement because they know that the money they have earned stretch a lot here.

While I agree with the main argument, what he is forgetting is the decades of Sinhala oppression of minority Tamils that led to the rise of Tamil youth militancy and the tigers in the first place.

Without that analysis to say that MR delivered us from the savage tigers is white washing the rascism that is part and parcel of the Sinhala/Buddhist psyche which MR represents and gains support from…to this day…

You have mentioned that it is a fact that ruthlessness of Rajapakses had a positive effect in completely eliminating Tiger menace from Sri Lanka temporally. I think the driving force for winning the war is not his ruthlessness but his incapability in handling other issues such as the economy and his ambition to become a dictator once winning the war. This fact was well explained by the MP Paba when she gave her first TV(Derana) interview while being a UNP MP.

I am disgusted by most of what this writer has to say, but do not care because he belongs to an insignificant minority of Sri Lankans overseas who went back to ask for plum jobs from the government and were turned back.

The only thing I cant stand is his calling Buddha, “Lord” Buddha. H edenigrates Buddhahood by calling Buddha a Lord because it is an inherited peerage, given to dishonest fools who served the empire. This man is such a slave that he is programmed to think that the Lordship is the highest level a human could achieve.

The readers should pity people like you.

MR defeated the LTTE is not a Truth but only a Myth. To prove I challenge the Forces to reveal the number of dead Forces Personnel, Name , Rank and Division of the Forces for the Thirty months from Jan 2007 to May 2009, to cross check with the families, compared to the number dead of the Forces prior. The comparison of the real number dead for the thirty months will reveal the War was a Hoax, hyped to hail MR as the War Victor who was assisted by the Americans and the Indians.

What has bribery & corruption got to do being a buddhist or buddhism.
John Amaratunga, Jayalath Jaya [Edited out] in 2003 from a Land sale in Seeduwa permitted by Olitha premethiratne & the local govt.

Has the catholic Church got anything to do with Phaedophilia or the BBC because of Bob Saville??

Ronny….. Who enjoys economically other than the Tiger economies. This is a worldwide phenomenon in the Industrialised & technologocally advanced West with the exception of Germany.
The economy is bad every where.

Gamini…Gamini… To spew venom is one thing but in reality, Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower were credited with defeating Hitler…….. Thats how politics goes…………..
When the Team wins its the COACH……excellent & makes a name.

“L” Board perera…. who are these innocent Tamil people. When Velupillai was ruling the roost they opened the mouth only to eat.
Tamils can not have the best of Both Worlds.

G.Pandith….you can not walk over the “A danda”.
After the Missionaries took free education to the North due to neglect by Colonial rulers it was CWW Kannangara urging that the North received free education. WHO BENEFITED? The deprived & suppressed low caste Tamils… Till then the high caste Tamils did not permit the low caste to move beyond Elephantpass.
THIS VERY LOW CASTE TAMILS INSTEAD OF TURNING AGAINST THE HIGH CLASS TAMILS TURNED AGAINST THE GOSL to fulfill a hidden agenda of the high class and thereby showing they are dispensible.

Dicky Bird I know of, was a famous Cricket Umpire. He was not a Don Bradman who hit right round the wicket. But this pseudo Dicky Bird tries to hit right round the wicket without much success. He does not give reasons for what he states. He states: “G.Pandith….you can not walk over the “A danda”. What comment or criticism you have on what I have stated? I don’t see anything. You are free to comment with reason without making a blank statement.

I am of the opinion the time is right for a National Government. President should at least at this stage form a National Government for a period of 5 years with all parties having representation. The Ministers should be appointed based on Education and Experience and their ability to deliver. No family banditry. Sri Lanka has one of the highest percentage of literacy in Asia, but we behave like uneducated people. When the tigers were there, there was more law and order in the country than what is there today. Does that mean Tigers kept the balance and now that the tigers are gone, the battle has become a ‘home and home” match, sinhalese against sinhalese, budhist against budhist, budhist again christians, sinhalese against tamils, sinhalese against muslims…. and so on. What a sad state of affairs.
