Maithri won because of the minority, If you check their district most of votes from that district goes to Maithri which are over 70% that favoured Opposition.

But MR won the Sinhala Buddhism voters (against Maithri) and this is not enough for MR to win the election without the votes from minority.

If MR hasn’t messed with the lives of minority likes of racism or unleashing the BBS, He would have been better presidential candidate.

          Dom

it is more important for sinhalese than minorities to get rid of the previous president. He has done irreparable damage to our fabric of society by coveting law and order, media and promoting corruption.
I am saddened by the fact majority of srilankans did not realise this.

            Ken
MARA and his clan followed a clean racist policy to
win Sinhala votes. His govt was racist and went too
far that Sirisena will have to start new measures to
build up confidence among communities almost
immediately.Never again a man from down south should
be promoted to country’s top position without paying
good attention to his race relations. All those who
vehemently supported his cause must be noted down
and sidelined forthwith as part of cleansing.

If the Sinhala masses voted in a block for Mahinda like the Tamils (Muslims,Hindus,Christians) did then Mahinda would have won. Mahinda got more Sinhala votes than Sirisena.

What sunk Mahinda was his arrogance, cronyism and nepotism of his family that turned Sri Lanka in Rajapakistan.

I agree with your comments. I wanted my countrymen to show the politicians, to show they would not tolerate the likes of corrupted ministers, murderers, thugs, and unworthy creatures such as bandula, modawansa, dissanayakes and plunderers our wealth.

I hope mahinda’s legacy stays to grimly remind us the main ailments plaquing us.

A hideous Demon – whose compound was filled with rogues, robbers, drug peddlers & Rapist – has been sent home and his bro., the monstrous demon – who maintained ”killing” as the tool and remedy for any problem is…….where is he !!?

Also the poor voter should be prepared to see the same old dirty Political drama of the winners – whose noisy promises of heavens usually do not bear fruits !!? For, they all are from the same old dirty pond.

Hats off to our brave brothers and sisters of Sri Lanka.

I am flabbergastedddddd. Did not think this will happen. The robber baron cannot complain. He and his family made their billions. With so much money they can still do a lot of mischief.

A big challenge lies ahead for the new brooms. I hope they will deliver what we expect.

I want harmony between all communities.
I want independence of the judiciary.
        I want a free media.
I do not want any form of revenge against anyone. Let due process prevail.
With regards to war crimes and those that were murdered and disappeared – reveal all but reconcile. Vengeance is a double edged sword.
Keep the hot headed monks out of politics.

        Let there be peace.

The people’s wildest dreams have come true – they got rid of a brutal and corrupt-to-the -core regime.

May the people learn from this and NEVER allow the kind of mockery that has taken place to happen again.

It was the last chance, and the people delivered.

    Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa,

That is the Right thing to do. You took a chance, and fell short, and you move on..

You certainly desire an enjoyable retirement after what you have achieved over the past 10 years, especially in helping in defeating LTTE and put an end to VP.

      Amarasiri,
Your statement is illogical.. Emotions should not overpower your conscious ethical values. If MR has done illegal and unlawful thing in his in tenure, law should be applied to him too..
My personal understanding is that MR has not earned a peaceful retirement…..

      • 2
        2

Even if he had done something wrong there is no provision in the current constitution for him to be tried in any court of law. Perhaps, there should be an amendment to the constitution in this regard so that any civilian can be brought to justice regardless of the position.

“My personal understanding is that MR has not earned a peaceful retirement…..”

Remember, 4 1/2 million Sri Lankans would have voted for MR, despite all the excesses carried out by his cronies.

Those are personal and emotional opinions.

See what Buddhas did with Angulimala.

See what Asoka, emperor Asoka, Dharmasoka did.

The charges you accuse MR, and are not exclusive to him. That is part of the job he had to do, with many excesses, just like VP and many others have done…

After WW 2, how many Nazis were killed by the Allies and the Soviets?

What a spectacular fall from grace! Must admit I feel sorry for him.

Should he knock on my door. I will offer him tea, dinner and good rest. We should be magnanimous in victory. That is our culture.

Former King has not earned himself a peaceful retirement. Nope. Unfortunately.

However, we should not fall to his level and seek revenge.

Sri Lanka’s future should be one of compassion & forgiveness. Sri Lanka has prevailed. Once again.

      Cheers!

I agree with you Ben with regards to being magnanimous in victory just as the Bloody Godfather has shown humility in defeat.

Let the courts and law enforcement agencies do what is needed when they have been given full independence. Let the courts decide what to do about the criminality of the Rajapaksa clan.

Let there be peace for all citizens

“What a spectacular fall from grace! Must admit I feel sorry for him.”

Amarasiri advised Mr. Maninda Rajapaksa to take a graceful retirement, but he did not.

He listened to his Shills, Cronies, White-washers and commission takers.

The Amarasiri predicted that he is likely to lose 53% to 46% or so. He did not listen.

He listened to his Presidential Astrologers, who based their calculations on a Geocentric Earth, when the Earth in fact goes around the Sun.The Astrologers do not accept that the Earth Moves and the correct model is the Heliocentric Model.

So both Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and his Astrologers, Fail.

        Ben Hurling,
I don’t think for a moment that the families of the innocents killed in their thousands will offer him tea and biscuits. Also My3 having won due to high margin in Tamil areas should show his loyalty as a srilankan and do justice for the families whose kith and kin were killed in the past administration.
TNA can no longer keep quiet on this matter.

This man is very lucky and kudos for RW and My3 too for sending him as a passenger in a vehicle though he deserved to end up in a dirthole in Medamulana as it happened with Saddham and Qadaffi another famous dictators.

This man as should be tried in a court of law for the gross HR violations and for mass scale corruption and handed over to the Hague together with his kid brother to pay for the atrocities done of Sri Lankan public across the Island.

Together with India, we enjoy the enviable record of civilian rule in the South East Asian area – despite tremendous political pressures.
Despite his many foibles President Rajapakse has not let the country down in these difficult days. And for that, he earns the thanks not only of the whole country but of our many friends in the world as well.

Maitripala Sirisena and his colleagues have won. But the bigger challenge is to win the peace and unite the deeply divided country.

you like Chulani Fernando fought the whole world and ignored all signs from the world thinking you are the jews but you were fighting the tamils all along from 1931 to again with DSS and the 1 million that had to leave the island that was governed from hindian territory.

The folk killed in 83 were at colombo the peaceful city but jaffna village the war zone that propelled it.

Passa threw the goblet because he became an embarrassment to the hindians.

you know how serious those subs were and to the extent that the Goanese IIT ian first refused the post and now the speedy manufacture of subs is a far cry for hindia with no hardware.

You will die with anger if you dream of hate.- 200k folk want 50% of the land of 21 million folk of similar south indian genes.

    • 1
      1

He will be remembered as a person who killed innocent un armed Tamils, including unborn babies, pregnant women, old and infirm in thousands by bombing shelling, starving, depriving medicine, food, by torturing, raping, maiming, arson etc.
I used to wonder how he manages to sleep peacefully after carrying out unspeakable crimes like this!!!

      “”Chulani Fernando “

When Sirimavo and Premadasa won the war against the JVP you did not care to comment but were gritting your `werelion` teeth (mahawamse; thats is your pedigree by mahanama monk) like the ancient Hun Chinese the Colonial Sihala Buddhist to all and sundry for suckers for 66+ years and still you cannot bear that a minority of all shades can maneuver better because debate helps in a civilized world.
See peaceful and urban minority ruled Bahrain??
The world has always been urban and dictators have always risen from the village with their devilish ego’s. Cities bought about villages which are the satellites that feed and get fed in return. The auto industry of Germany is such and makes the excellent.
Our books were changed by sihala buddhist lefty parties back in the 60’s just like the west bought us our schools dress education mercantile employment etc. It only kept on getting worse with minority bashing started by villages deep down south and deep up north.
Democracy is not majority but primarily respect for others and their opinions plus more in giving than conning.
BTW VP won the war for Passa and the Yankees did their bit by pin pointing the supply ships (that is how 2 world wars were won) from 2007 and 2009 was final thrust that was unstoppable in all good faith. So its the western world that finally won the war. It’s reasonable to see IC & US from the fact it’s a former colony and yet our exports are geared to the west- business as usual.

Change we expected, Change we got. Yeah !!!! UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL, Goes an old saying….so true…Nice of MR to have left without making issues, probably after that call from Kerry. Wonder if the 2 Indian planes have taken all of his close associates away to ST Kitts & Nevis… GROBR….
Booruwansa and Johnston Fernando predicted a win by 2 million votes for MR… LOL…

ugh… Duminda is in trouble so is Johnston Fernando, Vermin MR 10% and Gota… including their goons and thugs…Thondaman is a wanted man, so are a few others… now the police will be hunting them down…

Let us not get too excited about the “honourable” behaviour of the most dishonourable politician in Sri Lanka’s history. This totally rotten piece of work only left because, for whatever reason, he knew he couldn’t hang on to power without putting his life at risk. Did John Kerry’s phone call influence him is the question!
Good riddance of the worst kind of rubbish one can imagine. However, this man has to be dragged before the courts and dealt with for the all the death and misery he was personally responsible for.

nothing like that this time over. Kerry and US dont owe the village tamils anything as they train the forces in any event.
tamil votes counted but just a 200k villages killing for 50% of the land of 21million is gibberish human rights of the ghetto concept smelly.

Passa caused discomfort to the Hindians and he had to go.

Where is Kendara Sumane and interesting what excuse he have to tell the idiotic Sri Lankan populace that goes after these moronic ASS-tro-logers.

Bugger was to tell MaRa will win even the 4th term and tried to downplay My3 victory giving some unsavory planetary positions.

Can we send Kendara Sumane on a one way ticket on the same rocket with Rocket Rohitha?

It was interesting to see MaRa having so called ‘vashi balls’ on both his hands and even pasted a ‘sura’ as a bandage on the upper arm at the time of voting yesterday.

Thanks god ! Sri Lanka have Divine intervention to get riddance of this barbaric regime.

    Uvindu and Colombo Telegraph,

Congratulations! You were the first after the BBC to announce MR
conceding defeat – as far as I know. Thank you also for the gallant
fight you consistently carried on for these years – facing several
ugly interventions by Rajapakses Gestapo – to keep democracy alive.

The greater struggle is to unite and re-build Sri Lanka. The next step will be to create the Sri Lankan Nation – which remains today, for all intents and purposes, as two Nations in the Island. It is the respected Buddhist clergy that must unite and lead the way to make us into one single NATION – bringing the much aggrieved Tamil speaking people into the national fold from their 6 decades of agony.

“”the much aggrieved Tamil speaking people””

How many times has your teacher taught you that silence is golden??

for a minority at least from the muslims learn how to live in your rotten village atmosphere of your own making.

you spoil the city and have jumped from double deckers not knowing where to get down because your mouth was full of pittu. Yet not when you drove yourself to the wealthy west where the language was foreign to you too.

Remember what you JT’s and DSSenanayaka did to 1 million tamil speaking tamils mottekaran??

Learn to blend like the progressive tamils of tamil nadu born in the north and holding high positions in the US administration by merit alone and no politics like Sri Sri Srinivasan of Chandigarh and originally of Thirunavali the heartland of Tamilez resistance.

Good that he does it. Which would pave way for a smooth transience and no innocents live loss.

Why could not talking to MS?. He would have been a Nelson Mandela, had he had the right vision for the country. Unfortunately wasn’t to be. However, Sri Lankans of all walks of life should be grateful for him for taking them out VP’s grip, and even most of Tamils who knew who VP was, would not disagree with that.

For Tamils, good that elder state man like Sampanthan, and brilliant minds of Sumanthiran and Vigneswaran, and brave Sritharan are on the ground and guiding their destiny, not Sivaji or drama queen Ananthy or the deal makers like Uruthira. The latter will keep working as a disturbing force in the days to come, but just ignore them, hopefully they would one day accompany their grand children to this peaceful land- I am hopeful if our leaders able to work pragmatically towards a better tomorrow for all.

Its time to clean the deck and give a new paint and bring back RULE OF LAW, ORDER, DEMOCRACY AND ABOVE ALL COMMON SENSE AND EQUAL RIGHTS TO ALL CITIZENS OF SRI LANKA.

WE ARE ALL SRI LANKANS. LET US ALL AT LAST LIVE IN PEACE.

This election is also a good blow on the face for the Diaspora. The Tamils in North and East have ignored the request of all Diaspora organizations to ignore voting and have listened to TNA who are the elected leaders of the community. Well done minorities in Sri Lanka. All Sri Lankans have at last opened their eyes!

It seems his astrologers were all wrong. Sri Lankans can now rejoice and be glad they have got rid of this parasitic family, who ruled this country corruptly, did not protect minorities, killed those who rallied for clean water, and made this country look like a rogue nation to the rest of the world.

We should be thankful he left without drama, and no single Sri Lankan died during the last two days.
I hope the new government will do the right thing for the Sri Lankan people, give us back true democracy,
no more nepotism, lower cost of living, no more racial tensions, websites like CT blocked, freedom of speech, accountability and less corruption. Will the new leadership be able to deliver?

Mahinda’s defeat should be used as a golden opportunity to educate the public on how Astrology is pseudo science and Astrologers are charlatans.

A huge culprit of societal ills in Sri Lanka and neighboring nations is people’s inability to think rationally and critically in regards to religion and superstition.

But if he had after winning war like a magnanimous winner if he had won the hearts of Tamils it would have been good but unfortunately he did not do.what srilanka needs to do now is resurrect its economy.it can capitalise its proximity to india and become prosperous. Thanks for leaving honourably unless you have something else in your mind such as a military coup with Gota. Anyway for the tears shed by the millions who earn less than 10,000 per month have received justice .All you did was to eat the cake selfishly with your family and political goons and BBS were the main reasons for this result if not you would still be at the temple trees. Sri Lanka needs a new chapter and all I can say is “thanks for ending the war” but there is no excuse for you for the wide spread corruption. For all fellow Sri Lankans a salute for standing up like real lions and voting for justice
