The Kennel Association of Sri Lanka headed by its Patron the current Sports Minister’s mum Srima Dissanayake and driven by President Manisha Wimalasekere has created more controversy than staging the dog show itself, when auditors doing a routine check found out that based on a letter provided by the current Minister Navin Dissanayake, the stadium officials were instructed to under charge the Kennel Association of Sri Lanka a whopping sum of Rs 580,000.

Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium officials confirmed that they received Rs 200,000 as opposed to Rs 780,000 that they would have normally generated from such an event, which included the air conditioning comforts for the dogs throughout the day.
Usually ‘Dog Shows’ are held in an outdoor environment and by staging this event in the indoor stadium, the expensive carpet laid on the professional and expensively laid floors had been soiled by the 150 canines urine and excrement throughout the day.
“The kennel Association of Sri Lanka and ‘Dog Shows’ don’t fall under the Ministry of Sports and it was surprising to note that the normalcy of not permitting animals into the indoor stadium had been broken” said Panduka Keerthinanda the former Chairman of the Sugathadasa Stadium when contacted by Colombo Telegraph.
Colombo Telegraph reliably learns that in the sports stadium’s 32 year old history not a single Chairman had entertained any events for animals within the indoor stadium, maintaining strict disciplines and protecting the expensive facilities of the stadium where International events also are held.
When Colombo Telegraph contacted the Stadium officials to get booking and rates and details for staging a similar event, we were informed that this was the first and last time that they were going to rent out the premises for any animal event to to be held. “ We have received immense flak over staging this event and the management is not permitting anymore ‘Dog Show’ bookings the official said.
“The only sport out of the 48 disciplines which are registered as associations, unions and clubs that fall under the Ministry of Sports especially where animals are involved is the ‘Equestrian’ sport discipline which involves horses. Dog Shows is not a sport and does not fall under such category ” said the Sugathadasa Stadium booking official.
Booking rate charges for School Events, National Sports Festival and Sports Associations is the lowest. For International Sport Events, Sports Associations and Education Programs the rate is higher. However events such as these that fall under Commercial Events or Musical Shows the rental charge is at premium rates.
The Minister Dissanayake when contacted earlier on another story told Colombo Telegraph to email any questions if any, but through experience we have learnt that he does not even does as he says.

Passing or failing the GCE A/L has NOTHING to do with this… it is a simple matter of not peddling influence by virtue of the office one holds. This is particularly egregious when someone in the public domain does this by brow-beating officials (those who administer the Sugathdasa Stadium) who in one way shape or form have a ‘subordinate’ position to the person holding office (the Sports Minister).
I am not suggesting at all that the CT report above is true, so it is up to the minister to clarify whether or not he did what he is accused of, and if he has, then he should have the decency to reimburse the shortfall to the stadium account and also pay for the soiling of the indoor facility.
I thought we all voted to see the end to this type of pathetic public abuse. C’mon Navin, play the game will you?

This family corruption is worse in the UNP. It even goes into honourary jobs, private sector positions, positions in associations etc.
For example Wickrema weerasuriya (who married Gamini Dissanayake’s sister)was for a long time the chairman of Singapore owned Ceylon Grain Elevators company. This is not because Wickrema is a major share holder of the company or an expert on flour manufacturing.Foreign companies generally look for well known locals who can lobby for them.When Grain elevators came to the country JR was the President and Gamini Dissanayake was a powerful Minister.The local guys love these jobe where there is no work but get pained handsomely by the foreign company . All they have to do is to get various unfair benefits for the company via their seedy contacts
But what happened when Wickrema Weerasuriya ( at the young age of 80 !)retired from Grain Elevators. He manuvered to have his son senaka Weerasuriya appointed Chairman of Grain Elevators ! ! Looks like the locals are corrupting the foreigners with the evils of nepotism, influence peddling and selling the country down the drain.
This is the same thing that other so called private sector stars did. Stanley Jayawardena who was Chairman of Lever brothers( ceylon) ensured that his not so bright son-in-law Amal Cabral ended up as Chairman of lever Brothers(ceylon).
The same thing was done by CP de Silva , Lalith De Mel etc. These guys were not major shareholders but got to positions through administration.( unlike chaps like Dammika Perera or Harry Jayawardena who actually own the company and can decide who their successor should be) Then after that they manuvered to have their sons in the same positions.
So we cannot say there is a level playing field anywhere in Sri Lanka. Navin Dissanayake , leave alone becoming a minister ( for sports & tourism !) should not even be a transport manager of a small company. His attitude is all corrupt.
But they will argue that they are elected by the people. But then who got them nominations ? Their fathers ! By the same token no one can say that Basil Rajapakse or Namal Rajapakse were elected by the people. In 2010 who ever MR nominated would have won. If MR nominated AT Ariyaratne for Gampaha in 2010 surely he would have won.But of course MR wanted Basil & Namal.
The whole system is a joke but no body is laughing because we are all victims.It is a doghouse .
