President Maithripala Sirisena claimed that political garbage from all parts of the country ends up in Colombo, adding to the waste already in the city.

Addressing a gathering at an event today (March 2), Sirisena made a clear distinction between the city and the village, and especially Colombo and other parts of the country, implying that all the ills of the country are inexorably drawn to Colombo, leaving the countryside pristinely pure.
He was particularly dismissive of the media, especially television, claiming ‘if you watch television in the evening you might think that we don’t even have a country.’
The President vowed not to heed criticism from the media but said he would continue to serve the people and especially the farming community through unnamed programmes whose implementation is to be expedited.

They’d been the majority & had been responsible in making Sri Lankan culture based on Buddhist teachings.
It’s Sinhalese who built lakes, irrigation systems, architecture that amazed international community.
During that time Tamils who had migrated from India due to close proximity lived in northern part & hadn’t contributed directly to any form of development though some bogus prominent groups now claim that Sinhalese learnt it from them.
Have you ever noticed ancient irrigation systems to challenge Sri Lankan systems in Tamil Nadu or any part of India.
Muslims also arrived in friendly manner enjoying kindness & hospitality of Sinhala Buddhists & have been living enjoying equal rights that no other country would have offered.
It’s correct that when foreigners are welcomed in that way the society becomes multi-cultural but it’s very sad that the same people who’re here due to the humanity of majority now challenging the idea Sri Lankan identity as Sinhala Buddhist country even though even today the majority are Sinhala Buddhists.

This will be treated with the contempt it deserves, coming from a tainted man, unfit to be President, just like his predecessor and his Prime Minister.
But, the glimmer of truth in it must be considered. Neoliberal policies, advocated on the basis that it is practised in Singapore, have not succeeded. They have, as in other countries, produced very rich people at the top, greedy and grasping for more through corruption, outdoing the corruption of the previous lot. Going back to the old ways of a peasant economy is not a bad idea for Sri Lanka. Singapore succeeds because it is a meritocracy, run by able Chinese and Tamils and Malays, without racism. It is not a neoliberal economy as the state runs every successful endeavour, the Development Bank of Singapore, Keppel Shipyard, The MRT system, the Straits Times, Singapore Airlines and the list goes on. It is an authoritarian, developmental state based more on public ownership of many essential services as well as commercial business. Let us not have advisors from Singapore who simply talk in terms of neoliberal solutions which have failed to deliver in Sri Lanka but can be made use of by the corrupt politicians on both sides.

If what he suggest is that we go back to our roots in a peasant, agricultural economy, there is much to be said for it. Our Buddhist heritage will support such a move. We will go away from the glitzy life of the rich people who got their wealth largely through corrupt means. There are movements like Via Campesina which advocate an agriculture based society which we were. The continuation of the Rajapaksa/Wickremasinghe type of economy requires the exploitation of the poor and those in the villages. There is a case for ending it. My3 lacks the vision or the leadership qualities to pull it off but if he means and understands what he says, there may be a beginning.

Let me offer a slightly different view.
With the prevailing thrust into engaging with the world for increased commerce, and every other possible opprtunity, you need sophistication of thinking and action which matches the rest of the world – an art that is at present essentially colombo-centric. The thrust requires Politicians too to deliver the same level of sophistication. Ranil can measure up, Maithri doesn’t even know where to begin. Therein lies the nub.

The entire SAITM group were govt. approved for a local MBBS. They are not going to RUSSIA, even if all the GMOA hospitals go on strike. AP contempt of court case should remand him for bribery and corruption. H.E says political garbage but this is academic garb. too. KDU is military and law must be obeyed and order maintained.
