LTTE, Leader Of The Opposition & Avant Garde Indictments

Arun Kumaresan – Air Vice Marshal (Ret’d)

A social media post depicts the three images of Prabakaran in LTTE camouflage, Mr Sambanthan and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapksa with an additional word ‘charged’. It is interesting to see how a Tamil politician being the leader of the opposition irks the mind set of some.

First question baffles any rational minded person is to why the Rjapaksa government did not have similar emotions – as what they now feel in seeing GR being charged – when they thought it fit to drag a war hero, now Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to custody in most uncivilized way and later landed him in the Welikada jail to serve a term of imprisonment. The method he was ashamed to face a court martial headed by junior military officers epitomized the vindictive mindset of the then rulers. Even for the worst critic of the Field Marshal acknowledges that; if not for his ruthless leadership, the SL Army would not have moved forward. If Field Marshal can be jailed, why not a charge be bought against the then Defence Secretary, who will have every chance to defend himself, unlike the Kangaroo courts the Field Marshal had to face and cope with.ltte-jool

In Rajapaksa era political arena there was room and space to the former LTTE Eastern commander who was behind ruthless atrocities against the armed forces and police. The famous among them was terrorists under him were ordered to kill 600 odd surrendered policemen. He was made a minister and a Vice President of SLFP. Eyebrows were raised when in 2010 or 2011 at SL Army Officers end of the year get together; he arrived along with the then Defense Secretary as a special guest and did his famous dance balancing a glass filled with liquor on his head.

Another person deserves mention is the EPDP leader Douglas Devananda who too became a powerful minister both in the CBK and Rajapaksa governments. He too was a terrorist and led a multi faceted criminal entity during the period as the cabinet minister. May be the above two may have had the privilege based on the rationale ‘enemy’s enemy is our friend’ but the fact remains they were acceptable to the southern mind set irrespective of being ruthless terrorists unlike the current Leader of the Opposition .

Then we have a party named as JVP. They too were a terrorist outfit as they terrorized the civil society both in 71 and 88/89 periods. Unfortunately, Osama Bin Laden era was post 2002; thus making them to escape the tag of a terrorist organization. They too killed and maimed armed forces and police personnel and also many civilians. But the JVP is acceptable to the southern mind set and no one raises the question how Mr Anura Kumara Dissanayake could be Chef Opposition Whip.

Hence the producers and supporters of the social media clip should be more forth rite in their views as it clearly emanates from the mindset issue of a Sri Lankan of Tamil ethnic origin becoming the Leader of the Opposition. Firstly, TNA claimed the right to hold the office of Leader of the Opposition as they were the largest political entity in the opposition. In the event JVP had one seat more than TNA, this would not have been an issue as JVP would have claimed it. This is the way Westminster model of parliamentary democracy functions and Mr Sambathan did not receive this appointment as a gift or at the benevolence of Yahapalnya government. If the persons mentioned above can be cabinet ministers and JVP is seen as an acceptable political entity, Mr Sambanthan has the utmost credibility to hold this elated office.

A person being charged for a purported violation of law, irrespective of his/her status needs to face the due process under the law. Unfortunately, such practices were not in vogue during the former era, as we saw how a political tug in Tangalle was protected after and raping a foreigner murdering her partner. It was only after much pressure from the British government, a trial was held and was given a surprisingly a lesser sentence of only 20yrs for the heinous act of two crimes on two individuals; murder and rape.

There is a urgent need for our nation to move towards the concept of a secular society. Towards this, ethnicity and religion needs to take a back seat in public life. Our neighbor India stands as a great testimony of a functioning secular nation that makes even many a western nation to envy. Religion and other sub cultures come second whilst emotions of being Indian supersede it by miles. This was clearly seen in 2005; when a Tamil Muslim was India’s President and Commander in Chief whilst Sikh was the Prime Minister. Both their ethnicities were numerical minorities .In contrast, the leader of the Opposition during this period was ethnically from the majority Hindi belt. Coincidently, the Indian Army Chief too was of Sikh ethnicity in the same period. In true spirit of a secular society these were never an issue in Indian political and public life.

Hence, connecting the Leader of the Opposition issue to correlate with a judicial process only shows the attempts by groups with vested interests to create emotions to scuttle the later. Such acts only harm the image of the former defense secretary and his attempt to defend and clear his name at a judicial forum.

As a close friend of the former regime recently told me referring to the crimes by the former regime in general said “ A person could have saved a women being washed away in a tsunami wave; that does not entail him the right to keep her in his house and rape and molest her and he was of the strong opinion that fraudsters needs to be brought to justice”. Wrong is wrong may it be done by whoever; MR, MS, CBK, RW or GR!!!!!

Fortunately, India had a Mahatma Gandhi who unified the nation and gave the spirit and emotions and made India for Indians. The gratitude for what he did is seen in all important towns from North to South and East to West, where the main street in these towns is known as MG road. We did not have such a supreme statesmen but it is never too late and hope we under Yahapalanya regime achieve the concept secularism and create foundations for Sri Lankan nationalism in lieu of the Sinhala and Tamil nationalism that has divided us. If we can achieve this one day we too can have MS roads in all our major towns in Sri Lanka!!!!!

    A very interesting read.

“Fortunately, India had a Mahatma Gandhi who unified the nation and gave the spirit and emotions and made India for Indians.”

Unfortunately the racist mindset of the Southerners is putrid and beyond laundering; there will never be a Mahatma in Sri Lankan politics.

Excellent piece. The Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore is of Ceylon Tamil origin. One day Mr. Thaman Shanmugaratnam who is highly respected in Singapor will be the Prime Minister of Singapore.

Sri Lanka’s loss was SIngapore’s gain. This is why Singapore is a first world country and Sri Lanka third rate!

In racist Sinhala Un-Buddhist Sri Lanka there has never been a head of state or a deputy leader from the minorities. This is because the major POLITICAL PARTIES of the country, UNP and SLFP, are RACIST.

Sinhala UnBuddhist Sri Lanka is not only racist it is also sexist!

Only 5 percent women are in the parliament because of sexism.

It is an accident and indicative of the FEUDAL Macho mentality of the country that Sri Lanka had 2 women from the same family as head of State.

Sri Lankans like to brag it had the first woman prime minister in the world but this is a joke and was only because the husband – SWRD Bandaranaiyake was assassinated, same for CBK.

Sri Lanka is not only racist it is also sexist! Only 5 percent women are in the parliament because of sexism.

women’s representation was required in the west becuse those societies were highly discrminative. Sri lanka does not have a such history.

Western women only now are coming forward but feminism is going down because women understand the importance of man and woman relationship when they get old and economically dependant.

Sexist sri lanka and need more woman representation all stupidity just the mentality of thinking west is always right.

There is another reason I think for women to not be in parliament or other elected office, the politicians attracted by the two main parties have been thugs, drunks and thieves. Which were not appealing qualities to attract women with self respect.
We have see just a handful of women lately but they are no different to the men practically bimbos.
But there is good news the young blood in the UNP is showing promise and if the leadership does not screw-up in nominations there is still hope.

        Garawi,
You write “.You only can export the tuk tuks to Asia and Africa! Are these signs of a developed country! Sri lanka is far better that the poor India! “
How true! What a wise and perceptive comment from a true Sri Lankan smart patriot!
Yes, Sri Lanka is far ahead of India in exports. It exports lakhs of women to keep Arab toilets in tip-top condition. Will India ever do this? I think not.

    Mr. Kumaresan

Very true! I for one want war crimes probes not just on the Sri Lankan military, but also on the LTTE, the other militant groups, the JVP and the IPKF.

Also the politicians during these insurgent periods, Sirima, JR, Premadasa, CBK, Rajapakse should also be investigated, IF we are to do justice to ALL and bring meaningful reconciliation to this island.

I hope you tell this to Mr. Ban – ki Moon.

Nobody talks about the Elephant in the Room. Both the Sinhala and Tamils are Paras, Para-Sinhala and Para-Tamils (Para-Demala) in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

They are lost in their myths and chronicles. It is time to expose, expose and expose, as new scientific data is busting these myths.

    This is called Para-Double Standards.

Mitochondrial DNA history of Sri Lankan ethnic people: their relations within the island and with the Indian subcontinental populations

“well written balanced article Arun. Enough is enough. WE need to move forward as a united nation”

In order to move forward, the Paras, Para-Sinhala, the Para-Tamils and the other Paras must accept the FACT they they are PARAS in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho. That is the core problem.

There is reluctance in the case pf Para-Sinhala, when the data shows that they are Paras. This is the core-problem. Read up on Katta Katha Katha, Deepawamsa and Mahawamsa, the Chronicles and Myths.

India is secular by default. Besides India is a collection symbiotic relationships among different ethnic groups.

Except for India, there are no secular countries in the world.

Mighty Europe is struggling to change their luck as the secular nature ruined their societies. their societies are on the verge of disintegration.

Sinhale was a sinhala buddhist country with it’s rich culture andnot it is on the verge of disintegration and disappearance.

Tamils, christians and muslims are over powering Sinhala buddhists and now there is over whelming reverse discreminaion. There will be a point that people will by pass the govt. Because, politicians are overly neglecting Sinhala buddhists. They have taken sinhala buddhists granted for their easy going nature.

A timely write-up with thought-provoking views. However, it is beyond doubt that majority, including the so-called “educated” would not understand the truth beneath rather wallow in pinching racial emotions.

As long the such people remain intact, out dream to become secular will be elusive – Mirage

MS has been a part and partial of the former regime and the acting president during the peak of the conflict. As such he should be knowing all the truth. He has the collective responsibility for what has happened during that time. He can not deny that. He will either have to stand in the witness cage or in the accused cage at Hague. The UNSG has clearly indicated in SL that The Hague inquiry is a reality unless they toe in line. SL is in a Trap now.

A good piece of writing worth reading. You forgot to mention “KP”‘s role and what MR & GR did in comparison to the treatment given to FM, Sarath Fonseka. Anyway repayment time has come and let us see how they would repay for the sins committed. Speaking of Mr. Sampanthan being the Leader of the Opposition, I had some concerns till recent times of him not showing up to the standing of a “National Leader”. However, recently he had shown some form of “Reformation” in stating that we need “sharing and caring” in a Unitary State coupled with his visit to the South. It is now the time to extend a “welcome” hand by the South; but the “Ugly” face of the “Defeated” is not allowing that “smile” to shine in the faces of the South. In like manner, there is the “smearing” teeth shown by a “Judge” turned a “Politico” upsetting the mind set of the North. History has, no doubt shown us the emergence of a “single” person to bind the divided; but today it could be “several” who could “Jointly” do that for the sake of the country and the nation. That move is in its “infancy” stage still; but let us strive for it to develop. Hopefully, that “Defeated Ugly” face and the “Smearing Teeth” from South and North respectively will fade into oblivion.

A secular constitution would be perfect for all citizens, to be equal in all respects of life and government.
This would heal the wounds of war and entrench peace for us and our children.
It would ensure prosperity for Sri Lanka.

A very good scientific analysis of facts and truth. It is very clear from this analysis that Buddhist Sinhala Fundamentalism is not against to terrorism, violence, discrimination, slaverism but they are against to peace, unity, democracy and humanity.

Do not have high hopes about MS. He is more or less the same as far as ethnic issue is concerned. Under him army is still building Buddhist temples in Hindu Kovil land. He wants all human right violations to be forgotten and undermined

I don’t mind even forgetting all the human right violation of the Sinhala state if they allow Tamils to have their own federal state removing the Sinhalese military out of the NOrth East.

India today is a happy and contented Country because it was struggling for Independence at a hard time when India was poor in many respects. Where as Sri Lanka enjoyed independence followed by the independence of India when Sri Lanka was very rich and its coffers full with foreign assets. Future of India at that time depended on all Indians irrespective of race and ethnicity. Race and ethnicity was kept aside for India to prosper. The leaders would have never appointed a Tamil from South India as the first President of India if they thought like Sri Lankan Leaders. Gandhi and Nehru would have never allowed Jinnah to separate Pakistan if North India wanted to discriminate. Their thinking was just the opposite of the majoritarian thinking of Sri Lankan majority Sinhalese. As soon as independence was given to Ceylon, the majority Sinhalese first converted all the poor Tamils in Negombo, Chilaw, and Puttalam as Sinhalese by offering Government jobs only if their names were changed to Sinhalese names. It was a good motivation for the majority of Tamils in those areas to be employed. During British time there was no discrimination and Tamils in those areas coexisted happily with Sinhalese. At that time Tamil speaking people were dominating the Sinhalese in several respects. All Government Departments, Banks, leading companies, Air force, Navy, Police, and Army were Administered and manned equally by Tamils and Sinhalese without any animosity towards each other. The first Parliament after independence had Tamil ministers holding important ministries and there was no corruption or discrimination. But the Sinhalese formed a communal party called Sri Lanka Freedom Party and this party got full support from the South to make Sinhala as the only Language and Buddhism as the only religion. The Tamils reacted forming a Federal Party and the feud between Sinhalese and Tamils began. The Tamils were minority in the South and other provinces except in the North and East. First all Tamils in the South got looted and killed and the looting spread to all other provinces except the North and East. The escaped took refuge in the North and East. This is a long story that happened for three decades without getting noticed neither by the international community nor by the neighboring India. Finally somehow the rebels had some sympathy in Tamil Nadu and got some support from Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This story in now well known to the whole world after this new recent history of Sri Lanka is taken up by the UN for war crimes. Even now after the new supposed to be good Governance formed by the two main anti Tamil parties together are now fooling the whole world and India too. Because of the pressure from the UN to the Rajapaksha Government, these two opposing Sinhala majority and anti Tamil parties got together in a bid to fool the world and to save Rajapaksha from facing war crimes. They escaped the same way they got away with every Government sponsored pogroms made against Tamils. This is the way the history of Sri Lanka came down to be which is entirely different from the way India made its history.
