Mr. President, Its Outright Racism

By Hilmy Ahamed

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decade long era of governance saw unprecedented racism and hate against the minority communities in Sri Lanka. The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and other Buddhist extremist groups were blamed for this bigotry. It is a well-known fact that the regime change in January 2015 was mainly due to the minority communities voting en-block against the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime, which brought in the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena to the executive Presidency. This inconceivable feat would go down in Sri Lankan history as a silent revolution that sent a war-winning popular President out of office. He had the mass backing of the majority Buddhist community, but lost the approval of the minorities because of his tacit support and impunity that his administration offered the BBS and other extremist Buddhist groups to intimidate and attack the Muslim and evangelical Christian communities. While blaming the BBS for his defeat, the ex-President has now started talking in conciliatory terms to the minorities in his ‘come-back’ attempt. Now President Sirisena’s Secretary’s call for explanation on the introduction of Sharia Banking based on a complaint by the Bodu Bala Sena smells of the continuation of an extreme racist agenda that could reignite ethnic tensions.

The Bodu Bala Sena failed miserably in their electoral foray when they contested the 2016 General Elections as the Buddhist People’s Front (Bodu Jana Peramuna) in 16 electoral districts. They received a mere 20,377 island wide votes, when eleven million six hundred and eighty four thousand and ninety eight (11,684,098) Sri Lankans voted during the August 2016 elections. This is simple evidence that the absolute majority of Sinhala Buddhists are not racist. A disgraceful electoral performance by any count for a party that claimed that it could topple governments.

Maithri RanilMedia reports indicate that President Sirisena’s Additional Secretary, S. T. Kodikara, in a letter addressed to the Secretary to the Ministry of National Policy and Economic Affairs M. I. M. Rafeek has called for an explanation within two weeks on whether Sharia banking practice is being introduced to the country by following the respective laws and regulations of Sri Lanka. Incidentally, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe holds the National Policy and Economic Affairs portfolio. This comes amongst rumors that the cash starved Maithri-Ranil government would have a billion dollars in investment from Saudi Arabia. The Saudis will not invest if it is not Sharia compliant.

Sharia banking has been in practice in many countries over the last several decades. It is no different to any banking services offered to its customers with Basic Checking Accounts, Savings Accounts, Interest Bearing Checking Accounts, Money Market Accounts, CDs, IRAs (investment retirement accounts), and Brokerage Accounts. It should be viewed as a banking product just as any of the above. Many well-established local banks have opened up Sharia banking units to support the banking needs of their Muslim clientele. The Muslims are forbidden from taking interest payments on deposits, as per their religion. Sharia banking provides opportunities for investments that a person could make through an agreement that does not earn a fixed return. The possibility of earning larger profits or even losing on the investment is part of the agreement, hence it could be seen as a pure commercial investment. The Muslims’ practice of Islam and its commandments do not interfere with the interests of others, hence there is no need to restrict their freedom and their religious obligations.

So, why is the Bodu Bala Sena excited or concerned about all this? It should be the choice of an individual to invest his savings, wisely or otherwise. That should not be anybody’s concern, especially on racially motivated excuses. The President should act as the executive of all Sri Lankans, not just for the Sinhala Buddhists. The freedom to choose how an individual invests his savings should not be dictated by the Executive.

Islamic banking is an activity that is consistent with the principles of Islamic law as prescribed for Muslims. Its practical application could be viewed as the development of Islamic economics within the context of Islamic jurisprudence. As such, a more correct term for Islamic banking is sharia compliant finance. Hence broadly speaking an Islamic bank is an institution that mobilizes the financial resources and invests them in an attempt to achieve predetermined Islamically acceptable social and financial objectives. Both mobilization and investment of funds should be conducted in accordance with principles of Islamic law. The charging or acceptance of interest is strictly forbidden in Islam. The perception is that when investors are more interested in the rates of interest and guaranteed returns than the uses to which the money is put, the results could only be negative.

The Bodu Bala Sena, a couple of years ago went on the rampage on Halal, an Islamic requirement to ensure food that is consumed by Muslims is permissible to them. In a country with a Muslim population of just around 9.4%, hundreds of thousands of animals (Chicken, Goats, Cows, Pigs etc..) are killed and consumed by Sri Lankans. Obviously, Muslims do not consume all of them. While pig meat or any pork product is Haram (forbidden) for Muslims, they could consume any other if they are slaughtered in the halal way.

Halal is often used in reference to food that is permissible for Muslims to eat or drink, the criteria specify what food is allowed for consumption, and how the food is prepared. The most common example of non-halal (or haraam) food is pork. Muslims are expected to follow specific rules in their slaughter of animals for their consumption. The criteria for non-pork items also include their source, the cause of the animal’s death, and how it was processed. Other food that is not halal for Muslims to consume include blood of animals, which is achieved in the halal method of slaughter; the blood is drained out without the animal feeling it. The consumption of actual blood is in fact forbidden in both Jewish and Christian Holy Scriptures too.

The incumbent Government of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken great strides in facilitating a reconciliation process amongst all communities after a 30 year ethnic conflict that caused the death of hundreds of thousands, maimed thousands and destroyed the economic well being of a large population and the Government. The international community that was on a confrontational approach with the Rajapaksa regime has begun to reconcile with Sri Lanka. The Bodu Bala Sena, that was instrumental in the Aluthgama pogrom against the Muslims have, to date got away scot-free. The Islamic countries that count for the majority of our expatriate labour that brings in over $ 7 billion have remained silent against the racism towards the Muslims. The tea industry’s biggest clientele is in the Middle East. The Muslim community has remained calm and patriotic amidst the excesses of the extremists’ onslaught. They have not made representations to the International community or to their brethren in the Middle East. The government of Sri Lanka needs to safeguard the interests, cultural and religious practices of the Muslims that do not contravene with the constitution or the laws of the country. Failure to do so would be an injustice to a community that has stood by the Sri Lankan State throughout history, contributing to the economy and prosperity of all Sri Lankans. Let us unite in defending the rights of every citizen in this nation of ours and not be misled by the racist agenda of a few.

Spoken like a true ignoramus. Sharia Banking is no different to any other banking except that the customers cannot earn any interest on their investments. How this has anything to do with race is only in the mindset of bigots. Having said that, if the Saudi Arabian investment as recorded, is dependent upon us allowing Sharia Banking, it is then a slippery slope and should not be encouraged. It is like paying ransom money to a kidnapper. It only encourages more kidnapping.

The system is Islamic , interest free but not
restricted only to Muslims .Great Britain has
Islamic Banks on its soil . And Saudis , if
interested , will only step in on invitation.
Is it under Buddhist or Sinhalese banking
laws that we have banks operating in our country ?
It is just about the country is opening up for
foreign investments and not for racism . You can’t
just say ” come on in to China and no to others
simply because of some best known racists. Don’t
forget that Saudis contribute to the IMF too in
addition to their own products .Also remember that
beggars don’t choose however higher you jumped .
It is we who stand to benefit more than Saudis.

Sharia banking is said to be better in several aspects, but it will empower the Muslims.
After destroying their own once great economy, the Sinhala merchants and the Southern pioneers, they are now in this state.

“Sharia banking is said to be better in several aspects, but it will empower the Muslims. “

Sharia banking is kind of risk and profit sharing, and the “borrower” and “lender” are “partners”

It is more balanced than in capitalist banking, where the lender and the borrower are adversaries. The lender tried to get the maximum “rent” or “Interest” and nor lose the capital, whereas the borrower trues to pay the least amount of “rent” or “interest” and sometimes not pay the capital back, and declare bankruptcy.

Islamic Banking is well recognized in western economies. It is a financial model well accepted as economic solution to address many financial crises. even in 2008 world recession it was considered by most of world big economies. Any body before opposing Islamic finance I urge them to go and read internet publications for their understanding BBS is opposing because of nothing but its Islamic name called sharia. The correct term is Islamic banking. MY3 should understand what is good for the country n its future. If MY3 listen to extremist tune then no difference with MARA regime.

While the F…king BBS will protect us, if the arabs send our slaves home, you will be eating off dusbins. We should thank the Sri Lankan Muslims for not going against the country. Racists like you will push them to do what the Tamils did and you should know what it has done to the country. We get all the inward remittences from the work we do for the Muslim countries. So, as long as we have to beg for our survival, you just shut up

      Balla

Major two religions in the world are Christianity and Islam. Traditional banking system was developed in Britain under Christianity principles. Sharia banking is the fastest growing in the world. Any country cannot isolate from this trend unless it wants to lose out a new emerging economic order. USA, Britain and many other countries have adopted to the new trend. It will not harm balla or any body.

You are either stupid or cant know what Racism means.

Just what you have been adding here racial remarks. We are all srilankens – anyone born to lanken soils should have the same right. I have not lived in the country for the last 30 years, but I respect any of us lankens as equal ones. What I meant above is nothing else, at least now – let alone today, we should collectively work on sustainable peace. That can only be achieved, if your hatred against Muslims, Hindus or Burghers are no longer there. You surely dont have unique kind of blood. We are all human beings. If Angela Merkel or any other good leaders in Europe, would support your views, how many poor poeple would have gone dead not being able to bear the coldness being left from their original places. There are all kind of extremists in every religion – so why to attack lanken Muslims as a whole. There you the like ILK will have to pay a large price if not today, but tomorrow. I hate the kind of mind sets. I respect MY3 and RW for their great work done sofar – being done in terms of restoring peace though slow move.

Majority of Buddhists , Muslims , Hindus and Christians
of our country are stinking racists depending on each
other for survival. But My3 and Ranil are genuinely
trying to do everything they can to deal with racism
by promoting economic growth , a tough challenge with
hostile and lost rogues openly working day and night to
jeopardise all such efforts. Real racists then and now
are Rajapaksas and they never shy about it .They raised
racism to such hights that they can not shy away from
it .My3 + Ranil combo is a historic opportunity not to
      miss out .

Mr. Maithripala. You have forgotten to show gratitude to the people who made you president. Now, you are the same as Mahinda Rajapaksa. You are trying to sleep with the racists. You cannot say I have to listen to all. Bodu Bala Sena even scolded the judges in court. They have always said that your government is something that was robbed from Mahinda. So, show your thanks to muslims by not creating problems for them, otherwise you too will have to go home soon

      Fazeel,

you are absolutely wrong. Either you live somewhere else or not able sense it yet.

In a nation almost every 2nd is corrupted and highly abusive – how can a president only go for it ? He has to be with those racists like or not – this is common to RW too. They cant see it beyond their nose, for some various reasons – that is why the ethnic issue and any other alarming issues of the country move forward but so slowly. Be frank to you man, today, we enjoy a lot of freedom in the coutry unlike the case under Mr Abusive (Rajapakshe) neverthless, they are over 40 lacks stay blind being alert to Rajapkshe or the like men. That is natural in this country. Remember your muslim representive ministers behaved in the parlimaent during the days of Rajakashe ? What happened to that old man who went on licking Rajas then ? I think no sinhala ministers went that farto please Rajaano.

An ethical economic system (Islamic Shariah) will supersede all man-make system of finance and governance.

Current estimates of the size of the global Islamic finance industry range from AED 6.1 trillion to AED 7.7 trillion. Recent announcements from Saudi Aramco may be about to give these numbers a supersised boost with a potential valuation and part IPO of up to AED 37 trillion. The past five years have been most significant, recording 17.3% Compounded Annual Growth Rate.

Our President is a wise and understanding man. He will never do anything to disturb the status-quo. He has only requested for clarification to update his own understanding of the issues at hand, and to please the BBS of action been taken. Surely, he has not called for the scrapping of Sharia Banking in the country? The laws to accommodate Sharia and Quazi Courts system have been passed in Parliament many moons ago, and it ain’t something new. The Prez knows this very well. He will never antagonize Saudi Arabia since they carry and share a major burden of our country’s employment problem. Muslims from SL travel every year on Hadj to SA. There is so much interaction and closeness between our two countries. For them to be willing to give us a billion Dollars on short notice is a very positive development, and that too without the burden of interest factor. This is bound to ease our credit squeeze and make it so much easy to start reviving the economy. We need to stay calm and watch the circus as it rolls through town.

Exacly Ajith ! At the end it will be found that Sharia
phobia is just baseless . Germany , France and UK all
have Islamic Banks , not only Saudi Banks ,
Turkis-Kuwait Banks also popular to offer Shari Banking.
These Banks don’t accept just any money . They refuse
money from gambling , pornography ,Alcohol and so on .
Bad money neither allowed in nor out ! It is ethical
Banking . Does BBS know any ethics ? What they believe
is, anything Muslim and Islamic must be rejected without
second thought, simply because they hate them . So it is
clean racism whatever they try to display to the
contrary.UK has five fully fledged Islamic Banks and 20
Banks that offer Islamic Banking services . The advanced
world is doing everything it can to make life easier for
all its citizens while some evil forces in Srilanka is
trying to do its best to pull it into darkness .Tim
Sinclaire , the head of marketing of Al Rayan Bank is
reported to have said that over the last two years 83%
customers making fixed-term deposits were non-Muslims
in the UK. Our govt is not blindly following a financial

times of difficulty . Just ignore the branded RACISTS.

    1.Thanks for explaining Sharia banking.
2.It isn’t 30-yr conflict but 67-yr conflict – many seem to inadvertently say conflict instead of war. Conflict started with the Citizenship Act of 1948/9.
3.t is very sad that the President is not doing what he thinks is right:
Ethnic minorities should press the President to press on with the change of ”mindset of the South” – it shouldn’t be seen only as a statement( or rebuff?) last week to head of IFRC: ”whenever the people talk of reconciliation, international agencies rush to former conflict areas in the North and East seeking reconciliation among the people. it is people in the North and East who suffered most due to the protracted conflict and reconciliation should originate from the people in the South and it should be inculcated in their mindset”

Almost all the comments above smack of racism.

Isalmic Banking in SL operates under the Banking Act and its amendments. No doubt there. The Central bank does not allow any institution to operate a banking business unless licensed by the Central bank and operating within the Act.

Islamic Banking is open to all and not just to muslims. So there is no point arguing on racism.

    Hilmi Ahamed !!!

    Barbaric killing
You say Muslims are banned from consuming meat if there is blood there. So, according to you, blood is drained from the animal before it is killed. You further say you people do it in a way a that the animal does not feel pain.
Are you not ashed to be a Muslim? Is’t it cruelty to animals?
By your way of killing to make halal meat the animal suffers hours before it dies. It is nothing but torture.Perhaps not practised even by barbarians.
In this century people accept that animals have rights
Sri Lanka must immediately ban killing of animals by draining their blood
Mr. Ahmed Do you prefer being killed by draining your blood rather than being killed at once by ISIS in case you were in Iraq or Syria?

This is what Hilmy wrote, not that crap what you are crying over:

‘Other food that is not halal for Muslims to consume include blood of animals, which is achieved in the halal method of slaughter; the blood is drained out without the animal feeling it. The consumption of actual blood is in fact forbidden in both Jewish and Christian Holy Scriptures too’.

Now what is the crap you write:

‘So, according to you, blood is drained from the animal before it is killed.’

See the difference? No wonder the cruelty factor gets blown out of proportion, whilst you go on and on at a tangent attacking him for something he did not write. At least verify before you publicize something that does not sound correct, thus saving you the ignominy of making a fool of yourself.

I won’t get into the nitty gritty of the animal dying without pain, since you can verify this by doing your own research from any website that deals with the subject. It may be too gruesome to read and you may become unable to withstand it.

Draining of blood from animals to be killed for consumption had been a middle east custom and not confined to Muslims only. It is still practiced by Jews and was practiced by ancient Christians.

If you analyse scientifically, you will know the reason for doing that. Putrefaction in a dead body starts from the blood. Also putrefaction is faster in a hot climate than in cold climate.

People in desert countries correctly believed that if you let the blood out, the meat will remain fresh for much longer period in those hot environment. It has nothing to do with any religion.

The world has changed and there is refrigeration facilities to keep meat from being putrified for long periods. Also, however much you try to let blood out, you cannot completely empty it.

I have seen cattle being slaughtered in a Muslim country. As the blood drains off, animal gasps for breath due to lack of oxygen and it takes a long time for it to die, which is indeed cruel.

Punchisinho, there is no such thing as draining the blood before slaughter. The Islamic way of slaughtering is that the main artery that links the brain is severed, hence there is no communication with the brain, so the animal does not feel the pain. When this artery is cut, all the blood in the animal is pumped out.

Isn’t cutting the main artery to the brain a cruel and barbaric practice?Isn’t it painful when an artery is severed?
Kill an animal at once if you do want to eat an innocent animal that did nothing to harm you.
The writer himself says that blood is drained out of the animal
This barbaric way of killing must be banned at once.

        Uvais Hassen,
You have displayed your gross ignorance, perhaps your religious frenzy is clouding your rational thinking. The main artery that you are talking about is Carotid artery on both sides of the neck.

The blood supply to the brain from the heart takes two different routes : Anterior circulation through carotids and Posterior circulation through Vertebro-basilar arteries. In the base of the brain there is interconnection between the two systems through Circle of Willis, with overlapping of blood supply.

So even if both carotids are cut off, blood still reaches the brain, though in lesser amounts through posterior circulation. Vital centres in the brain stem are supplied by the posterior circulation which keeps life going. Severing of carotids will result in loss of consciousness initially and not to loss of sensation to pain, which takes place later.

When you sever the artery, you only cut off blood supply, but not the nervous system which is connected through spinal cord. It is only when sufficient blood is lost, nervous system is paralysed.

When carotid artery is cut, all the blood is not pumped out. There are six litres of blood in the body. For the blood to be pumped out, the heart should be functioning. It is only when about three litres of blood is lost, due to hypovolaemia, heart stops. If heart stops, blood loss stops. However the slaughterer tries, he cannot pump all the blood out.

Your statement to defend this Islamic practice is incorrect. Please do not come out with such foolish explanation, and accept that slaughtering of animals by whichever method is cruel.

          Dear Dr Gnana

Thought this might help you understand better the Halal method of slaughtering.

Killing and Religious Slaughter of Animals for Food – Continues to be a controversial Issue
          DR. A. R. MOHAMED
BVSc Hon (Sri Lanka) PhD (London)

FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE & ANIMAL SCIENCES,
          UNIVERSITY OF PERADENIYA.

Different types of methods have been practised to slaughter animals by people all over the world from time immemorial for food, skin and other body tissues and for the performance of ritual acts. However, modern intensive farming and commercial production of meat, has brought about a re-thinking and development of innovative methods of slaughter which in today’s world is called ‘humane slaughter’. Various laws have been introduced in different countries to satisfy the commercial needs of the meat producers, respect and protect the religious freedoms of different communities, and also to prevent cruelty to animals. However, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, with the formation of Animal Rights Activist groups, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Vegetarian Associations, Friends of Animals, Friends of Cart-bulls, Vegetarian International, Voice of Animals and similar associations; various views ranging from total ban on slaughter of animals to adopt more humane methods of slaughter have been voiced.

However, in Sri Lanka some have been expressing more extreme views with ulterior motives to target at the Muslim community without any respect for their religious freedom or to the rules laid down by the Holy Quran and Islamic laws as regards slaying of animals for food. Moreover, many writers to local newspapers seem not to have a deeper knowledge on the different methods used for animal slaughter; the unsatisfactory facilities provided by the local authorities for butchers to slaughter animals with minimal pain and cruelty, or knowing the value of meat and animal products on the health and nutritional needs for the survival of mankind.

Many views expressed in the mass media have prompted the authorities to prepare new laws to prevent cruelty to animals. The Law Commission of Sri Lanka has called for proposals from the public and has now prepared the draft of a New Animal Welfare Act and for which the Commission had also obtained the services of a Sri Lankan born ‘legal consultant’ who is apparently a vegetarian and a resident of Australia. This so called consultant in the Sunday Observer of 2nd April 2000 openly condemned the Islamic ritual slaughter (Dhabh or Halal method) and also mentioned that in countries like Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria, the religious slaughter of animals is prohibited. However, he did not mention intentionally or otherwise, the more popular non Muslim countries like USA, UK, European Union, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or India, where the ritual slaughter both by the Muslim’s Halal method (and the Jewish Shechita method) is permitted; where no stunning of animals are carried-out prior to slaughter. In fact, in USA the ritual slaughter is exempt from Humane Methods of Slaughter Act of 1978 in order to protect and cherish the religious freedoms of the different communities.
This so called consultant also mentioned that “any ban on the religious slaughter of animals in Sri Lanka can be expected to generate resentment among some sections of the local Muslim community. On the other hand, to allow religious slaughter to continue (where in a private home, an embassy or in a slaughter house) or even legalise it through a statutory enactment, as reported in the newspapers would be seen as nothing more than a blatant and cynical example of the sacrificing of the interest of innocent animals for the votes of a religious minority. The Sri Lankan government risks being accused, both within and outside the country of trading moral integrity for political expediency.” A person appointed as a consultant to prepare the Animal Welfare Legislation should not have written such articles in a controversial manner and stir the feelings of the non Muslims to support his views and at the same time antagonise the Muslim community. Unfortunately it appears that the government has obtained the services of a biased person who seems to be incapable of fulfilling his duties in a professional and an impartial manner and also ignorant of the local situations.
For a sensible impartially thinking person, a pertinent question that crosses the mind is to ask “has the Law Commission of Sri Lanka has obtained the services of a biased person to prepare the Animal Welfare Act and to create an unwanted political issue to de-stabilise the harmonious living of the Muslim community. Article 14(1) (e) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka clearly mentions that “Every citizen is entitled to the freedom, either by himself or in association with others and either in public or in private, to manifest his religion or belief in worship, observance, practice and teaching”. Besides this freedom enshrined in the Constitution, the right to interpret one’s own religious beliefs and to practice accordingly is a fundamental and an inviolable one. Hence an individual, another community or the State should not try to change or be allowed to change the accepted practices and traditions of the Muslims (or any other community) or allowed to interpret, undermine the autonomy or interfere with their faith. Thus the Halal slaughter method which the Muslims have been practicing for over 1400 years should be allowed and the State should not try to enforce legislations on how its citizens should interpret their faiths. The State should not get involved in any denial of the religious freedom but should be willing to accommodate and tolerate the different religious beliefs as long as these do not cause any harm to the other communities.
The “humane methods” of slaughter using a captive bolt gun, electric stunning, carbon dioxide gas etc. for stunning are mainly practised in large abattoirs in foreign countries especially to facilitate their speed of commercial meat production although they tend to claim that their methods are more humane; which are not strictly true. In Sri Lanka we do not have such large meat packing plants and only a few animals are slaughtered each day in small slaughter houses scattered all over the country or in the backyard by the small-scale poultry farmers.

          KILLING FOR SURVIVAL
Unlike humans, most macroscopic and microscopic animal species have faster growth and reproductive rates to produce a larger number of off-springs during their life time, which if allowed to survive and propagate unchecked would finally lead to a quick extinction of mankind. So whatever religion one belongs to, he has to kill a large number of living creatures for his own survival. Starting from the day a baby is born numerous vaccines are given to the young child in order that he develops immunity to kill the invading micro-organisms to his body. Various types of anti-worm treatments are given during childhood to kill the thousands or millions of worms that develop in the digestive tract. From birth to death man is treated with many types of drugs to kill the different disease causing organisms that invade his body tissues and also various insecticides are also used to kill the biting insects.
In our day-to-day life, an unestimatable number of smaller species are accidentally killed by trampling while walking, or at work-places, or intentionally killed by spraying insecticides on plants and animals. All types of living creatures are daily killed for preparation of vaccines and extraction of medical products, leather goods etc. and also to feed the zoo, pet and other captive animals for man’s pleasure. Besides this, daily a large number of potentially dangerous animals to human beings are also killed.
All creatures big, small or microscopic, posses “Life” and for man’s survival whether he likes it or not he has to continue to kill. However, man is either ignorant or behaves like a hypocrite and tend to object when it comes to killing of animals for food, or even for killing of only certain animal species like cattle and not others like fish, chicken, pigs etc., or species that are harmful for humans. Whether the life of a bull, chicken, fish, insect or a worm is destroyed, it is killing. Hence it is apparent, that nobody can live on this earth without destroying some forms of life, during his life-time. But unfortunately severe criticisms are levelled especially at slaughter of food animals.

          KILLING OF FOOD ANIMALS
Animals like cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and fish are killed in millions annually as a source of food for humans and also for other zoo and pet animals. However, for the public to make a correct judgement of what method of slaughter should be applied in Sri Lanka it is very important to understand the different methods used, their effect on the animals, the economic feasibility and practicality, as well as the needs of the different religious groups. Various methods such as sticking (cutting the neck), stabbing, shooting, gassing, stunning using electricity or captive bolt guns (to cause concussion of brain), giving violent blows on the head with blunt instruments, using nets to catch fish (killed by suffocation) and immersion of the heads of poultry in electrified salt-water baths in commercial broiler meat productions are employed in the process of killing of food animals. However, the critics in Sri Lanka have been particularly targeting their attacks on Muslims and their method of ritual slaughter, where an animal’s neck is cut without any pre-slaughter stunning or making the animal unconscious. This they tend to portray as a cruel, painful and a barbaric method of slaughter due to their ignorance and the poor facilities provided by the local authorities.

Today even the so-called strict vegetarians consume animal products either knowingly or unknowingly. Gelatine is 100 % animal origin and is used in the making of chocolates, toffees, yoghurt, ice-cream and in many sweet-dishes and also in the preparation of capsules to hold drugs , vitamins minerals etc.(e.g. ampicillin, tetracycline, cloxacillin, fish oil, vitamin capsules). Also milk and milk products, eggs and egg-products are widely used in many commercially prepared foods; animal skin on clothing and footwear, animal blood and various tissues in the making of vaccines, antiserum (blood serum containing antibodies) for prevention and cure of infectious diseases; animal products are used in traditional medicines (for humans and animals), preparation of cosmetic items, for traditional and ritual ceremonies etc., This means humans are increasingly dependent on animal products for their survival and well-being.

          KILLING METHODS
Common food animals such as livestock, poultry, and fish are killed in numerous ways. Large-scale commercial slaughtering of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs in many countries are performed by stunning (rendering an animal unconscious) and followed by sticking (cutting the neck or stabbing for the animal to bleed) which in today’s world is called ‘humane slaughter’. The other method is the direct sticking (without stunning) which is called the ritual slaughter and include the Dhabh or Halal method practised by Muslims and the Shechita method by Jews. Of the over 7.3 billion world population, 23 % (1.7 billion) are Muslims and all Muslims consume meat and meat products of Halal origin where the animals are slaughtered according to the guidelines given in the Holy Quran and Shariah (Islamic laws).

Although for centuries the traditional direct sticking method has been the most common practice of killing livestock and poultry for food; with the development of large-scale livestock farming and establishment of highly automated and capital intensive commercial meat plants, the requirement for rapid killing of animals has been a prime need. However, the ritual method of slaughter which involves restraining of individual animals and cutting the neck of the conscious animal is considered as a cumbersome and a time consuming process to practice in large abattoirs. Hence, stunning of animals prior to slaughter (i.e. to induce unconsciousness) in order to maximise the speed of killing was of prime concern in these slaughter-houses e.g. killing of over 350 pigs per hour is achieved in some slaughter houses after stunning. To justify these economic considerations, the various methods used for stunning in commercial meat production, the words ‘humane slaughter’ was apparently coined to cover-up the initial cruel treatment of stunning. The following brief description of the methods used for stunning would explain the above:
Cattle are slaughtered after electrical stunning or after stunning with a captive bolt gun. Electrical stunning involves passing a large and a controlled voltage across the brain by placing electrodes on both sides of the animal’s head. Unfortunately many societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals, butchers and most people who eat meat assume that passing an electric current across the brain causes instantaneous unconsciousness and the animals feel no pain. However, scientists and physiologists have expressed serious doubts about it. According to Dr. Harold Hillman, Director of the Unity Laboratory of Applied Neurobiology and former Reader in Physiology at the University of Surrey there is evidence that this assumption may not be justified. Most of us know that when we receive a small electric shock accidentally while trying to switch on a defective electrical appliance or an electric switch, we feel it terrible and also tend to scream. So when a powerful current is passed through an animal’s body, no doubt it will feel the miserable shock and pain although the time factor may be short or the animal may be paralysed (but conscious) and thus unable to exhibit the external manifestations of this pain.
Electric current is widely used to torture people in some countries and victims of torture have attested that larger the voltage or current, the more painful it is and that they do not undergo unconscious immediately. The power used to torture people is of the same order as that used to stun animals. Even greater current used on the electric chair kills the victim after a few minutes. Massive burns and charring are seen at the sites where the electrodes are attached when a human being is killed in the electric chair. Patients who are given electric shock treatment for manic depression are anaesthetised because those who have recovered complain of pain. Perhaps the most obvious evidence is that it is painful to touch the electric mains. Then why is that it is so widely believed that electric stunning is painless and “humane’. It is mainly because that animals and humans subjected to large voltages are probably paralysed and cannot exhibit the obvious sign of pain such as vocalisation, facial expressions and violent movements and hence people believe that electric stunning causes instantaneous unconsciousness, which is not true. On the other-hand, no one wants to think that every-time when he eats a piece of cooked meat, a meat-sandwich, a Christmas turkey or while wearing a leather jacket that the animal would have suffered a severe pain. Thus stunning is apparently only a commercial cover-up of pain.

Modern day electrical stunning of cattle requires a two phase stun due to its large size. First a current of about 2.5 amps is applied across the head to cause an immediate epileptiform activity and to subsequently render the animal insensible. And a second current is applied from head to body to induce cardiac arrest. The electrodes should remain in firm contact with the animal’s head for the duration of the stun and for which the animal’s head must be retained in a mechanical devise and be stunned within 5 seconds after the head is restrained to minimise stress. In some plants a head only stunning method is used and when this reversible stunning technique is applied, the animal must be bled promptly to prevent return to sensibility.
Another method of stunning is the use of a captive bolt gun which has a steel bolt that is powered either by a blank cartridge or air under pressure. The bolt is driven through the animal’s forehead to cause a concussion (a brain injury) and an irreversible damage to the brain and to induce subsequent insensibility. After the animal is shot, the bolt retracts and is reset for the next animal. This has the same effect on the animal as being shot with a live bullet using a firearm. Besides this, heavy mature bulls are difficult to stun correctly with a captive bolt gun. Another type, the pneumatic stunners which inject air into the brain can force brain and spinal tissues into the heart and other parts of the body and due to concern about the ‘mad-cow disease’ or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, they are not recommended as there is a possibility of people getting new variants of Creutzfeldt Jacob disease from cattle, which is a fatal disease of the brain. Apart from this, failure to render the animal insensible with one shot from the captive bolt is also higher due to its bulkiness and difficulty in achieving correct placement of the stunner on the animal’s forehead, and also to get the maximum hitting power due to poor maintenance of the gun. It is also reported that in the Bos indicus cattle (local cattle found in Sri Lanka and in the Indian sub-continent), the presence of a bony ridge in the forehead also makes captive-bolt stunning more difficult.

The two most commonly used methods for commercial stunning of pigs prior to slaughter are electrical stunning and the use of carbon dioxide anaesthetisation (exposure to 83 % carbon dioxide and air for not less than 45 seconds in a compact carbon dioxide stunning unit) to induce functional changes in the animal’s brain so as to cause insensitivity before slaughter. Carbon dioxide anaesthetisation results in the lowering of blood pH (i.e. increase the acidity) leading to loss of consciousness and the bleeding of the-animal must commence within 30 seconds, which under slaughter-house conditions is really difficult or impossible to practice. This is actually ‘chemical strangulation’.

Electrical stunning in pigs induces tonic/clonic epileptic fit (an epileptiform activity in the brain) leading to unconsciousness. Electrical stunning has also been reported to have negative effects in the form of carcass damage (fracture of bones, blood splash in meat, bloody intestines etc.) and negative effects on meat quality (decreased tenderness and paler colour of muscles, detrimental effect on taste, and quick putrefaction due to excess blood in meat). But the method is preferred as it is the most economic form of stunning. Both the use of electrical and carbon dioxide stunning before slaughter have been shown to cause serious physical stress in pigs.

In the case of killing of chickens, they are lifted by their legs when they are fully conscious and high speed killing in assembly lines occur daily by dragging the birds and immersing their heads in electrified salt-water baths where a combination of drowning and electrocution is practised. Some birds are found to flutter and not stunned and also causes fear. Various other methods like strangulation, suffocation, crushing the neck, inserting the birds head and neck through open-ended cones fixed to walls and chopping-off the heads etc. are also practised in killing poultry. However, as chicken is a small animal, the societies which voice about cruelty to animals are apparently silent.

In Britain around 650,000 tons of fish are killed each year for food. However, although the methods used for killing of fish are cruel, they have received very little attention, world-wide; although there is no reason to believe that fish do not feel the pain or suffer the stress while struggling in the nets. Fish caught at sea, river or by anglers die of asphyxia when they are taken out of water. When they are caught in nets, they struggle and may be exhausted by trying to free themselves. Live fish is dumped into cold rooms as they are caught in the sea. Some fish are gutted while the hearts are still beating. Anglers sometimes throw the small fish back into the water after withdrawing the hook and the fish may then die of inability to eat and also due to subsequent microbial infections due to the injury caused by the hook.

          HALAL SLAUGHTER
Of the world population of 7.3 billion people, about 1.7 billion (23 %) are Muslims and to whom are permitted to eat only meat and meat products obtained only from animals that are slaughtered strictly according to the guidelines laid by the Holy Quran and the Shariah (Islamic laws). The Quran (5:3) says “Forbidden to you for food are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which had been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which has been (partly) eaten by a wild animal unless you are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); forbidden is also the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety”.

Thus, the Quran prohibits any method that uses a violent blow to kill animals for food. According to eminent Islamic scholars, the present day stunning techniques using a captive bolt gun to cause rapid concussion of the brain or passing a powerful current through the head (and body) to cause a sudden knock-out of the animal is also a violent blow. Thus, meat obtained by using such methods cannot be considered as permitted in Islam. This is the reason why Muslims object to the modern day “humane methods of slaughter” which uses such techniques. The ritual slaughter technique practised by the Muslims is known as the ‘Dhabh’ or ‘Halal’ method. This is an exact and a clearly defined method for slaying animals for food that are fit for human consumption. The animals are not stunned either by concussion of the brain or by an electric current. The word ‘Dhabh’ in Arabic means purification or rendering something good or wholesome. In UK alone, of the approximately 32 million sheep and 7 million cattle slaughtered per year, 12 million sheep and 3 million cattle are slaughtered according to the ritual slaughter methods of Muslims (Dhabh) and Jews (Shechita).

To meet the requirements of the Halal or Dhabh method as per Quran and the Shariah, the following conditions should be satisfied:
          1. The person who performs the Dhabh act must be a sane Muslim (male or female).
          2. The knife used to perform Dhabh must be long, straight and razor sharp (an 18 inches long knife is suitable for cattle) to facilitate quick cutting of the skin, windpipe (trachea), gullet (oesophagus), and especially the blood vessels (the two jugular veins and the two carotid arteries) so that the blood will quickly and efficiently flow out. The cut in the neck should be made closer to the throat and it is advisable to tilt the head backwards while cutting. This is to prevent the cut edges of the vessels touching each other and prevent the flow of blood back to the brain and also to enhance the bleeding process through the cut ends of the vessels. If the cut edges of the vessels touch each other, there will be a reduction of the bleeding process and cattle and sheep will struggle violently during the cut. The massive haemorrhage that occurs during the Halal slaughter enhances unconsciousness and shortens the time of death and suffering of the animal.
          3. The spinal cord must not be cut and thus the neck is not severed completely from the head. Keeping the nervous system intact will induce convulsions (muscle contractions) and help to throw-out more blood from the body as explained later.
          4. The name of Allah (Bismillah) should be pronounced before the neck is cut. According to the Quran, all life (animals as well as human beings) belongs to Allah. The Quran (6:38) says: “there is no beast that walks on earth and no bird that flies on its two wings which is not Allah’s creatures like yourselves”.
Besides the above, the following ‘Sunnat acts’ are also to be followed during slaughter of animals for food:
          a) The animal should be healthy and brought to the place of slaughter gently without subjecting to any form of cruelty such as dragging, whipping, tail -twisting etc.
          b) Lay the animal down on its side as gently as possible and direct the neck of the animal towards the Qiblah. The person who intends slaughtering should also face himself and the knife towards the Qiblah while performing the act of Dhabh.
          The following should be avoided:
          a) The knife should not be sharpened while the animal has been put down for slaughter or in its presence.
          b) Slaughtering an animal in the presence of other animals.
          c) Slaughtering in a dark place.
          d) Skinning or removing the head before the animal’s life is extinct.

The Halal method causes the most rapid and efficient bleeding compared with all other methods that use stunning. As blood clots after death, the blood could be removed effectively only by cutting the blood vessels while the animal is alive and where the nervous system and the heart is fully functional. The force of contraction or beating of the heart in animals where the brain or spinal cord is not damaged and where no loss of function is caused, throwing out the blood (exsanguinations) through the cut vessels occur very quickly. The rapid and deep respiration that follows also helps in an efficient flow of blood from the animal’s body. Maximum blood removal from the animal is necessary to preserve the keeping quality of meat and its taste. In order to squeeze much of the blood out of the meat, the nervous connection between the brain, heart and other body tissues should be maintained. This is the reason for not cutting the spinal cord in the Dhabh method. Thus the ritual method is the best method which naturally allows the maximum exsanguination (throwing-out of the blood) from the carcass. Presence of blood in the flesh enhances putrefaction (meat gets rotten) as blood is a good culture medium for bacterial growth.
The other factor that causes concern and needs justification is whether the Dhadh method is more painful than the ‘humane methods’. To determine whether cattle feel the act of their throat cut, Temple Grandin (1994) of the Department of Animal Sciences of the Colorado University, USA, deliberately applied the head-restrainer lightly so that the animals could pull their heads out; but none of the 10 cattle moved or attempted to pull their heads out during the cutting process, indicating that no significant pain was felt. Also observations by him on hundreds of cattle and calves during Shechita slaughter had showed that there was a slight quiver when the knife first contacted the throat. In both types of ritual slaughter methods, the cutting is performed very rapidly with a sharp knife and usually within about 10 seconds the skin, windpipe, gullet and the large blood vessels in the neck region are severed. Blood gushes out quickly and this extensive haemorrhage causes unconsciousness and it deepens further as bleeding proceeds. Thus its sensitivity to pain is lost. The advantages of the Dhabh method, apart from being the least expensive method of animal slaughter, is that the rapid incision with a sharp knife reduces pain and the animal becomes unconscious usually within a few seconds. Gregory and Wotton in 1984 has reported in an article in the British Veterinary Journal that if the two carotid arteries and the two jugular veins of the neck are cut, it takes on an average 14 seconds to induce loss of brain responsiveness or unconsciousness in sheep and also had estimated that 99 % of the sheep would become unconscious within 27 seconds when all these vessels are cut. Hence, as these four blood vessels are quickly severed in the Halal method, it could be assumed that in the Islamic ritual slaughter method whatever pain the animal may feel is also for a very short period.

Knowledge about the pain felt by animals to external stimuli (e.g. striking with a stick or hand) is only inferential, usually based on analogy with human experience. People assume that the intensity of the pain felt when a strong smack is given to a man is equally felt when the same is given to an animal. This is not true. The intensity of pain felt differs between man and different animals. It is a common experience that if a smack is given to a buffalo or a bull, the response elicited to the pain by these animals is much less compared with that given to a human being. When an animal’s neck is cut with a sharp knife strictly according to the Dhabh method, one does not observe the animal struggling during the process of cutting which is completed within about 10 seconds. But, one observes convulsions ( e.g. movement of the legs ) soon after the cut is made with blood oozing-out giving an impression to the spectator that the animal is suffering from pain and the method of slaughter is very cruel. Although the animal may feel a mild pain for the first few seconds, the struggling of the animal seen is mainly due to contractions of the muscles of the body in response to the brain sending signals through the spinal cord to the muscles ‘asking’ to send more blood (oxygen) to the brain as the brain is not getting the required oxygen supply from the blood due to the cutting of the major blood vessels of the neck. The occurrence of these muscular contractions is a physiological process to squeeze the blood vessels in the underlying muscles and to force-out the blood towards the heart and from there to the brain. But as the major blood vessels of the neck are cut, the blood supply to the brain is virtually shut off and thus there is a reduced oxygen supply to the brain cells, causing convulsions or epileptic seizures. As the nervous system is not severed from the brain (due to the spinal cord in the neck is not cut) in the Halal slaughter method, the brain keeps on sending messages through the spinal cord to the muscles to squeeze out and send more and more blood to the brain. However, as the blood vessels of the neck are cut, the blood oozes-out from the cut ends of these vessels and do not reach the brain. During this convulsive stage, the animal falls into a state of unconsciousness due to the extensive haemorrhage and are thought not to feel the pain although convulsions continue. Finally, the animal dies due to lack of oxygen supply to the brain. Epileptic human patients undergoing convulsions tend to fall and hurt themselves, but they do not even remember how they got hurt. Thus, convulsions seen in an animal soon after the neck is cut, does not mean that the animal is suffering from pain. On the other hand, convulsions occurring in the slaughtered animal help to throw-out the blood from the muscles and other tissues of the body, and thus are beneficial as it produces a healthy and tasty meat, devoid of much blood; which in turn also helps to prolong the keeping quality of meat under non refrigerated conditions. In the ‘humane methods’ of slaughter, usually the animal’s head is completely severed from the neck soon after the stunning process and thus convulsions are very minimal or absent, which means more blood remains in the meat. Hence, it could be said that the Halal slaughter method produces a better quality meat than that produced from the so called “humane methods of slaughter”.

Thus, there is no doubt that the real beneficiaries of the mechanical, chemical and electrical stunning of animals are the meat industries, as they are more concerned with the speed of producing the meat than anything else. Whereas, the Dhabh or halal method is a slower process but a more simple, economical and easy to practice method in a country like Sri Lanka where only a few animals are slaughtered each day in the different slaughter houses scattered in the different parts of the country. Also meat produced by the Ha1a1 method with less amount of blood are more healthier and preserves better under hot and humid conditions as found in most parts of Sri Lanka. However, some non Muslims and Animal Welfare Associations consider the Halal method as a cruel, painful and a barbaric method probably due to their ignorance or due to sheer hypocrisy.

Unfortunately the facilities provided by the local authorities for killing of animals for food are far from satisfactory. Facilities for proper transportation, hygienic places for animals to rest prior to slaughter; feeding and watering; provision of sharp long knives and facilities for restraining and casting of large animals; skilled butchers; and qualified veterinarians for supervision and meat inspection etc. should be provided. Besides this, those engaged in religious slaughter should also be properly trained in the handling and slaughtering process in order to minimize the suffering of animals prior to slaughter.
It is the question of pain the animal might feel for a few seconds at the time of slaughter or during the last stage of its life that worries some, forgetting the pain and suffering the animal had undergone during its entire life. Although there are advantages and disadvantages in the different methods used for slaughter of food animals, considering all factors put together it is still to be proved that the so called ‘humane techniques’ of slaughter are superior to the Halal method. Today the world Halal food trade is estimated to be US $ 150 Billion per year and thus it is a huge business. To enter this market, the countries exporting any meat or animal-food based products to the Muslim countries should adhere to the Islamic laws pertaining to animal slaughter. Hence, many large-scale livestock farming countries have permitted Halal slaughter in their countries for the sake of financial benefits forgetting their principles of so called ‘humane slaughter’.

The issues pertaining to halal slaughter of food animals has been more complicated at present due to a lack of unity among the Muslims the world-over, and correct interpretation of the Quranic and Shariah laws among some Muslim nations, especially in countries like Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. It is reported that the Malaysian National Council of Fatwa at its meeting on 24th November 1988 have permitted the use of stunning of animal prior to slaughter using the electrical, mechanical and pneumatic stunners with certain laid-down conditions. It is also reported that the Saudi Arabian Standard Organization in a document entitled “Animal Slaughtering Requirements According to Islamic Law” has accepted electrical stunning, provided that it does not kill the animal. However, in the opinion of the author, a doubt exists as to whether the Malaysian and the Saudi authorities have been properly guided by knowledgeable Islamic veterinary scientists and the learned religious leaders before granting such a religious direction or Fatwa. It is high time the Department of Muslim Religious Affairs of Sri Lanka in consultation with the learned and knowledgeable persons takes a correct decision as to whether the use of stunning techniques prior to slaughter are permitted or not in Islam, before the State or other vested parties bring about legislations to compel the Muslims of Sri Lanka also adopt the so called ‘humane slaughter’ methods. This has become an urgent issue as the Sri Lanka Law Commission is giving the final touches to the draft of the new Animal Welfare Act where matters pertaining to animal slaughter is also incorporated and several Sections if implemented are likely to interfere with the existing practices and religious freedom enjoyed by the Muslims and their involvement in the meat trades. On the other hand, if the Muslims want to strictly follow the dietary codes as laid by the Quran and religious laws (Shariah), and Sri Lanka being a country guided by a democratic constitution; no citizen, group or the government should compel them to practice stunning prior to slaughter.

religions are outdated. users of offensive words based on so called religions are fools. Those who want a religion are dependents. they are shame for humanity. Understand that human mind is more powerful than any other force in universe. the only religion we should promote is human religion. concept of almighty creator in unproved because we have to find out the creator of the creator (if you are intelligent enough to understand the reality). So please my fellow human beings shall we adjust our mindset to forget religions for the sake of peace on our mother earth

I have opposing views and I would like to expound on it.

You cannot ignore religion on the basis that there is nothing tangible to place your belief system on, except just nothing but thin air. Some basic concept might jolt you in to believe the ‘POWER’ behind the force, except you still cannot see it with you naked eyes. But only visualize it. Take for instance, a live wire. You know there is a current voltage which you cannot see, but you have faith it is there and therefore you will not dare touch it.

If you are a bit creative, you may find many concepts along those same lines to prove to yourself, although you cannot see them, the voice behind it is truly who you expect it to be, as in the case of the phone. So is the concept of God, but at a much higher level. How does every animal born into the world have a close bond with its mother, and knows exactly where to get its nourishment to survive. Who taught or gave those instructions on how they should behave upon birth? Okay, if we accept, it is genetically coded, but who created those codes? Don’t you think it must come from a superior being?

Just like everything else in the world, there are somethings we just cannot question but take it for granted, since it is beyond the scope of our comprehension. Examples of which may be “Why is there something rather than nothing? Is there life after death? Does God exist?’ etc., Many can do their own research on religions that exist in the world today, and come to their own conclusions. Similarly, there are such things we just cannot question about God, since it does not fit in with His role as the Creator of the Universe.

God does not take human form. God Himself was not created but has been the Creator of the entire universe and everything in it. God does not make ungodly acts but only godly acts. God does not make mistakes, God does not forget, God does not sleep, ever nor will He ever die. All of these mentioned attributes are only applicable to human, animal and plant species and are not God qualities.

Anyone can follow the life changing experiences on Youtube, of those who convert to religion to establish connection with God, experience the spirit of God guiding them through troubled times, and be happy just knowing they are being watched over by Him. Islam is one such religion, and that is why so many people the world over want to study it, experience it and then convert to Islam to be a part of the family. Statistics on the many conversions to Islam and projections forecast well into the future will tell the true story. I invite you to do some of your own research on the Quranic texts, and experience God Almighty – Allah speaking directly and addressing you, and opening your heart to understanding Him. Life is too short to miss out on the many opportunities coming your way. Who knows, this may just be one. You owe it to yourself.

there are or may be things beyond perfect human understanding, but it’s silly and unproductive to use them to substantiate an almighty god.

it’s nature that has programmed life, it’s nature that automatically program the balance of universe. it’s behavior pattern of energy. there’s no proof that energy has life. but life may be described as a form of energy.

you mentioned about a superior being responsible for creating genes to pass parent qualities down the generations. it’s a good question to ask.

but the question we have to raise is who gave that superior being (god) the ability to design genes.
all the faithfuls of god avoid this question saying that god cannot be questioned.it’s sin and almighty will be angry with you etc. it’s just fear; it’s nothing but fear.

dear friend there’s a burden upon your head. please keep it on the ground and relax. what is your burden? it is that almighty god that has been fed into your mind by somebody.
nature has given you a brain. make the maximum use of it.

as we know there are different forms of life, there may be beings with more or different physical and mantel abilities than man. (so far we haven’t met). such an alien being may be called as god

look at the world. some people are fortunate some are less fortunate some are unfortunate. why is that?
can an almighty do that injustice?
What about the animal world? from microbes to human beings

Islam is opposed to exploitation in every form and stands for fair and equitable dealings among all men. To charge interest from someone who is constrained to borrow to meet his essential consumption requirement is considered an exploitative practice in Islam. Charging of interest on loans taken for productive purposes is also prohibited because it is not an equitable form of transaction.

Riba or interest is prohibited in Islam as it appears explicitly in the Holy Qur’an. There is complete unanimity among all Islamic schools of thought regarding the prohibition of riba. Since the Qur’an is the undisputed source of guidance in Islam, there is unanimous agreement on the fact that Islam has forbidden the practice of riba. The debate on whether riba is interest or usury has been settled. The ulama have made crystal clear that both interest and usury fall within the domain of riba. The modern banking system is organized on the basis of a fixed payment called interest. That is why the practices of the modern banking system are in conflict with the principles of Islam which strictly prohibit riba.

If by any chance we receive interest money from a Bank, as from a Savings Account, we will give that interest money away as charity without even thinking, expecting nothing in return – no benefits, no merits for the act of charity, except the thought that we simply did it to please our Lord and Creator Allah, to obey His commands and earn His acceptance.

    Brother Hilmy,

Just as much as I understand the depth of anti Muslim hatred fomented by BBS and their ilk, and the horrific consequences such as the Aluthgama killings, I must also stress that Muslims should not move more and more into an exclusive corner. Muslims must move closer to the main stream with less rhetoric about how great Islam is etc. Many things that the followers of Islam do is best left unsaid for obvious reasons. The need of the day is to disregard differences and become a homogenous people who can live with true camaraderie. The less we beat the drums of each others exclusive religious rights the more we can achieve by way of true camaraderie.

Blaming (justifiably so) organisations such as BBS for gross practices of racism and at the same time talking up the rights and exclusivity of your own minority group is bound to lead to more conflict.

Aiyo here we go again. Name calling and abuse and fear mongering. Even Britain allows Sharia banking for muslim clients no? This is very different from backward Sharia laws like forcing women to wear black burqas from head to toe or be lashed for romance or beheaded for having sex. SL is a very poor nation with very little in terms of foreign exchange reserves. Aiyo Aiyo as people say. What is the point of all this shouting. It is better to stop the spread of wahabi ISIS terrorism and BSS demagoguery than having a spat over banking systems no? If it makes sense to attract forex to SL what is wrong with it ?

Two very relevant points this gentleman raises. All those ministers and MPs live off of house maid remittances!

“The Islamic countries that count for the majority of our expatriate labour that brings in over $ 7 billion have remained silent against the racism towards the Muslims. The tea industry’s biggest clientele is in the Middle East.”

Yep yep yep. Imagine if the Middle East stops recruiting Lankan doctors, engineers, civil engineers, construction experts, surveyors, electricians pilots, hotel workers accountants, wharf clerks, drivers, electricians, maids, nurses how much instability there will be in SL.

SRI LANKA IS FIRST AND FOREMOST A SINHALA-BUDDHST COUNTRY! The morally and ethically superior Sinhalese should not allow Sharia nonsense in their only country. With Sharia Banking, Muslim businessmen loot naive Sinhalese’s wealth. Over the past 30 years Sri Lanka has been Muslimized dangerously.

During Ashroff’s time in the Easter province, Buddhist archaeological sites had been destroyed and bulldozed to the ground and the lands had been given to his supporters. Now, Badaudeen is destroying Wilpattuwa forest and the trees have been cut down by his Muslim supporters.

Muslims have also invaded Kuragala Buddhist Site, Muhudu Maha Viharaya Buddhist site, Devanagala Buddhist site, Dabulla holy land, Anuradhapua holy land, Kandy Buddhist holy land, etc.

No need to remind everyone the Halal fraud here!!!

Everyone knows that Muslims stared the communal violence in 1915 by throwing stones at the Kandy Asala Perahara(parade) and they repeated the same in Aluthgama in 2014 and started another communal violence.

If BBS weren’t there, these Muslims would walk all over Sinhalese, so more power to BBS.

Muslim writers, stop playing the ‘Racist Card’. Hope that you read Aesop’s fable ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’, just as the wolf did truly come at last, racism will come one day.

There is a limit that anyone can tolerate Muslim menace.

Please note that there are few good Muslims still exist in Sri Lanka, those few ones are absolute gems.

It was never an exclusive Sinhalese Buddhist land, as large parts of the island was exclusively Tamil from ancient times and ruled exclusively by Tamil kings and chiefs. Even the Kandyan kings who ruled parts of the east at times belonged to a Tamil speaking Naicker dynasty from Tamil Nadu. It only became a Sinhalese Buddhist majority land due to the British, who in 1833 joined the Tamil and Sinhalese parts of the island that had always remained separate and made it one unit and a new colony called Ceylon( derived from the ancient Tamil word for the island Eelam). This is how the Eelam Tamil nation who were the masters of their own land and an outright majority became a minority people in this newly created colony and the Sinhalese who were only confined to the south west and central parts of the island became the majority in the whole island, due to this move and are now claiming the entire island as their own exclusive domain. Get your facts correct instead of posting the distorted history from such rubbish Sinhalese extremist sites like Lankaweb or Spur

David, your claim that Sri Lanka is the only country for Buddhists is a hackneyed cliche. You guys are so insecure in your mindset that you fear your neighbour walking in to your bedroom when you are dreaming of a Muslim invasion. The typical Sinhala mindset. Just forget that they are different and part of SINHA Le, and you would find peace and tranquility. You will be able to sleep.

Racism is establishing ethnic villages for a unique race (eg ethnic villages for muslim race in vilpattu)
Racism is building political parties for a certain race (eg Muslim congress)
Racism is claiming for a separate land for a separate race (eg demanding separate muslim region in east )
SO who are the utter racists ???
which is the utter racism ????

Bitter truth, go look at yourself in the mirror to see the real racist. There is no Muslim village in Wilpattu. The place you are talking is Marachikattu, which has always been a Muslim village that was taken over by the army during the war. The colonised villages where Mahida RAJA brought people and settled them are in Namal Gama, Nandamithragama, Borawewa. All new sinhala settlements. They have been brought to spy on the Tamils. If that is not F…king racism, what is. You idiots are blinded by the propaganda of the racist Sinhala Buddhists. Talking about racist political parties, are you forgetting the Jathika Hela Urumaya, BBS and other extremists

Shame on the Sinhala buddhists. NOTHING belongs to them. Sinhalese are a ďìscarded people from Bengàl. Srilanka belongs to the Veddas. Present legal system runs on Roman Dutch law, Political administration on Western democracy and the European parliamentary system, Buddhism is not a religion but a philosophy. But they have copied Christmas carols as Bakthi gee in Wesak, Sinhala new year from the Hindus, awurudu kumaraya from Santa claus. Wishnu, ganadevi, paththini etc ., devalas from Hindus, Dresses shirt and pants, frocks from the western christians. Bank and economy system from the jews. So whats wrong on Sharia banking from muslims as already the whole world has embraced the system.
Sinhala buddhists women wash pots, pans and dirty linen in muslim houses in the middle east and saving the Sri lankan economy. Why not BBS stop such women. Why purchasing oil from the muslim middle east instead of Venezuela? Why took help as arms and assistance from muslim Pakistan to combat the LTTE..? Why allowing the government to export tea to Iran and Iraq? If the world muslims impose sanctions on Srilanka, Sinhala buddhists have to go on Pindapaathaya. I salute majority Sinhala buddhists who are not racists as very NICE people to live with, but the President shouldn’t fall in the prey of the uncivilised racists BBS. Hope saner thoughts will prevail.

Paul, How can you be so sure?
The Sinhala language shares strong features with some of the Prakrits of northern India.
As for race, the entire Sri Lankan population, irrespective of ethnic identity, is a mixed breed.
One cannot at one and the same time have the Vijaya legend (discarded people) and then dismiss it (from Tamil Nadu and not Bengal).

There was no historically Tamilnadu in the south Asian sub-continent, until Madras state became Tamilnadu.

Your name Sekara it self is of Tamil origin derived from Sekaran or Sekaram. Names ending in Sekaran Sekaram is only found amongst Tamils in India and Sri Lanka and most of these Sinhalese Sekaras are largely descended from the Tamil Cholas invaders or immigrants.
Now let us come to the Sinhalese language. It is basically has a very strong Dravidian foundation, with only a Indo Aryan superstructure built upon this strong Dravidian foundation. On the surface it has borrowed many words from Prakrit Pali and Sanskrit largely due to the influence of Buddhism and a little bit due some influence from a very small but influential ban of Prakrit speaking immigrants and traders we do not know from which part of India. However the largest amount of vocabulary I’m modern Sinhalese is from Tamil around 40% it is this language that is the base and foundation for modern Sinhalese. With the mixture of Tamil, Pali and Sanskrit languages, evolved that Sinhala language during 8 A.D. It was not Pali or Sanskrit, but the Tamil language that helped in the formation of the Sinhala alphabets. The alphabets of the Sinhala language are round in shape like the alphabets of the other Dravidian languages. Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and proto-Tamil. In the 10th century. Tamils changed the shape of their alphabets to the square shape. The grammar lexicon syntax and the alphabet of the Sinhalese language is purely based on Tamil and not on any other North Indian language. According to Dr. C.E. Godakmubara, the Sinhala Grammar Sidathsangarawa was based on the Tamil Grammar Virasolium in the 11th A.D
Rev. S. Gnanapiragasam – “There are more than 4.000 Tamil words in the Sinhala vocabulary. If the Sinhala vocabulary is stripped of all the Tamil words there will be no Sinhala language.”
There were no Sinhalese in Lanka or in any part of the world until the Dipa Vamsa for the first time, referred to the descendants of Tamil (Hindus) who embraced Buddhism in 246 B.C. as Sihala on account of the Lion (no relevance). There is no culture called Sinhala culture. It is the Tamil culture that is projected as Sinhala culture. The 14th day of April is observed as New Year, day only by the Tamils and Sinhala people throughout the world.
This fact is strong evidence that the Sinhala people inherited this practice from their Tamil ancestors who embraced Buddhism in 246 B.C. It is stupid to deny that fact. When there was no Sinhala language in Lanka or in any part of the world before 8th A.D., it is thuggery to claim that there were Sinhala people in Lanka prior to the 8th century A.D. Just as the descendants of Tamils who embraced Buddhism in 246 B.C. claim they are Arya Sinhalese; Tamils of the Western Coast, from Ragama to Kalpitiya, after adopting Sinhala as their mother tongue, (after the introduction of free education) claim thy are Arya Sinhalese. In Sri Lanka any person who adopts Sinhala as mother tongue ipso facto is an Aryan,
Yes there was no Tamil Nadu in ancient India,Nor was there any Bengal, however the ancestors of the vast majority of modern day Sinhalese did arrive from the area that is modern day Tamil Nadu. In fact around 50% of the modern day Sinhalese are descended from largely low caste indentured labour and slaves that were brought into the island first by the Portuguese and then the Dutch from the then Tamil country in India. Now modern day Tamil Nadu, Kerala and southern Andhra. Even the Govigamma are Dravidian Sudras. The word Govi means the one who reaps basically a farmer. This is derived from the ancient classical Tamil/Dravidian word koi which means to pluck or to reap. EG Malar Koiyuthal ( to pluck a flower).
The Mahavamsa and the Vijaya story is a myth. There no such thing metioned in any part of India in the north or in the south . Of a wayward prince and his 500 companions banished from their land and forced to sail. Any way North Indians have never had a history of travelling by sea or conquering lands. It was the Tamils who did this. If there was any migration from North India it would have been minimal, just a few traders and immigrants and they would have travelled down south to the Tamil country and them from there come to the island.
Racist Sinhalese like you even with Tamil origin surnames still want to pathetically cling to this myth and use that as a basis to commit genocide and war crimes on the islands Tamil speaking population. The Indigenous Eelam Tamils the Tamil Muslims and the Indian origin estate Tamils

Buddhism is a philosophy as well as a religion for Sri Lankan Buddhists, however that depends on the intelligence level of people. as you are fond of western thought accept it and learn Buddhist philosophy; i’m sure it’ll give you a good mental boost.
King Vijaya was banished as he was anti social but labelling his descendents as anti social after 2500 is ridiculous. according to your point of view Australians are also discarded and how do you describe americans. on his arrival vijaya found a civilized society led by kuveni and there were no vaddas. unfortunately vijaya destroyed kuveni & and her clan and that led to the creation of vaddas. it’s a sad story
Your point of view on christmas carrols and vesak is incorrect. vesak started long before the birth of jesus and there’re no clear records to say buddists copied it from christmas. may be vesak celebrations had had an impact on carols. however its natural when 2 cultures are met exchange is possible. please don’t be jealous of vesak.
we are reluctant to accept your banking system because its primitive. profit sharing and not demanding an interest is common in grassroot level in almost all cultures but in business it must be interest for capital. that is economics.
it’s wrong that our politicians send women as house maids. and it’s good for us to buy oil from the world market not that those countries are bad but there are bad people like you who suffers a lot because of that.

The racist comments to an otherwise excellent reminder to the good governance president that Sri Lana is a multi-cultural, Multi religious democracy that he pledged to defend has been forgotten. President Sirisena was given the whole hearted support by the Tamil, Muslim and the non-catholic christens citizens of this country to usher in a peaceful country that would guarantee their rights, especially the right of speech and worship. Like all past despots, Sirisena too seems to be taking a racist agenda to please the racist Buddhists, especially the low cast monks who are trying to climb the Buddhist religious heir achy, This is the same level to which Mahinda Rajapaksa fell, thinking that his 2010 win was because of the Buddhist vote. NOT TRUE as the whole nation voted him in gratitude for eliminating terrorism.

Today, Sirisena’s foray in to the Buddhist Sinhala supremacy will bring him down like Humpty Dumpty, with the creates fall in the immediate future. He can evaluate his popularity by holding the local government elections where his wing of the SLFP would be placed 4th with the UNP having a landslide with either the JVP or Mahinda wing in second place. His stooge Faiser Mustapa, who has been placed in the ministry of local government to avert this embarrassment by not holding the election citing delimitation delays. Either way, Sirisena who could not have dreamt of a win without Ranil’s sacrifices will not stand a second chance. He knows this very well and That is why as a smart ass, he announced that he will not compete a second term. Who would be stupid enough to vote him again

What this stupid Hilmy and the Muslim community does not understand is that the new wave of racism is coming from the Presidential secretariat itself. A new unit has been established under the former NGO kakka, Shiral Lakthilake to protect the Buddhist business community from the minority business interests. The introduction of Islamic finance and the license given to Amana bank has helped move all of the Muslim investments away from other banks. These vested interests have made representations to the Buddhist unit now headed by Racist lakthilake who has unleashed the BBS on this. The money that the German’s and Swiss invested in Shiral Lakthilake is now being put t good use to target the Muslims and destroy their economy.

Your comment is a bit harsh, but you hit the nail on the head, this is exactly what is happening.

All these while most of the Muslims had their money in the banks without any returns, but now they have a place to invest and get a return, before this they had to invest their money in a business or trade to earn a return thus earning the wrath of the majority community as well as they think the Muslims are owning all the trade and business in the country, but what they were actually doing was investing on businesses to get a return as the religion doesn’t allow to take interest.

With the introduction of shariah banking, without much risk they can earn a return on their hard earned money just like the other communities who invest their money in the banks and get an interest without any effort.
