By S. Sivathasan –
I share some rare photos of Modi a friend of mine sent me. As of now they have scarcity value. Soon they will be commonplace. The images of his saffron clad early years illustrate his search then after truth and reality. His mature image has now captured the minds of all India. From the present transit point he will perhaps go where destiny takes him.
Modi is one among a few noteworthy personages who have left a mark in history. When I look at his early journey I am reminded of the life of Subhas Chandra Bose as recounted in his autobiography. He was from a wealthy family and he was endowed well intellectually. At age 18 came the inevitable curiosity to know reality. He left his home and went ‘guru hunting’ in the Himalayas in caves and jungles. None of the sannyasins satisfied him. Then he returned, read many books avidly and he says gobbled up The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda.
Therein he came across a line “Service to humanity and salvation unto you”. He made it his credo in life and set out to live by it. The course to it lay through involvement in politics and the target was India’s independence. Parents sensing danger sent him to Cambridge to do well academically and to secure a place in the ICS. He was successful but refused to sign the pledge to serve the British. He says that he couldn’t give that pledge and yet fight for India’s independence.
The similarity one sees is in the search for a noble ideal. Faith lured them both to Mother India. As with Bose, in Modi too there was no turning back. This may explain his austere discipline in food and drink and yoga for relentless work. To see a higher purpose and to realize it, one needs a mentor with a halo. Both Bose and Modi had an exemplar in Swami Vivekananda. “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached” and “Him I call a Mahatma whose heart bleeds for the poor” were words to stir the youth and to keep them in the grip of idealism.
They responded with their passionate and selfless work. The first we saw in Bose and the next we see in Modi at its full flush. Coincidentally names too are similar. Vivekananda was Narendranath. Modi’s first name is Narendra and a bronze statue is prominently by his side ever to energise and to enthuse.
“The following are some rare pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi living as a sadhu in himalayas in his younger age. According to Lord Krishna, the spiritual knowledge of Bhagavad Gita was originally meant for the raja-rishis, the saintly kings, who would help guide society with that divine knowledge.
evam parampara praptam
imam rajarshayo viduh
– Bhagavad Gita 4.2
“Through the spiritual chain of parampara the saintly kings understood this spiritual knowledge of yoga, union with the divine.”
Let us pray that for the first time modern India will be guided by a raja-rishi, and society will again be governed by dharma.” – So says the sender of the photos.
The concept of ‘Raja – Rishi’ connotes the same one as Plato’s ‘Philosopher King’. When expectations run high among Indians on grounds that are substantive, is it proper to say “His record shows, that he could be a dangerous person”?

It is, really, really funny. India Got independence on August 1947, and Modi born 17 September 1950, 3 years later.
What am I missing here? Are you talking about his Father?
Narendra Modi

Narendra Damodardas Modi (About this sound pronunciation (help·info), born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician and the prime minister-designate of India, due to be sworn in on 26 May 2014.[1] Modi, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.

Amarasiri,
You are missing a lot here, my friend ….. You think India’s independence is complete … Not at all!
Take this as a example … India is used by the west to put wedges between India and all other countries across Asia… India’s past leaders have no idea what’s happening to them by getting advises from the west … Even cavity searches are done for cases which cavities are not at all connected …. This philosophical giant in Asia is just domesticated animal in front of the west … Obedient servant and used left and right … Ask Pakistan how it had been used and abandoned …
Modi has uphill battle to make India truly independent and make it a beacon in this Asian century ….
India never had a government until this month … Now there is no oppostion … If the opposition consist of third rate politicians in Tamilnadu, it is much better for India not to have them …. There is a very good chance that these selfish racist Tamil polticians would be exposed and rediculed across India in near future …
India is getting my respect for the first time in my short life … All upto Modi to take this great country to the height it deserves … But, we have to wait for some more time to see whether he has the guts to put the country in the right path to achieve the genuine INDEPENDENCE and to become true leader across Asia …

Dear Amarasiri
It is very sad that people who are pining for the best for Sri Lanka, are desperate, considering she is the hands of very bad people. In their mind they want to rescue Sri Lanka. Due to helplessness they are clutching at straws.
So his desperate mindset, takes Sivadasan hostage, and induces a mental confusion between the educational backgrounds of Modi and Subas Chandra Bose, the well known Freedom Fighter.
By any stretch of the imagination Modi is no Bose. It is a sin even to think that. Due to psychological need to find saviors for Sri Lanka, people like Sivathasan conjure the best attributes for “potential” saviours, Narendra Modi for example, even though his past stinks.
The mind plays tricks due to the need for emotional anaesthesia. So Sivathasan while writing his article, gets mixed up the education of Subas Chandra Bose with that of the illiterate Modi. This is how the confusion occurred in the Article. Even today does Modi know what Cambridge means?

Thanks for the clarification on Bose. I was wondering if Modi was 100 years old and did not look that old.

Rajapaksa Motto: Small Win Big Government
So, Rajapaksa has too many Shills to be taken care of.

Indra, RE: Bose
“When I look at his early journey I am reminded of the life of Subhas Chandra Bose as recounted in his autobiography. “
Yes, S. Sivathasan, goes to the memory lane of Bose to compare with Modi. They are two different people at two different times.
Let’s see who Subosh Chandra Bose was. We was a confused Indian Nationalist, and traitor who wanted to sell British Colonialism to Nazi Colonialism and or Japanese Colonialists. His idea was that I will join even the Devil to get of the British.
The First Word War was a war between the Imperialists and Colonialists to divide the World. Germany and Turkey lost and the spoils were divided among the winners. World War 2 started when World War 1 ended. The League of Nations was a joke, with Italy invading Libya and Ethiopia and the Spanish Civil War.
World War 2 was the Second Imperialist and Colonial War, where Germany and Japan wanted a part of the spoils. It is here that Bose, the Traitor, participated. Had Bose’s Axis Allied been successful, we all would not be living today, No Modi, and we all will be speaking Deutsche and Say Hail the Fuhrer or the Emperor in Japanese in German or Japanese.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subhas_Chandra_Bose
His nationalistic temperament came to light when he was expelled for assaulting Professor Oaten for the latter’s anti-India comments. He later joined the Scottish Church College at the University of Calcutta and passed his B.A. in 1918 in philosophy.[32] Bose left India in 1919 for England with a promise to his father that he would appear in the Indian Civil Services (ICS) Examination. He went to study in Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and matriculated on 19 November 1919. He came fourth in the ICS examination and was selected but he did not want to work under an alien government which would mean serving the British. As he stood on the verge of taking the plunge by resigning from the Indian Civil Service in 1921, he wrote to his elder brother Sarat: “Only on the soil of sacrifice and suffering can we raise our national edifice”.[33] Finally, he resigned from his civil service job on 23 April 1921 and returned to India.[34]
Subhas Chandra Bose (About this sound listen (help·info); 23 January 1897 – 18 August 1945 (aged 48)[1]) was an Indian nationalist whose defiant patriotism made him a hero in India, but whose attempt during World War II to rid India of British rule with the help of Nazi Germany and Japan left a troubled legacy.[4][5][6] The honorific Netaji (Hindustani language: “Respected Leader”), first applied to Bose in Germany, by the Indian soldiers of the Indische Legion and by the German and Indian officials in the Special Bureau for India in Berlin, in early 1942, is now used widely throughout India.[7]

There is a lot of hype and expectations on Modi in India just as Obama made a great entry some years back. Yes we can, MODIfication etc. Fact is that things are easier said than done.
Dreams will remain dreams if realities are not addressed. Can the Gujrat model fit all India? Can a country be modelled on a state with all its complexities and external ramifications. We need to wait and see a few months and years down the line.

Ah so much faith in this man.
In the euphoria of Modi’s resounding election victory all his faults are being brushed over, mostly by writers of Hindu origin, including Mr Sivathasan who is even trying to move Modi into that hallowed imaginary turf of, ‘Raja Rishi’.
Mr Sivathasan, I hope your absolute faith is not misplaced.
It is Hindu nationalism that brought Modi to power. Modi may be a seeker of truth (whatever one may imply what ‘truth’ is) and may have been guru hunting in the caves of the Himalayas. Does this mean that he is ‘Raja Rishi’ material?
The problem lies in the fact that Modi is an ardent Hindu. Violence and Hinduism in India has never been too far apart. And Modi has already tasted violence in its most evil form. In a riot fanned by religious hatred during Modi’s first term as leader of Gujarat over a thousand Muslims were killed. His complicity in that awful tragedy is not a matter of conjecture alone.
Mr Sivathasan may believe that Modi’s heart will bleed for the poor. I hope Sivathasan Ayyah says will be true and not limited to the Hindu poor but the huge number of Muslim poor and the Dalit poor as well.
Time will certainly tell.

Well, there is some evidence for this. What do the Hindus Want to Hide? The Church wanted to hide the fact that the Earth Rotates on its own axis, and goes around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, like the other planets, but could not. Still 25% of Americans believe in the Myth.

The Hindus: An Alternative History Paperback by Wendy Doniger (Author) 196 customer reviews Almost half of all one star reviews occurred in the past few days, and among them only one is an Amazon verified purchaser. It seems there is a concerted effort on bringing the rating down for this book, ever since the book was withdrawn from India.- Looks like Hindu Shills in action and want to hide the myths of Hinduism -Amarasiri
“Don’t miss this equivalent of a brilliant graduate course froma feisty and exhilarating teacher.” -The Washington Post An engrossing and definitive narrative account of history and myth, The Hindus offers a new way of understanding one of the world’s oldest major religions. Hinduism does not lend itself easily to a strictly chronological account. Many of its central texts cannot be reliably dated within a century; its central tenets arise at particular moments in Indian history and often differ according to gender or caste; and the differences between groups of Hindus far outnumber the commonalities. Yet the greatness of Hinduism lies precisely in many of these idiosyncratic qualities that continues to inspire debate today. This groundbreaking work elucidates the relationship between recorded history and imaginary worlds, the inner life and the social history of Hindus.
5.0 out of 5 stars I personally am enriched by the book’s perspectives, May 12, 2014 By jana fortier – See all my reviews This review is from:
The Hindus: An Alternative History (Paperback) The book is a great example of the importance of ancient laws in the contemporary consciousness of anyone interested in Hinduism, as a social order, a moral code, or religious practice. Read it to enjoy the author’s insights as she paints a picture of the major themes and debates about Hinduism. The emphasis on interpreting perspectives of minorities (women, low castes) makes for some memorable moments. I personally am enriched by the book’s perspectives, whether reading from Chapter 2, about Hindu ideas about time… to Ch 19, about Hinduism’s interactions with the Muslim Mughal emperors… to Ch 23, the diaspora of Hindus worldwide. For readers who haven’t studied the basics of Hinduism (in classroom or at home), you may want to shoot over to Google Books to read more descriptions & definitions of Dharma, Karma etc or go read a bit from Hindu classics such as the Laws of Manu, the Arthasasthra (Economics), Rig Vedas, Mahabharata etc.
By Jayarathina (India) – See all my reviews This review is from: The Hindus: An Alternative History (Hardcover) I began to read this book as a Streisand effect of it being withdrawn in India because of pressure from “some quarters”. To tell the truth I did not find anything bad as they projected in the media. One thing that I greatly admired in this book it that she has given equal importance to south Indian Hinduism. Which is hard to get these days. Most negative criticism this books received are silly ones. This book is an overview of Hinduism not an in-depth analysis. Even though I do not agree with the Author’s interpretation at times, this is over all a great book for understanding India and Hinduism. I have to admit, it is not a easy read for me. But it is worth it. my view of Hinduism will never be the same.

Tamodaya is dreadfully wrong on both counts.
TNA/Lankan Tamils did not boycott Modiji’s inauguration. They only
courteously declined to be part of MR’s delegation – for good and understandable reasons. You will see the TNA soon taking wings to Delhi at the invitation of the Indian PM soon.
MR, by all accounts, was a “reluctant” invitee. It was a blanket invite to all heads of SAARC. Personally, I welcome the invite because it can narrow – not widen – space between Delhi and the Rajapakses.
The decision by TN CM Jayalalitha and Vaiko to boycott the historic inauguration is a measure by which one can judge to what extent Tamils in India will go out to make huge sacrifices on behalf of their cousins in the Island. A harbinger Colombo is well advised to treat with circumspection – an area in which they are generally found wanting.

The European constructions of the left and right doesnt have much meaning in India. It doesnt fit the socio historical narrative of Indian society.
The Congress was a dynastic party- a casteist party – ( cast the family passes down the job from granfather to father to son – the job of a perspon is determined by ones cast)- this is what is the present day congress is all about. But some how the English speaking elite thinks the congress is Left and narendra Modi right.
Narendra Modi comes from a OBC background – official backwards class. None of their family is of the ruling class – but he has become a ruler – the classic sign of what the Americans might call meritocracy – Like Obama. Unlike the Americans one calls him a leftist ( quite correctly) but Modi a right wing – surely if meritocracy is the argument then Modi is of the left.
Riots – India with its billion peoples has riots every now and then. The biggest riot in modern post independence India is the anti Sikh riot where even the Army entered the Skikhs holiest shrine – The Golden temple. Its was the Congress party nonetheless. But somehow the Indian left thinks Congress is the Left
The Gujerat riots happened a day after Modi was sworn in. So within that short period he managed to put the riot down. Qudos to him. All courts have found him not guilty..
Modi is the first prime minister of India who was born after Independence. This is a seismic shift. Thee old elite is gone.
Also this is the first time that India voted out side of the caste, regional politics. Even in majoirty Muslim areas BJP won. This is unstomachable for most ‘leftist’ in India.
The left/right arguement in India is irrelavant

“Where are all the Muslims gone? After Modi’s victory very few Muslims comment here!! Wonder why.”
Modi says he is every Indian’s Prime Minister. There is a Muslim Minister, a lady as well in his Cabinet. She is educated, does nor wear the Hijab or Abaya or Niquab, the traditions of the desert Arabs, but wears the Sari.
Who says a Muslim women have to wear a Hijab or Abaya or Niquab?
Unfortunately, in South Asia, the Ulema, and the Mullah Still do not allow Muslim Women to go to the Mosques, whereas during the Prophet Mohamed’s time, it was allowed and there were even women preachers…

Once a prominent Congress member in the Rajya Sabha, she left the party in 2004 due to a strain in relationship with top party leaders for her close association with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-headed NDA Government and joined the BJP.
Heptullah, who was reelected to the Upper House five times between 1986 and 2012, was elected to a one-year term as the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha in 1985, and she again served in that post from late 1988 to mid-2004. Rising quickly in the BJP leadership, she was fielded by the party as a candidate for the post of Vice President against the UPA nominee, Hamid Ansari. She, however, lost the election.
When Nitin Gadkari became the President of the BJP in 2010, she was appointed as one of the 13 vice presidents of the party. She had almost lost prominence in the BJP when Rajnath Singh became new chief of the party. Heptullah was dropped from the post of BJP vice president and was made a member of the party’s national executive.
An eminent writer, Heptullah has published several research papers in foreign and Indian journals and also contributed to many Indian and foreign magazines on issues relating to women and social development.
74-year-old Heptullah, has also worked as a member of the Advisory Committee and Editorial Board of ‘The Indian Journal of Zoology’ and ‘Journal of Anatomy’.
Born in Bhopal, she is married and has three daughters. She holds both a Masters’ of Science Degree in Zoology, and a Ph.D. in Cardiac Anatomy from the University of Denver.

In India every one is a minority.
The Tamil speaking tamil Nadu, Kannada speaking karnataka, Konkan speaking Goa, Kutch speaking Gujerat, Mythili, Tulu are all minorities in terms of Language. Then again if you take all the minority language groups together The Hindi speaking belt becomes a minority. In some ways a HIndi spekaing Muslim male has got more access to central government than a Tamil speaking Hindu female. Trying to construct minorities in term of religion is not the sole arbitrator of minority status. Modi has gone beyond such Identity based politics
The Modi government has
M Venkaiah Naidu: Urban Development Housing, Urban Poverty Alleviation, Parliamentary Affairs – a ‘minority’ from Andhra pradesh
Modi – a ‘minority’ from Gujerat
Nirmala Sitharaman: Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge), Finance Corporate Affairs – a Tamil
Dr Najma A Heptulla – A minority Muslim
There are seven women members in the union council of ministers and six of them have been given Cabinet rank
There are three Dalits, and five tribals in the Union Council of Ministers.

MR to visit Maldives ‘very soon’

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday said that he would visit the Maldives “very soon”.
President Rajapaksa made this comment during the bilateral discussions held with Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom – both of whom are in India for Indian prime minister-elect Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony on Sunday.
The two leaders discussed a number of matters of mutual interest, including the joint economic commission.
The progress of the memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on youth and skills development, sports and training in various sectors was discussed. The MoUs were signed when the Maldivian President was in Sri Lanka on a state visit in January.
President Rajapaksa thanked Maldives for its support to Sri Lanka in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), noting that Maldivian officials in Geneva worked actively on behalf of Sri Lanka.
President Yameen had a specific request for President Rajapaksa – to make a visit to Maldives. President Rajapaksa accepted the invitation, saying that he would visit the Maldives “very soon”.
