A live recording of Sri Lanka’s internationally acclaimed concert pianist-composer (also a musicologist and linguist), Dr. Tanya Ekanayaka‘s solo piano recital on 25th October 2013 for the ‘Pianists of the World’ recital series of the world renowned concert venue, St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London. The series consisting of twelve recitals annually was founded by concert pianist Dame Myra Hess.
Dr. Ekanayaka’s programme included two world premierѐs comprising two of her own recent compositions, ‘Vannam (Gajaga, Hanuma, Mayura) & You’ and ‘In Lotus: Olu Pipila With Moment’ both of which evolved in 2013 as well as well-known works from the classical repertoire. Evolving spontaneously when she is at the piano, often within a few minutes, Dr. Ekanayaka’s compositions are considered to represent a new musical genre and are what serve to distinguish her recitals.
Dr. Ekanayaka is the first Sri Lankan musician to have been invited to perform in this series and this recital marks her third solo recital appearance at St. Martin-in-the-Fields and second recital in this particular series: her composition ‘Adahas: Of Wings Of Roots’ which she premierѐd at St. Martin-in-the-Fields for their ‘Pianists of the World’ series back in 2010 represents the first Sri Lankan composition to be performed at this historic concert venue. According to the concert organisers, this year Dr. Ekanayaka performed to a capacity audience of over 500 people, one of their largest audiences of the year.

Dr. Tanya Ekanayaka,
“According to the concert organisers, this year Dr. Ekanayaka performed to a capacity audience of over 500 people, one of their largest audiences of the year.”
Excellent. Bravo. It shows why. We all are proud of you.
Thank you for exposing the other face and culture of Sri Lanka, the civilized face, in this day and age of the various myth believers in Sri Lanka, especially Monks are running Amok and the politicians are licking their A****s.

To a world accustomed to seeing an ugly stereotype image of this country in the past 30 years – deadly war from land, sea and air – mass killing of civilians, terrible HR/War Crimes, a destroyed judiciary and unreliable justice system, an army and Police system that protects the rulers and works against the people and many more – the news the country also produces charming talented pianists of world class will come as a pleasant surprise. Thank you, Tanya, for showing the world there is another – and more beautiful and cultured side of this torn and much-maligned country – as well. A country where many young lads and lasses not only study but produce good teachers and students delighting the not so small world of music lovers here of the keyboard sophistication of the great Music masters of the world – Beethoven, Haydn, Chopin and many more. May your message of this welcome aspect of this country and people find a wider audience in the world for long.

This woman does an incredible amount of self-promotion, and it’s a pity that CT has fallen for it.
Regarding Amarasiri’s comments, “a capacity audience of (only) 500”? You must be joking.
/
Sukumar / November 21, 2013
Exactly, anyone in London knows lunch time free events at St. Martin-in-the-Fields. 500 – 600 old men and women are hanging around everyday.

Seetha Kanya / November 21, 2013
Colombo Telegraph, from where did you get this 500 figure ? From her Facebook or St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London?

Did any of you attend the concert? I think you are not, but I did. I was there one hour early to get a front row seat, yet I was only able to get the 5th row. Approx 30 mins prior to start of the event we had a full house. There was an usher who walked along every row of the seating area and took a head count of everyone with a counter clicking in her hand, which reminded me of my flights home on Srilankan Airlines. I was expecting a packed Sri Lankan audience, but there were only a handful of Asians and the rest were all Europeans from young courting couples to the old. The audience were thrilled by the performance, and for someone like me who have been away from the motherland for over 25 years, she certainly made me proud to be Sri Lankan. I can confirm that there was a 500+ audience and also observed some being turned away. I was so glad I took time off to see the concert, and she certainly put Sri Lanka on the map with that audience. You both must be very sad people in your lives to make such negative comments for a fellow countryman!
/
Seetha Kanya / November 23, 2013
Oh Jay, there were no body in the upstairs or balcony.
“I was expecting a packed Sri Lankan audience, but there were only a handful of Asians”
Because Asians have to work and they have no free time, even if they have free time, they will work. Because most of them are greedy.
In this country most of the English old people have nothing to do. They are always hanging around specially lunch time free events. DON”T get too exited.
/
Jay / November 24, 2013
Seetha Kanya, your comment shows your little knowledge about St.Martins-In-The-Field. Upstairs is out of bounds for events, hence some were turned away. BTW if you are living in UK, your racist remarks indicates what a sad person you are. Old English people don’t have to do anything. They are entitled to enjoy there retirement, just as anyone else.
/
Seetha Kanya / November 24, 2013
So they came all the way to listen this “Sri Lanka’s internationally acclaimed concert pianist-composer (also a musicologist and linguist) … ” hahahhaah sorry my friend. You have no idea about St.Martins-In-The-Field and its audience. every free lunch time events are the same. Don’t be too exited.

Is Jesus of Nazareth who was supposed to be born born about 2,000 Earth years ago, yours? The Holy and Infallible Pope and the Scriptures say so. This can straighten some confusion, like the Sun going around the Earth and the Earth going the Sun and many other confusing issues, such as Rebirth etc.

Truly professional world famous Sri Lankan classical musicians such as Kishani Jayasinghe, Shani Diluka and Dinuk Wijeratne do not have to rely on Colombo Telegraph or FaceBook to become stars . They have already established very strong positions in the Classical Music industry and perform very frequently (sometimes as frequent as a couple of times a month) in prestigious venues all over the world. Whereas Tanya only gives one recital for the whole year – even thats a free lunch time recital at the same old place. London is full of prestigious Music Venues , why can’t Tanya try a different venue for a change ?
Please google and read about Kishani Jayasinghe, Shani Diluka and Dinuk Wijeratne. They are truly amazing. You will feel very proud of them for what they are in the classical music world. Its sad that many Sri Lankans seem to be quite naive and can be easily fooled by the visual aspect of a recital .

I am an Englishman living in London who goes to a lot of concerts in London, especially the Proms. It was great to come across Dr Tanya playing at the prestigious concert venue at St Martin’s right by Trafalgar Square where a lot of workers and visitors to London congregate. I was amazed at her technical skills and her own compositions were an absolute delight. She is an accomplished pianist who drew in many music lovers to her concert. It was incredible that she could play for nearly an hour completely from memory. The church was full to overflowing. I estimated more than the 500 suggested because there were people down the sides of the church and a number standing. There were some Sri Lankans there but the vast majority were non-Sri Lankan and gave her a very long ovation at the end. I have never been to Sri Lanka (though would love to visit) and was so pleased that the country was so well represented by this stunningly gifted musician. Well done Dr Tanya.

Sun / November 22, 2013
David, Out of curiosity, if you an Englishman living in London who has never been to Sri Lanka, what makes you read Colombo Telegraph ?
/
David / November 22, 2013
Dear Sun,
I have a number of Sri Lankan friends and contacts in Sri Lanka who, knowing I had been to the concert, alerted me to the fact that there was a recording featured in the Colombo Telegraph…. knowing that (a) I don’t usually read that paper, and (b) would appreciate reliving the great experience. I am not in a position to comment on the paper, but felt qualified to express a view on the concert as I was there and, in fact, had been to Dr Tandy’s previous concert at St Martin’s in the Fields which I enjoyed.
Although I am English I was born abroad (and have 2 passports), and living in London which is very multicultural, have friends from other countries and cultures, including Sri Lanka. My interests are wide and not just confined to newspapers in England, though if the Colombo Telegraph would feature English rugby, cricket and football and other reviews of concerts in Britain then I might read it more often !!!
/
Light / November 23, 2013
I too was at the concert and thoroughly enjoyed listening to Tanya playing so beautifully. There were hundreds of people there filling the building. This showed how well respected a musician she is. This is her second concert in this series at this prestigious venue and this showed the reputation she is building in Britain. To be invited back indicates she must be held in high esteem. Sri Lankans should be very proud of what she has done for their country.
