Serious misconduct including incidents of violence carried out by the army has been highlighted in Major General Kamal Gunaratne’s ‘Road to Nandikadal’ book, said Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera recently.
“This book basically confirms everything that the radical Tamil groups have been saying. We are going around telling the international community that there have been no war crimes, but this book gives information about how the army has been going around breaking houses, breaking legs and even killing,” Samaraweera said.
According to him, this book should not be titled ‘Road to Nandikadal’ instead it should be titled ‘Road to Geval Kadal and Handi Kadal.’
“This book is the Army’s biggest betrayal,” he said.
Citing reasons for his claim, Samaraweera reading out several excerpts from the book said that in one page Gunaratne said how the soldiers overcome with grief following the killing of their comrades, started stopping the busses on route to the counting centres and set fire to houses and destroying private property. In another excerpt, Gunaratne was quoted in his book as saying how witnessing a certain incident where angry soldiers behaved illegally by destroying private property in the Jaffna town to avenge the death of their comrade brought ‘him satisfaction.’
“Gunaratne himself is saying the soldiers have behaved illegally. Here, we are going around saying that our Army is disciplined, but this war hero says that our army is acting illegally,” Samaraweera said.
He also added that in one section of the book, Gunaratne had said that he had encountered the disgraceful conduct of some rotten elements within the rank. “So, he himself admits that the army’s conduct is disgraceful,” Samaraweera said.
“The only this that can happen by saying and writing such stuff is to help whatever remains of the Eelam to become more powerful,” he added.
Samaraweera also said that they have received substantial proof which shows that the country’s ex-Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his defence ministry was behind many of the killings and other forms of harassment and abuse during the previous government under Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“During Ekneligoda’s investigation, one of the suspects said that the meeting with Ekneligoda was on the secretary’s orders, and we all know the most powerful secretary during that time was Gotabaya Rajapaksa,” Samaraweera said.
He also lashed out at the Rajapaksa’s saying that even though the Rajapaksa’s portrait themselves as patriots; the truth is that the Rajapaksa’s themselves earned money from the war. The MiG deal was one such incident, according to Samaraweera.

War crimes by security forces on non combatant Tamils were committed not only during the last stages of war but right from the time in 1982 when government passed the legislation to dispose of the bodies of Tamils killed by security forces without any judicial inquest. This became worse since the government declared war in April 1984 with the appointment of late Athulathmudali as minister of national security. The atrocities committed were not sporadic or individualistic as what Kamal Gunaratne says in the book but widespread and institutional. I worked as medico-legal officer in the war zone in the early part of the war and thus a medical witness to these crimes. In 1985 due to international pressure government allowed judicial inquiry into these murders, but vast majority of these killings were never brought to court. In few cases that were filed, they were transferred to Colombo on bogus security concern where Tamil witnesses had to travel down facing financial problem, difficulties in travelling and accommodation. Despite their evidence which incriminate the security forces, the Sinhala judges took the version given by the police and gave the verdict for these first degree murders, as justifiable homicide or collateral damage. With institutional racism in the judicial process in Srilanka, no member of Security forces will ever be found fault for committing war crimes on Tamils. This is the reason why even this government is not willing for an international panel to inquire into these war crimes as these atrocities will come to light when independent fair trials are conducted.

“Don’t Spread blatant lies which is part of the terrorist propaganda.”
Is it then the prerogative of the politicians, armed forces, state and war mongers to spread blatant lies?
” Terrorists lost.”
So what? Terrorists also lost in 1971 and came back with vengeance in 1987. If the state is run by undemocratic, greedy, politicians and functionaries, terrorism will recur.
“Lot of Sri Lankans lost their lives”
Tell us the total number of innocent civilians who had lost their lives from 5th April 1971 to January 2015?
“planned, ordered by cunning megalomaniacs in the diaspora. Produce them first.”
Could you name them so that the Sri Lankan state could demand their extradition from overseas which could be a tedious legal process. In the meantime the state could charge KP, Pillayan, Karuna, ….. for whatever they did in the past. MR, Basil and their cronies bribed VP to rig the 2005 presidential elections. Mangala is openly telling that he goes out and tells that there was no war crime in Lankawe. Then he claims the book is revealing some precarious incidents that will blow the whistle (expose) on the lies he is telling to the foreign diplomats. Won’t those diplomats and human Right activists who read Rapist Army book, may reads Mangala’s speech too? Mangala knows the answer to that question. Unfortunately or even fortunately, Mangala’s anger on Old Royals is much stronger than his self-controls.
He is just only with some picky points. Nothing substantial! Then why is he climbing that high with this shaky ladder? He wants all the chances he could to hit back his enemies.
Ranil, New King and others was protecting Old Royals only for their political game. Ranil went to New York to Demand UN SG to tear off the UNSG’s Expert Panel Report. New King fired Dilrukshi. But Mangala is protecting Old Royals only because he was asked to do that. He is doing it as a job, so when there are obstacles he is complaining. Haven’t you seen a nanny complaining about the Child as not lying down so how could she make it to sleep. If her duty is to make the Child to sleep, isn’t the child’ duty to lie down?
There is a story said that when a dad’s was hiding under the haystack the child came out and told the police that his father wasn’t under the haystack. Here Mangala’s story (accusation) is different and interesting. In Mangala’s story it was the Dad who came out of the haystack and told the police that he wasn’t under the haystack. It is to protect the Gunaratne kind of Modaya War Criminal that Mangala go out all over the world and keep lying.

It seems there is a thawing taking place in the Old Royals’ camp. The reed soldier is bending the other way. It is an indication of the breeze turning its direction.
This reed soldier had lot of admiration for Old King as Old King was working with China, until this guy took vacation from CT last month. During that time Old Royals staged a protest against Ranil handing over 5 villages spread of land and Hangbangtota Habor to China for his pocket money. Even that money China not supposed to pay for Lankawe. A commission for Mallik and rest for Chinese institutions and the prison labor force of China. Old King’s spoiling of this has made a breakage between China and Old Royals. China attempted un-train Old Brother Prince from Aappa Diplomacy and train him through the Chinese professional diplomatic courses. But, again, Old King put a block on that by warning Old Brother Prince to stay away from that. He may have wanted Old Son Prince trained in Chinese diplomacy. China may not think that he would be able to win New King or Ranil and would see it as a foolish deed of besetting Yahapalanaya. So Old interest of training Old Son Prince may not go ahead.
Because of the breakage between Old Royals and China, this motherless, orphan child got disappointed by no place now to go.

The ‘heroes’ can “do no wrong” and never committed unlawful acts – seems to be the credo of Minister Samaraweera.
He and the C-in-C have to necessarily whitewash all crimes committed on civilians during the war, as the military has become all powerful and expects politicians to ‘toe the line’, and the military is essential for their political survival.
The army ‘punished’ Sarath Fonseka for contesting the presidency by imprisonment for three years.
This is a “first” for any army in the world.
The armed forces hold northern citizens in a climate of fear and oppression – military intelligence personnel constantly harass citizens and public officials not to protest about human rights violations, chief of which is making them “refugees” in their own land by holding lands and homes belonging to them, as now belonging to the armed forces.
The Minister pretends not to know, and utters lies at the UNHRC.

Mr. Samaraweera,
When the book ” Road to Nathikadal ” was released many in the MaRa , GoRa Bros & Co including smart patriot DJ were full of praises for Kamal Gunaratne. So how can you make Kamal Gunaratne as a scapeoat ?
Have you ever read Tarzie Vittachi’s ” Emergency’58 ” ? Do you know why he was determined to do that and put the horrible events in record (for the future generations ). ?
There were lot of messages to the politicians through out that book and in particular the concluding para.
SWRD could not make use of the power of his land slide victory to influence his party, sangha and the masses to unite the country through lasting political solution, Again in 1972 and 1977 the land slide victories did not bring any lasting solutions.
After May 19 th 2009 MR had the support of the majority of the majority,, power & control but knowingly failed the country.
Mr. Samaraweera your coalition government and President MS with thin majority will never achieve reconcilliation and peace unless Maha Sangaha and the youths of Lanka pursuade Rajapakses to gracefully step down from politics in the interest of the country’s future.
Can any public intellectual do a comparative analysis of the writings of Tarzie Vittachi, Mervyn de Silva, Lasantha Wickramatunge, Kamal Gunaratne and Dayan Jayatilleke and enlighten the youths ?

At the press briefing where Mangala Samaraweera talked these things (video clip appeared in Lanka C news) he talked about corruption in the Rajapakse regime and said “Mahinda Rajapakse hitapu Janadhipathi thumage namin nam thawama kisima deyak oppu kara nethi unath Mahinda Rajapakse mahatha weda kara thiyenne Charles Diken ge Oliver Twist nawakathawe inna Pagen kiyana hora raja wage.” What he said was so far we have not got any proof that Mahinda Rajapakse looted any money but he has allowed his family members and cronies to loot. If that is the case Mahinda = Ranil. Ranil also did not loot but he allowed his cronies to loot the Central Bank.
Soon after coming to power Mangala said Mahinda Rajapakse has stolen US$ 18 billion and he knows where Rajapakse is hiding that money. In the press briefing he said Rajapakse family was hiding the loot under the National Flag. What an idiotic thing to say. If he knew where Rajapakse was hiding the money why the hell he could not find it and give us some solid evidences. I do not know how long these idiots are going on talking talking and talking about Rajapakse’s corruption. Man, people are really tired of this tune, get something new. Isn’t it worthwhile to read and picture the ground situation of this struggle that lasted for more than three decades? I valued reading it. My only concern and disbelief arose when this writer and the “Rana Viru” Maj.Gen. Kamal Gunaratne appeared among those “Viyath Maga” Gang organized by the ex.Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse. In that context, I wish to refer to his own writing in this book “Road to Nandikadal”, page 20 where he very religiously describes the advice given by his father when he sought the blessings to leave home to join the Army. I could have reproduced it here in the same words he stated it; but “reproduction” of any part of it has been prohibited without permission. However, that ADVICE given by a “Great Parent”, a HERO to me, is a must read for all the “RANA VIRUWO” – (War Heroes) Mr. Minister of Foreign Affairs, please read that “Advice” in page 20 and learn to observe and take stock of the situation that is being created within the Armed Forces for the future protection of the country. That is what is important to us and the country.

Following the Nanthikadal victory, the then Lankan Defense Ministry website claimed that “…………. not a single Tamil civilian was killed or injured ……………..”. White-van was invented to give free rides to skeptics.
“Road to Nandikadal” proves that skeptics were silent.
The book is no more than a narrative because of the failure to address the root cause. The first sod was dug for the “Road to Nandikadal” in 1948 when a million Ceylonese” were disenfranchised. “Sinhala Only in 24 hours” stones were laid in 1956. The stones were rammed with blood in 1958, 1977 and in 1983. The obduracy off successive GoSL to address the grievances of minorities was leading us to Nowhere-land.
Rest is history. Do we deserve to be forced to beg for “more time” from UNHRC annually?
/
Edwin Rodrigo / March 20, 2017
WHO WON?
What matters here is WHO WON. Not HOW and WHY. The winner takes it all and we are the winners and the —— were the losers. Who cares about UNHCR? They may make a big noise, bark at us just like those pets who bark at even shadows to please the human masters. Some of those pets bark and look at the master to check how much he is pleased. They know the size of the chunk of meat they get depends on how pleased the master is.
The UNHCR is just doing some barking because their paymasters (The TISO – The Tamil International Something or the Other) pays them well – provided the barks are loud and frequent. They can afford to and are only too happy to pay. The money does not come from them. On the contrary some of the money goes to fatten their own pockets as commissions.
The money actually comes from the poor Tamils in this country and some of those people who have gone abroad as refugees and doing an honest job suffer in silence when the TISO grabs part of it. There is no other option but to do so – unless you want your throat slashed, Jihadi John style.
See what happened when some UN agency barked at Israel. The lead barker had to resign. In our case it is not so bad for the barker. We only have to be patient. Normally the barking seems to be related to the phase of the moon. Anyway, there is nothing to worry. With our budget problems and the UNP party fund shortage, we cannot pay them to stop the barking. We have to be patient.
Theory: There is a theory going around that the UNHCR barking is related to the phases of the moon. But this is completely wrong. It is related to the day of the month. The day being related to the time salaries are coming. As they say in SL when the ‘coconut plucking’ (පොල් කැඩිල්ල) is due. This is the time TISO goes in to high gear extorting, stealing, robbing and even begging. Their pets (UNHCR) are just making sure that the chunks of meat will come as they usually do in sufficient quantities and quality.

This is a disgusting politician to write an artivce like this. He simply was not in a battle field as a soldier. So, he bahses soldiers.
If Mangala Samaraweera has read war histories, he should understand why 200,000 women were declared “heroine mothers” after the Bangaldeshi – Western pakistan war. Sri lankan soldiers did not do that kind of things. You need to read the definition of a soldier in the dictionary. It explains who a soldier is. Those days, they started seting fire to the whole village and then massacaring people.
Samraweera as a man simply can not understand others emotions. It is not robots who fought the war. It is humans who fought the war. Sri lankan soldiers tried their best to save Tamils yet when they see their brothers in the battle field blown into pieces it is common human emotions go to hatred and revenge.

He is saying when the child (Mangala) told the Police that he had no idea where his father went, but, the naturally idiot father (Gunaratne) came out of the haystack and told “Child I did not go anywhere but hiding under the stack for police”. That is the stupidity Mangala is pointing out. Can you get or not yet?
Unlike Old Royals, Mangala’s bosses have not asked for share in the loots. They said you to keep it, but they want only the name of saving the war heroes (you criminals) who saved country. You guys are jealousy misers enough not allow even that goes to Mangala’s team so attacking Mangala without listening to his talks.
One man of two jealousy brothers went into penance. Seeing this, other one sat in front on the other side of the river. God appeared and asked the first one what he wanted. He opened his eyes to see his brother on the other side. He asked only to destroy one of his eyes. God went to the other one, only to hear of double of what that’s brother got. Alas! As soon as his both eyes were gone, he cried loud and cursed his brother destroying him. That one came to him and told “Brother! Jealous has destroyed both of us”.

Look Jim, do not try to absolve the security forces from blame. True they saved many Tamils even giving them their rations while going hungry and some of them got blown up to pieces for the trouble they took.
One has to maintain the correct perspective in these things. They may have saved 1000 upon thousands of Tamils. But they killed their Spherical God Prabha. I ask you are even a million equal to one special God like that? He is the only God who has that shape in the universe. There are spherical planets, spherical satellites, spherical, spherical stars and even spherical galaxies. But there are no spherical Gods. Tamils have lived in North and East part of Illankai for thousands of years, We Tamils in Illankai have nothing to do with Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu belongs to Tamils of India not to Tamils of Illankai. Tamils are neither occupiers nor aggressors of Srilanka.

The International Truth and Justice Project has released a damning report about Sri Lanka and its security forces that still continue to operate with impunity.
Please google and read. It is very damning. Parts of it
” This level of militarization is unacceptable eight years after the war. It also demonstrates that the security forces continue to operate with impunity. Speaking about the change in Sri Lanka since the new government came into power in January 2015, the activist said the intrenational approach towards Sri Lanka has shifted 180 degrees.
“Where once there would have been intolerance and frustration with the Rajapaksas now there is patience and a willingness to give more time. In terms of the situation inside the country, clearly the atmosphere has eased and activists have more space in which to function, the Human Rights Commission has credible leadership but still lacks capacity and generally civil rights have improved in the south.”
However in the North the situation still has not improved, she said adding that the new government has done nothing to investigate the very grave allegations of system crimes set out in the [UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights] OHCHR Investigation report
However in the North the situation still has not improved, she said adding that the new government has done nothing to investigate the very grave allegations of system crimes set out in the [UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights] OHCHR Investigation report.
“While there is a great deal of glib talk about reconciliation; it is extremely shallow as reconciliation involves a reckoning and an acknowledgement of the truth about the past including past violations,” she said adding that there is a “structural and institutional problem” in the country which unless addressed will result in ongoing violations and abuses.
“Reform is urgently needed for Sinhalese and Muslims as well as Tamils,” the ITJP Executive Director said.
Speaking about the accountability, Ms. Sooka said while a political and economic solution to the conflict is absolutely essential, it does not preclude that accountability and addressing entrenched impunity for serious crimes is equally important.
She said the OHCHR has been very clear that a domestic process will not work to address accountability and the ITJP would like to see them impress this point on the international community more forcefully.

We need to ask two simple questions as comments for Mongala Samaraweera?
1. What is Managala Samaraweera has done to our country?
Answer: He an other politicians have been living on hard earned tax payers money and doing nothing for their entire life time.
2. What is Kamal Gunratne and other soldiers have done?
Answer: They sacrificed their lives. They fought real hard battles to secure the peace and harmony in our mother land.
Therefore, We should not worry too much when “Dogs and jackals are howling”.

“1. What is Managala Samaraweera has done to our country?”
He has been trying to save war criminal’s bump since he was appointed foreign minister. So far he has done a good job compare to GL. He had made sure that there won’t be any serious war crime investigation, any independent commission, no foreign judges, no more sanctions by EU, …….
2. What is Kamal Gunratne and other soldiers have done?
Who knows? Perhaps made lot of money out of war, killed more innocent civilians than any other war criminals, lied through teeth, made many widows and orphans, ….
Remember it was a war without witness.
I suggest you familiarise yourself with what is happening in this island.

Referring to this book and the crimes spelled out: how do you call these criminals “War Hero’s”?
/
EDWIN RODRIGO / March 19, 2017
Guys, do not get excited about what Mangala says. It is just a good advertisement for Kamal’s book. You ask why he is doing it?
Well, it is certainly not because he is worried about the war crimes aspect. He is doing it because he expects a commission from the Author. Being a Minister of this government, Mangala cannot help it. He wants a commission from everything.
Soon the Americans, British and the likes will start buying the book and Kamal may become the first Sri Lankan to earn the reputation of writing a Bestseller.
P.S.: Who knows, the book may even get translated to Norwegian, Swedish and finally in Tamil too (courtesy, the Tamil International something or the other).

Mr Samaraweera
Is telling the truth, how uncomfortable it may be, wrong? Major General Kamal Gunaratne needs to be applauded for blowing the whistle with his first hand experiences but, on the other hand, if there are discrepancies in his book, he should be sued for publishing untruths. By publicly announcing that Kamal Gunaratne ‘betrayed War Heroes’, you have proved your self as a man with no integrity. You are no better than the others who are trying to shove the dirt under the carpet.
War crimes happen, from mass killings of non combatants to atrocities in the heat of the battle. Recently, a Sargent Major of the British Army who had done 2 tours of Afghanistan, had his previous murder sentence for killing a wounded rebel in cold blood, which had been caught on camera, overturned to manslaughter due to the pressure from his comrades, citing ‘burn out’ (combat ‘fatigue’). It was still considered a crime but of lesser seriousness. Whether the terrorists committed similar or even worse atrocities is another story but the armed forces of a democratic country needs to be disciplined. That is the difference between the armed forces & terrorists. Combatants who go on rampage, indiscriminately killing, raping & looting are not heroes, how ever heroic they may have been in combat.
So lets get this behind us now. Atrocities happened, that’s a fact, just like in any war situation around the world. Lets investigate & make the judgement. Everybody deserves justice & nobody is above the law, no matter the situation. In Germany, school children are taught about the Holocaust & the war. They are taken on field trips to the death camps so that such inhuman acts are never repeated. We should also acknowledge the past, however shameful it may be to make sure it never happens again & we could be proud of our armed services.

It is very unfair Mangala Samraweera like person criticizing war heroes, becasue everybody kow he was against the war and was friendly with the LTTE RUMP.
It is not a decent society when politicians talk that cheap. In the western society, Mangala Samraweera has resigned from the seat by now and his political career is over.
Because as a politician he showed his honesty, integrety, rrsponsibility etc., But, Sri lanka is fked up every way. These are the typical politicians who becomes Mahinda Rajapakses, JRJS, RPs when they have opportunity.
/
EDWIN RODRIGO / March 20, 2017
Jim, you say LTTE TRUMP? Are you sure? because I thought it was LTTE Hillary not LTTE TRUMP.
TRUMP may become LTTE TRUMP someday, who knows what these Americans are up to. But the candidate who was supporting LTTE was Hillary as indicated by the coconut bashing and the contributions to the Gates Foundation.

“This book is the Army’s biggest betrayal,”
Not sure if I missed it, but the Foreign Minister never says that the book is a lie. What does that say?
From the way the Sri Lankan state (including the Police and the military) behaved towards its own Tamil citizens in the various anti-Tamil pogroms of the past, it is clear only an independent international investigation will find the truth behind what happened in 2008/09.

Sinhala Crimes Against Humanity / March 20, 2017
Sinhalese soldiers are notorious sexual predators and serial killers and in the 80s were described as the most undisciplined army outside Africa:
In January 2000, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) issued an urgent appeal concerning the increased rape of Tamil women by the Sri Lankan Army: “The Sri Lankan security forces are using systematic rape and murder of Tamil women to subjugate the Tamil population… Impunity continues to reign as rape is used as a weapon of war in Sri Lanka.”
In a statement to the UN in 1998, the World Organisation against Torture observed: “Sri Lankan soldiers have raped both women and young girls on a massive scale, and often with impunity, since reporting often leads to reprisals against the victims and their families.”
“The consistent policy of rape and violence against Tamil women that we have documented for many years is a fundamental military tactic of the Sri Lankan forces,” International Educational Development, an NGO, also told the UN that year.
A high-ranking Sri Lankan military officer admitted the following to professor Carolyn Nordstrom in 1985:
“It’s crazy, it’s completely crazy. I can’t control my troops. It’s awful up there. One of the soldiers [government, largely Sinhalese] is hit by a guerrilla [Tamil], or they run over a land mine, or a bomb explodes, and they go nuts. It’s been building up and building up, and they just go wild. The guerrillas have long since melted away, and the soldiers turn their fury on the first available target. Of course, the only people around are civilians. They open fire on everyone, they destroy everything in sight, they rape and torture people they catch on the streets or in their homes, they lob bombs into homes and schools, markets and city streets. I’ve tried to stop them, I try to control the situation. I can’t. None of us commanders can—though god knows some don’t try. We can’t discipline them. We can’t prosecute them. We can’t dismiss them—we’d have no army left if we did. The situation up north is completely out of control, and there isn’t a damn thing we can do about it.”

Sinhala Crimes Against Humanity / March 20, 2017
A recently declassified CIA document from June 1984 titled, ‘Sri Lanka: The Challenge of Communal Violence’ revealed:
“According to press accounts, Sinhalese soldiers pulled Tamil youths off buses at random and executed them beside the road at several places in Jaffna during April 1984. During that same month, Sinhalese soldiers opened fire on a crowd of women and children in a crowded market outside Jaffna, wounding and killing more than 20 civilians. Although the Army has claimed that such incidents are necessary to maintain control over a hostile population that supports the militant Tamil insurgents, we believe these reprisals illustrate the failure of Colombo to control the military and use it effectively.”
Another declassified CIA document from September 1986 titled, ‘Sri Lanka: The Growing Insurgency’, also revealed:
“According to US Embassy reporting, the junior officer corps is composed largely of young Sinhalese with hardline views toward the communal conflict and is among those groups pressing hardest for a military solution. The rank and file are mostly Sinhalese peasants who often see the conflict in ethnic rather than political terms. As a result, units are often poorly led and prone to draw little distinction between insurgents and Tamil civilians, leading to attacks on civilians and a further hardening of Tamil attitudes toward the government.”
This proves genocidal intent of the Sinhalese military!

Sinhala Crimes Against Humanity, your name is too long. Shall we make it Sinhala Crimes Against Tamils? I know that you will have no strong objections against that because (1) You Tamils don’t care about others very much. (2) We killed not only Tamil people but their most important God Spherical Prabha, who uses a very fat chicken as his official vehicle. Who cares about the mortals? Not us the Sinhalese anyway. So we have to amend the name as Sinhala Crimes against Deviya.
Oh My God! I am sorry, I should say, Oh my Deviya! Now I have the answer that I have been searching for ever since 1980. Why did these guys call themselves Tigers (Diviya in Sinhala). The answer was there right in front of my eyes all this time and I did not see it until now. They named themselves Liberation Tigers of Tamil Deviya. The Deviya being the Chiken riding Deviya – Spherical Prabha.
