President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his tour of Kataragama visited the mosque situated in the Kataragama Sacred City on April 15. Having been welcomed by the Moulavi of the mosque, the President participated in religious observations and received his blessings. Uva Chief Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, Indigenous Medicine Minister Salinda Dissanayake and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa accompanied the President during his visit.
This happens in a time the President’s all powerful defense secretary brother is openly supporting the Buddhist extremist Bodu Bala Sena (BBS).
The BBS succeeded in forcing Muslims to stop issue of Halal certificates for the benefit of devout Islam followers. Halal protest was against charging money from all consumers for a certification which was only for a section of the society.
Can anybody protest any such certificate issued free of charge displayed on products for the benefit of Muslims? One can refrain from buying such products based on personal dislike to it and to Muslims. But no one has ethical or moral right to protest it.
But, see what is happening now. I found this banner and a link to a related blog post in Facebook where hate campaigns freely go on with no control of BBS or whatever. One may perceive this as the online stuff is spilling to society but what actually happens is the reversal.
How can we understand what the government is doing in ethnic front, in this backdrop? The government is generalizing hatred against Muslims and Islam while individually picking up Muslim leaders before media cameras. Personal relationships of the Muslim leaders with the President prevents them leading the masses against the injustices caused against them.
This approach not only marginalizes Muslims in Lankan society but also liquidates their protests and weakens their efforts to stand as equal citizens. This further appeases the Muslim countries that may worry about the fate of the Muslims in the country. Remember, the government also summoned the Colombo diplomats of the Muslim countries with the hope of continuing their support in the following day the above photograph was taken.
Muslims should be very careful about this racist approach of the government.

Mr. Ashroff formed SLMC to address the muslim grievances but Hakeem who has taken over the leadership is trying hard to protect the party while preserving the perks. Hakeem, ‘you are running with the hare and hunting with the hounds’, you cannot do this forever, you are exposed. If you have a least bit of principle left do not go back to the muslim asking for their votes, I as a muslim will never vote for you and I have never voted ‘muslim congress’. I will vote for some non-muslims who had voiced their opposition while you guys were in deep sleep hugging to your post and perks. Shame on you. Muslims appreciate the efforts of our brotherly Sinhalese and Tamils in voicing there concerns. Do to their voices there has been a reduction in the incidents and toning down of rhetoric. However the harm done to the muslim community, the reputation of the country and to the Buddhist religon is immense.
It is surprising that a handful of individuals have been permitted and tolerated to spew out such hate and rubbish. Govt could have easily taken action to apprehend these hatemongers at the very begining. If they had locked up a few at the begining all these problems could have been avoided.
No doubt this is due to the negative influence of GR who has now earned the reputation to be a religous extremist. Having such bias against minorities is inimical with the sensitive position of Secretary of Defense. High time he is shown the door and sent back to Texas.

Rauff Hakim is a traitor. I saw one of the pictures taken during a recent funeral of the mother of a leading Muslim politician. To my surprise Rauff did not even wear the traditional cap worn by the Muslims, especially in a solemn occasion as this. It shows he does not care for the religious practices of his own religion and how can such a person be the representative of the Muslims. He is like Thondaman who is a traitor as he does not do anything to bring up the standard of living of the estate Tamils. He is interested in supporting the government like his grandfather, making money and parking it in India. Most of the time he is drunk and does not do any work. It is sad that even today we have politicians such as Rauff Hakim and Thondaman who are dishonest to such an extent.

See the placard alone about – Halal they one can get it easily those BBS dimwits are just idiots – they should check it every where before going to attack lankens in that way. We the many buddhists would not see Halal food a threat. But making customers aware of that is imperative. The issue related to this in SL is to draw the attention towards BBS. The past few months of tension, bigotry, and attacks against innocent Muslims, have made the majority in the country realize that there are no leaders stepping up and either preventing, or curbing, any violence, be it an attack on a Mosque, private homes, or a shop. The Rajapaksa Brothers and Family Unlimited, were pointedly silent and inactive, the Muslim politicians selfishly looking after their own interests, did not speak out or condemn the crimes against their people, it only took a Tamil politician to stand up for Muslims in Parliament.
A sad state of affairs, when you do not have leaders who usually beg for your vote, missing in action, while hate and bigotry terrorized the minority. Next time thugs and mobs take to the street, who has the faith that we will be taken care of?
