Maithripala Common Candidate – Ranil Prime Minister

SLFP stalwart and UPFA Government Minister Maithripala Sirisena announced a short while ago that he will be the much anticipated common candidate at the upcoming Presdiential polls who would be backed by the common opposition.

MaitreSpeaking at a media breifing a short while ago, Sirisena thanked the UNP and the other opposition parties for backing his candidacy and vowed to win the upcoming Presdiential polls while stating it is a vital move in order to save the country from being steered towards a dictatorship.

He said following his victory he is planning to appoint Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister.

He pledged to abolish the executive presidential system within 100 days of his election and to restore complete media freedom in the country.

Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne too is currently speaking at the media briefing held to announce Maithripala Sirisena as the common candidate and he added that more Ministers and MPs of the government are to join the common opposition movement.

      Also, I’m pretty sure you’re referring to the JVP, not the JHU. The latter already support the CC, while the JVP is yet to make an announcement. And if it WAS the JVP you were referring to, they’re far from irrelevant, with the kind of power they command among trade unions and such.

          As for your last line about the UNP needing a leader people like, I’m assuming you mean ‘candidate’, not ‘leader’: Maithripala wasn’t appointed UNP leader. If you DID mean candidate, then I can only assume you are desperate, like your glorious non-gutter dwelling masters, to have Karu Jayasuriya come in so that the SLFP vote won’t split. Or perhaps you meant Ranil should be the candidate? A man who even most UNP supporters acknowledge can’t defeat Mahinda. As for false pretenses, my angelic and desperately-trying-to-hide-his-own-worminess friend, wasn’t it one P. Mahinda Rajapakse that promised to abolish the EP in writing once, and failed to do so? Didn’t he say something about safeguarding the people and the country and go around ordering protesters to be shot? Didn’t he yet again say he’d abolish it if he was elected in 2015, and then turn around and say he can’t, because something something Prbhakaran’s ghost and LTTE?

          This is like a broken record now. But at least a song on repeat would be better than listening to this circular non-logic of your kind.

          you got to understand that you cannot get rid of the presidential system without a two thirds majority.So while maithripala if elected as president will first have to have a general election.At the general election if mahinda’s coalition has the majority he will become the primeminister.the SLFP will be split and If chandrika’s coalition with ranil has the majority then they will form the governemnt with ranil continuing as the PM or giving it up for chandrika depending who has got more votes.

          Then maithripala will seek a two thirds majority from the newly elected house to abolish the presidency.If he gets it he will step down and the prime minister takes over as chief geronimo.

          I feel if mahinda loses the presidential election then there would be a three horse race for the prime minister with he and chandrika and ranil going for it.Whether a split up SLFP can get more votes than the UNP will decide the issue i feel.Ranil’s thinking is a split SLFP will not have more seats than the UNP unless they combine and the UNP will be the largest party again so he was always angling for this years ago as i heard him mention it.

      I have Never Ever read a sensible comment from Vibhushana, a person who cannot see beyond his nose and always thinks through his hat. Vibhushana sounds like a complete idiot with very little education and a shameless fool who keeps disgracing our community with his utter stupid comments.

      First of all, Maithreepala has not joined the UNP, second, Ranil has to contest the general election and win to become a Prime Minister. Maithreepala cannot simply get rid of the executive presidency and hand over to Ranil, everything has to happen after the general election and the decision has to come from all the parties in the coalition. Ranil is just one of the many who are eligible to become the prime minister.

    Smart move. I know little about Maithripala Sirisena. We will learn more about him in the coming days. He has agreed to be President for only 100 frays and have RW as PM. I hope and fervently pray the good times will begin for Sri Lanka. I hope a new constitution with a redefined executive presidency , an independent parliament, an independent judiciary and other independent institutions are considered. The role of the politicians in day to day life of the oeople should be curtailed to the absolute minimum.This can be done within hundred days, as we know what should be done.

    May there be peace and prosperity. May decency and probity return to all levels of society. may there be good governance. May the people unite to make a united and decent Sri Lanka.

    I also pray that our new hopes for a much better future are not shattered again.

        Not even God himself can agree to a war crimes probe without first changing the mindset of the Sinhalese about how to view all of this. No leader can accept a probe without facing riots. This isn’t a question anyone can answer overnight, and that’s reality. 30 years of brainwashing (on both the Sinhala and Tamil sides) isn’t going to vanish just because Mahinda was kicked out (which itself is still not a reality).

          However, I do not see any other ways to kick out the Hamba Clan. This is the only realistic option. We cannot find a guy who has not committed any mistakes.

          Let us focus on the big prize. Once Rajapassa is sent back to his village, we can focus on other matters.

      LTTE seemed to know a lot about him.He narrowly escaped an assassination attempt when a bomb blew up targeting him in 2008.Many were killed or injured in that blast.It will be like a badge of honour for him on his campaign.Nobody can level accusations of being a traitor if the LTTE tries to kill them. Chandrika,sirisena and fonseka should always remind the people of that because the sinhalese according to prabharan have short memories though i personally think he underestimated them and paid the penalty.

    This is a masterclass orchestrated by common opposition. Surely MR was caught off guard. The regime was all the while busy poo pooing RW/Sobitha Thero and CB. Don’t think they saw this coming.

    This also makes much sense that he is known to the masses (and to carrot eaters) and this news itself will make lot of ripples across the country. It won’t be easy MR and regime machinery will go all out to sabotage.

    Will be interesting to see how MR himself react. GR has been quite past few weeks. The fear must be setting in,interesting times ahead. Hope this will result in change. This also gives much credibility to UNP. They have indeed ditched self interest to defeat the common enemy of the nation.

    Royal Government appears to be not stunned. But certainly it is for the spectators.

    It is not sure if this will have CBK effect on UNP and SLFP. Even if there is some CBK effect, it is hard to predict it stand against Kings popularity. There is a chance it loose on both end.

    Sirisena has a son like Malaka Silva. The thread on Sirisena’s neck is woven around that. That is not known as strong as or complected like the ones on DMJ’s, Kaheem’s Meryns’ necks. Instead of taking the path of Mervyn, Hakeem, DMJ, he had taken this path. DMJ son’s rowdiness seems to be the lesson for Sirisena. Sirisena’s direct matters has not jet come on the papers.

    When Maithripala Sirisena wins the election, there is a possibility of a military coup as Gotha will try to take over the Governing of the country. Maithripala, Ranil, Karu and other politicians will have to have an advance plan how they will offset such a situation. Further there is definitely going to be blood shed during the campaign period and after the election there should be prior planning to control this as well.

    Maithripala joining the opposition is the best thing that has happened to Sri Lanka after a long time.

    Maithripala should also promise to have an open independent inquiry into all atrocities committed by the Police, armed forces, government servants, politicians and others during the Rajapakse regime.

      We have seen many coups and uprisings , killings and blood shed. We will not be able to achieve democracy without sacrifices. What you can see this time is far from our expectations. Civil society take the lead. It includes the lower level of military and police persannel too. No one want this maffiaanymore. Also you can see how the propaganda machine of the common candidate is working this time. It start from grass root level from poor villages. It will only take few minutes to paste a poster. Gotabaya can do nothing other than killing people. Victory for the country and Democracy for the people.

      Except this time, both the entire opposition and the SLFP itself expects Maithripala to stick to the agreement. This isn’t someone who’ll be elected on charisma and personality, but on a single promise. Ignore that, and both the opposition and the governing party might just impeach the bugger.

    And that is not going to go away because Maithree joined the Opposition.

    The sad part is Maithripala is going to give the LTTE proxy TNA what their Thalivar tried to get by killing innocent Sinhala Buddhists for thirty .years.

    Presidential election is to be held in the two nation country of SL. And the Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial council Mr Vigneswaran has asked India to help establish a Federal State for the North East SL, to enable security and safety of people in that highly militarised nation.

    Federalism is not separation. But racist and anti Tamil politicos said so and the lack of knowledge and understanding is abundantly existent amongst the Sinhalese to the extent of utter foolishness, though SWRD Bandaranayake advocated Federalism for the island as a path and solution for peace, stability and prosperity for ALL people.

    Therefore, I challenge the presidential candidates to speak the truth to the Sinhalese, in their political campaign and lead the Sinhalese to practice justice, equality and dignity to achieve peace, stability and prosperity through a Federal SL, preventing racism, anti Tamilism, Tamil Genocide and politicised Buddhism.

    Enough is enough with politicos cheating the masses. This island is for people to love one another, respect their rights and a better5 life for all.

    I think this is the result of the change of Saturn position of Mahinda in the beginning of this Month. His greediness, his alliance with the most corrupted brothers and allowing his criminal minded brother to destroy the independence of all institutions including judiciary, military, and parliament, use of violence against the democratic voices etc… all accumulated sins gave him a price. I am sure that the people of the nation will understand the need for the change to stop the revival of the good governance. This is the start and the people should not fall in the traps of Mahinda group. They will throw out billions of money and tactics to meet this challenge. They will come up with conspiracy theories like: this is a western plot, they are going to give Tamil eelam, Sinhalese will have to sink in the water and soldiers will face electric chairs like this sort fear mongering propaganda. Mahinda is a good actor in real life. God Bless Mother Lanka!

    Every one is excited here in CT and on other social media. The question I have is will this optimism and excitement in the various local and international social media ripple across the country for real and form in to a massive wave of support for Srisena and Ranil?
    Only time will tell.

    I am not optimistic, as the Rajapakse’s after tasting the power for so long and using it to amass huge amount of wealth for the family, not just the immediate family, are not going to give up easily.

    They will try every trick in the book and not in the book and some how rig and win the elections and all else failing there will be an army coup. They will give life to the dead Tiger, invent a Muslim Terror attack.

    Good times may be ahead but be prepared for a very rough ride to get there, military coup and counter coup and killings and violence are in the horizon but this is not new to Sri Lanka

            The name of this island, its flag and constitution should be approved by people in a referendum.

            Common candidate together with parties supporting him state how he is going to deal with war crimes and crime against humanity of course committed between 5th April 1971 to date.

            We don’t need capital punishment for several reasons. Therefore it should not only be removed but banned forever.

            The common candidate should find secular historians to rewrite history. All troubles start with bogus history and majoritarian arrogance.

            There are other issues that new government should address, such defense budget,Hambantota harbour, Matale airport, Chinese built power station, ….

            How would you prevent violence being perpetrated on the defeated party after a UNP lead election victory? The troubles have already started. How do you stop vendetta?

            There have been instances where large commissions have been paid to clan and its cronies. There must be paper or electronic trails, lets follow it and bring back every single dollar.

            There is another wider issue, where did the clan got the money to buy VP and MPs? Money laundering issues are involved.

            The larger issue is how would you prevent the new regime committing the same crime that Clan is accused of. Remember UNP has been out of power for nearly 25 years.

    This is the first time the UNP and a section of the SLFP have united to abolish the Executive Presidency. There is no doubt Maithre will beat Mahinda at the election as at least 25% of SLFP votes will go to Maithree.

    Let us support to abolish the Executive presidency , PR system and to restore democracy , independent Judiciary and rule of law.

    I wish him all the best.
    He also must abolish the PTA within the first 100 days.
    The Rule of Law must be enforced by the Police – NOT the army.
    The “police powers” of the army must be withdrawn.

    Now is the time to think carefully and plan for the welfare and well being of the whole country. In my opinion, the next move must be to defeat the Budget and that would dissolve the Parliament and deprive these “thugs and drug” dealers and peddlers from getting a PENSION and other perks from the public coffers. That also would prevent the Government of MR and his brother Basil from distribution of illegal”hand outs” to Samurdhi persons. Last week Rs. 2500/00 was paid to these “Samurdhi” persons who were called to the village temple. The aim of this payment is to win 1/3 rd of the Samurdhi persons that will work out to 300,000 votes. This brother Minister did the same thing during the UVA Provincial Elections, with the blessings of the Supreme Courts. In his and MR,s estimation a single vote of a “poor man” who receives a welfare payment is worth Rs. 2500/- and that is the “Thinking” of these people in power. The Government Depts. and other State organizations must also be prevented from spending money on election campaign already set in motion.

    To stop all these, the Parliament must be dissolved by the defeat of its Budget. That, I feel is the next most important step to be taken in the name of the people and the country.
