Mobile CCTV Surveillance; Police Van Films Anti-Government Protesters

Sri Lankan Police deployed a mobile CCTV van around the mass protest organised by the opposition parties. The mass protest march and demonstration is organised against state oppression, social degradation and corruption and to push for the abolishment of the Executive Presidential system. A picture captured by journalist Dinidu de Alwis shows a mobile CCTV van to record footage of anti-government protesters in Slave Island. Image courtesy Twitter / @dinidu

Lalith Weeratunge’s THREAT to the international community that there will be CHAOS in Lanka if there is a war crimes trial of Mahinda Jarapassa is nothing but nonsense.
Most Sri lankans are heartily sick of the CORRUPT, CRIMINAL and UNEDUCATED Jarapassa Family and cronies dictatorship and would be happy to see them all frog marched to the Hague. It is only once Sri Lanka is liberated from the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime that the country which is till under the curse of KUVENI will be liberated – now that the barbaric LTTE is finished, we need to finish off this regime – and the easiest and CLEANEST way would be to send the Jarapassa brothers and their war criminal friends to the Hague!

Can not this kind of filming be jammed electronically by those
    interested – action needs reaction?

    Who collects the scattered flowers?

[“The scattered tea goes with the leaves and every day a sunset dies.”]-William Faulkner quotes (American short-story Writer and Novelist, Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949, 1897-1962)

When you eat a Shark-fin soup
sitting on a Chinese rooftop Restaurant
    did you see that
    ragged orphan boy
    at the World’s end
    drinks muddy water
and his sister just attended the age
    ‘Puberty’ on the road?
Her slim body she looks in a broken mirror
that covered with a torn cloth
    a city political banner?
    Be careful my sibling!
    The handsome politicians’
boisterous sons fly on the streets
    with their shiny Limousines
    who’re greedy for fresh flowers
    like their gentle fathers?

To the novelist Ru Freeman for her new book ‘On Sal Mal Lane’!

[On this road live the middle class and dirt poor; youth vivacious with talent, or misshapen by abuse.A looming civil war threatens to engulf the multiethnic Sri Lankan street of Ru Freeman’s novel.]-Cristina Garcia

In the western world local councils use cctv camera hoisted on parking wardens cars. They drive around and film parking offenders.

In the wonder of asia they improvise and use ot to catch political offenders.

‘ Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.Your gold and silver are corroded.Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.Look! the wages you have failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you.The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence.You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men who were not opposing you.’ (Warning To Rich Oppressors.Holy Bible.James. ch.5.1-6)

On this issue I beg to differ with everyone.

State security machinary all over the world do this kind of thing. But they are not so crude as the Sri Lankans, especially filming from white vans – given the horrible legacy of whitevanning in Sri Lanka.

The US and Israel are the pastmasters in this kind of game. I am told that recently in a ducumentary aired in Australia any person anywhere taking part in any protest in Australia was secretly filmed, their telephones bugged and a secret dossier maintained.

The irony of it all is governments never trust the citizens who vote them into office.

Except, the western world’s governments do not ‘whitevan’ dissenters into oblivion!

It is true that so called enlightened democracies do spy, snoop and even infiltrate protest movements but they aren’t into torturing and disappering person like GOSL. So this snooping by GOSL has an aspect to it that is not present in the West.

This image proves a valid point.

In Sri Lanka descent to the oppressive rule is not tolerated, but the regime says to the outside world there is everything in this country (freedom of speech, thought and demonstrating once political will in democratic means). But all this is there only on paper and not in practice.

Most of the comments made to this news item make me laugh. Hey guys what is so special about it? I am sure some of you commenting to this article live in western countries. Aren’t such Surveillance been done by the police in countries like England, Germany France Canada etc.?
I have taken part in number of demonstrations in England, France and Germany and witnessed it myself how the police in these countries carryout such Surveillance during demonstrations. They even photograph individuals. Therefore I cannot understand why you guys make such a big Ha Hu when Sri Lankan police is doing such a thing.
