Maveerar Naal – The Need For A Collective Memorialization In Tamil Eelam

By Nimal Vinayagamoorthy

Nimal Vinayagamoorthy

Every year, the month of November is an emotional and moving time where Eelam Tamils around the world and supporters of the Tamil struggle collectively stop to commemorate the unimaginable sacrifices made by our freedom fighters, our martyr-heroes, our Maveerar. Leaving behind their dreams and separating from their families, our brothers and sisters in Eelam sacrificed their lives to free us safe from the enduring political and ethnic violence Tamils were experiencing on the island of Sri Lanka.

The first Maveerar Naal ceremony was held on the 27th of November 1989, honouring the thousands of fallen soldiers. This date was selected based on our first fallen hero, Lt. Shankar Sathiyanathan in 1982. Since then, it was the only day of the year, the then LTTE Supremo addressed the Tamils and laid down the objectives of the struggle and the charted the future course of action.

The LTTE was a voluntary force and derived strength from the commitment of its cadre to take up arms to fight against brutal Sinhala regies bent upon wiping out the Tamils from Sri Lanka. In this violent struggle for the right to self-determination of Tamils, thousands of young Tamil women and men have laid down their lives for a cause, a very dear cause, for every Tamil to escape the clutches of the oppressive Sinhala regimes and re-establish the lost homeland of the Tamils.

The Maveerar Naal is a holy day for Eelam Tamils world over, since 2009, even Tamils in India have been commemorating this very special day. For every Eelam Tamils there is a very emotional, spiritual attachment to observe this day. It is observing a collective memory. It is a day to vent out the emotions and for the community to gather together. Families in the north and east all had at least someone sacrifice their sacred lives for the freedom of Eelam Tamils. This day helps promote the Tamil community’s social recovery from the violent conflict, and bring to light the injustices and discrimination the Maaveerar and us as a population have been through. Hence, Maveerar Naal is a Tamil National memorialization day which must to accepted and respected. It is a public day and needs to be observed at a public place to grieve someone very dear.

Memorialization is extremely important in order to keep memories alive, to mark the highest sacrifices made by our women and men, and to refresh and recommit ourselves to continue the struggle for transitional justice and accountability which is being constant undermined by national and international bodies of power. Memorialization is a highly politicalized process which reflect the will of those in power. In a place like Sri Lanka, where the governing body which perpetuated the mass atrocities including the war crimes and genocide continues to govern the victims, it is merely impossible for Tamils to take part in the process of memorialization.

Whether the Sinhalese and the world like it or not, those who fought and were killed in the conflict did not fight their war, they fought our war, a war for to seek equality, justice and restore the Tamil pride which we enjoyed for many thousands of years and suddenly had been deprived of. We have been living under Sinhala colonization since the British decolonization in 1948. No war can be just, but states have a duty towards civilians. It is our historical duty to remember those who laid down their lives for a cause very dear to most of the Tamils around the world.

The Maveerar, fought for their people’s cause, hence they are our HEROES. The terrorism label given to the LTTE group of Tamil freedom fighters who fought for the peace and freedom of all Tamils in Sri Lanka, is a clear depiction of the Sri Lankan government’s effort to diminish the Tamil struggle and deny the rights of the Tamil population, forcing them to the status of a permanent minority in their own land. This terrorism label continues to deny any opportunities for the Tamil struggle today to seek the help of international governing bodies.

All our war hero’s cemeteries which once stood up with pride on November 27th, are razed to the ground and converted as military playgrounds or areas under army occupation. The mothers, wives, sisters and relatives of our heroes cannot even visit the places where our heroes are buried. Respecting the dead is revered in every culture, the Sri Lankan state does not have this culture to respect the dead if they are ideologically opposed to you, hence they treat even the dead as their enemies and brand the families of the dead as ‘terrorist families’. One must remember that one’s terrorist is another person’s hero if they are fighting for their people’s cause.

Across the world from Canada to Europe to Australia, the Eelam Tamils have observed the Maveerar Naal in the most peaceful manner and the respective governments are a testimony to the peaceful ways we have conducted this special Tamil Day. Maveerar Naal is not a glorification of war or a propaganda to restart an armed conflict, it is a day of prayers, offering and meeting members of our community to grieve together as a collective duty of our community to our beloved dead ones.

The Rajapaksa brothers have taken pride in proclaiming that they have eliminated LTTE from the face of the earth, if they have so confidently done that, why are they still denying the Tamils to observe November 27th as a day to respect their dead heroes? What is the state scared of? Whom are they scared of? The dead will not come back to fight another war but they will certainly inspire us to continue our fight towards the Tamils right to self-determination sans weapons, in a peaceful democratic manner. On the contrary memorialization will help the families as well as the young ones to remind them the horrors of the war and the violence that befalls on the whole community.  Denying this physical, emotional and psychological space is a denial and travesty of justice.

With great pride and honor, I salute our freedom fighters, our Maveerar who relentlessly fought in the battlefields till the end moment and dedicated their lives to their goal to secure the freedom of all Eelam Tamils. Honoring the fallen lives of our Maveerar, let us commemorate their unimaginable sacrifices and continue the Maveerar’s ultimate dream of securing freedom and the Tamil’s right to decide their political destiny.

The only peaceful solution to SL is to divide the island equitably into Tamil Elam and Sinhala Only Elam and allow Muslims the choice of joining any or go on their own. People should be relocated based on ethnicity into these nations and close the borders for good.

But if the demands are greedy (we want to live both here and there) then war is the only solution. If both groups can shed excessive greed there is a lasting solution. Time to split the island ethnically, equitably and peacefully.

Muslims are Tamils and Tamil speaking people. Religion cannot be brought into the picture at this stage.
Sinhala only Ealam should accomodate only Sinhala people and further sub division of Tamil Ealam into Hindu, Christian and Islamic sections is an issue to be settled among the Tamils.
Sinhalese would rather accomodate Hindu/Christian Tamils than Islamic Tamils for they share the same ethical norms while Islamic ethics are totally alien.

Another tamil diaspora living comfortably overseas with wishful thinking of peelam in order to collect terrrorist funds. Its over old man, please seek help and counseling. Go find your self determination for tamils in the nation of tamil nadu. Tamils in sri lanka can remember their dead at any time in the comfort of their home without banners of terror organizations and TNA housing flags. A freedom fight if non violent is a freedom fight but fighters with violence, suicide, killing of innocents are terrorists and no democratic sane country will allow terrorists to be remembered. Get that into your diaspora skull. Stop spreading more hate and ethnic disharomy. You will NEVER in your lifetime see a eelam. We the tamils, proud sinhalese, muslims, burghers all in Sri Lanka are Sri Lankans my old filled with hate toilet cleaninf Uncle!

The stupid state banned people physically gathering to remember their fallen heroes. It appears they are meeting on Zoom. Has stupid racist state taken any measures to ban zoomemberance? Will it also ban JVP remembering its leader and cadres?
What are Kamal and Shavendra proposing to do to prevent remembering their fallen heroes?

Kamal, Shavendra, Gota, and the rest of the 15,000 idling generals should use drone, Heli, ….satellites to spy, detect and destroy all computers which are being used during these remembrance days.

How come Gota, Mahinda and their entourage are seen among hundreds of people given that pandemic is so severe in some parts of the country?

Sri Lankan government commemorates the RANA VIRUVO who died in the war and the Sinhalese civilians killed by the LTTE. Pro-Tiger Tamils commemorate the MAVEERARS and the Tamils who were killed by the government forces. But who will commemorate the Tamil and Muslim civilians deliberately murdered by the MAVEERARS ? They are not even footnotes in the “history” of Eelam War. It is the mighty who write the history – whether they’re Sinhalese or Tamils makes no difference. From Aztecs to Zulus it is the same rotten story … it is the same selective memory … selective history.

These guys who fight to seek equality and justice do not give equality and justice to their fellow Tamils who have been branded as Dalits (Low caste). What kind of hypocrites!!

    Dear NV

“In a place like Sri Lanka, where the governing body which perpetuated the mass atrocities including the war crimes and genocide continues to govern the victims, it is merely impossible for Tamils to take part in the process of memorialisation”

I am a prominent supporter of remembering all the victims the Tamil Children and Sinhalese Children and the Muslim Children irrespective of the causes.

As a citizen of Sri Lanka I have never approved any causes by anyone to be legitimate be it the FP& TULF ventures (born through thuggery and killings and at gun point) / JVP ventures /Muslim Extremism Ventures…basically anyone points a gun at their elected GOSL in the name of solving a problem of any description already in the incorrect and unapproved by masses category hence is unlawful etc.

    • 3
      5

However they are all “our” children and we all let them down(Indians audacity to steel our children under the supervision of the FP/TULF) means all been given the opportunity to be part of the democratic process.

We have gone further that we have given our live, arms and limbs too to protect all that needed to be protected from the same armed children of ours that we took ownership too. Nothing was perfect in the dealings the JVP and Muslim will tell you the same.

There are great ways to remember our children who died for the wrong causes misguided by a bunch of politicians we know who…is to remove those parties from power from Jaffna & LTTE to be given the opportunity to field candidates and be elected to serve their masses?? without any partisan politics?? democratically??

      • 3
        6

How to remember our children should be based on what we deliver on the ground…success is falling down several times and getting up even more Times??…..each time we should know how to do what we set out to do better that is to deliver social justice?……….then we need to take stock of the social justice delivered to all vs few or is it at the expense of all the Nation of People etc??

Even one need to evlauate if one has made their “point” against all the odds to highlight injustices too?? their lies the victory vs loss too.

My Father Mr Thiagarajah put his neck out to make a point in 1981 to save the same children we are discussing today including the entire Nation of Children too…………it was not a loss but a victory…then again it is all about how we capitalise on that is what really matters??

        • 3
          6

One should focus on delivering justice with an understanding Peace and Reconciliation is not equal to Retribution. We should all remember all the Mother Lankan children who died in the process since Independence will be a way to show understanding of the real Nation building efforts required by us all from now onwards with mutual respect for everyones loss?? when one person loos we all loose is a fact?

So we should use all the knowledge we have about the planet now that we did not have then to deliver justice to all the Mother Lankan Children and remember all not the selective few is the point you may agree.

            6

We purposely did not build any rememberece and staues for my Father because his life and work is remebered through his deeds?? a life long work?? does not get buried by a bullet on a day by a blinded child one spent their life trying to protect??

So please work for a day we build a memorial for all Mother Lankan Children died since Independence that we all remember and pay tribute for a great foundation for a better tomorrow…

Way to pay tribute to all those children would be for us all to help our GOSL turn the Nation to into an Environmental paradise through series of study works and projects to build a sustainable future

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uZVx_dHXqY

Please share this with all diaspora children and come up with a various volunteer projects that will connect all the Sri Lankan children with their counterparts all around the world to build a futuristic world we can all invest our time and efforts to pay tribute to all our children who died for all the wrong causes ion our life time that we did nothing to stop…..may be we were all learning too in the same journey…

Please start up a website inviting Sri Lankan children who need educational assistance overseas and have them registered at this website..Sri Lankans children…(Tamil/Sinhala/Muslim++++).

Invite sponsors who will sponsor their studies and have these children placed in their homes during the studies with their children. Mix them up such Muslim children will stay at the Sinhala/Tamil family vis a vis.

Then have some of the foreign born children to come and study in our Universities…we should create a new paradigm for a better tomorrow.

This is what my father did all his over and beyond his job scopes..where every penny and every drop if sweat was invested in our children…results are amazing…it works…absolutely proven…please apply.

I think you got it all mixed up Bro…..this is about the children I grew up with (12-15 years of age) the real ‘victims’ from North and East stolen from Jaffna and taken to India to be brainwashed/train too kill people to be used for FP/TULF treachery/treason to my Nation Sri Lanka.

There was never any such need for ventures of this nature by any Citizens of Sri Lanka except the Rohana W on his return from Russia (rather interrupted his scholoraship) to deal with Indian expansionism in Sri Lanka??? He singlehandedly try to topple our GOSL?? followed up by the FP/TULF trying to do the same that went on until 2009.

                    Dear PK

                    (1) 1948 -The Indian Citizenship issue is not for FP and SJV to resolve but for the GOSL and Indian government period. Working the nose into someone else landscape am surprised the GP still survive to date as a Party when all they touched have perished including our children. Please remove this referencing from all your books except maybe mention that Jaffna Tamils who owned Tea Estates/never ask the upcountry Indians to come and settle in Jaffna is sufficient.

                    (2) 1956 – Sinhala Only act was the only saviour for the Nation which had no common identity and without this act and Late Hon SWRD sacrificing his life for his school mate SJV we would never have studied in Tamil?? it would have been just English and all the local civil service and courts would have been in English too. This language disenfranchised Majority of the Sinhalese and Majority of the Tamils in post Colonial era. Please remove this from your list of events that get shouted about as has no validity.

                      4

                      (3) 1977 – A separatism call by FP and TC their leaderships who were kicked out of their electorates in 1970 that really exposed the desperado’s in life. Most fraudulent election ever conducted under gun point/intimidation/killings of the FP oppononents since 1970-1977 and obtained a mandate for a separate state at gun point?? what a joke we all paid with our life’s. Just as a provoking act in 1956 and the riots that ensued this time TULF was demanding for more blood letting?? why??? who’s interest?? their call was answered and more innocent Tamils died??

                      (4) 1983 – Killing of the innocent Sri Lankan soldiers in Jaffna….TULF call was answered by more killing if the innocent Tamils.

                      (5) Until 2009 the same pattern continued with just about all parties sleeping with each other at some point in time including some orgies that resulted in the killing fields in Sri Lanka….there is no one here hold a moral ground except GOSL was charged with the responsibility to retain the sovereign status of the Nation that they delivered in 2009.

All other records are all about I did and you did of no significance as the land belongs to all some choose not to take up arms and kill their opponents….out of compassion.

“All over the West young Tamil children are being brainwashed with this highly selective history of Eelam.”

How did you come to your above conclusion?
Where did you get the idea?

Unlike their stupid parents they understand their world better than their home grown parochial relatives and their racist Sinhala stupid Buddhist cousins.

I am not much of a historian therefore I am willing to learn your version of EELAM. Please feel free to unleash it?

The second and third generations enjoy enough freedom and choices to make relatively balanced judgement, because they are exposed to different, progressive, liberal ideas, rule of law, …… don’t have to depend on local dumb ass politicians for their jobs, promotion, protection, … or for their future. Therefore the young adult living in the west irrespective of their race, religion, gender …their parent’s home region have no reason to fit into your racist agenda or depend on their parent to make up their mind. For them sky is the limit or beyond. Please stop judging them by your parochial standards.

Let’s see how children of racist Weerasekera, Weerawansa, Gota, … who continue to live in the west, going to turn out to be. Are they going to follow their racist parents?

Why did your brethren VP decide to celebrate his birthday on 27 November instead of 26 November? Is there any significance to these dates?

Why does the Jaffna Police Station HQI Prasath Fernando believe Pizza is most liked food than any other local culinary? If not for the state he believes Tamil People would not have tasted Pizza. Is that how you too think?

Native Vedda – Thanks to pissu QI Prasath Fernando’s stupid comment ; social media went wild and frenzy with Jaffana pittu and vadai.
Like various Pizza topping …social media went frenzy with the postings of various accompaniment of piytu with prawn curry, chicken curry, meat curry, jack fruit and sugar, nbana and sugae, mango and sugar, etc etc etc…sPizza hut are now adding Jaffna Pittu and Vadai to their menu across all their restaurants.

You can have pittu or vadai as a topping to the pizza or as a side dish.

apparently they tried it out in Sinhala South and proved very popular than the kavun topping.

“You can have pittu or vadai as a topping to the pizza or as a side dish.”

            Brilliant business idea.

By the way do you know why doesn’t LTTE celebrate VP’s birthday on 26th November instead next day 27th November?

I have heard various version of this Maweerar Rememberance Day.
The first LTTE cadre died on 27 November 1982.
If a Tamil who dies fighting the state cannot become Maweerar unless he/she is a member of LTTE.
The first LTTE cadre to die was Shankar.
He died in Tamilaham on VP’s lap.
Some believe he just died in India not on VP’s lap.

It appears Pon Sivakumaran was the first Thamil Martyr
            (died 5 June 1974 aged 23).
Why didn’t Northern Thamils nominate 5 June 1974 being Maweerar Day?

Hope any self respecting Tamil would answer my simple question.

Some say VP being VP anything is possible.
Is it possible VP conveniently switched the date of first martyrdom?
Is it possible VP conveniently caused the death of first LTTE death?

Going back to 1958/9 riots right thru to Burning of Jaffana Library; People who died in International Tamil festival/ Tamils who died in the riots in the 70s, 80, 90, in the new millennium/ and during the 30 year struggle .

“my thinking is that Maweerar Day is for all those Tamils who perished to the Sinhala Racism.”

Why one week remembrance days, the last day of which falls on 27 November just one day after VPs Birth Day?
You know the are 365 in one year why on earth VP chose 27th November being the final day of Remembrance week.

If VP wanted Tamils to celebrate 26th November as the remembrance day it is fine with Tamils….

            “What more you want Native?”

A usual you have typed a prepackaged/prepared sentence which has no relation to my question which I repeat:

Why did your brethren VP decide to celebrate his birthday on 27 November instead of 26 November? Is there any significance to these dates?

If you find my question difficult to answer why don’t you discuss this matter with Wimal Weerawansa.

Whats the matter with your Jaffna Police Station HQI?
Another little islander who has no respect for home cooked food.
Don’t the smart ass patriots teach these Brown Sahibs how not to make fool of themselves and respect our culture?

Where does the police department find such people for the force?
Has he been recruited on the recommendation of Gunadasa Amarasekara (the most unhappy person of this island)?

By now you should have made arrangement to sent him to Re-Education Camps.

Thanks Somu for taking my comment in CT for different places.

Can I ask you an additional favor, too?

If you wrote or comment to any Sinhala web site can you take there too. Regretting, I don’t speak or write Sinhala.

In my opinion a death in a family is a serious blow not only to that family but also to others who are connected to the family. At times this extends to the community as well. In Sri Lanka we have had very serious deaths/killings.

The illegal killings has been seen during repeated communal riots since independence, JVP insurrection, and more recently the LTTE-Government war. We have also seen illegal killings by various Governments for their political purposes and also other killings that has happened in communities due to personal quarrels.

It is the right of every individual and the family to remember a dead person no one can deny or stop it. But when it is done as an organized event in public it becomes an issue for one group or another. We see this in SL where JVP and armed forces are allowed to celebrate the dead but not the Tamils.

I understand why Tamils are not allowed to celebrate their dead, its because the Govt wants to have a control over LTTE activities, suppress the memory of LTTE and also for command and control purposes. By suppressing Tamils the Govt can make the Sinhala Buddhists who are majority in the country happy and continue their divide and rule policy.

    Dear NV

This is another way to pay tribute to all Mother Lankan Children. You can include this in your website for volunteer work/holidays for the diaspora children so they can all come and spend some time / their holidays with our children and plant Mangroves in remembrance of all the children died due to Tamil Nadu Foreign Sponsored terrorism.

Coastal protection from erosion/pollution and the Foreign fisherman steeling our children livelihood is very serious. We should ask the diaspora children to come back and take turn to serve (holiday rotation) in our Coast Guard would be another way to remember our children??

Currently all this work is done by the Navy for example in Karainagar etc.

    Dear NV

in fact we should define and tell the diaspora and their children in uncertain terms (not eaxctly like what we did back home …put a gun on their heads) that they need to serve and remember the dead by coming to Sri Lanka and do some cleaning work?? they need to learn what did really happen between 1970-1977-1981 the Ratha Pottu Mafia Killing Fields a Tamil crime against Tamils by the FP/TULF/Tamil Nadu thugs and the pending trials at the Hague.

We then be able to teach them the real sequence of events that really took place in Sri Lanka where they will learn in fact the Sinhalese too are the victims to this FP/TULF Mafia since Independence……which they manage to fix eventually……in the process Mother Lankan Children have died unfortunately in great scale.

There were never ever any recourse for any armed insurgencies in Sri Lanka by no one except we were caught off guard by the RW Medical Training in Russia and FP/TULF Tamil cause fighting training of children in India…we were never prepaired our own children will point a gun at us ever?? the world does not know what did really take place in Jaffna yet.

My main complaint about celebrating the Maaviirar Naal is that it celebrates only members and allies of the LTTE.
Are not sacrifices by members of other Tamil liberation organizations (including LTTE victims) any less than those approved by the LTTE?
Have not others who stood up for the community without calling for secession sacrificed as much as if not more than most LTTE Maaviirars?

Yes it was pointed out and sometimes there were acceptance to that way of observance. Adikalam, Sithathan & Suresh are accepted by leader Piraba, not from LTTE. Sampanthar Aiya is neutral. This problem mainly created in Diaspora world and export to Thaiyakam too. “Anyone after 1958, Sinhala Only, Standardization, 1977 & 1983, who thought of fighting against Sinhala Nazism and faced death on that process is Maveeran. A Maveeran is a lost soldier, who believed by thought as all other ways had failed, so here after the last solution left for us is personal sacrifice and went for fight, not just only by death”. Otherwise would, sadly, decide that Siva Kumar is not Maveeran. What about those became invalids and died within last few years with no help or food? What about Tamilini who died in the hand of Rapist Army, after serving them?

In the fight for Tamils freedom nobody, (GG, SJV, Leader Pirapba, Sampanthan)….. achieved anything though Piraba has internationalized the issue. He honestly said it is going to be to the future generation to take the fight in different dimensions. So it has to be fought until the end by current generation and even the futures.

Unfortunately there are groups that they think they bought his words on wholesale tender just because they are too brainy for any other kind of deal and they get into road warrior moods, instead of diplomacy. They talk about breaking, blasting, knocking down……. To alure them into diplomacy, they need to learn some diplomatic jargons from Sinhala Intellectuals, like” Kalyan Mittra” while they pit one country against another, diplomatically. By mistake these groups tend to think that they are sent to earth to be the PM, FM…. of the Tamil Eelam. For them, uniting with others for a common course is not an option, though they always claim they the first on that. They have made up their mind as, “my or highway”. They, even after seeing that they could not go forward after spending huge sums and times, because of their obstinat-ion, on obsolescence, yet not willing to make a compromise to bring an end to their faultiness.

Freedom is a property purchased with the price of sacrifice. Tyrants and dictators came and went through out the history. But the freedom of human life is glorified and celebrated with Mavverers’ dearest lives. That Humanity’s war for freedom never lost. Socrates, Gandhi, Lincoln & Pirapaharan like leaders have demonstrated to humanity that love and care towards the humanity is the heroism protect and preserve the freedom of the lives on the earth. Hitlers are elected by the Chunistic Bullies, with name pf race, religion, language, terrain….. But God sends Piraphaharans to undo the Hitlers’ pillroy and free the soul of the small lives. International countries have recognized the plight of the Tamils for last 72 years, under the oppression of Sinhala Buddhists, who willingly elect Hitlers to govern Tamils. Sarath Weerasekara, Denesh Gunawardena, and Presidents are not just ready to recognize the Tamils’ right to remember their loved ones, but even refuse to recognize Tamils representatives’ rights to provide leadership to Tamils on this agonizing, unpleasant occasion. Court cases are used to keep Tamil representative under control of Rapist Army, in North East in this Maveerar Week. It is Tamils’ duty to patiently let know the IC the justice Tamils have been receiving from Sinhala Only Courts from the time the Privy Council appeals are refused to them. Until that yield any fruit to Tamils:
    RIP for Marveerers.

Whatever you are on love to have some too.

Not to exceed the 14 units/week even during the lockdown is not so healthy.
