Manivannan Incident & UN Hypocrisy

By TU Senan

TU Senan

The stories of Tamil lobbyists storming the corridors of UNHRC must be recorded for posterity. In future generations no one will understand the efforts expended and the sweat excreted in the name of lobbyism. An astonished diplomat did ask ‘why are you all here?’ The poor fellow genuinely didn’t know. Why Tamils from all over the world swarm “his palace” had remained a mystery for him over the last years. Little did he know, one of the mythical doors in the UN somehow holds the key to the future of Tamils.

From Australia to Canada, Tamils arrive on their yearly pilgrimage in March to somehow unlock that fabled door. Ah, if only others knew the pain and the preparations behind the annual trip. Ceremonial ties and slogans will start to flow from February onwards. Strategic spins and speeches will take over the Tamil media, announcing the arrival of the messiah. All will come to a damp squib in the end, of course, with one resolution, which by the way is “co-sponsored” these days with Sri Lanka. Rest assured though, the suit will only rest till next March when the procession begins all over again.

This year however was marked by a little encounter of a different kind. Man of the “March” for this year surely belongs to the one and only Manivannan. This incident goes to the very heart of the UN and Sri Lankan officials so much so that they almost want to make it an example of what not to do.

The Sinhala nationalist pro-government media in Sri Lanka boiled. ‘These stalwarts of the LTTE must be stopped,’ was the cry. Many screamed. From the national news agency such as The Island, to Lankasri, the UN news was the hot topic. This incident even warranted a paragraph in the official oral presentation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights “Prince” Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein. Here is what he warned:

“I am disturbed to hear reports of intimidation of members of civil society here in the Palais des Nations. Assistant Secretary-General Andrew Gilmour, the system-wide coordinator for action on reprisals, will be looking into this, and I trust, Mr President, you will also give these cases close attention.”

What on earth took place then? What took place is something that proved one unknown point – that not all Tamils are that “stupid”. The yearly journey to the great palace is not merely due to utter mindlessness. Passion and anger and desire for justice runs through some veins. Unlike The Island’s portrayal of Manivannan, he had nothing to do with LTTE. Nor has he ever engaged in any violent activities in the past. You can’t get a more passive human than him. But his passionate question is a fully valid one. It was a question about Sarath Weerasekara.

But allow us to provide a bit of background to this Sarath Weerasekara. To say he was a rear admiral in the Sri Lankan navy is to underplay his role as truly one of the hangmen of the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime during the genocidal war in 2009.

He was in fact a chief of staff in the Sri Lankan navy and a director general of the civil defence force (CDF). It is well known that the CDF has acted as a paramilitary force, then as an official part of the Sri Lankan navy committed war crime and sexual abuses. The UN’s OHCHR Investigation on Sri Lanka (OISL) report records that at least 11 members of the CDF were accused of sexual violence. Ah, you may argue, they were largely acquitted – but the OISL also acknowledges that evidence suggests that “members of security forces enjoy impunity”.

Weerasekara was also a vice-president of the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress. Being a strong supporter of the former dictatorial president Mahinda, Weerasekara was an arch-defender of the bloody executive presidency and voted against the 19th amendment.

Tamil activists have been exposing the hypocrisy of the UN in allowing a war criminal such as Weerasekara to come to the UN while it pretends to defend human rights. The International Buddhist relief organisation (IBRO) has UN accreditation. It is IBRO that invites Sarath and allows him to speak at their fringe event called “truth and justice’. It is not clear whether they went ahead with this meeting.

But not so surprisingly the right-wing lobbyists, the British Tamils Forum organised their usual fringe event. The BTF is able to organise this meeting with the help of Pasumai Thayagam and People for Equality and Relief in Sri Lanka (PEARL). Sarath was present in this meeting. It is in this meeting Mr Manivannan from the TGTE confronted the hypocrisy.

Manivannan said “This war criminal is coming down here – sitting here and talking to us. [UN] is providing immunity for them. I call upon the Swiss government to arrest him –HERE. Because we have got evidence that he has committed lots of crimes…”

The response came swiftly. Samaraweera showed what stuff he is made of when he shouted “treason”. While demanding that Manivannan should be tried for treason, he shouted that it is the “soldiers who saved the Tamils from the clutches of the LTTE”! Later he even claimed “I have given blood to the Tamil people –my blood is running through the veins of Tamil people”. His supporters started taking pictures of other activists in the meeting – an open threat that “we have got your details” – a demonstration of how business was conducted under the former dictatorial regime.

All this in the name of Buddhism, truth and justice. Obviously no mention of the eleven solders under his command who were accused of committing sexual abuse against Tamils during the massacre. The All Ceylon Buddhist Congress, working with the IBRO, also contributed to him having the opportunity to address the human rights council. He walked in with a wounded soldier, a master stunt he hoped, and claimed to welcome the international investigation – that is only to investigate the crimes of the LTTE.

The UN once again stands exposed in its hypocrisy. If there is any meaning to the justice they talk about Sarath Weerasekara should have been arrested as Manivannan called for. To the horror of Tamil activists, except Manivannan, the rest of the lobbyists remained “cool” in the face of such hypocrisy.

This incident reveals the many rights and wrongs of the political situation with respect to the Tamils in Sri Lanka. The lobbyists have lost sight of their main goal – ie to prosecute the criminals who are complicit in the massacre of 2009. Instead they are now for business. The UN and the west are confident enough that they can continue to do what they want to do and get the support of some of the stooge leaders in the TNA and in the diaspora. The UN and the western establishment are confident these ‘leaders’ will do the job for them. People like Manivannan who still have passion for justice will be systematically side-lined as “hardliners”. Meanwhile the Mahinda gangs still roam free, claiming to give blood to Tamil women.

But support for this political approach is diminishing among Tamils. There will emerge a new strategy with a new perspective, one that will seek unity with all progressive forces regardless of religion and ethnicity. These so-called Tamil leaders are already feeling the heat. No wonder they have to hold meetings with maximum security and move to undisclosed secret locations, etc.

The last paragraph of this article quoted verbatim is of interest:

“But support for this political approach is diminishing among Tamils. There will emerge a new strategy with a new perspective, one that will seek unity with all progressive forces regardless of religion and ethnicity. These so-called Tamil leaders are already feeling the heat. No wonder they have to hold meetings with maximum security and move to undisclosed secret locations, etc.”

This means again there will be underground activity resulting in another bout of violence because there seems to be no way to seek relief. It is incidental that as reported in CT, one Ms. K. Francis of Puthukuduyirippu echoed in private the similar feelings that there are signs of another outbreak of violence. The result would be another bout of war and in war nobody wins but all are losers.

The last paragraph also indicates that attempts to unite regrdless of religion and ethnicity is causing “Tamil Leaders” to feel the heat. This is very disturbing. Countries which have virtually no resources became a first world oasis in the desert of third world entirely because of the unity of its people and the policies of meritocracy that supports such unity. I don’t think Sri Lanka would be committing a crime in following such a path.

Thank you very mush Your Excellency Sarath Weerasekara for exposing the lying barbaric Eelam sore losers to the world community.

These barbaric Eelamists go to Switzerland to talk about Tamil issues for an hour or two and then spending their ill-gotten money, take 7 day luxury holidays, staying at 5 star hotels, traveling business class, shopping, etc.

Tamil problem in Sinhale Island (Sri Lanka) has created many Eelamist multimillionaires and Multi billionaires, one guy doing his time in US jail.

Tamil diaspora organizations have accumulated mass wealth through credit card scams, benefits and welfare frauds, insider trading, illegal goods trafficking, and all sorts of illegal activities.

World must know that His excellency Sarath Weerasekara is a war-hero.

Mr. Tu Senan, I think you acknowledge the following facts:
    1. Pirabaharan and his Tiger group killed more Tamils and Muslims than Sinhalese. Otherwise, they can not be the ‘most ruthless terrorist organization of the world’.
    2. When he killed Rajiv Gandhi, India decided as a principal not to support the so-called Tamil cause in Sri Lanka. (India’s current support is just a lip-service)!
    3. Instead they decided to support the Sri Lankan Government to finish/punish the Tigers with their leader. IPKF could not do it but India decided to hand over the job to a more determined person; That’s why Mahinda R said that he fought India’s war against the LTTE!
    4. What’s happening in UNHRC is just a replay of a drama, customized to suit the international forum. You may (as you have well-said in this article) call it hypocrisy.
    5. Next year, Manivannan and his group will be further criticized, isolated, and marginalized by other more powerful groups, individuals, and countries.
    6. Many others will bring in evidence against the LTTE, and TGTE and the world will be convinced that it is a good thing that the Rajapaksa government finished off Pirabhakaran and his tigers before it became an international headache.
    7. Tamils who dreamed about a separate country in Sri Lanka made two huge international blunders: One through Pirabaharan (you know what it is); second by Diaspora Tamils: that’s to go against US presidential candidate Donald Trump!! (I don’t think you’re part of so-called Tamils for Hilary, but for us, general readers, you’are unfortunately not excluded)!!!
    End of story.

You talk about hypocrisy in UNHRC! Just read this from Britain:
During her speech triggering the Brexit exit process, Prime Minister Theresa May said, “We are going to make our own decisions and our own laws. We are going to take control of things that matter most to us………. We will take control of our laws and bring an end to the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice…”
Now Sirisena-Wickremasinghe government, highly praised by the West is taking control of everything including the Tamil issue!
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights “Prince” Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein has warned:
“I am disturbed to hear reports of intimidation of members of civil society here in the Palais des Nations…”
Are you guys conspiring to commit a third blunder?

Although one cannot comment on the goings on in Geneva without being there, it is clear the UN has failed the Tamil people miserably, during the war and post-war. The role of the UN is to appear to do something when they are actually not.

War crimes are pursued only if a world power wants to do so, and no other world power is blocking it.

  • 9

War Criminals Sri Lanka thinks that they can get away with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, and by exerting pressure with their armed forces, they can further continue to suppress and subjugate the Tamil victims in their own homeland.

The Tamil Diaspora will continue to agitate and demonstrate until justice and freedom is served to our people.

It is the hypocrisy of some “cool faced” Tamil individuals and certain groups who practise the politics of appeasement, and selfishness that confuses the IC, with division, for a strong action plan against Sri Lanka. These elements are delaying and prolonging the pain and suffering of our people and not helping in resolving for a permanent political solution for the Tamil Homeland, and need to be exposed.

We need to float like a butterfly and stink like a bee, and to catch where we can, is the motto. Sarath’s face expressed it all. International jurisdiction and prosecution outside the UN box.

    Height of Hypocrisy!

The two countries, USA and UK that initiated the Resolution at UNHRC proposing to investigate war crimes, crimes against humanity and violation of international law have committed more war crimes, crimes against humanity and violated international law than any other country in the world. Some of the persons who are responsible for committing these crimes are: George W. Bush (Senior), George W. Bush (Junior), Bill Clinton, Barak Obama, Dick Cheney, Hilary Clinton, John Kerry, Tony Blair, David Cameron.

This reminds me the story about mother crab and baby crabs!

UNHRC has not done anything against these war criminals. Hypocrisy!!!

“Little did he know, one of the mythical doors in the UN somehow holds the key to the future of Tamils. From Australia to Canada, Tamils arrive on their yearly pilgrimage in March to somehow unlock that fabled door.”

J.R.Jayawardene has told ‘If Tamils want peace, we will give peace. If they want war, we will give them war’ Tamils opted for war and they got it. Tamil Diaspora pumped millions of Dollars to LTTE and at the end all that money got flushed in to Nandikadal lagoon. The money that Tamil Diaspora is putting in to this yearly pilgrimage will one day get flushed in a UN toilet.

Trump’s administration has announced that they will handle human rights issues privately. This is a major departure from Obama’s administration. Theresa May has told that she will not allow her army to be investigated. Let us wait and see what will happen in 2019. In the meantime Tamil activists should keep beating the drum louder and louder because the international community is slowly going deaf.

J.R.Jayawardene has told ‘If Tamils want peace, we will give peace. If they want war, we will give them war’
Who wanted war then? There was uncalled for anti-Tamil violence in 1977 and Amirthalingam complained about it. Is that wanting war?
JRJ unleashed communal violence repeatedly— and on an unprecedented scale in 1983. That was followed by military repression and then civil war, thanks to some foreign meddling as well.
What did JRJ achieve eventually, other than bringing foreign troops to this land and the imposing of an ‘Accord’?

      The economy is a mess.
If we only put our minds to solving the national question— ignoring extremists on all sides —all external threat will be irrelevant.

Thank you Senan. It is a misfortune that the Tamils have to fight on two fronts – two formidable forces- the trecherous TNA leadership and the Sinhala-Buddhist nationalists. Both these forces have the backing of mainstream media, armed forces, military intelligence, the RAW and what not? Mind you, TNA bigwigs enjoying power and perks may not hesitate to silence dissent and have young dissenters physically eliminated with the help of military intelligence. Such ruthless rascals, they are.

This TGTE must be made up of all the Dalits, who took residence overseas, thanks to Mr Pirahaparan.

Vellala Party Leader Sampathar’s deputy and the potential future Leader Abraham said that Diaspora is ready to invest Millions if not Billions in Srilanka, as soon as Abraham blows the whistle. Not the Whistle Blowers type mind you.

This Vellala Kid Abraham is more powerful than even the Leader of the JO, which has a voter base of over 6 Million .

Dr Batalanda Ranil has entrusted the Vellala Kid, the total responsibility to draft the new Constitution.

And the Kid said the other day that everything is ready, and all are willing to partition the Mahavamsa Land.

That is the impression one got from his remarks about the progress of Batalanada Ranil’s Steering Committee Meets.

Abraham’s buddy and partner in London Suren Surendran is working hand in glove with the Yahapalana Foreign Minister Samare.

In fact what Suren says Samare does.

Samare even wanted to have a Yahapalana Exhibition to celebrate the UNP, Diaspora and Sira Alliance.

And display Diaspora contributions and achievements.

Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara should not be taken seriously as he never delivered what he promised in the public on the record.

He is another public racist (bit too loud)who opposed singing Tamil National anthem in public events for the simple reason he thought the constitution banned it. No such provision is in the constitution. Further Tamil is also a national language.

I am sure he must have thought he had read Mahawansa and not the constitution. The constitution does not prevent Tamil National Anthem being sung in public events.

Could anyone read out the relevant chapters from the constitution to this public racist please. If I remember correctly, this man promised twice to go to courts in this regard.

Did he go to Geneva for the sole purpose of defending the war criminals or get permission to ban Tamil and English completely from business of governance in Sri Lanka?

    Hypocrisy is everywhere?
Between 1987-90 the IPKF (Indian Peace Keeping Force) suffered around 1,200 killed in action and several thousand wounded. The LTTE casualties are not known (but definitely significant). Tamil Civilians Killed By IPKF is 15,000-20,000.
What does UNHRC say about this?
These civilian casualties are also conveniently transferred to the account of the Sri Lankan armed forces?

I read the above comment sent by John on another Web.
When you look back, Tamils would someday thank Mahinda Rajapaksa (who is being hated today by Diaspora Tamils for ruining their day-dream); but they should know that he saved their baby generation and many more generations to come. Otherwise, those who go to school today would have been slave soldiers carrying rusty AK47s under Pirabaharan’s polpot regime.
Do you know there are growing negative concerns about the UNHRC and ICC at this moment. I read a Globe & Mail front page article today about ICC’s bias toward certain countries and South Africa has threatened to pull out of it as a result.
It has been a proven fact that certain powerful world leaders used these so-called international organizations to maintain their hegemony over small nations and Tamils should understand that they have become the ‘bite’ of their evening get-togethers called ‘sessions’. Even after the US presidential election tamils have unfortunately not realized the truth and reality. End of story!

I fully agree with Native Veddah that this Sarath Weerasekera is an empty vessel

I was in a diaspora delegation in Geneva 2017. We Tamils were not afraid of Sarath Weerasekear,he is minnow. We were laughing about him and his antics. But we were genuinely scared of the Sinhala journalist, Keerthi Warnakulasuriya, the old man in striped maroon tie behind Sarath W (see photo of this article). He is vicious and we knew he could destroy our movement with a strike of his most powerful pen

Geneva is not a place to be afraid of anyone.

There is a rumour going around that TU Senan and Manivannan are cousins. So family members scratching each others backs, at the expense of our Tamils Struggle. Shame on you Senan

I was told that Sarath Weerasekera was known as Tory Sarath in the Navy,to distinguish from the innumerable others with the same forename.Upon inquiry,I was told that it was because what was above his neck was a Torricellian vacuum!
