Liberator Becoming A Monster

By Mahendra De Silva –

Today Sri Lankans who are living abroad watch with sadness and anger what is happening in our country. Whenever I meet Sinhalese Buddhist Rajapakse supporters they ridiculed me for expressing my views about Sri Lanka. They say that one should come to the county to understand the developments taking place.  They talk of new roads, sky rise buildings, overhead bridges, luxury cars and also the cleanliness of Colombo city. According to them very soon Sri Lanka will be far ahead of Singapore When I ask about freedom and level of democracy, media freedom in the country they again get excited. What freedom? When Tamil Tigers were killing our people daily, did you talk about freedom? We all lived in fear. How many innocent people were killed by Tiger bombs, in trains, busses and everywhere? No one talked about our democracy and freedom then. It is Rajapakses who saved us from a disaster. None of the other leaders, JR, Chandrika, and Premadasa could not save us. We have to worship Rajapakses for saving our country. They deserve to rule the country for generations. –  I have come across even highly educated and intelligent Sinhalese professionals who subscribed to this viewpoint. It appears that this regime can continue for generations to come even if it becomes a total dictatorial state like North Korea so long as mentality and attitude of majority Sinhalese Buddhists remains same in tolerating injustices of Rajapakse regime.

At least now the Sinhalese Buddhists should understand the damage happening to our county under the present corrupt leadership.

I was thinking to myself the rationality of this argument in support of Rajapakses which is quite prevalent with Sinhalese ordinary people. It is a fact that ruthlessness of Rajapakses had a positive effect in completely eliminating Tiger menace from Sri Lanka temporally. But Sri Lanka had to pay a huge price in terms of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians who had to sacrifice their lives in Vanni during last stages of the war and adverse publicity Sri Lanka received. War could still have won more respectably if they were little sensitive to human casualties. But brutality of the way it was conducted damaged the reputation of Sri Lanka as well as Sinhalese who are known as peace loving followers of Lord Buddha. Further War Crime charges were repeatedly made against the Armed forces who made a great sacrifice to liberate the country. In my view we could have minimized the damage to great extent if the Sri Lankan Rulers of the day acted intelligently. A good leader, who has all the powers needed to make a difference to other people’s lives, should have understood the sufferings of Tamil people due to decades of war. How great it would have been for Sri Lanka if Rajapakse made use of the golden opportunity he got to unite the country.  His heart should have felt for the over hundred thousand refugees in camps in Vanni.   If he was intelligent enough first thing MR should have done after the war was to admit that innocent civilians were lost in the war.  If there were claims of misconduct or war crimes a proper enquiry should have been made, and culprits punished.  A rapid compensation and settlement process should have taken place immediately after the war. Instead of wasting billions of dollars to build unproductive ports and airport at places like Hambantota or creating airlines in his own name like Mihin Air, wasting billions of public money,   an intelligent ruler would have spent that money to develop North and East ruined by war and also to uplift the morale of Tamil people who had lost everything in their procession due to war.  It is natural that they would harbor an ill will towards Sri Lankan government for what has been happening there. Goodwill gestures by government would have done a huge attitude change in Tamils within the country as well as diaspora outside Sri Lanka. Our Buddhist priests and Sinhalese ordinary people should have been the forefront in refugee camps helping Tamil people who lost everything due to the war. Act of Kindness by Buddhist priests and Sinhalese towards Tamils would have done much more to spread Buddha’s message across North and East, than building Buddha statues and temples all over Northern peninsula. Even the war crimes charges and the very bad publicity Sri Lanka and Sinhalese Buddhists received after the war would have been minimised if Sir Lankan government took concrete steps to achieve real national reconciliation and rebuilding of war-torn territories.  Rajapakse would have been hailed like Nelson Mandela, if he acted as a statesman at least after the war. If he worked towards winning hearts and minds of all the people including Tamils after the war, Rajapakses could have stayed in power easily without having to do all the bad things he does today to stay in power.

Again coming back to the rationality of the argument that Rajapakse’s can do anything because they liberated the country from Tamil Tigers, counter argument could be made that if someone saves a another from a disaster in order to pay gratitude is it necessary to allow liberator the liberty to do anything as he likes to the victim.? In Sri Lanka the liberator who saved the county from the clutches of Tiger monster is turning to be a monster. Liberator has shut down the free media in the country. Liberator has killed, harmed or chased away any one challenging his decisions. Remains of democracy and independence of judiciary which have been still surviving in the country is to be taken out completely. Liberator has eliminated any opposition in the Parliament by buying out Parliamentarians by offering lucrative deals using public funds. Parliament has become a rubber stamp of Rajapakse, who has ensured a Parliament with his clowns who would do anything for him. He is also in the process of buying members of judiciary with various bribes. Liberator would try to attack people who do not bow down to his wishes or try to work according to their consciousness.  Liberator would take revenge from people who becomes a threat or likely to be a threat to him   with fictitious or made up criminal proceedings. Best example was former army commander Sarath Fonseka or present CJ, Shirani Bandaranayke. Liberator will ensure that all his die-hard followers and admirers are protected from the arm of law irrespective of whatever they do. Liberator has released rapists, murders and drug dealers from criminal proceedings because they are his supporters.

Rajapakse supporters who boast about Sri Lanka becoming a Singapore, does not realize although democracy is restricted in Singapore, one thing certainly happening is the rule of law applying to everyone equally. After former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew left his office after making Singapore one of the greatest and rich countries in the world, he did not  appoint his son or a relative  to be his successor. Corruption is lowest in Singapore compared to rest of Asia. Can anyone believe Sri Lanka becoming a Singapore with the level of corruption, nepotism, and indiscipline rulers of present day Sri Lanka?

At least now the Sinhalese Buddhists should understand the damage happening to our county under the present corrupt leadership. They should realise that democracy we enjoyed under British rule and post-independence governments all this time is in last stages today. Are they allowing the liberator to continue to undermine our traditional values, rule of law, independence of judiciary and a public service? Are we allowing liberator to use the police and armed forces as his private army. Are we allowing liberator’s puppets to be the judges of Supreme Court and other courts?  We also should remember that birth of another Prabakaran is not far away if we alienate Tamils the way we do now and the birth of another Wijeweera if the Liberator runs the country this way. The mentality that Sri Lanka belongs to only Sinhalese Buddhists should be done away in modern 21st century. Treating everyone equally irrespective of community or religion is an accepted norm of a democratic country. Devolution of power and allowing people in a particular region to take its own decisions on administrative, development matters is also a recognized component of democracy. Because of foolish communal minded Sinhalese politicians SriLanka had to suffer from communal disharmony and violence and unrest among minorities. At least now we should learn from past experience that real peace is possible only when there is communal harmony and satisfaction among all communities. We should realise that one of the culprits of present day unruly behavior of governing politicians is the monster constitution which gives unlimited powers to the President. These powers would make even a good man an evil dictator.  Even if we change the present rulers very soon we will find the new rulers would make use of the huge executive powers vested in the Executive President fully to continue the same path of dictatorial rule. Politicians promise to change the constitution when they come to power, but when they get the taste of power, they do  want to continue to enjoy it and make as much as personal gains, not only to themselves but also to their generation. Therefore the most important task would be to make sure that whoever takes over power again do it under a new democratic constitution model with full of safeguards to protect Sri Lanka from corrupt politicians in future.

    Mr.Mahendra De. Silva.

I understand what you are talking about. You should also know that where we came from…We are Rude,Ruffian King Vijaya’s desendents and we still carry that blood.

Ever since we got Independence, our Socially, morraly and extremely jealous, negative, degenerated, selfish, politicians ruined out country.

The first a..ho..SWRD Bandaranaike who has a complete Britsh name…. who had his final education in England and who was a Christian became a Buddhist for political power, who along with D.A. Rajapakse (President Mahinda Rajapakse’s father) left UNP to form his selfish SLFP party, brought Sinhala only policy in 24 hours not only to win the sinhala majority, but also the first to divide the country on Racial and Religious denomination….…and ever since that day our country went down the drain.
And for doing this great sin he paid the ultimate price by getting shot by Somarama a buddhist monk.

The Britishers are the first to build tar roads, railway, Tea,tea plantations, bunglows, Rubber plantations, Schools, Universities, Libraries, Hospitals, medicine, Churches,Temples, Mosques,Kovils, Electricity, water, gas, brought in cars, trolly busses, lorries,Helicopters, planes,Police, Army, Navy, Airforce, Courts, parliament, Cricket, football, netball, rugby, athletics, swimming, golf, cadating, scouts, dams, furniture, cement, Radios, record players, movies, cinemas, shoes, shirts and slacks, hotels, bunglows, guest houses, glass, plates, pots and pans, fork and knives, flour, bread, cheese, cakes, butter, wisky, elephant house soft drinks, banks, Pens, western music, weddings, pencils, telephone, telex, post office, harbours, airports, etc etc. …..I could write a book….ALL THESE WERE BUILT AND BROUGHT WITHOUT CHARGING EXTRA FROM CITIZENS OR BORROWING FROM OTHER COUNTRIES.

BUT WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS AFTER DOING ALL THESE FOR SRI LANKA WITHOUT BORROWING OR TAKEN A SINGLE PENNY ON LOAN…..I MEAN WITHOUT BORROWING A SINGLE PENNY FROM ANYBODY, STILL OUR UNAPPRECIATIVE, UNCULTURED, THUGS WHILE STILL USING ALL OF THESE WHAT THEY GAVE US FREE….STILL BLAME THE FOREIGN IMPERIALISTS WITHOUT ANY GRATITUDE FOR WHAT THEY HAVE DONE FOR US ….JUST TO GET THEIR POLITICAL GAINS…….WITH VICIOUS VENOM PUT ON PUBLIC.

THIS IS THE CURSE THAT OUR COUNTRY IS PAYING TODAY…DUE TO OUR BAD, SELFISH, UNGRTITUDE, SWOLLEN HEAD,INSANELY PROUD, POLITICAL BAST..DS.

If the politicians would have allowed us to learn in english medium…..all our town and village women would have gone to Europe, USA,Canada or Australia as Nurses and attendants or montessori school teachers and assistants or baby sitters and nannies which those countries still have a very good demand…..but with no proper english education now they go to Middle East as servants….and those house maids are our main foreign exchange earners. Even Bangladesh, India, Malaysdia and Phillipines have curbed sending their women to some of these ME countries…but the ‘cursed’ Sri Lanka Govt. still send them. ALL BECAUSE OUR SWOLEN HEAD BAST..DS DON’T KNOW HOW TO APPRECIATE AND BE THANKFUL.
IN FACT OF LEARNING THEIR TALENTS AND GOOD OF THEM…WE TRY TO SHOW OFF TO THEM THAT WE ARE MORE BIGGER THAN THEM WITH AN UTTER FALSE PRIDE. IF NOT FOR THE BRITISH OUR POLITICIANS WILL BE STILL GOING IN GON KARATTA (Bullock Carts) eating Aggala and wearing Amude, Holding King’s Pandama.(Koppara Lamp)

I WILL BET YOU TODAY…NOW… IF WE EMPLOY TEN QUALIFIED BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS FROM ENGLAND OR USA…..THEY WILL DEFINITELY DO A BETTER JOB AND WILL DEVOLOP THE COUNTRY MUCH MORE THAN THE 175 GOVT. PARLIAMENT PIN PADI JOKERS WHO ARE EVER SUCKING PEOPLES BLOOD MONEY DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. INFACT THEY ARE A BURDEN TO OUR COUNTRY WITH ALL THE CORPORATIONS THEY RUN ARE RUNNING AT COLOSSAL MULTI BILLION RUPEE LOSSES TO THE COUNTRY. THEY ARE NOTHING BUT RATA KANA KELAWADDAS.

I BET TEN EUROPEAN BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE QUALIFIED IN RELEVANT FIELDS WILL DO THE GOVT.175 parliament MP’S JOBS NOT ONLY WILL BRING OUR COUNTRY OUT OF THESE COLOSSAL LOSSES AND CATESTROPHE, BUT ALSO DEFINETELY WILL GIVE A BETTER SERVICE TO CITIZENS AT A MUCH LOWER COST WHAT THE CITIZENS PAY NOW…..AND I STRONGLY RECOMMEND EMPLOYING FOREIGN PROFESSIONALS TO ADMINISTER COLOSSAL LOSS MAKING BOTH GOVT. CORPORATIONS AND SERVICE SECTOR.

WE COULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER ENGLAND OR USA BY NOW IF WE WOULD HAVE CONTINUED USING THEIR ADMINISTRATION KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS EVER SINCE INDEPENDENCE.

WHEN THE DONKEYS RULE, BOTH EDUCATED AND REST BECOME MERE PAMBAYAS AND GOONS.

    SUBA ANAGATHAYAK……GOVT. PARLIAMENT GON HARAK
    HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013

Yes, I completely agree with Jayantha,

If President, the Prime Minister and other Ministers and their siblings can go to USA, Europe and other western countries for MEDICAL TREATMENTS, If most of the Ministers children go to these countries for EDUCATION, If Sri Lanka Cricket Coaches ARE BRITISH, AUSTRALIANS AND NOW SOUTH AFRICAN, and our famous sprinter SUSANTHIKA WAS TRAINED BY AN AMERICAN COACH, AND THE LAMBOS, THE ASTON MARTINS, COULD BE IMPORTED FROM THOSE COUNTRIES etc..etc…….

I don’t know any reason why we shouldn’t get their ADMINISTRATIVE, TECHNICAL, AND INNOVATIVE KNOWLEDGE TO RESCUE OUR AILING CORPORATIONS, SERVICE INDUSTRY AND OTHERS.

China is a mere huge assembly plant for mostly US and EU industry and their customers. CHINA’S PROFIT IS AT THE EXPENSE OF IT’S CHEAP BUT EFFICIENT LABOUR AND EVER DEGENERATING ENVIRONMENT AND AIR AND WATER POLLUTION FOR WESTERN INDUSTRY.CHINA ALSO COPY WESTERN TECHNOLOGY AND NOW PRODUCING THEIR OWN.

It’s time to think serious and act fast before we all get drowned in a thick mud never to rise up as a proud nation.

THOSE WHO HAVE EARS TO HEAR….HEAR, AND EYES TO SEE….SEE, AND BRAINS TO THINK….THINK, IN THE GOSL. PARLIAMENT…..PLEASE THINK SERIOUS AND ACT FAST.
BORROWING AND PATCHING AND EVER PREDICTING STARS AND PLANETS TO RESCUE IS NOT THE SOLUTION BUT REAL KNOWLEDGE OF SUBJECT,DISCIPLENE, PLANNING, INNOVATION AND GOAL ORIENTED, EXECUTING TAGETS AND ACHIEVEMENTS, HONEST AND HARD WORK ONLY HELP.

      GOOD LUCK.

    Mahendra De Silva,

It was very pleasing to discern your interest in Tamil Sri Lankans and their welfare. In fact the many comments also project the same interest was very satisfying. This is welcome and I am sure will be appreciated by the Tamils and all right thinking Sri Lankans. The reasonable and sane voice of the Sinhalese rarely heard and hence this is a treat.

However, it is unfortunately apparent that you are unaware of the details of and trends in the post-war scenario and have failed to acknowledge the enormity of the problems, the positive and highly effective measures taken by the government, the negative propaganda offensive launched by sections of the Diaspora and local politicians. It was not an all black record. I my opinion the white predominated over the black and grey. You also failed to acknowledge the dastard tactics of the LTTE, throughout its existence and especially during the closing stages of the last war.

It is important to acknowledge that the Tamils here in Sri Lanka are much relieved that the LTTE is no more. The IDPs were cared for in an admirable manner. The war-affected people have also seen infra-structure re-built in record time. However, problems with housing, employment, livelihood, social evils, social distortions, political and administrative corruption need to be resolved. It is yet not a bed of roses, however it not a hell either. There is daily progress towards the better and the positive.

What is rarely acknowledged is that the government carried out the infra-structure development program in the north and east, while also improving them in the south. This was a very wise decision as the Sinhala people have not felt left out of what ultimately results in national development.

The CJ episode and the trend towards greater stranglehold on the country by politicians are ugly and have to be resisted. It is this stranglehold by venal politicians that is the greatest nightmare confronting this country. This is not the invention of the Rakapakse family or government. They are wielding power at its current peak. Our politics though criminalized to an ugly extent now, will continue to be further criminalized.Criminalization goes hand in hand with erosion of democratic governance. The trend started at independence and has been in linear and accelerating -geometric-progression since. Unless, brought to an end, future governments when their turn comes, will appear worse by comparison.

The CJ affair is a God-given opportunity to reverse this trend and for good, democratic governance be established in this country. The Tamils were the most affected by the failure of democracy and good governance in the country. The Tamil militancy and the LTTE phenomenon were the result of this failure and unfortunately the mirror-image of the same trend.

“The Tamils were the most affected by the failure of democracy and good governance in the country. The Tamil militancy and the LTTE phenomenon were the result of this failure “

      Exactly,and agreed 100%.
The gov of SL since independance always tried to do what they wanted. Never listened to dessenting voices. The gov suffers from the inability to get together and take a dscision after considering all affected parties. Never talk with stake holders. This has affected the country very negatively. You can see this trend in almost all the decisions the gov take.

      Mano,
How can there be one race???
The Majority Sinhalese are not a pure race.
It consists of a mixed races – like Veddhas, Tamils, Malayalees, Arabs
etc. and have many castes like Govia, Karawa, Durawa, Salangama and so on all combined.

excellent article. One thing he has not stressed enough is the ultra nationalist and racist forces at play in a big way, under the leadership of the Buddhist monks who are spreading hatred and ill feeling towards the minorities, among the Sinhala people. These juntas are taking law into their own hands and making non Buddhists including Sinhala Christians alien to SL. The government, is taking an indifferent position in these conflict for political reasons. When will Sl wake up to the realities and avoid repeating a 1983 style porgram. ??

Thanks Mr. Mahendra de Silva for bringing up your thoughts to this forum and making people think. I agree with your message and it is very true the politicians living in the south, did not do much to reconcile the ethnic issue. War is not the real solution. It played a roll to contain the situation. Though the LTTE defeated the minority consciousness of being discriminated is not.

Everyone born on Sri Lankan soil should have the same rights, even to be the leader of the country which is not evident. Sri Lanka is a multi plural – multi ethnic country. But the constitution gives the special preference to Buddhism over other religions in Sri Lanka. These kind of missteps by Sri Lankan politician from the past are need to be corrected if Sri Lanka to achieve long lasting peace.

Minorities in Sri Lanka will not trust the Sinhalese majority governments in Colombo for a very simple reason. Sinhalese politicians keep cheating own people and corrupted.
Can minorities expect anything better from these politicians than getting cheated more?

In Simple, at least, implement 13th amendment and let Tamils and Sri Lankan Muslims the rights to solve their own issues themselves regionally. It will create better hopes and reduce bad blood between ethnic groups.

    Dear Lankans,
First of all lets stop claiming that this country belongs to one particular group of people. We all came from India. whether it may be singhalese or tamils, we all came from india. I think the mahavamsa starts from the time vijaya came to Srilanka. If thats true… then who was the girl named Kuveni he met? and later on, he got married with some princess from tamilnadu. Not only him but all of his friends who came with him. So all the singalese were born to a king called vijaya and to a princess from tamilnadu.

Lets not forget that the whole india talked only tamil once.Tamil is a language which ruled the whole india. Not only in India…. But now most of the leading well known scientists and archealogists agrees that tamil is the basic root for many languages. Even the buddists prayer “ Buhdham Saranam Kachami“ itself is a old version of Tamil language. Ok lets stop these nonsense history now. Lets come to the present situation.

What did Mr.Mahinda did was his duty as a president of his country. Thats all. One good cannot erase all the other bad things he is doing now. He is doing the same thing what Prabhakaran did once.Cheating his own people. We should also agree with the fact that, We did not beat the LTTE alone. Almost all the nations helped us to beat them cos of their illegal activities through out the world. So nobody can say that Mahinda stood against the western. Its a big joke. It will be good thing to use for his elections propogands in rural areas, where those pepole dont know much about the politics. He got the full support of Indian Gov. Only cos of that he was able to finish this war. Otherwise it would have been the same old story. He got the political support from India and the weapons support from China. For that he sold all the main business to these countries. Its wont be a suprise if he make Hindi or Chinese as 2nd main language in schools.

And now lets talk about the Tamils of eastern and northern. I am not mentioning the other colombo and hill station tamils here. Cos according to those jaffna tamils, these peopels do not deserve to be a part of their Tamil Eelam. Its all fine that you guys want to rule yourselves. But under which law? You cannot have your own law to rule. You should be under the name of Srilanka. This whole island belongs to everbody. You guys cannot ask a seperate land on your own. Ofcourse, its clear that these singhala Gov have cheated you. You were all forced to take weapons cos of the ignorance for your rights by the Gov. Its all good. But you guys made a big mistake by giving all the power to LTTE, _By making them as the one and only representative of all the tamils.

Because of that the whole world turned against you. Nobody can make justice to what LTTE did and at the same time what the SL gov did to Tamils. Tamils should have agreed for an solution under the name of Unites Srilanka. Like how India is runiing at the moment.Tamils are ruling themselves. They are the king makers in every elections there. The peace prossess gave that oppurtunity. But LTTE did not agree for that. All what they wanted was only a seperate land called EELAM.

Come on guys…. lets be practical. What LTTE demanded for is almost 1/3 of the whole country, for an amount of around 2 – 3 millions of tamils. Do you all think its fair??

Lets now discuss about Mr.Mahinda & his Gov.

As he calls himself as a true budhist, I dont think even budha himself can tolarate what Mr.Mahinda is doing now. If he is really caring about peace and a united srilanka, Then he should have so far done all the good to those peoples who were truly affected by the war. But what hve he done so far??? Jaffna is still the same like it was under LTTE, an open air prison. Recent activity of army taking the jaffna uni students under their custody, shows the reallity whats happening to those people. And dont worry, these kind of activities will be happening soon in other Universities also.

Who need CNR?? Even now the Srilanka is one of those country which allocates more to security and defense rather than Education & Health. Mr.Mahinda himself is getting around 35 millions per day for his own expenses. I am really confused what on earth could make him to spend that kind of money every day. But on the other side he forgot that the country is getting worse day by day even after the war. Even now more money from the budget is going to defense and the amount is more than what was allocated during the war. Its a simple theory even a fool can understand what is happening now with all those money.

Finally all what I can say is, If we the people of Srilanka are not united, the we will have to deal with these kind of politicians all the time. Even the God cannot save our country. There were politicians who made a lots of money by war. But Mr.Mahinda is one of those few guys, who is making much more money than all the others by ending the war…… GOD BLESS SRILANKA .

While the community make different views there are different groups who are interested to capture comments that is interested to them and praise the writer. Meantime there are thousands of needy people who are suffering without having access for basic needs and to overcome their depressions due to sad incidents that took place for nearly 30 years. There are few silently reaching these people to help them. Let’s not waste time praising or criticizing people. Please see what can be done for the needy people. Irrespective of our nationality or race we must learn to respect each other. Whatever said and done the evil thoughts of racial issues can spread easily as long as different races live separately. The best way to go forward or to hold on to racial harmony is to spread the races according national population ratios in every District. For example according to population if there are 74% Sinhalese, 18% Tamils and 7% Muslims in Sri Lanka, then in every District approximately every race should be close to the same respective ratios. In Singapore this is being practiced for more than 30 years to maintain the racial harmony. They even go to the extent to provide quotas for some government apartments. Accordingly we must be able to see close to 70% of Sinhalese in North and East and in Colombo while be able to see close 18% of Tamils in North and East as well as in Hambantota and Colombo.
