Mangala’s Chief-Of-Staff Thusitha Halloluwa Ducks Police

Thusitha Halloluwa, close aide of Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Chief-of-Staff at his ministry, has ignored summons from the Kadawatha Police over a complaint that he threatened a journalist, Colombo Telegraph learns.

Thusitha Halloluwa

Halloluwa, as Colombo Telegraph reported earlier, was recorded making a scathing attack on a journalist who exposed financial irregularity in a state institution running into millions of rupees. His tirade was first reported by SL Vlog, presented by Dharshana Handungoda, using recorded evidence. That clip was later played on News First, the news channel of MTV.

However, sources close to Halloluwa told Colombo Telegraph that he, Halloluwa, upon hearing of this complaint, had called the Office in Charge of the Kadawatha Police Station and inquired about it.

Apparently the complainant had said that someone had come to his house and threatened him and that he suspected Halloluwa of instigation. The complaint had been lodged in the Miscellaneous Complaints Branch of the Kadawatha Police.

Halloluwa had inquired if he is required to give a statement at the Police Station, but had apparently been informed that he could do so later.

Halloluwa has claimed that he has worked as the Media Secretary to Ministers, Amarasiri Dodangoda and Anura Priyadharshana Yapa. He claims he was Secretary and Coordinating Secretary of Minister Mangala Samaraweera and later a Press Officer at Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s Media Unit.

I watch SL VLog regularly on you tube. The service to the nation by Darshana in exposing the corrupt politiciancs of all parties is priceless. I wish him continuing success in educating the voters of this country so they will hopefully elect representatives who are not tainted in the future. The unfortunate saga of the country has been that we overthrow crooks and elect another set of crooks to rob the nation.

We write volumes of excesses by politicians and their acolytes. The cardinal principle is the rule of law. It is missing. The root cause of this is the bad example set by successive governments. My mind runs to incidents of throwing stones at judges houses. Why? They delivered a verdict not favorable to those in power at that time. Then all kinds of indirect intimidation through very polite telephone calls to judges. Instances of “impeachment” resulting in the removal of judge/s under controversial circumstances. Throwing insults and verbal tirades against judges under the cover of parliamentary privileges. Manipulation in appointments of judges is another area that has affected the quality of the justice finally meted out and that has a longer history than intimidation. My view is that political leaders must set the example to respect the law if the rule of law is to prevail. Although it appears to be outside this subject, the freedom of journalism too must be respected, because the publication various instances help to end the misdirection of the executive. The test of a politician is his ability to face criticism. Either maiming (even killing or disappearing) or intimidating journalists will not foster the much publicized “Yahapalanaya”.

I think in the next parliamentary election Mangala will lose his seat. He is so unpopular among Sinhala voters in Matara, only Muslims will vote for him.

Yes I am from Matara and I vote.
