By Vipula Wanigasekera –
Since independence, Sri Lanka’s political landscape has been marred by a troubling pattern of denial and mismanagement. Successive governments have often refused to acknowledge the root causes of the country’s socioeconomic decline, with political rhetoric consistently avoiding accountability.
One of the most glaring issues in Sri Lanka’s political narrative is the refusal to admit that bad governance has been a significant factor in the country’s decline. Politicians across the spectrum have continuously deflected blame, choosing instead to focus on external factors such as global economic challenges or natural disasters. However, the reality is that poor decision-making and a lack of long-term planning have crippled the nation’s growth prospects. For example, the debt crisis that culminated in 2022 was exacerbated by reckless borrowing and a failure to implement fiscal reforms, leading to severe economic instability.
Another disturbing trend is the denial of corruption, despite overwhelming evidence of its existence. Politicians often claim that corruption is not a significant issue, yet the lavish lifestyles and unexplained wealth of many politicians and public officials tell a different story. Despite these accusations, there has been little effort to investigate or hold those responsible accountable, perpetuating a culture of impunity.
Sri Lanka’s mismanagement is also evident in the inconsistent and often poorly conceived policies that have been implemented over the years. From agricultural policies that led to food shortages to infrastructure projects that have become white elephants, the lack of coherent planning has had disastrous consequences. The decision to ban chemical fertilizers in 2021, for example, resulted in a sharp decline in crop yields, forcing the country to import food at a time when foreign exchange reserves were already depleted.
The appointment of political loyalists to key positions has further exacerbated the country’s problems. Instead of selecting individuals based on merit and experience, successive governments have prioritized loyalty, often with disastrous results. For instance, appointing unqualified individuals to manage state-owned enterprises has led to inefficiencies, financial losses, and a decline in service quality. The Sri Lankan Airlines saga, where political appointees made decisions that nearly drove the airline to bankruptcy, remains a colossal burden on the Sri Lankan economy today, with no interest from potential joint venture partners.
Loyalty to the ruling party has consistently been placed above effectiveness and efficiency in governance. This culture of favoritism has stifled innovation and progress, as individuals who challenge the status quo are sidelined or removed from positions of influence. The politicization of the public service has also led to a decline in institutional integrity, with officials often more concerned with pleasing their political masters than serving the public interest.
In Sri Lanka, success is often measured by wealth, power, and position rather than by one’s contributions to society. This skewed value system has been embraced not only by politicians but also by corporate leaders, religious figures, and a significant portion of the general public. The pursuit of material wealth and social status has become the primary goal, overshadowing the importance of ethical conduct and public service. This is evident in the behavior of some business leaders who, rather than investing in the country’s development, seek to maximize personal profits through tax evasion and exploitation of resources.
The forthcoming Presidential election will serve as a critical test of which candidate is truly prepared to embody the qualities of statesmanship which involves a deeper responsibility to the nation, prioritizing the long-term well-being of the country over personal or partisan interests.

“yet the lavish lifestyles and unexplained wealth of many politicians and public officials tell a different story. ” Add the clergy to the list, and the true picture is clearer.
It boils down to the culture. In our culture, corruption and hypocrisy are not only tolerated, but necessary.

Isn’t that the case most everywhere in the world in all ages?
/

Leonard, On the surface of it, it might appear to be so. But in reality, it is quite different. Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and the likes come to mind.
Further, it depends on your yardstick of what success is.
(I am certain that Vipula would concur.)

Reread what the author wrote: ““In Sri Lanka, success is OFTEN measured by wealth, power, and position rather than by one’s contributions to society” (emphasis mine).
Of course, there are exceptions in every part of the world in all ages.

Lies, Damned Lies & No Statistics
Ranil Wickremesinghe seems to be playing the same old tricks, as he hasn’t come to power through the people’s vote. Recent reports indicate that Sri Lanka is still importing basic agricultural products like ginger, highlighting a continued reliance on imports despite the Aragalaya’s call for systemic change. This ongoing issue suggests that entrenched interests remain influential. Despite popular demands for reform, it appears leaders like Wickremesinghe are exploiting loopholes rather than addressing core problems. While international support from India and the IMF is essential, it may not fully alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary citizens. The real challenge is whether genuine systemic change will emerge or if it will be business as usual, with the public enduring the consequences of economic adjustments.

“ debt crisis that culminated in 2022 was exacerbated by reckless borrowing and a failure to implement fiscal reforms,”
The causes for DEBT CRISIS is multi factorial. The No 1 CAUSE is never mentioned by the authors from the MAJORITY ethnic group in SL. Had the rulers of the country, tackled the ORIGINAL Aragalaya by Tamils (Satyagraha) in 1950’s in a sincere and peaceful means the Debt crisis issue would NOT have arisen. JVP adopted along with other Sinhala Buddhist supremacists anti minorities attitude in 1970’s. I sincerely hope that the NPP will be fair to them when they get the POWERS in September 2024.
In 2015, voters really thought that they were getting a government of GOOD Governance but was let down by Ranil W and Maithripala Sirisena. Had they taken actions against people who mismanaged the country/economy and did not lead a corrupt administration, SL story would be DIFFERENT by now. Hope our TRUST on NPP is going to bring solutions to this country

Vipula,
A timely piece. thank you my dear Vipula.
Sensible writers are rare in terrible Sri Lanka.
Who cares since people including first time voters dont give a damn to the facts. Their general knowledge is highly questionable albeit record high “higher school literacy rate such as 95%”.
–
Myths guide their day today life almost 99% households and people. Also youth follow them like the blind. They dont raise the question “why” even today. ?????? socio and psycho analysts are not taken serious.
.
Prof. GLP and other academic title wearers are the best examples before your eyes.
–
Truths vanishes like water drops falling on to a heated metal plate. Nobody cares… ??????
– so called journalists are like greedy animals to make their revenues at the expenses of the mere news.
.
A nation filled with human beasts rather than brain users ! Not even 10% use their knowledge. They just support popular candidates.
.
Elections dont elect the suitable or most fit candidate. Failures repeat and people dont learn lession from the past.

according to Prof. Kovoor as a socio-psycho analyst about srilanken, back then 50 years ago., people in this country regardless of their educational levels just emulate the other.
Thinking patterns of the average remain as back then also today. They dont question why ? Elephant is in the room, nobody questions.

Dried fish is a stinky food for Europeans but is preferred by Sri Lankans. They prefer dried fish to standard desserts.
Likewise, Gossip makes irresponsible news headlines on some private unscrupulous TV channels (Hiru, Derana, Sirasa and other emerging YouTube channels). Danger is really high, experts are speechless.

Seventy six year old ex teacher like Sinhala Man is totally dumb when his friend Ruchira abuses his wording in a public forum ??????? They prefer to talk about others round the clock. ironically these men dream of a better future for this stupid nation…. ???? are they sitting upside down ?

Yes, but there are European foods that are just as stinky. Have you tried blue cheese?
Then there is a sausage made mostly of animal blood and flour, called Black Pudding. Both taste great.
/
LankaScot / August 14, 2024
Hello OC,
Don’t tell Lester which animals blood is usually used for Black Pudding. I won’t mention Bombay Duck, but it is an acquired taste.
I spent a couple of days driving back from an Exhibition in Paris with a Colleague, who insisted on stopping every couple of hours because I brought some “Ripe” Camembert with me. Like Durian, Camembert Cheese tastes great but smells awful when it is mature.
Best regards

OC, LS,
I mean our people don’t really care. Nor do they respect facts. They easily fall prey to fraudsters. They are always attracted to gossip. Ok about the blue cheese etc, but I’m not a fan of anything like that. I detested Swiss cheese.

Today, Bangladesh’s elected leader (80-year-old Mr. Muhammad Yunus (Bengali: மும் மும் மும், Muhāmmôd Iunūs, pronunciation)) asks how RW did wonders with July 2022 (mayem), in a short span of time, our rapacious domineering nation constantly smears RW. Another disaster is now unfolding.

No doubt, Bangaladeshi youth would not think twice to ” hang and tear off Dilith Jayaweera or Reno in public for their permament media manipulations leading people’s stupidity”, but abusive srilankens stay stand still or even support those candidates.
Due to the lack of proper laws and its strict implementation, this nation was eroded. If there was strict law and order in this country, Hiru and Derana (TV channels similar to whore houses) would not have been the beloved channels of the nation.
People today hardly read news papers, but they watch TV… as no times before. .
–
Blatant lies make fools leaders (Nov 2019).
They are still above the law. Nothing happens. Mahendra Rajapakse is the deadly cancer that has infiltrated this nation by abusing and targeting the gullible mentality of the majority.
Soothsayers and myth-mongers have become super-spreaders in the last 20 years. As a result, people became more stupid in the 80s or 90s.
.
The main requirement to win the hearts of the ignorant majority is to lick Bodhis in public and show them on TV channels, showing their superficial appeal to Sinhala-Buddhism, which is not “real Buddhism” at all. To me it is 100% like That of Hinduism practiced in the Indonesian tourist paradise of Bali.

Excellent article – the malaise of Sri Lanka emerges very clearly here. However, Mr. Wanigasekera, I would like to know which candidate you think actually embodies the statemanship for prioritising the public good over personal/partisan interests? I don’t see a single one in the list so far! None here of presidential material, deserving my vote!

Statesmanship can be acquired if there is a determination. At least RW could have displayed it with a completely new set of subordinates even if it means losing the election. He could have set an example paving way for a new beginning. He missed the bus, well and truely

I am not sure whether the election on 21/09/2024 is going to be fair & free without intereference from the State and its military intelligence and PSD. Was Sarath Fonseka deprived of victory in 2010 by the people mentioned?
/
vipula / August 14, 2024
little chance as our elections are faily okay with procedural and transparent system. Could be some rigging here and there. This is the only area the foreign power can little manipulate but certainly they cculd do so afterwards
/
Sinhala_Man / August 14, 2024
I’m thoroughly confused at the moment:
.
Candidates had to pay either Rs 50,000 OR Rs 75,000 to contest for the Presidency, but this talks about bribes of many millions:
.
https://www.dailymirror.lk/breaking-news/Party-secretary-several-others-arrested-for-taking-bribe-from-Janaka-Ratnayake/108-289528
.
What do you make of all this? 30 million rupee bribe! Thank god that it is not US $. There are now said to be 40 people who have paid up to contest the Elections for the Presidency.
/
vipula / August 14, 2024
One has to come through an established recognized party wgich can be made available at a price i guess. It probably takes a longer process to register a party hence the need to buy one!!”
/
Sinhala_Man / August 15, 2024
When one reads the article one finds that the bribe was only solicited, not that anybody ever “gave” it.
.
However, there doesn’t seem to be the remotest chance of Janaka Ratnayake ever becoming the President of the country. We, who read about the CEB’s price increases and the subsequent resignation of Chairman, may still have vague memories of Janaka, but of nobody else.
.
It is true that for a bribe to be even solicited, there has to be a possibility of the amount being paid. Who will pay to lose an election?
.
Strange!

Readers will find it most interesting to compare this arrest with the Shangri-La Car Park arrest of 6/5/2018:
.
https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/sirisena-orders-sacking-of-his-chief-of-staff-and-timber-corp-chairman-accused-of-bribery/
.
I have made many comments sympathetic to the arrested man; to be countered by Douglas. In a sense, Douglas and I were arguing on different sides then, but are now in full agreement with each other.
.
I have been following-up on the Mahanama story; he is still in jail, and I still feel sorry for him, but these fellows, like Sarachchandra Weerawardena (and Diana Gamage) deserve no sympathy. Many others not yet recognised – why not start compiling a list?

Leonard Jayawardena excuse is often used in Langkang to justify political crimes, so notoriously so many times. There are a lot of contributors here ready to jump in to protect their favorite politicians whenever they are accused of a crime. For Ex, if one accuses Siri Ma O of her mistakes, these professional, dedicated, de facto lowyers jump with an unknown accusation on a non-existent “neo and past” colonists and have her saved. That is why the Langkang of 2024 is so much different from 1950s Ceylon, i.e, culturally so badly deteriorated. All countries have their laws and constitution. That is the standard to be used to compare the politicians’ crimes and civilians’ crimes. Japan, Britain, Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand ………..all have faced leadership changes so many times in the past. This need not to be applied to America because the election is held within a very short time (four years), and all candidates must go through a double election process-where people have to vote for them twice in order they get elected for one term position. Further, it is very strictly observed that all elected positions are allowed for one candidate for only two terms. Further, elections are a state responsibility, so state courts, as well as federal courts, have some jurisdiction in the processes. This ensures corruption is kept away from politics.

We have a higher literary rate with very poor reading habits and above all we
depend on Gossips and Rumours of the Media and other sources for right
information . Schools do one job and Religions do another job but both end up
not helping their followers finding the truth about life . Do we get results from
the institutes we built up to improve our life ? Politics in our country and in many
other countries as we are reading and watching , does one and the same thing to
its people . Common blame is Fraud and Corruption . It has become a fashion now
everywhere , Rulers become Opposition leaders and eventually end up arrested for
past wrong doing and the charges always being Fraud and Corruption . It is a
pattern which shows almost all leaders everywhere looks corrupt and thief . We
can not ignore what is going on elsewhere and keep looking at ourselves in
isolation . We follow one and the same system and results are clearly the same .
There are plenty of loop holes that do not allow the general public to learn and
practise .No learning and No practice so No change and no success .
