Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa called on the government to not hide the truth from the people, while claiming that the suicide jacket along with other explosives found in Chavakachcheri was in fact new, and not a cache of old explosives as claimed by the government.
“As soon as I heard about the discovery, I called Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, he told me he will check on it and let me know,” Rajapaksa said while addressing an event in Anuradhapura on Saturday.
However, he went on to say that while the government claimed that the suicide jacket was old, according to information he had received this was new. “We got to know this is new, even though the government says it is old, the information I received is correct,” he said.
Rajapaksa went on to add that people should be informed and the truth must not be hidden.
According to the police the explosives including the suicide jacket which were found following a tip off, were wrapped in a Sinhalese language newspaper which was published in 2007. Police believed that the explosives were hidden during the war.
