Memory, Memorials & MR’s Moral Compass

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath De Alwis

Lest we forget, the presidency of  Mahinda Rajapaksa was an exceptional display of state sovereignty. The hand that held sovereignty decided who lived, who died, who vanished and who was reprieved by the benevolence of the supreme law giver.

There is an African proverb coined to describe the fate of those who suffered the wrath of the tribal chief. ‘He left his foot print on stone and he passed on’. Lasantha left his foot print on stone and passed on. Keith Noyahr stepped on the stone but slipped before his foot print took hold.

“I don’t remember Karu Jayasuriya calling me.”

I asked them what was wrong if the man was released?”

“If as they say, the call was at twenty minutes past ten, it shows that I don’t go to bed at ten!”

Mahinda Rajapaksa provided these pleasantries and quips to the press after his interview with the CID officers. It was a choregraphed ‘walkabout’ in the ample compound of the official residence he occupies as a former head of state. He faced the cameras surrounded by a battalion of bum-kissers ready to break in to wild cheer at every bit of bombast that emanated from the great man.

Oxford Historian Timothy Garton Ash once observed that just as an Adult without a memory is a child, a nation that collectively contribute to a loss of memory is a childish nation. So let us not go there.

What, indeed was wrong about reprieving a man after beating and maiming him to pulp? There is nothing wrong about setting a man free after abduction. It is pure evil. Bodhisattva Rajapaksa is oblivious to the thin line that separates wrong from evil.

This essay is about the good and the evil of Mahinda Rajapakse.

Exhuming   history is not a feasible proposition with Mahinda Rajapaksa or Gotabaya Rajapaksa the principal enforcer under his presidency.

The absurd drama staged after the putative probe by CID investigators in to MR’s knowledge or the lack of it on the “Affaire Noyahr’ is abundant proof of the inexhaustible supply of the chummy, chameleonlike charisma of our war winning president.

He is incredibly resilient, intimidatingly provocative and immensely crafty. The English language has a word for such formidable fortitude. He is a ‘badass’ in the true sense of the word. That ‘Badass’ has an equally endearing nuance in our colloquial Sinhala is pure coincidence.

In the fortnight since the CID interview we have been treated to a good dose of MR’s matchless mastery of political theatre. He faced the cameras surrounded by a battalion of bum-kissers ready to break in to wild cheer at every bit of bombast that emanated from the great man.

The press permitted in to the event, measured up to the task by framing questions that reflects the puzzling spirit of our post-civil war political discourse.

‘Do you think it is proper for them to question a personage such as you, you, who has done so much?

Mahinda Rajapakse responded with aggravated indignation. ‘This is politically motivated harassment. They think it will not happen to them’.

‘Did you receive such a call from Karu Jayasuriya?

He could not recall a late-night  telephone call from Karu Jayasuriya on that bleak night when Keith Noyahr went missing.

The CID decision to question him was mischievous mudslinging and an attempt to link brother Gotabaya to the incident. It is nothing but a revengeful rollick of a failed and failing regime.

These responses of the former president reveal the monster lurking in his Sinhala Buddhist Patriotic breast.

He asks in chillingly nonchalance “I asked them what was wrong if the man was set free?”

This simple straightforward rhetoric of Mahinda Rajapaksa unclothes the anatomy of the liberator who eliminated the barbarity of the terrorists and delivered our nation in to a blissful repose of nothingness under the Rajapaksa family oligarchy.

Let us not underestimate badass Mahinda, the Sinhala Buddhist Patriot President. He holds the puppet strings of a huge swathe of Sinhala Buddhist Public opinion that is nearly half or slightly more. This huge support base holds him not in admiration but in pure unadulterated veneration.

He created, master minded the concept of Heroic Humanitarian slaying and coined the term ‘Ranaviru’ that has intimidated peace time political opponents in to a state of exasperating and excruciatingly painful impotence.

When Mahinda says he cannot remember, it means that he as the redeemer of the nation at the lagoon at Mulawaikkal does not wish to either talk about it or to be challenged on his credentials as the man who ended the war.

Memory politics is not for Mahinda Rajapaksa. This writer makes this assertion with haunting humility and deep despair. I know may people who would gladly endorse what Mahinda says or does without batting an eyelid. Most of them are highly educated professionals who have mastered their respective disciplines.

We are a people among whom are thousands that mourn the deaths and disappearances of their loved ones. We have unmarked graves. But we dare not mourn overtly for their deaths or search for their graves. That would be unpatriotic.

Mullivaikal is the village that turned out to be the decisive battle field. It was at Mullivaikal that the 26-year-old civil war came to an end. In a shallow inland lake nearby the victorious Mahinda Rajapaksa the Sinhala patriots from the Ruhunu heartland built a monument to mark the triumph of Mullivaikal. It is a 30 feet tall bronze soldier that springs out of the ripple less silent water. Four granite Lions guard the base of the monument that is dedicated to the memory of ‘Ranaviru’ war heroes who gave lives to defeat the LTTE.

The bronze soldier holds an assault rifle in his right hand while his left hand holds our national flag with its sword bearing lion deceptively distinct. The assault rifle in the right hand of the bronze soldier has a dove perched on it.

That little bronze dove while observing the silence of its metallic composition, seems to be quietly and resolutely cooing a message to the wider world. Perhaps it is that message of foreboding that prompted Keith Noyahr to think twice before appearing in person before the Magistrates court in Mount Lavinia.

There is nothing wrong with war memorials not even in the case of a civil war fought against an enemy within that sought to undermine the state or to split it in half.  Civilized nation states have built war memorials. The Russians built the ‘Motherland Calls’ statue to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad.

The Indians have a splendid war memorial – the Tawang War Memorial on the snowcapped peaks of Tawang in Arunachala Pradesh for the martyrs of the 1962 Sino-Indian War.

War memorials are built for a purpose. They are built by civilized nations after traumatic conflicts that demanded great human sacrifices.

What is the essential function of a war memorial? It helps the healing process. It must help the survivors of both sides of the conflict to make sense of the past and make peace with the past. A war memorial should invoke positive public discussion.

Mahinda’s Bronze Soldier with his assault rifle with a Pidgeon perched on it has a message-‘You lost, we won.’

Today, we are intimidated by the Rajapakse monolith that took firm root after the military triumph. We dare not challenge the triumphalist notion of self-righteous aggrandizement of the state that crushed terrorism.

In his percipient study of the use and abuse of political memory ‘In Praise of Forgetting: Historical Memory and its ironies David Rieff points out that when wars end with the overwhelming defeat of one side “victoryconfers the power unilaterally to shape the collective memory of the conflict.”

What Mahinda Rajapaksa’s war memorial does is to demand from the Tamils that they swallow their grief and any bitterness to grasp an uncertain harmony.

This writer is a Sinhalese and also a Buddhist. No doubt these remarks will prompt some patriots to suggest amendments to the column in my birth certificate where details of my father and my mother are spelt out. That indeed is a small price to pay in this attempt to make an honest map that depicts the correct contours of our collective political memory.

Time and time again in history, a certain personality type assume power after cataclysmic conflicts. They are charismatic, charming, calculating and cruel. They are devoid of empathy and full of grandiosity, thirst for power and totally indifferent to conventional rules and norms of conduct.

They are tyrants that people learn to follow willingly. Mahinda Rajapakse is such a man- a malignant narcist.  It seems we have not seen the end of his tyranny.

Watching the stupid, inept bungling of the successor regime that has only marginally resuscitated our democracy, we seem to have forgotten the blackmail, the outright threats, and the manipulations we were subjected to in the post-civil war five years, when Mahinda Rajapaksa exercised his leverage though his immediate and extended family.

The video recording of the former President fielding journalists’ questions after his encounter with the CID investigators is now available in the internet.

Quite nonchalantly, MR makes the counter argument. All right, what if he did make the call. The man was released. What is wrong with that?

That is what is frightening about Mahinda Rajapaksa who may yet make a comeback. He does not find the abduction and assault of the journalist either shocking or reprehensible.

Mahinda Rajapaksa presided over an efficient government. It delivered results. The declared objectives of the powers that be were implemented by a state mechanism that ceased to think but acted reflectively. If a practice of intimidation became a daily routine, surely the nation that reconciled itself to such routine procedure cannot suddenly wake up and cry foul.

Mahinda will be remembered in history. He rewrote history and the constitution.

We created Mahinda Rajapaksa. Reeling under the pressure of unimaginable terror we wanted decisive action. We wanted a leader who took swift action against a mad terrorist as against other leaders who were too soft. So, we went about creating our own evil to counter the evil that threatened us. So, defeating Prabhakaran’s armed terrorist evil we ended up with the coercive political evil of the Rajapaksa regime.

Mahinda was not pretending when he claimed not remembering the call from Karu Jayasuriya. He was just doing what he does very well. He was constructing a new history to replace memory.

Under the Mahinda presidency the state was sovereign. Not the people. That sovereign power determined who lived, who dies and who got abducted and maimed. The true lesson of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency was the impotence of reason, contempt for the truth and the impudence of assuming that history was theirs to make or unmake.

The historical animosity between Poland and Russia was insurmountable through centuries. The Poles had a bitter joke. Who does a Pole kill first? A German or a Russian? A German of course! Duty before pleasure.

In the year 2010, the Russian parliament finally acknowledged that Stalinist Russia and not Nazi Germany was guilty of the mass murder of twenty-two thousand Polish officers in the Katyn forest in western Russia IN 1940. The Poles have forgotten the old joke.

As every president was and is corrupt, as every PM (Ranil and Kudu DIMU) was corrupt, as every cabinet was corrupt and is not different from teh present 165 ministers, the best option is Mahinda Rajapakse. Maithripala as a president was lost and now he is talkin a lot but no results. On th other hand, foreign influence on sri lankan resources is increasing. they say it is military threat and it is from China and the Indian OCean. What can we Sri lanka just a bankrupt Islan running through a economic depression. One country say neglecting the cheap Tea, Tubber and other things you provided, we have given $ thirty crores as Aids. So, it is our time to take it back and help us. What we want is your land parcels and small industries. the question si whether Mahinda Rajapakse can handle it. UNHCR, WAR Crimes, reconciliation with the west, human rights, and his assets in those countries come first. SEe china has given us billions. We don’t have that much money and that is why those billions piss off us they say.

What I cannot understand is what Sarath de Alwis would have gained if the war continued and the whole country became another Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, etc etc. I don’t know where Mr. de Alwis lives but for people living here end of war meant a new lease of life for them and theirs and the future generations. Perhaps Mr. de Alwis gained from the misery of the war. The war was between the SL government and a ruthless terrorist outfit, losers were the LTTE NOT the Tamils and why not make monuments to the victory over evil?
When Obama an awardee of the Nobel prize for peace broke all Geneva conventions and directed the Seals to kill Osama in a foreign territory did de Alwis cried foul? I bet not.
After the second world war agents of allied countries extra judicially killed suspected elements of enemy cells in Europe, while in SL the captured LTTE cadres were integrated to the society, and the army built them houses, yet de Alwis calls MR evil.

WAR s end was not because MR et al, but because of the fall of LTTE wing and them being banned on any rich soils. Who should have been given the credit for getting them banned on Europe and other countries is Late Mr Golden son of the mother lanka -Kadirgamar. Nobody else. Today, the full cake is being grabed by Rajapkashe family but not even giving the credit to sacrificed Army and other two forces. I think if anyone woudl still feel Rajakshe did th, he or she can better question again, very same sensitive man to let even more harms also after war is no longer there ( in post war episodes), creating more human rights issues by his two terms… can well be helpufl.

Sarath Alwis’ nostalgia over those terror days will be a thing of the past with renewed conflict resulting from the division of the country into federal blocks. Incoherent bloodshed here and there will be much worse than an organised war. The only way to avert this disaster is to educate the Tamils (all Tamil speaking people scattered across the island irrespective of their religion or the date of arrive ) over this posibility of their physical relocation. They must be concious of the choice before them – right to live anywhere OR a sepate homeland.

Very objective analysis. I’m afraid that you’re going to be phased out soon. If not and if he succeeds next time you’ll be Noyahred.
Being a Tamil and yet wanting the country to prosper as a whole and not in pieces it feels good to see there’s someone sensible with a voice.

The real worry is that it’s more than likely that HE or one of his patriotic puppets will be the next president. The current regime appears very impotent for the ordinary. They need to fix that soon.

The question every right-thinking person asking is why was Keith Noyahr taken in the first place? In Mahinda’s sick world such a question doesn’t even exist. It was his prerogative to do anything what he wanted in the name of the war. And now, because victory was achieved, he doesn’t have to be accountable for anything. He can just retroactively justify everything he did during the war as part of the effort to defeat the enemy. This is the thinking that was reflected in his arrogant statement, “I asked them what was wrong if the man was set free?” So outrageously self-righteous and condescending. He is even implying he did a favour to Keith Noyahr by releasing him – all the while refusing to answer the real question, “why was Keith Noyahr arrested and brutally tortured in the first place for carrying out his duties as a conscientious journalist?” Mahinda’s obscene answer is further injurious to Keith Noyahr and his family, and is insulting to the citizens of this country. This flippant attitude and facetious answer are the hallmark of a psychopath beyond redemption. Do we want to let him come back and rule us and determine the fate of our children?

Mahind Rajapakse is being scolded by protestants of both the Tamils and Sinhala. While Mangala says until 2020, A tax break for the populace can not be given, Car dealers in Sri lanka are crying out loud saying the Tax break for Car importers by RANIL the other Western Agent ruin their business. So, profits from them.

Don’t connect the war memorial with Mahinda. We all have the “grief and bitterness” about what happened during those thirty years

Sarath, Your analysis based on biography of this’ persona non grata’ should be an eye opener to the two leaders and the entire politicians of today, but unfortunately these evil and disgraceful conduct is being perpetuated without any remorse of conscience,
employing different tactics. Even at this eleventh hour the two leaders could bring these perpetrators before the Law and mete out justice to the victims of heinous crimes committed against them. That is what Sri Lanka is yearning for and not for religion or volkswagens. Forget about your political future, people know it perhaps better than you do.

      Henry,
Process is not so easy. Most of the Supreme Court and Appellate Court are filled with Rajapaksha goons. Gota goes to Court asking preventing him from arrest by Authority. Sup. Court granted that and still the Order is dragging like a rubber. When the case is taken up it will postpone for another 6 or 7 months. Gota is still out on open and already 4 Sup. Court Judges recused from hearing that case. Then Sakkiliwansa and Nawalapitiye Kamba Hora asking ” ko Horu Alluwada” What can the Govt. do about it? If the Govt. say something then there will be big haa….hoooo…saying Govt. will interfere in Court matters. Govt. then started Permanent High Court to speed the cases. Then again same Sakkiliwansa and Nawalapitiye Kambahora and JO members shouting about Political revenge. Ada da Rena and Kudu TV giving wide publicity. These media now behaving like there is no Government. They still thinking Mahinda Rajapaksha is still Governing the Country. There should be a media freedom but Govt. should monitor the unnecessary media freedom.

Wonder whether Dr Ranil’s CID will grill the Big Man about that Body found next to Nanthikadal?..

  • 16
    1

Yes, he has very poor memory. He don’t remember Noyahr. He don’t remember Karu Jayasuriya’s call. His brother, Gota doesn’t know about Lasantha Wickramathunga and Prageeth Eknaligoda. Both doesn’t remember who killed 27 Journalists, who attacked media stations. Recently Mahinda said he asked Udayanga Weerathunga to come to Sri Lanka to assist the FCID officers who investigates MIG deal. Electronic media such as Ada da Rena and Kudu TV gave wide publicity on his statement. Now I am sure Mahinda doesn’t remember weather he made such a statement. Media also easily forgotten about it. Our Country is being destroyed by this kind of dirty Journalism and 2.50 voice cut Journalists. In my opinion both Mahinda Rajapaksha and Gotabaya Rajapaksha are not suitable as possible Presidential candidates in 2020 as both are suffering from severe Amnesia decease.

Today the world is dependent on genticaly modified food. The netherlands to other countries produce these foods in Europe while Americans do their kind of GM foods. Whatever geneticall modification is made by human efforts, if they are dangerous, researchers woudl not let them leave their labs easily.

I think lanken people and their total ignorance let Mahinda Rajakashe to abuse the vulnerable in this coutnry as genetically modified companies misled this nation. So consequences are really dangerous.

1): I happened to lisen to lanken news lately, particularly the debate sheduled on New Y Time article revealed former President to have been bribed by Chinese … for collosal sums ( 7.2 millions of dollars -1100 millions in lanken RPS – mean 1 billion in lanken rps- meaning 1/12 of the damage made by Bond scam by the current govt) – However, none of the Rajapkshes showed up on very day in the parliament – nor have anyone gone after to see as to why the bugger et al failed to be in the parliament on that day.
IF THIS WAS THE CASE WITH RW or Mr SIRISENA- Press woudl have hunted both to the all depth and made it a big big issues by today

This proves that MEDIA MAFIA IS RUN BY FORMER MR GOONS EVEN TODAY IN THE COUTNRY

    2) TOday FORMER men make every effort to rewrite or overwrite what they had been the best, regardless of their defeat in PE 2015. People are made to believe, NOT A SINGLE culvert is made by the current govt – WHICH IS JUST MISLEADING LIE. – so called RD and other development projects move foward even better than MR days, but WITHOUT being captured by any publicity.

    3) Personal Publicity was placed above the TOP OF THE LIST of previous so call MUGABE STYLE regime… but today, PM leaves the country for VIetnam or any other destination, is not louded as big issues and Prez travels to Russi a or anywhere is just not a big headline.

    4) Nemesis of SRILANKEN AIRLINES resulted by the stupid mismanagement of Rajapkshe goons. Entourages filled with 200 men licking the balls of Rajaksehs made high losses in Lanken airline. Even in the middle of high losses (goes to hundreds of billions) Rajaakshes travelled to ROME in mid 2014. No matter anything would have been the case, the bugger et all enjoyed it as INDIAN FILM SHOOTERS travel to Switzerland for their shooting events. Such indians bring such high loads covering their chapathi makers to drumers when travelling to Swtiezrland or US for their film make).

An outright lie is much more tolerable than unbounded exaggeration where Sarath Alwis specialises in. The former can be countered, disproved which is exceedingly difficult with the latter. He would be totally successful in his endeavour had we not lived through 1989 Bheeshanaya.

I have never seen an ex-President so actively engaged in activities more than during the time he/she was in power, such is the robust nature of MR, he is so focused on his goals, just simply dismissing negative propaganda against him and the mudslinging by his opponents. This has significantly elevated his approval ratings, poised for a sure win at the next elections Rauf & Mano are already lying at MR’s feet more will follow their footsteps.. The Mahathir of Lanka in the making.

MR’s strength was proved at the 2016 May Day Rally at the Galle Face Green, OMG what a crowd!,

Evidently MR was asked “Do you think it is proper for them to question a personage such as you…….?”
The reply was ”This is politically motivated harassment. They think it will not happen to them”.
    Politically motivated harassment “Maybe”
The bit “They think it will not happen to them” says it all. It is a blunt threat. Perhaps such threats have been issued to prosecutors, witnesses, judges et al.

“ He was just doing what he does very well. He was constructing a new history to replace memory. “
The author of the history of that part is Ranil Wickremesinghe, not Old King. He went to New York and demanded from UNSG Ban Ki Moon that all other versions of the real history must be removed from IC records. Sorry to use insulting words to an affected Victim, but let me ask question from Keith Noyahr . What that idiot is doing in this case, which’s only purpose fooling IC and delaying their action while Ranil selling even the North to China? Keith knows every bit of the case. As an analytical writer Keith has already written of what would be the verdict if a case ever filed in court, in his files. Then, why is he selling his name to Ranil to cheat IC in this game too? There are 100% of all needed materials in CIDs files to directly put Old Royals on all court cases. It is Ranil, who is keeping the CIDs hand tied to teach lessons to IC. Ranil will personally vote for Old King and show the ballot paper high in the air to TVs rather than letting Old King’s Hero image go tainted or failing in his attempt to consolidate the war victory. When NYT printed the CIDs files’ secret on China using the loan money to Old Royals’ and New King’s election campaign, Ranil immediately shut up NYT by demanding proof from them, instead demanding Daily News for the proof of that, because it was the first one published that story, NYT. Four times CID send demand to Old King to but he refused to appear. Could one in the world explain, in that case, why did the CIDs went to his house? They had a deed signed and seal if they go his house he was going release all secret?

  • 0

Let me ask a question from author. If the CID is pretending like they cannot read what the records are in their files are and send it to AG to file the case, can he tell what is wrong with Old King, if pretends like he had forgotten those entire incident? Author should sincerely accept the difference between the hard copy evidences CID holding in Keith case and the data in the memory of the Old Kings head. Author is hiding Yahapalanaya vigilant effort of saving Old Royals and he taking part of game of “Fooling all the people all the Time”. He is patting and petting Yahapalanaya’s insincerity games, to fulfil his private object of “Saving Old Royals from War Crimes and Murder Crimes while ensuring Ranil’s party can come to power in 2020”. (War crime is not about killing Pirapaharan, but Killing 150,000 Tamils.)
This is a game Yahapalanaya playing to delay IC’s action until the next government comes. It is an absolute Drama Old Royals and Yahapalanaya staging together, sending CIDs to his house.
“ what was wrong if the man was released? “ When Old King asked this question, did the 4th Floor Bar – B- Quers replied that they lost their meat by being it released or they gazed at the ceiling? Anyway that is question for Kindergarten kids, but the bought out Modaya Laptop Colombo Media cannot respond to that. They failed to remind Old King to reply, if he had forgotten, to the case of kidnapping Keith and not to the case of releasing Keith. If releasing one is not wrong, why he could not do the same when West asked him let go the 150,000 innocent Tamil victims before he start an all-out war with Tamils. What about 11 Colombo rich family kids murdered in Trinco Navy Camp? There were many “not wrong” things Old King should and must have done. That is the wrong he did.

We must learn to take events separately. Donald Trump can bomb Syria to the dark ages but he cannot misuse Campaign funds. MR can destroy the LTTE but he cannot kidnap a journalist and torture him.

We now live in the 21 Century and we have a thing called rule of law.

But I am afraid that most people in this country are zombie like, and all these fine concepts do not matter to them as long as they can send their children overseas to study. And if things go really bad in this country there is a thing called duel citizenship in USA , UK and Australia

Questioning can’t be harassment for truthful one, it must be seen as a funny thing.

It’s funny thing to see that it’s taken over 3 years to initiate questioning; that arouses doubt that whether it’s genuine attempt or just a miracle through media to make masses silent.

People are eager to prosecute both Rajapakses & bond scam culprits simultaneously.
