MIA Looks Back To Go Forward : ‘I’m Making Space For New Thoughts’

At six months old MIA left England for her parents’ native Sri Lanka. She lived there and in India while her father campaigned for a separate Tamil state. His political activism forced the family back to London where Maya would eventually attend college at Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The prestigious school counts English artistic legends including Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney as alumni.

Why don’t you take your racist rant in unintelligible English to one of those “Hate the Tamils” rallies?
Why the moderator allowed ANY of your garbage on to this website is impossible to understand.

We fought against colonialism, we were also termed terrorists
Finally the White man got it and left
Since then we have behaved the same, if not worse

If it was ok for us, then it is ok for them to dream a seperate state
For we are responsible for discriminating and victimising
I for one do not believe we ‘north’ Indians have greater rights here than ‘south’ Indians
Especially when the natives are related to them south Indians.

The publicity and focus she brought to the struggle of the Lankan
Tamil Nation 2-3 years ago was welcome by Tamils in the diaspora/Sri Lanka and India. Her music was average, her videos bizarre but she made it to the top. If she wishes to be identified with Tamil womanhood she has to watch her vulgar language and her erotic style.
I am aware she had her schooling and upbringing in the less desirable parts of East London. She has to learn to raise herself above the cultural norms of her adopted home in England.
She has the talent and style to remain at the top without resorting to that which appeals to the lower instincts to those knee deep in the drug culture. Lankan Tamil girls who gave so much to the struggle did not desert the cultural norms and decency with which Tamil womanhood is identified historically and respected.

      Hi Senguttuvan,
MIA made it to the top because of her above-average music and superb videos. Her vulgar language, lifestyle and clothes are a necessary prerequisite to success in rap and hip-hop. I don’t think you’re in her target audience. :)

Her interventions in 2009 were quickly reduced to nothing when her glaring lack of knowledge was exposed. Her whining on about ‘Tamil genocide’ whilst simultaneously declaiming “Give war a chance” shredded whatever credibility she had left.

I’m interested in your thoughts on ‘cultural norms’. It seems that returned ex-LTTE female combatants are being ostracised and shunned by their fellow villagers. This video, produced by the CPA is painful viewing.

          Vanakkam Wuliangguobinjiu,

You say “like David in his article says you sound like the Demala or para demala? which one is it terrorista?”

Who’s this “David” and where is his article?

Can you be more specific in your racist abuse? Explain precisely the difference between a “Demala” and a “Para Demala”

What sort of “terrorista” would you like me to be? The JVP type or the LTTE type?

I’m sorry to press you on this, but I’m a real pedant on this sort of thing.

I really atpceriape the look at MIA as a global artist. I feel that a lot of her music has been glorified, not only because of the quality and depth of her music, but mostly and tell me if I’m being unfair here to her background and her race. Her music was featured in the recent film Slumdog Millionaire, where the melody and harmonies of Paper Planes was altered, but would someone else’s music, if that artist was not brown (Sri Lankan, Indian etc), have been chosen to represent the hardships that the children in the movie had to go through? Honestly, no.

The best design is the design that sells.
Sadly you have no idea of pop art. In your days remember the Beatles they broke the barrier and that’s what it is all about.Money is the root cause of all good.
Later on it was Madonna, who was always there before time in her music and video. The Church goers spoke like you today they all wait for her next to copy.
In Bollywood no person with traditional dance and music is enrolled but the westernised version of it is what is wanted.
Ten years ago I have watched her at close-up in the center of London by accident and there were no drugs etc. just the SL thing nothing else.
Contemporary art is different. Even in China it is very difficult to get an artist to do me a Tao because they make a lot of money making American junk art mostly very sexual things and very expensive so why bother with delineation and sculpture is the same. Do you find anyone doing a Da Vince today?

Mango – Tku for the video clip. Those who embark into war must remember the terrible post-war consequences it will cause. Not just women but men cadres also are often shunned by society now for one reason or the other.

Wulian – I have been a passionate music lover from the 1960s and am above average in info on Western (classical, Pop, C&W and my favourite Motown) Tamil, Sinhala and Hindi music. I was embarrassed when MIA came out with the “finger” in the Madonna show. I thought it shamed all Tamil lasses. Yet I wish young MIA well in the future. She has not impressed me with her singing although the musicians who back her came out with a distinguishable kind of music – as in “Paper planes”

      Hi Senguttuvan,
But why are ex-LTTE cadres being shunned in their own villages, by their friends and neighbours? Surely these people should at acknowledge their sacrifice and do their utmost to help the returnees instead of making their lives even harder?

      Senguttuvan:
If you listen and watch Madonna’s first label she breaks all conservative barriers nothing more to show. Every other girl band is just following her. So when MIA shows a finger you cannot look at it from a conservative Tamil point of view because it is very common for women in London to show 2 fingers in distaste. When I saw her the gig was organised by white folk and I never saw any Tamil over there to my knowledge. She is catering to the wider audience and that’s where the money is. If she was singing just Tamil songs then “maybe” your distaste is accepted because even in Chennai things are moving away. Remember the Brahmin beauty Queen from Chennai who married Salman Rushdie. Well we had a full spread of her fully nude in all the British papers (I felt sic buts that’s her message to all Tamil girls of Chennai courtesy Rushdie) before she went off to the US as TV presenter after the divorce. They all want to break lose because the most beautiful form man has conceived up to now is woman. There is nothing you can do when the world media, resources are controlled by the Zionist Jews like Murdoch for instance who ran page 3 in the UK and finally tapped phones etc. etc.- all to compete Bill Gates as the richest man and for his Israel.
Remember Persis Kahambatta the Parsi woman who became Miss Asia and acted in Star Wars. Well Spielberg first asked her to shave her pussy as the suit did not look good on her and she gladly obliged but the prick want to shove it and she said I did not come to offer you that and resigned. It is not Asians but there are very many westerners too who don’t allow that and dont wear high heels

I disagree with the view of Senguttavan on MIA.
MIA performed as an American and I believe she showed the “finger” in a deliberate and thoughtful manner demonstrating her frustration with the authorities as well as certain part of the society.

That did not in anyway, show the Tamil woman in bad light. She as a Tamil girl, woman and mother, had done more to the Tamil struggle, than most of the 35-40 million Tamil combined. She is very popular among the younger generation, and “old farts” cannot relate to her music, and songs. Paper Planes song hit the top charts and credit goes to her and not the background musicians.

MIA has married into a very rich family and her future is very well secured even if she does not sell a single record or DVD. But she as a Tamil female has done very well for herself, and she genuinely cares for her own family and the Tamils in Sri Lanka. Unlike all those armchair generals and computer cowboys.. She has made the airwaves to expose the human rights violations and or Genocide than no other, and she has done it on her own in several interviews watched by millions. This is not like writing pages and pages in websites with a few thousand readers, or paid press releases via PR WEB.

MIA completely out-shadowed Maddona at the Super Bowl with just one finger without exposing her private parts, like other actresses, and singers do.. She was the talk more than Maddona or the game itself. Maybe, it was a PR stunt for her music…

More power to her, and congratulations to MIA to her success.

    Wulian,

Do I take it Mango fears you suffer some form of lecherous disorientation? I believe the ex-Mrs Rushdie you refer to called herself Luxmi Parvathi or some similar name suggesting her fixation with virtuous Hindu goddesses. My friends in Chennai told me she was nothing more than a willing society whore with nothing but social upward mobility obsession. But then as John Travolta told a dame “its your p..s..y. You decide what to do with it” After all, we live in a free world, don’t we? So Madonna – the Material Girl and M.I.A. our little Thamil girl are on their own to reach their stars – their chosen way.

Thank god we have been running our own successful industry in several states of the middle east for 40 years and don’t need to Sir anyone like petty government servants who are bought, sold and abused like for example by the likes of Premadasa. Anyway, yes she was a poor girl and took the opportunity that Salman offered. Tomorrow you might say that the British prince married a whore because you are not a Brahmin. You seem to have the same problem now as the kangaroo with the thota katu mum.

First you go off on a retarded rant about Jewish/Zionist controlled media, then you use racist terms about Tamils and end up giving us an unnecessary glimpse into your sexual fetishes.

You say I’m ‘truly a para demala that has made Lanka a land of tears.” Do the weirdos like you have any responsibility for having created “a land of tears”?

Can you explain this“para demala”a bit more? Is it a term of respect for a Tamil parachutist?

The only conclusion a reasonable person can make is that you’ve somehow gained access to the internet from your a mental institution and you’re 100% mentalist Sinhala modaya. Perhaps Dr Senewiratne can be persuaded to remotely diagnose your mental illness.

You say you have been running a great industry in the middle east for 40 years. That is early 1970. But those Arabs started blackmailing the
world sending the price of oil from US$3 ppbl to $15 starting 1973.
The rest of the world started flocking there after the 1980s. That takes your story to mendacious territory. As to the Ghetto I live in, Brother, you have got your under-wear in a twist.

I can see you have a problem with certain communities in Sri Lanka. My advise to you is try to maintain some civility and calbre in referring to them. Alternatively, you might expose your own suspect breeding. Your choice of a pen name itself is indicative you are bonkerish.

Aha! So you’re a troll from Royal Dutch Shell, Pook! Now it all makes sense…

I take it that “RS” means me, and that the “mourning” that I am “haressing” is Donald Gnanakone.

What is wrong with you, Pook? Expert advice regarding diagnosis and treatment has been requested, and I think I can provide it…

I was alerted to the possibility that you were a paid troublemaker, what is known as a “troll”, when I read your first comments. This was about a week ago, and your racism and ill-informed prejudice against the people of Sri Lanka, and me in particular, was immediately obvious. It was obvious, also, that you were trying to introduce the phrase “yellow robed terrorist” at every available chance, even attempting to insult poor Leela with this label.

Now you’re attacking poor old Senguttuvan, one of the elders of the Tamil community, because, in your distorted perception, he’s not “taking your side” in your ill-conceived attacks on me.

Such behaviour suggests strongly that you are a thug with no respect for your elders and betters (I’m talking about Leela and Senguttuvan).

By the way, Pook, the trick is to understand the difference between “bread” and “bred”, “beading” and “breeding”. A “low bread” is, at best, a loaf lying on the ground.

As for underwear not being dreamed of by Senguttuvan’s genes…I’m not sure any of us quite follow you there.

LTTE fighters who have cooperated with GOSL, SLA and the Rajapakses have no room or place with the Tamil public even in their own villages.

This applies to even LTTE leader KP who has bribed his way to freedom and claims he has been rehabilitated by the Rajapakse.

What is the surprise here? That Tamils have no room for quislings.
The same with Karuna and Pillaiyan..

But the Tamils understand the circumstances of the fighters, so they are not hated, but just ostracized to really send a message to the Sinhalese and the Rajapakses, lest they misunderstand the Tamils.

      Dear Donald,
You condemn as “quislings”, LTTE cadres who obeyed orders, believed in their cause, fought bravely against overwhelming odds, surrendered, survived, went through a ‘rehabilitation’ process and returned to their villages to rebuild their lives?

We know that GoSL is callous and corrupt, but your position is a million times worse. From the comfort and safety of your luxuriously upholstered sofa, you encouraged these young men and women to fight, die, lose their youth and belongings, yet declined to provide your own children as a sacrifice to the ’cause’.

Thank you for exposing the pro-LTTE diaspora’s complete and utter moral bankruptcy. You guys make Gota and Mahinda look like benevolent gods and yet again prove Prof Halliday’s thesis that diasporas have no legitimate role to play in national and international politics. i.e. the The World’s Third Worst Idea.

“The notion that emigrant or diaspora communities have a special insight into the problems of their homeland, or a special moral or political status in regard to them, is wholly unfounded. Emigrant ethnic communities play almost always a negative, backward, at once hysterical and obstructive, role in resolving the conflicts of their countries of origin”

    Wulian:

You should apologise to Romesh for calling his dear mother Thotta Kattu Thamil. I don’t know – but I would expect her to be of good Vellalar quality Colombo society lady of Jaffna origin. At any rate,
we should not drag the good lady into this Forum.

By the way, don’t ever denigrate the Thotta Kattans. it is the Thotta Kattu Lechumi and her husband Suppiah who converted jungles into verdant tea esttes and built the wealth of this country from the late 19th century till now – from whose blood and toil we paid all our social-welfare bills. And the gratitude they got was their rights – that they enjoyed till 1947 – were withdrawn by DSS because “he suspected they will vote for the LSSP” That was the great sin they were punished for till the injustice was rectified in 1987. As my friend, teacher and leader the late Mr Thondaman said “it required a foreign army to step and restore both Citizenship rights to my people and language equality rights to the indigenous Tamils” Gamini D once got into an argument with me and said “yes, we allowed them to come in.But they did not go back” The same thing was repeated by the late Ven. Madihe Pannaseeha Thero when I took a delegation from the VHP/Delhi to call on him. The answer to both is, in response to the anti-Indian violence and harrasmentd caused to Indians/Malayalees here by Anagarika Dharmapala and his acolytes like A. E. Gunasinha in the 1930s when the Colonial Indian Govt – at the urge of Nehru and other Indian leaders – stopped the flow of Indian labour here that hurt the local Plantation industry so badly the Ceylon Planters Society asked the Colonial Govt to appeal to Delhi to consider resumption of the badly needed labour supply. A Delegation from Ceylon went to Delhi to plead the local cause – after which only further workers were sent.
I am told SWRD was one of those in the delegation – although I stll have to get proper confirmation of this. I hope someone in the readership might have some comments to make here.

Mr Suppaiha did not bring “tea plant nursery” but it was the British and from what I gather it was one Winter. Suppaiha may have come from South India under “indentured servitude” which was in operation after the abolition of slavery.
I do appreciate neither the aboriginal Tamils nor Sinhalese are capable of climbing those hills like goats would do in that cold at 4 in the morning. Their living conditions are still appalling. There is a similar problem with them in Malaysia. What does Thonda do for ages; just like nana thoppe;) he has no support from Delhi because Delhi is pseudo Aryan started with Nehru.
The worst effect on the plantations and economy was when the “udurankana pakshaya” of Sirimavo gave the marching orders to the sterling companies- the UN boys who later came to advice her and the government played her but advising the cutting of the wind breakers so the buds flew away Ha ha Its like taking over Gas company and having no plans. Chinese recently purchased MG from UK and UK expected them to continue and provide employment but the Chinese dismantled it all and took it away- they were the the patents for the new model only not the “original foundations” so they are still struggling to come out with the new. Later tired. I noticed fraud once it uploaded but the on principle I dont look back but grin and bear.

When slavery was abolished the Dutch, French and British had to find a way of getting labour to the plantations therefore they formed “indentured servitude” – initially a ten year contract to men only for a small wage, then five year,. The problem here was the laborers got lost on the plantations and refused to return so – and finally men and women. Folk were taken away from Bihar by the Dutch to the South America- Surinam, from Gujarat by the British to many places in Africa like Uganda, Kenya, etc. Also the Chinese men were taken to Canada- Only the Chinese are to be paid compensation very soon-
So similarly East India Company Calcutta which organized the Labour to Ceylon faced the problem of laborers not returning. So what that man said is correct.- Look it up under “indentured servitude” before passing judgment on my wellbeing.
Nothing has changed in the west as far as concept of Labour is concerned since the multinationals need the hard working cheap refugee Labour who listen – of course the conditions have improved because there are minimum wages Labour laws etc.

        This is very interesting, Wulian.

I have never known where the Dutch and British stole folk from in India, only Ceylon. I am interested to know more. Today I read about “scheduled castes” and I was deeply shocked.

I knew the British were cruel, but the extent and magnitude of the cruelty to people they thought were better than them was the worst.

I had never heard that the Chinese were taken to Canada. Do you mean they were separated on the basis of colour, or eye-shape? And when, would you say, was this? Was the Dutch East India Company policy?

Wulian, I’m sorry I was a bit rude to you when you were abusing me for no good reason, earlier…now you are being yourself it’s easier to talk and I agree, you have an interesting point of view.

You seem to know about the origins of the Alagaratnam family. Alagaratnam was my mother’s father’s Family Name. I don’t know any details, about his ancestry, but he was a senior public servant under the British – Director of Irrigation. He graduated in Civil Engineering in Madras University, in the 1920s, and was stationed in Anuradhapura before he headed the Irrigation Department (till after Independence).

I was very close to my grandfather. He taught me a lot of important things. Such as how to respect others, how to draw and paint, and about large-scale irrigation. We left, Ceylon, though, when I was 15 (in 1976) and saw him only once after that.

He died under mysterious circumstances in 1977. The more I know about it, the more I think he was killed because of his opposition to the war. I’d really like to know more about him, if you know anything…

Wulian, my friend. Surely I did not say the Indian labourers brought Tea to Ceylon. It was not Winter – but Charles Taylor, to whom all of us are deeply indebted. I am afraid, you describe the fine Indian Tea Estate worker in somewhat uncharitable terms. Much of the rest in your comments in this page, if you will forgive me, is gobbledygook. I am now beginning to suspect Mango is not entirely wrong.

Well I did not confirm Winter okay. Thanks for the Taylor name I shall try to remember. What is uncharitable? Facts are stubborn! Charity starts at home. One nut recognises another Get it I don’t fear or bum I don’t like this under the palmyra tree talk please.

If need be I can arrange to courier the very best of Lithium courtesy John Hopkins Hospital (I have a neice there too doing a PhD) to the two of you. There is nothing better than that in the world and it is only 50% effective.

      Do I know you??

Senguttavan wrote ” As my friend, teacher and leader the late Mr Thondaman said “it required a foreign army to step and restore both Citizenship rights to my people and language equality rights to the indigenous Tamils” Gamini D once got into an argument with me and said “yes, we allowed them to come in.But they did not go back”
    Unquote”

I totally disagree with Senguttavan on this claim.
The estate Tamils received most of their claims due to the fear psychosis Thondaman exploited from 1977, until 1994 with both President JR and Premadasa. The Indian troops came in only in 1987 and there were no rights won by the IPKP which became an “innocent people killing force”.

For 10 years until 1987, Thondaman exploited the fear very cunningly, causing fear among the UNP that the estate youth might join the LTTE and other Eelam groups and the only way to prevent it through him, and giving the labor force better wages, overtime, housing, health and education. (Which they deserved).

But it is mainly due to the Tamil fighters than IPKF soldiers that they won so much from the UNP and President Chandrika/PM Ranil. But this Thondan the grandson of Sr. Thondaman is a damn disgrace to the trade union movement and as a Tamil politician/cabinet minister… More like Karuna and Pillaiyan. Of course, without the LTTE around, their leverage with the GOSL is over… CWC has lost it’s importance with the GOSL, Rajapakses, and in Parliament… What a shame, Senguttavan…

But the next generation of Thondaman seem to be enjoying the ill gotten wealth which also has been spirited away in India.. His known income in Sri Lanka from 1948 is rather limited!!!!!

Exactly, and this was one of the more serious matters that made Sellasamy differ in his opinion from that of Thondaman.

      Dear Donald,
Fascinating as these history lessons are, would you be so kind and answer the question I asked you earlier?

You condemn as “quislings” (traitors), LTTE cadres who obeyed orders, believed in their cause, fought bravely against overwhelming odds, surrendered, survived, went through a ‘rehabilitation’ process and returned to their villages to rebuild their lives?

How do you define yourself, as someone who encouraged these young men and women to fight, die, lose their youth and belongings, yet declined to provide your own children as a sacrifice to the ’cause’.
