MoU With The JHU: Maithripala Must A Be A Deng Hsiao Peng, Not A Mikhail Gorbachev

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

“I hate the goddamn system! But until someone comes along with changes that make sense, I’ll stick with it.” – Clint Eastwood as “Dirty Harry” Callaghan, in ‘Magnum Force’ (1973)

Those who criticize my continued ‘nonaligned’ approach to the Presidential election and the candidates, as well as my refusal to convert unthinkingly to the cause of the joint opposition, make the cardinal error of confusing governance, government and the State. That is not an error a political scientist is permitted; still less one of Marxian and Leninist provenance such as I am. I agree with all the criticisms made by the Opposition of the present regime and even go beyond them in some aspects. However, those are criticisms about bad governance, and require a solution in precisely that realm. Bad governance must not be confused with the structure and system of the State; the framework of the state.

While I have no problem with the prospect of a Maithripala Sirisena presidency, my problem with the Opposition’s project is that it will not merely displace the regime—which is fine by me—but will weaken the core of the state through the Constitutional ‘shock therapy’ of a 100 day abolition project. JR Jayewardene’s modernizing revolution was located in the domain of the state system; the form of the state – the shift to an elected executive Presidency. I do not think it should be fundamentally reversed or upended.

JHU Maithri MOUOf the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a very diverse four (the US, Russia, China, France) have executive presidential systems. Only the UK does not. Of the members of the emerging/pivotal powers represented in the BRICS, all (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) except India have presidential systems.  I am therefore utterly unconvinced that the executive Presidential system needs to be abolished, still less in one hundred days, or that it is intrinsically inferior to the system of parliamentary government. It certainly needs to be reformed.

Reforms are necessary to overcome stagnation and sclerosis. Reforms must not dismantle or destabilize the state system. I supported Mikhail Gorbachev’s Glasnost and Perestroika but I regret doing so with uncritical, over-optimistic enthusiasm. It is a mistake I shall never repeat. Fidel Castro was far more cautious and perspicacious. While being a stringent critic of the stale and stagnant Soviet socialism, he warned as early as 1987 that “we may wake up one day and find that the Soviet Union has disappeared”.  Gorbachev was right in his criticism and zeal for reform, but he could not control that reform process, which got of hand and was hijacked by Boris Yeltsin and his ‘ radical reformers’ with their 500 Day plans of “ shock therapy”, who went on to agree to the dissolution of the USSR. Putin rightly called it “the greatest geostrategic tragedy of the twentieth century”. It took Putin and the powerful Presidency to restore some measure of status and self-respect for Russia.

Maithripala Sirisena must not be a Mikhail Gorbachev and Ranil and CBK must not be permitted to play Yeltsin. Mr. Sirisena, a former Maoist, must instead become a Deng Hsiao Peng, who will radically reform the system without damaging, still less dissolving, the core of the state system.

What this country needs is the right combination of change and continuity. While Mahinda represents continuity without change, what the CBK-RW-MangalaRajitha bloc represents is change without continuity. Both extremes are equally dangerous.

This is where the JHU comes in, as a balancing factor, helping take Maithripala to his natural zone: the moderate nationalist center rather than the deracinated CBK-Ranil liberal fundamentalism.

I never thought I’d say this, and I am acutely aware of the ironies of the expression when used in relation to a Sinhala Buddhist nationalist party, but “thank God for the JHU!”  The hundred days MoU just signed between the common opposition candidate and the Jathika Hela Urumaya introduces the possibility of a course correction in the vitally important Sirisena campaign. It is also a useful counterweight to the abolitionist liberal fundamentalism of the earlier MoU between Mr. Sirisena and the array of characters in the joint opposition; a MoU which the JHU rightly stayed out of. The JHU has introduced some semblance of balance and nudged the Sirisena project in the direction of a Middle Path—a path that would be the natural inclination of a traditional SLFPer such as Mr. Sirisena.

The crucial points of the MoU with the JHU are as follows:

Clause1- Constitutional reforms as regards the executive powers, good governance and electoral system.

Clause 2- Abolishing the draconian powers of the executive presidency without jeopardizing national security and territorial integrity. Introducing and electoral system with features of the first-past-post and proportional representative systems to ensure stable government. (My emphasis-DJ)

Clause 6- Action against efforts to arraign the Commander-in-Chief and other military leaders with war crimes at international tribunals.

Of these, the core element is the commitment to “Abolishing the draconian powers of the executive presidency without jeopardizing national security and territorial integrity.”

One notes that the commitment is not to abolishing the executive presidency as such, but to “constitutional reform as regards executive powers”. The pledge is not to the divestiture of the presidency of all its executive powers but to abolish the “draconian powers”, i.e. the dangerous excess. Most commendable in the JHU’s insistence and Mr. Sirisena’s readiness to embrace the principle that even the reform of the executive presidency must fall between certain red lines and that those red lines pertain to security: “Abolishing the draconian powers of the executive presidency without jeopardizing national security and territorial integrity.”

The JHU is far more grounded than the civil society intellectuals around President Kumaratunga who came up with the abolitionist slogan many years ago, in the CBK second term. The motive was clear: to permit her to remain in politics and at the helm of national affairs. They understood that this was not possible by Constitutional means, because she could not obtain a two thirds majority. Thus they sought a leveling solution—a return by an extra constitutional pathway, to the Westminster system under which CBK could have been a PM without term limits, just like her mother. In pursuit of this Constitutional Revolution for which she needed the support of the TNA—at the time a proxy of the LTTE–she even permitted Prabhakaran’s combatants to violate the CFA and make a surprise seaborne landing behind the lines of the rebellious Karuna forces drawn up along the Verugal River.

The JHU is not sullied by such motives. Unlike Ranil and Chandrika, it has been consistently in the anti-LTTE camp; it has been nationalist and security conscious. In the form of Champika Ranawaka and Athureliye Rathana Thero it has far smarter and more responsible political minds than the Sudu Nelum/CFA/ISGA/PTOMS elements around Chandrika and Ranil. Perhaps most significantly, it has a first rate political scientist, Anurudhdha Pradeep, who is a more literate and far better student of politics than the surfeit of lawyers and NGO types around the CBK-Ranil bloc.

Here we go again , our self proclaimed Political scientist trying a different approach this time , what has he got this time round to back MR , oh yes try to frighten the punters by showing all the negative impacts of the abolition of the executive presidency , who is going to listen to this double tongued creatures sermons , is the only question ? if any body is prepared to listen to his “bana” he or she needs to get his/her head examined first ,

here is just a reminder how DJ advised his punters about the 2014 UN resolution !

This is what DJ had written about UN Draft Resolution in CT,

“The purported draft does not call for an INTENATIONAL independent inquiry. It calls for an independent and credible inquiry. More accurately it calls upon the Government of Sri Lanka to institute such an inquiry. “

on the contrary this is what paragraph 8 said:

“Welcomes the High Commissioner’s recommendation for an independent credible international investigation in the absence of a credible national process with tangible results, and requests the Office of the High Commissioner to assess progress toward accountability and reconciliation, to monitor relevant national processes, and to investigate alleged violations and abuse of human rights and related crimes by both parties in Sri Lanka…..”

Final result , UN led investigation is almost completed , DJ has no shame at all and still trying to be a “baka Panditiya”

        Srilal,

I like your straight forward views to DJ’s analysis. Not only this baka Panditiya is vomited (ing) such bad stuffs yesterday, today and will tomorrow…. there are few other baka Panditiyas live (lived) in Colombo University are dancing towards vision-less MR’s medamulane baila including the most top people in Colombo University. Bunch of Colombo university (un)educated senior people are f—king greedy for money and positions and do or say whatever nonsense to get money from MR. Look around the positions that they have in around Colombo region who are from Colombo University appointment by MR.

Someone need to clean this f–king mess the university culture.

Thanks Citizen , this selfish baka pandithaya has lost every thing , he has no shame ,no dignity , no respect no nothing what so ever !
if you have some spare time , go through his earlier essays in Trans current , ground views and CT ,you will see what i mean !
for instance ,he always maintained the view that India has full control of SL affairs at the UNHRC , quite contrary to his theory US had outmaneuvered India and brought three successful resolution against the regime !next , his pet subject , 2009 Geneva temporary victory , man haven’t we had enough of that infamous victory story ! wait, we will reap the fruits of DJ’s victory very soon and he will be held directly responsible for all the mayhem (including the 18 th Amendment), there are many many things he keep changing when it suits him , just look at the leaders he went/goes after , R Premadasa , MR , S Premadasa ? for some strange/bizarre reasons only sirasa/MTV feels fit to cater to this scum , may be they are impressed with his P.hD title , what a sad story .

For those who still believe in Rajapakshe’s Patriotism, this video gives evidence to prove who was the true patriot, Mahinda Rajapakshe or Sarath Fonseka,

      https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=316531325217034&fref=nf

For those who still talk about the opposition as LTTE supporters, caught to International conspiracy, NGO conspiracy, traitors, betrayers, etc, etc, please watch this video, you will know the answer.

Well, whats at stake here is the idea of 2 party democracy.

If My3 loses, Mahinda Rajapaske will swiftly move in and reduce this opposition to nothing. He will not tolerate a “strong opposition” as any average left-wing crony capitalist dictator.

  • 6
    15

And what are those in the MoU which are not disclosed to the public?

    a) How many Ministries?
    b) ”Gifts” from My3 for supporting him?
    c) Privileges?

It’s all about accumulating more personal wealth of Champika, Gammanpilla and Athuraliya Thero in the name religion. Foolish masses will always be fooled by these corrupt politicians. JHU Sense the sinking ship….
Will My3 be exception who fulfil the expectation??

Sudu Nelum – CFA ISGA – PTOMS Uncles and Aunt were all in the front row next to the ex General..

These are the highlights of their speeches.

ISGA Uncle said he will start eliminating corruption on the 9th not the 18th April..

Sudu Aunty says Temple Trees food bill is Rs 25 Million a month. Additional 500,000 spent on Gas Labu and Pineapple every month.

At least Rajapaksa won’t have problems with bowel movements…

Ex General said the President is the 18 Th Richest in Asia, and the son is the 14 the . But no details whether it is among Presidents and PMs or all inhabitants in Asia.

And the Boss bloke ,Sand Sira’s brother said he was warned not to tell anyone that our super highways are expensive.

May be Sira knows where to get cheap ones..

And the waring apparently came from the Finance Ministry..

    Riveting stuff .. Aren’t they ?..

I thought at least one will have the courtesy to mention , our 8 % plus Economic Growth for 5 consecutive years.

    Less than 5 % unemployment,

    2 Million Tourist arrivals

Beautiful roads, pretty capital, and the latest Colombo City project by the Singaporeans.

I guess these issues are not important to these Opposition dudes.

They are driven by jealousy, revenge, and of course commission cheques.

Don’t tell me UNP supporters and financiers don’t like the dosh .

We know that the ex General gave it all to his son in law..Right..

Unless they have all been converted to Buddhist devotees by the Venerable Rathna..

Wonder why Abraham shunned this distinguished gathering who have pledged to eliminate all bad and and evil from Sour motherland and take the inhabitants to peace, prosperity and harmony.

Another thing I noticed was no mention of the Packer Casino ..

Has young Packer already done a deal …

May be Ven Rathna forgotten it too…

DJ is not “non-aligned” though he says so. He is pro incumbent president looking for a place to hide.

Executive presidential system must go and revert to parliamentary system. Japan, India, Canada, UK, Australia are good examples and successful. MS a decent, intelligent, experienced politician, together with the experience and inputs from farsighted ppliticians like RW and Others, who have no vested interests would do justice in formulating the new amendents to the constitution. DJ can wait and watch.

    Dayan Jayatilleke

This is not the time for your [Edited out] lectures.

The need of the hour is to get rid of the ruling kabaragoyas. There is going to be a choice before the people: stick with Rajapaksa or take Maithripala

Stop playing games and let the people know, in the capacity you claim as a “political scientist” and educated and experienced person, (in my humble opinion you [Edited out]), voting for which candidate on January 8th will better serve interests of Sri Lanka.

Let’s see whether you are still hoping for a diplomatic posting from Mara.

Thanks be to the Almighty that we humble Sri Lankans have the almost infallible guidance of an erudite scholar and political scientist in Doctor Dayan Jayatilleka.

Please tell us Doctor, is there any chance, as believed in certain political circles, that if a few days before the elections it becomes clear that His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa will lose the election, that Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the other Excellency, will stage a coup d’état and take over the Government?

What is your considered opinion as to how the Common Candidate Camp and the general population should handle such a situation. Would you advocate they riot, or do you recommend they acquiesce with tail between their legs.

We eagerly await your most valued advice.

Yes, The DJ article is most sagacious. The Sirisena-JHU MoU is probably the best set-up of what Sri Lanka truly needs. Hope the voters will choose wisely.

    DJ,

Whether you are convinced or not about the merits of abolishing the executive presidential system in Sri lanka is irrelevant. You will always be an apologist for the Rajapaksa mafia, often in veiled language that most readers of CT see through so easily. Non aligned you are not. Don’t kid yourself. Marxist-Leninist provenance – you – you must be joking.

The most urgent job at hand is to get rid of the MaRa Family misrule. Whatever means we use to achieve that end is justifiable. Along with him we must throw out the executive presidential system as well. I am surprised how you so far have failed to realize, how absolute power has corrupted our chakravarti ever so absolutely.

    picture tells it all.

It’s not the system of government/Governance that is at fault.

It’s the Mahavansa mentality of the Majority community which is at fault.

The likes of JHU,BBS,Ravana Balaya and DJ are not immune from it.

No salvation for Mother Lanka until she learns to separate state from religion.

Having said that the first step in the right direction, is sending the incumbent president home, rest will be in increments.

I don’t think the common man can be fooled for long with theocratic fascism.

DJ appears to think readers do not know that 10 yrs. of mis-governance
can now be overcome within 100 days, with JHU or not whose support
    is minimal.

Most voters are not bothered about political philosophy, its nuances and variations.
They will vote for the person, who, in their perception will bring down the cost of living, eliminate corruption, wastage and crime.
They want a lanka in which a woman can walk with all jewellery, unmolested and come home to a home and family who are contented.

One has had a chance to do this, during the past decade.
They will decide whether they are better off, or worse.
Lankans abroad wait to see if it would be ‘safe’ to ‘come home’.

  • 5

Dayan is trying hard to put a spoke in the wheel of the opposition collective. By saying JHU has been against LTTE, he is trying to bring some distance between the opposition collective and the minority races in Sri Lanka in order that they will not take part in the voting there by Rajapakse will have a better chance of winning.

Dayan, its not only JHU all Sri Lankans including Tamils and Muslims are happy that LTTE is gone. There are only a few who want LTTE back and of this group most of them are abroad. Its Rajapakse who through KP is trying hard to keep LTTE alive overseas.

Dayan at the end of the day minority communities are going to vote for the opposition. I do not see anything wrong in the agreement signed by JHU and Maithree. All of us know that even after the new constitution there will be a President but the President will be answerable to the Parliament and will not be an Executive President.

My ability to read Sinhala has become a bit rusty due to disuse for approximately 20 years. Will some kind soul comment on whether there is any mention of the 13th Amendment in the document that was signed by the two parties. If my basic understanding is correct, the document does not explicitly state anything against implementing 13A. Does this represent a policy shift by the JHU, who in many ways have maintained a consistent – albeit one with overtly anti-minority overtones,in their dealings with the National issue. If they have indeed made a policy shift it raises an interesting possibility. Has the JHU finally come to realize one of the most fundamental truths in life? Suffering and pain inflicted on the components of an integrated ‘Whole’ will ultimately affect the ‘Whole’. Grief and humiliation can never be compartmentalized to one segment of a Society…..it always comes home to roost.
The readers must give some credit to DJ for he has always (as far as I know) maintained that the 13A is here to stay. I think he lost his lucrative job (and the Champagne receptions) in Geneva by being bold enough to state this in public. BTW, I have fallen in all sorts of trouble in the past defending DJ and RW in these columns before…..but here we go again.
    Best wishes

Yes, we know that you have a soft spot for these two side switchers !
He was with premadasa, then tried it with Chandrika (though she repulsed him), then Ranil (he too repulsed him) and finally got lucky with Mahinda. His repulsion by Chandrika and Ranil now comes out as hatred towards these two.

In answer to your question, Maithri has already ruled OUT devolution and already promised prominence for Buddhism in agreement with JHU.

Stupidity of the ones who sat in the front row to be noticed by professors (the students end up servants to govt. as security for them) is summed up by a great Hindian professor who always joked about himself was an acclaimed convenor from east and west standards and selector of foreign servants.

`Insanity`: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

“The difference between `stupidity and genius` is that genius has its limits.” -Albert Einstein.

There is at least one solution to the problem.

modaya, every nation pays more than what a student pays as fees and for privileges.

No nation in the world displays ignorance like you Yakko land saremas.

Today almost all nations see education as a resource that they can export.

Try migrating once you are professionally qualified and it is no go from the wealthy nations unless you can prove that you would be of assistance to the migrating nation.- their is nothing like easy come easy go.

Not true for developing countries, maybe for the west, they can withstand the brain drain but not countries like SL. Obviously you have fled to the west and hence defend such actions.

          • 2
            3

Developing countries take for example your neighbour (though you live down under) Hindia – they spend over 1000% over the students at IIT’s or partially autonomous institutes. They import any book under the sun on request to librarian even while foreign exchange was a dirty word. Cant you now see men like the Governor reserve Bank a 98% score at IIT Delhi In Engineering being picked up by American Embassy to study in the US and shocks/ taken to task too Greenspan and others when he predicts the dodgy burgers in the freezer out in 2008 and now he has said it again for EU heads of state to take note this time.

`Obviously ¬you have fled¬ to the west and hence defend such actions.`

blood is thicker than water please don’t judge others to your low standards.

Why do enterprises even on streets offer 10-20% discount to students- definitely they don’t need to love them but it is business ploy and once the internet for free keeps them glued they are made to move elsewhere where they get a discount. Same with Travel air line train etc.

I think yours is a misconceived concept.
When the author mentioned ¬whole¬ you should have known from your medical background that `nothing exist as parts and wholes in its natural context`
that goes with education too unless you want to live in the soviet era and no visa.
            Education as a commodity.

            3

BTW do you know the number of professional doctors within the EU itself floating on short term contracts and living where they feel like. the same with hong kong (they don’t need visa or work permit to be in the UK or EU or Canada) they all go back (may be they buy property but leave it and go) because they are sure they wouldnt be killed or mistreated in their land of birth.

As for me I have found a land better than yakko land it surpases in beauty and tranquality- the mountain and the sea short distance first world.

At the end of the day we were born in the world not political boundaries for scumbags who fu*king exploding in population as if others don’t exist and their political power giving them the lions share of nations –

` maybe for the west, they can withstand the brain drain`

Only seeming. White Doc’s GP’s natives of UK are a rare commodity that is being felt everywhere in the island. They have always seen medicine in a different way for each and every one. No medicine is for all and has to custom tailored. Most left for US where language is an asset too and the money plus facilities for research. Therefore its advisable to carry a Euro Medicine Health Plan and go for the best of course one must learn the language too. Spain and France are better and Germany tops it too along with its health care.
I have paid for edu all along so i give a toss but facts are facts.I know of a couple who have won full scholarships all along and like to be professors because of the 3 month year vacation and they are women who like to have children and grow with them in a difficult world (though they are rich enough)

      Dear Dr Nirmalan and ‘Peace’

I was sent Tamil, Sinhala and English copies of A Common People’s Agenda for Just, Democratic and People-friendly Governance. Maybe it’s the same as the MOU. For what it’s worth, here is the English. I hope I havent missed anything out it traying to reformat.

A Common People’s Agenda for Just, Democratic and People-friendly Governance

As Sri Lankans we face several grave challenges. The country, which was once seen as a model of democracy, has degenerated in recent years into a place where its citizens cannot live with dignity and in safety. Among the manifestations of this situation are:

      • the total breakdown of the Rule of Law,
      • the erosion of democratic institutions essential for governance,
      • an unprecedented widening of social disparities and social
      injustices,
      • severe strains on co-existence between different ethnic and religious
communities and increasing disharmony and distrust.

In this situation, the following program is presented so as to re-establish democracy, good governance, social justice and the rule of law. Accordingly, it is proposed that the present authoritarian and corrupt regime be defeated by fielding a common candidate acceptable to all those in agreement with the programme. The immediate tasks will be implemented within a hundred days, including abolition of the current executive presidency and the re-establishment of a parliamentary form of government. Through a new Parliament the rest of the programme will be fulfilled.

To fulfill the immediate tasks and objectives given below, an All-Party Government will be formed for a period of not less than two years.

      Immediate Tasks

      1. The present executive presidential system will be abolished within a hundred days and replaced by a Parliamentary form accountable to the people. Under the Parliamentary system, the President will symbolize national unity and have duties and powers appropriate to the position.

      2. The Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution will be repealed and the independence of institutions essential for democratic governance, such as the judiciary, police, public service, election authorities, Attorney-General, Auditor-General and independent Commissions re- established and further strengthened.

      3. The current preferential voting system will be abolished. The new electoral system will provide for the just representation of all communities and political opinions and will be a mix of the first- past-the-post system, which ensures that every electorate has its own Member of Parliament, and proportional representation.

      4. The oppressive burden of the cost of living of the people will be reduced through granting of a commensurate increase in salaries of the public service and the private sector; strengthen the industrial, agricultural, plantations, fisheries and small industries components of the economy and guarantee a fair price for local produce; develop an effective social safety net for marginalized groups and the poor and, in particular, for women and children, the elderly, pensioners and disabled persons.

In addition, measures will be initiated in the first hundred days to:

      • immediately prevent, through greater transparency and accountability, the present unprecedented large scale fraud, corruption, bribery and earning of commissions as well as the wastage of public funds; take action according to law to deal with abuses that have been committed

      • guarantee the primacy of the Rule of Law, restore democracy on a sustainable foundation of good governance, secure and advance fundamental rights and freedoms, strengthen the right to freedom of expression inclusive of media freedom and the Right to Information, and ensure the right to live in human dignity

      • further develop the right to live in human dignity through re-establishment of the welfare state, and in particular guarantee the right to high quality free education and health services

      • empower youth to successfully meet the challenges of the rapidly changing world, in particular through providing essential technical knowledge and skills and training required for high level employment

      • guarantee dignity and equal opportunity for all citizens in the social, cultural, economic and political spheres

      • create a civilized and moral society and in particular reform the political culture of the country that has sunk to unprecedented depths.

The political parties, groups and citizen’s organizations that are committed to this People’s Agenda shall dedicate themselves towards achieving its objectives.

I am sure you have heard the saying ” Adika Adika Ammyum Naharum” and you are beginning to shift. We are the victims in this whole episode and the 13th Amendment is just a start. It is for the Good, Bad & the Ugly.
I am not sure if was you or your conjoined brother who once wrote that the Bad ( LTTE) were claiming to be fighting for the Good ( yourself ) and inflicting a lot of suffering on the Ugly being the Majority.

Anyone notice how Dayan no longer talks about the assured victory of Mahinda?

NO talk of only targeting the parliamentary elections like before and advising to give up the presidential as a foregone result.

The opposition has put the wind up Dayan. Poor guy, he is going no where and nor is Sajith.
Hopefully both will be relegated to the rubbish heap where they both belong.

IF MS loses, there will be a dictatorship and purges of the type Stalin and Beria carried out. Even now people opposed to the leader are being branded as traitors by well known corrupt elements. Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.

One of the most absurd typical promises made by the opposition via the bile duct of CBK is that they can bring down the cost of living.. Really? How does a government do that except through expensive subsidies? Why shouldn’t we let the market place function for commodities and try to manage the import of oil which drives up transportation costs? more handouts, more welfare? Is that what MS and the motley crew offering? Corruption? really CBK was found guilty of favoring her secret best friend Ronnie Peiris and she claims she can do away with corruption? How about MS’s son in law having a big restaurant in Polonnaruwa? Good governance is not a term CBK was ever familiar with.

      Hi Pakis Pettiya,

Let me answer your question. I know it is a question raised by many MR supporters.
This is how the cost of living is reduced.
Reducing government wastage in maintaining a huge cabinet, vehicles, and all the wastes in public expenditure.
      Better fiscal policy.
In SL, 80% of the government revenue comes from indirect taxation while only 20% is from direct taxation. That means we the consumers pay for the 80% of tax revenue. By having a better taxation system, the burden on people can be reduced.
The government’s actions that resulted in devaluing the Rupee have caused the high cost for imports. Interestingly the luxury vehicles that the MR and his family is buying is free from tax while common man has to pay large amount of tax. It is this taxation that makes cost of living extremely high.
Another example, in 2013 electricity board recorded profits because we could generate 50% electricity from hydro sources. But the electricity price was not reduced and the gover did not want to remove the fuel surcharge tax (that is when 50% is from hydro), because govers transfers cost of its financial mismanagement to electricity cost.
Bringing MS into power is not only MS, CBK and Ranil deciding on economy, instead of (pvt) brothers Ltd, people who are experts on the field will tackle the issue.

    Dayan the Grieving:

You are a highly educated , intelligent ( I am beginning to have my doubts ) conviction ( not convicted ) politician and I hope with a set of core values which are cannot be compromised. If you stand by those values you will have the courage of your conviction and say to your old pal King Mahintha ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and I put the interest of my country and my people before you as you have flouted everything I have stood for.
Then the decision making process to ditch MR becomes a simple task and you don’t have to dither. But by sitting on the fence you have confirmed that you are grieving for MR and will be mourning well past the Constitutional ‘shock therapy’ of a 100 day abolition project.
You might never recover and your intellectual talent would have come to a premature end.

Dayan J – referring “to the dissolution of the USSR” states “Putin rightly called it “the greatest geostrategic tragedy of the twentieth century”. But then the composition of what went as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics a.k.a. the Soviet Union – was in itself an aberration and immoral. Independent countries neighbouring Russia were amalgamated by military force of coerced annexation. Many of these smaller Republics, some of them with Muslim majorities, never considered them part of the Russian Empire and there was continued unrest on their part dealing with their Moscow “imperialist Masters”. One of the thoughts in the minds of Gorbachev and his reformist colleagues (he was not alone in this stupendous decision to the dissolution of The Empire) was to free themselves and the Soviet Union of these unwilling “partners” while doing everything to keep them once they are freed as friends and neighbours in the new reality. The Afghanistan experience, after all, sapped much of the Soviet Unions strengths and energy in a world totally different to that when Stalin was around. The enigmatic Putin, while possessing strong Nationalistic credentials, which endears him to many Russians,
has a KGM mind-set and prefers the old Stalinist order – minus some.
The majority of people in the Soviet Union – exposed to a different and better quality of life in the West – thanks to the coming of IT that removed Russia from the fate of North Korea in terms of knowledge of the day to day happenings of the world – wanted a change. Gorbachev
came out with just that change. He was the right man, with the right idea and at the right moment. The Berlin Wall – and the perfidy that went with it – came down. The hated Police State of the Soviet Union collapsed and many of the satellites around were to find freedom thereupon. Countries like Poland, Hungary and the Czechs are today doing much better on their own than under their Soviet masters.

As to the Presidential system here, I agree with Dayan it should not be done away – hook, line and sinker. In the nature of the Lankan political reality – I avoid the word State because I believe there are at least post-September 2013 two Nations here. This factor, while it is taboo now for discussion will be seen more visibly and accepted as such with the passage of years from now on.

I was close to a senior and respected Cabinet Minister who felt
Sri Lanka is better served with an Executive President to gradually provide justice to the minorities in a scenario where the politicised Buddhist hierarchy will never accept to share, even limited power, with the Tamil. Yet, I agree some of the enormous powers (referred to in 17 A) should be removed from the President. It will be recalled recently the President is believed to have unnecessarily and irresponsibly interfered in the issue with the son of a notorious criminal Minister being allowed bail, while the upright Magistrate went by the Law and refused Bail until ugly pressure was exerted on the poor man. The incorrigible son had, once again, committed a whole series of violent acts including assault and battery. Yet he is free again – making a mockery of the legal system under the Rajapakse rule.

DJ is pretending as if he does not realize what is not written in the MOU. Overall intent of the MOU is to remove MR from his dictatorial powers with lots of illegally acquired wealth and the family dynasty.

JHU and MS do not want to openly admit this fundamental motive behind their joint opposition action because it may not be very well received by the common man who is already brain washed by the current MR regime.

If MR wins this time Sri Lanka will be under the clutches of MR and familial gang for an indefinite period of time and the entire country will be doomed without any law and order.

Billions are being spent for Mahinda’s election campaign. JVP says it printed posters for Mahinda on credit in 2005.How do you think has Mahinda found money to spend billions on his election campaign?
    One more question.
State resources are being used on an unprecedented scale for MR’s campaign.what do you think about it?

    • 1
      0

Our friend Punchi Singho writes “State resources are being used on an unprecedented scale for MR’s campaign” This is an open secret. Time was when MP’s were ousted by free and independent (lower) Courts on election petitions for the mere allegation of using a State vehicle on just one or two occasions by a truant MP/Minister. Those were halcyon years when we held our held high as proud citizens of this country. Times when Courts earned our respect as the Temples of Justice that they certainly were. Today, Champika R, who saw a Ministerial chair only thanks to Mahinda Rajapakse, openly tells the country “the President’s words or written assurances cannot be trusted” Many foreign Govts agree with this view.

It was not long ago, a VVIP – arrogantly used funds from his ministry’s votes to print wedding cards for his son’s wedding. We are told at a Cost of Rs.2,500 each (I don’t know by how much the Invoice was inflated) But I know there were some visitors from Pakistan as the man’s guests at the wedding in one of Colombo’s most expensive and luxurious 5 star hotels.

Although there may be a change in the Govt in mid-January, the institutions of governance that were destroyed in the past decade will take another half a century to be even partially restored. Education, the Police and the judiciary will take much longer. Unruly elements will control society, like now, for a long time to come. Do the Sinhala people realise Mahinda Chinthana has destroyed the country in its four corners. Sri Lanka – or whatever you call it in future, will take a long time to recover to the respectable levels of the pre-1950s.
Will the Sinhala voter again be duped by the likes of Weerawansa by the stale fear of invoking the non-existing LTTE factor.

MS has done something that DJ would not have the guts do. He should have rebelled when he was thrown out of Geneva where he did an excellent job, defending Sri Lankan position. He should remember that his position was given to his arch critic, the corrupt woman Kshenuka whose husband was doing business with terrorists supporting businessmen. Since then Geneva has turned out to be course on SLK. DJ, it is time for you to find your side! Please get in lane and don’t crash into the concrete barrier because of indecision.

    @Mr Kali,
Hi I would love to join you for a drink. But before I do so let me elaborate a bit further on my consistent position on the SL national question:

    1. Srilanka is the traditional homeland of all its people – the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burgers and the other minority groups. We all have equal claim to its history/glories and we all share equal culpability in its flaws. I consider Koneswaram, Mihintale, Ketheeswaram and Ruwanwalisaya as part of my own heritage (“Mageth Urumayai”)

    2. The privileges enjoyed by the minority groups in general and Tamils in particular during the colonial period had to be rectified or re-balanced. That was the inescapable duty of any democratic post-independence government. But in doing so the successive governments clearly over stepped the mark and implemented several measures that were unjust, cruel, violent and were way out of character of the true spirit of the Country and its traditions/history. These unjust measures had to be fought/confronted. The catalogue of errors have been listed on several occasions and I do not have to repeat them.

    3. In the context of 2, the rise of militancy – including armed resistance in the 70s, was inevitable and justified. I will any day defend the rights of a minority group to fight back to defend its rights in the face of blatant injustice…..and that is what prevailed in the country in the 70s and early 80s – as exemplified by the attack on the Tamil Research conference in 1974 and burning of the library in 1981……culminating in the 1983 riots.

    4. However, following the 1987 Indo-Lanka accord – which was imposed on SL by India in no uncertain terms, several opportunities were made available to the Tamil leadership to negotiate honorable peace. In particular Premadasa, Chandrika and finally Ranil offered several opportunities for ‘Honorable peace and true equality’ within a united country. These opportunities should have been taken with open arms and not doing so was a historic mistake (“Varalattu thavaru”). In this context, the LTTE almost became a cancer within the Tamil society that had to be eradicated. My opinion is that the LTTE was bad for Srilanka and worse for the Tamils and eliminating it involved ‘radical surgery with significant collateral damage to healthy and benign surrounding tissues’. In this context to say that the war was fought with “zero casualties” was stupidity personified.

    5. The military defeat of the LTTE was impossible without significant damage to the civilian population. The belief that the war could have been fought in any other way is – in my view, a delusion. I was at the Nallur temple with several thousands of other refugees when fighting with the IPKF started and saw first hand the modus-operandi of the LTTE. They deliberately invited civilian casualties for their own propaganda purposes. I also saw – almost first hand, how the attack on the Jaffna hospital by the IPKF was provoked by the LTTE in a planned and calculated fashion.

    6. Whether or not the deaths in the ‘Vanni’ amounts to a crime in my view, depends on the true intentions (or ‘Chetanawa’) with which the war was fought. I do not have time to go into the specific details but I can refer you to some Holy Hindu (and other religious) Scriptures that deal with the ‘inevitability of war and large scale destruction of ones own kith and kin’ in certain periods of history.

    7. The post war conduct of the State and the Government were vile and inexcusable in that they squandered away a golden opportunity to bring about real peace, dignity, honor and unify the entire country under one ‘Common inclusive Srilankan identity”. All they had to do was to acknowledge the loss and grief of a Community and implement what was already in the constitution. i.e 13A. Instead they went on a ‘Hela’ agenda and attempted to marginalize the minorities. That strategy will always fail – not only due to the Geo-political realities of the Region, but also because injustice and lies will always fail……ultimately.

I know the above will not be to your taste or the taste of many other friends who subscribe to the ‘Hela’ ideology. But, the above are the undeniable facts – atleast as I see them. If you still want that drink, you know who I am and how you can contact me as I am not in the business of shadow boxing.
    Best wishes

      Mahesan Nirmalan

“unify the entire country under one ‘Common inclusive Srilankan identity”

Unification of the entire island can only come from consent of all people and i can only happen when the state, its institutions, rulers and majority of the people recognize and appreciate unity in diversity.

Historically majority is stuck in their Mahawamsa mindset, new exclusive history is being churned out by new breed of nationalistic archaeologists, historians, .. every Tom, Dick and Harry.

” Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burgers and the other minority groups.”

Have you lumped my people in “other minority group”?

It seems we are non people. Racism starts here.

      Dr Nirmalan,

“3. In the context of 2, the rise of militancy – including armed resistance in the 70s, was inevitable and justified. I will any day defend the rights of a minority group to fight back to defend its rights in the face of blatant injustice….”

      (1) Please read some good history books. We were not minorities.
      (2) You do not look like fighting. I do not wish to use any rude words.
      (3) At the end of the year in 2012 there were 10,349 Buddhist temples in the Northern and Eastern provinces. But, at the end of the year 2013 the figure has increased to 10,812, according to Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian from Batticaloa Seenithamby Yogeswaran. The genocidal Sri Lankan State has constructed 463 new Buddhist temples in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils in one year alone. The structural genocide on Eezham Tamils is continuing unabated with the deployment of Sinhala ‘Army and Archaeology’ by Colombo, the ‘Time and Space’ provided through the Geneva discourse by the West and is encouraged by the nexus between the ‘Hindutva’ New Delhi and the ‘Sinhala Buddhist’ Colombo, commented Eezham Tamil political observers in the East.

      Mahesan Nirmalan:

Thanks for clarifying some of the misapprehensions and my attack on you was not personal but rather on what you wrote soon after you returned from your trip to Sri Lanka. That marked you down in my book as someone who was vulnerable to Sri Lankan propaganda to hide their dastardly acts. I am sure you will be the first to admit the extent to which Sinhala Lanka under MR has gone and the amount money they have spent to justify and convince the World that what they did was to eradicate Terrorism. But the World has now come to accept our version of events that it was the State Terrorism presided over by successive Sinhalese Governments which created the LTTE. For me LTTE was a means to an end. The End was to get rid of Sinhalese Tyranny and put in place a system that will guarantee FREEDOM , JSTICE and EQUALITY and above all DIGNITY. Even you cant be blind to the fact that MR is hell bent on Ethnically cleansing Sri Lanka and his programme of Sinhalamisation is going full steam ahead at a relentless pace. But he needs time to complete this programme and there is a vast pool of 20 million who are ready to die for this cause and if you need proof just read what the biggest pretender Dayan writes.
We are not going to get anything from within Sri Lanka and it has to come with help from outside.
The only effective pressure will be to inflict enough damage to Sri Lankan Economy which will bring even the hard core racist to their knees.
Sri Lanka has seen prosperity from Credit Card issued by China which now stands at 630 Billion Dollars and even the die heats wouldn’t want to throw it away. The writing is on the wall for MR make no mistake and he has now become a liability.

Turning to your point about the ” MISSED OPPORTUNITY” let me give you my take on this.

1)LTTE were self made Freedom Fighters with little help from outside and you may call them ruthless. Fighting for Freedom from Tyranny is not easy especially when you also have to contain “Ettapans” from within. I will readily admit that Prabaharan made many mistakes and the monumental error was to kill Rajiv Gandhi.
      2) But in defence of Prabaharan I would say this and it was due to ” Contributory Negligence”. IPKF came to Sri Lanka to protect Tamils but they simply replaced Sri Lankan Soldiers and carried on the killing. Rajiv dug his own Grave by trying to impose his will on the people instead of listening. I know the atrocities committed by IPKF and I have many clients who have lost dear ones at the hands of IPKF.
But that is all water under the Bridge. Despite all their mistakes I am not prepared to attack LTTE for what they fought for and there were thousands of our boys who sacrificed their lives and don’t forget it was Prabaran who put Eelam on the World map and his message will be around for a very long time ( as it was made clear when Ananthi a Tigress polled the second highest votes) until we reach Parity with the Majority and have the means at our disposal to decide our own destiny preferably within a United Sri Lanka.
      I live in hope.

` from an illiterate with foot and mouth disease`

No wonder you de-mons wash toilets in malaysia and have homes without toilets.

You picked up Bacca Loco from your 9 month birth at manchester.

Go jump in the cess pit and tell others that you are a research scholar when all you studied was law to be the outlaw- mercenary.- like kutti mani the smuggler.

You want more hole in one sloth velu pakkam.
Genius has limits but you have none and just like to hang about railway stations and hold placards at the boat club.
school teachers son and station masters son- you need 3 more generations to be where we are.

You are right mate your sisters go to these so Muslim Countries to work as maids for the Arabs wash their Toilets and get treated like dirt. It looks like your sisters come back and tell you all about washing Toilets and I am sure they must be smelling. Even your fellow brothers dont respect you and they use you as Mercinaries for nothing.
On the subject what languge are you writing in.
Certainly not Tamil, Sinkalam or even English. When you Jihadist went to fight for IS it looks like you have learned a little bit of Arabic. From the way you are writing one gets the impression that Arabic is a primitive Language. You borrowed our language and speak a little bit of Sinkalam and what have you got man which you can claim your own. Frankly nothing.

      Dr Nirmalan,

“several opportunities were made available to the Tamil leadership to negotiate honorable peace. In particular Premadasa, Chandrika and finally Ranil offered several opportunities for ‘Honorable peace and true equality’ within a united country. “

Could you please tell us more about this – point to articles or books?

All PMs and presidents, with regards to Tamils, had the same mentality – Mahavamsa mentality. The current president is the worst.

“I will any day defend the rights of a minority group to fight back to defend its rights in the face of blatant injustice”

Adamban kodiyum thirandal Miduku. Please join other groups (not EPDP, Karuna, …..)who are fighting for Tamil rights.
