The UPFA Galle district Parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe who is married to a Swiss national is likely to lose her seat in parliament if an ongoing investigation proves that she holds citizenship status in Switzerland as well as Sri Lanka.
A Police team conducting a probe has sought assistance from the Interpol to determine whether Kumarasinghe who is also a popular film actress holds dual citizenship.
A report from the Interpol in this regards is due shortly, Police sources said.
According to the newly introduced 19th amendment to the Constitution, a Sri Lankan Citizen holding citizenship status in another country cannot hold a seat in the legislature.
After the issue came to the fore Kumarasinghe had denied charges that she holds dual citizenship status.
When a case filed by a group of voters from Galle, challenging Geetha’s election as a parliamentarian citing her citizenship issue was taken up in courts today the court ordered Geetha to file objections on the petition.
Meanwhile sources close to Minister Sarath Amunugama say that he is going to fight on behalf of MP Geetha Kumarasinghe, presumably because she has been his long standing partner although married to a Swiss citizen.

I am not fan from Ms. Kumarasinghe, but when she opens her mouth, I feel she is not even good to be a road side fish monger. Wattiamma type cant bring nothing only disgrace to already fallen nation. She had no basis for lanken kind of ppolitics, rather, she could produce few films so that she could entertain the folks. Everyone is not talented to do politics. But Meeharaka Rajapakshe allowed every low lives to enter politics – within his terms. Consequences have been more than clear to this date. The other man that joined to MR group was Jackson Anthony, .. who promoted all MR as Rajano… today, I think the bugger has gone hidden somewhere not being able to face it right. In lanken culture, you dont need to know the pedigree of a person, bu tto follow.. as any others do.. that was the case with Randeniya, Nanda Malini or other artists… if they did not get in to the bang wagan, may be they thought, they would have lost in their carrier. Most of the artists in lanka are fools. They dont have proper education – except few that earned Wisarada degree levels. But the injections of Mahar Raja to have worked on those too were like an epidemic in lanken culture. They enjoy with the surface informaton, not caring anything beyond. These Artists in my days, i mean late 80ties sent a great message so that lanken youth could be saved from not being captured to arbitory killings. But very same gayakayo like Nandamalini to have been caught by MR idiocy is a greater question to me acutally. When she became Swiss citizen she lost her SL citizenship. If she has not applied and received dual citizenship she is not SL citizen at the moment. She might be staying and working illegally in SL.
She should have informed Department of Immigration and Emigration when she received Swiss citizenship.
I suspect that Mrs Kumarasinghe has committed more than one criminal offence.
Why does Mrs Kumarasinghe not show relevant documentation to clear the doubts?

When the Holder of this travel document acquires the citizenship of another country he should himself notify it to the citizenship division of this department through the Sri Lankan mission of that country immediately.

When, where and how did she regain SL citizenship again?
Is Geetha a SL citizen at the moment?
Controller, please check your records and charge Geetha for any criminal offences. If necessary deport her to Switzerland.
