MR’s Law College Friend Eva Wanasundara Now Front-Runner In Chief Justice Race

Supreme Court Justice Eva Wanasundara has surpassed Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya to become the front-runner for the position of Chief Justice.

Wanasundara, with a legal carrier spanning nearly 39 years, is currently the most senior Supreme Court judge and she is likely to replace Priyasath Depp who is retiring from office this week.

Justice Eva Wansundera

President Maithripala Sirisena’s first choice for the position was Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya who argued at one point that Sirisena could continue in office for six years, despite the five-year limit imposed by the 19th Amendment to the constitution.

However, top government sources told Colombo Telegraph on Saturday that Wanasundara had overtaken Jayasuriya to become the front-runner in what seems to be a ‘Chief Justice race’.

It is still not entirely clear whether the sudden shift happened due to Jayasuriya’s reluctance to accept the post or a last-minute lobby orchestrated by Jayasundara.

However, Wanasundara’s close personal relationship with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family has raised concerns in some quarters of the government, Colombo Telegraph learns.

Wanasundara, in an interview with ‘Deshaya newspaper’ in July 2014, publicly admitted that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was one of her closest friends during the ‘Law College Days’.

In the same interview, Wanasundara said, “I was suddenly called up to Temple Trees by President Rajapaksa. He just asked me to drop by at Temple Trees on my way home after work. I was surprised at this gesture but went to meet the President nevertheless. Upon greeting me, the President said he was going to appoint me a Supreme Court judge and asked if I had any concerns. I was shocked by the sudden announcement. At the same time, I felt so happy as I always wanted to become a judge and suddenly, the person in front me was offering exactly what I wanted.”

Further explaining the level of her close friendship with Rajapaksa, Wanaasundara said, “One day, one of my colleagues had shown a picture of me to another friend saying he had an affair with me. Mahinda, a close friend of mine then, had seen this incident. He promptly conveyed this to me as he was concerned that it could bring me a ‘bad name'”

There were allegations that Wanasundara soft-pedalled several cases involving the members of the former first family, especially former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, due to her alleged connection with the former President.

The system is a fraud! They are all corrupt, this generation of politicians, judges and lawyers who have destroyed Lanka.

Seniority should NOT be a criterion for selection because this generation of over 55s is the most corrupt in the history of the country, and as this generation is living longer due to advances in health and nutrition they are blocking younger and more honest and talented generation under 6o from top jobs.
The retirement age for all politicians and judges, should be 60.

Who ever the CJ would be, it is no easy today any of them to react the way how MR- unanimously appoint CJ did it.

That is clear. Today people are bit matured than had been the days of Rajapakshes era all was decided and left to the air through BIASED media remember ?
There had been public statements made by Rajitha Senaraathne who too was one of the powerful minister – that they had no voice within MR led rule, but Rajapkshe family. And Rajapkshe saranan gachchami was the slogan went viral. ::: THIS was sounded as a public malicious statement against Rajakshes autocratic rule.
So I beleive given ANY rajapakshe friend would be there too would have to face the very same reaction that the current CJ faces.
What we want is a powerufl unbiased CJ to this country – will remain further as a dream. no doubt about that.
People have no idea about less corruption governance or good governance but they want Rajakshe animals get back and loot from where stoped it by 2015.

Is that India wants this way.

Earlier he said he wants a Law and Order minister acceptable to IC; that is why he couldn’t appoint Ponny as that. IC really has an interest in Law and Order only to straighten it, not because of any specific of Ponny. But India brought Ponny down in 2010 election. Now India wants no cases of War Crime goes through the Lankawe Supreme Court as even Fundamental Right cases. That is why this strategy. When he was In New York, this clown declared that he won the war. That put him and Old Royals in additional new Jeopardy. Old King, after returning from India suggested he may approve America like policing to Tamils. There, petty crime policing is with Local Governments. There Local governments are under State Governments, but in Lankawe Locals are under Colombo Aanduwa. In other words, he just wants to cheat Tamils and IC on that too. After India’s pressure he conducted the NPC election. But He claimed he was willing to bring Tamil the democratic ruling. Now current NPC is going out of after continuous 5 years of Colombo’s Choke Hold.

Correct as far as I remember. Our faith in the entire system is now taking a beating.
        .
We’ve been watching in amazement the American circus leading to Kavanaugh’s appointment – and now we have this! For Mahinda Rajapaksa’s entry to Law College, the most charitable explanation was that then Justice Minister, Felix Dias Bandaranaike, wanted to have more knowledgeable M.Ps, and so brought in a regulation that young MPs (below 28 years of age, or so) could enroll. No entrance exam. MR was he only beneficiary.
        .
Sarath Silva as Chief Justice seemed to be the nadir. Now we have this story. I guess that as we get older, our memories seem to fill up with ever worse perceptions of dishonesties and injustices prevailing everywhere. What can we possible do? Responsibly keep one another informed and hope that at least political elections are held fairly.
        .
All this points to having street-wise Nagananda K. as leader.

RTI – is in action today. so why cant they reveal them yet today ?

From what he adds in international and nation forum, he cant have intelligence to behave so. Just imagine recent visit to India – whenever MR was interviewed, his responses were half. Just adds few sentences without completion.

While he was still INDIA, their JO spokesmen (Gonthadipila) seconded what MR added to India press interviews. But immediately MR return to home, he recorrected it, as he did not say that his Brother would be the common candidate to JO during next PE.
Would any educated leaderever behave so ?

May well be, these half pronounced statements EXCHANGED with CHINESE business men created all the mess, being betrayed our nation to CHINA for their HIGH interest loans.

Better understanding is based on good education. That Rajakashes or their offsprings would never have.
Lately one another alike interview was performed with Yoshita -in which he had the audacity to add that he completed a Post Graduate course.
How come these buggers to earn post graduates course not having the basic degrees earned.
As I myself know it well, noone can be blessed with PG studies not having and basic degrees done.
These men seem to be thinking not just JO but entire folks are the utter fools.
Rajakshes abused the innocience of the gullable folks. Basta

I knew Dharmalingam MP for Uduvil fairly well.
We were associated as office bearers in a friendship society that involved an important country in the world’s stage during the decades of the 1970-80’s.
But he never indicated to me that he was a Law Student.at that time.
His son who is now a Parliamentarian was then a schoolboy.

Dharmalingam MP didn’t have one to sit for him the Final and have him murdered by LTTE killing drama. So he never became a lawyer.

Do you say because Tamils opposed the Shobhasa education, they all should have left schools right on that sport. Uncompleted Dharmalingam only came into your memory you know why is it? Any way who murdered him? Attanagalla queen or Felix?

After making an assessment of the way “Justice” and “Judiciary” heading, time is ripe for the PEOPLE to do what we saw at “HUNUWATAYE KATHAWA” (Chalk Circle) of Late Mr. Henry Jayasena – the producer of that stage play. In that drama, there came a time to look for a “Judge” to decide on the “Legitimate Owner” of a child and very many other injustices. What the “PEOPLE” did was to drag a “VAGABOND” from the street and “FORCED” him to be the “JUDGE” and make “DECISIONS”. Before the hearings, that “Vagabond Judge” announced publicly that he was taking “Bribes” and did in fact accept such bribes . In deciding on complaints of “Rapes”, he himself wanted to “Experience” and indulge in those activities. At the end, that “Vagabond Judge” made the most PRAISEWORTHY JUDGEMENT of handing over the custody of the child to the woman who LOVED the child most. So time has come for the PEOPLE to forcefully drag another of “THEIR KIND” (not any named by Presidents and other Dignitaries) and force him/her to be the “Chief Judge” of the country. He/She will definitely SERVE the PEOPLE and do JUSTICE as was done by “ASADEK” in the “Hunuwataye Kathawa”.

Today, you will not find the ideal person for the exalted positions. Everybody has some kind of an issue. As I have commented before, might as well stick to seniority when doing otherwise has resulted in the choice proven to be undesirable. I do not know these individuals personally. But I understand that Ms. Wanasundara has only three more months to reach the compulsory age of retirement. So, let her enjoy the perks of the position just for three months and then the state decide who should be appointed to the top job.

OMG what a choice. No way should this woman be appointed as she is a close friend of the Rajapakses and making her the CJ will only ensure that good governance and corruption will never be implemented in SL. Many stories circulating about this beauty and the relationship with MR should disqualify her from even being a judge. A thorough background check by the CID is required before the patholaya MS sells the country and appoints her to protect the Rajapakses.

Term limits not age limits will help new progressive blood to the Supreme Court.
a new process of choosing SC candidates should be given to votes by Parliamentarians by secret ballots; obviously, this will need some constitutional changes.

What a way to discriminate against Sinhala buddhists. Mahinda Rajapakse was batch mate she cannot be a CJ. There was Tamil justice who had the same mother tomgue as LTTE had. Another chief Justice, I am pretty sure he was protestant. Why did not you bring the same type of questioning.

Even in USA, judges are selected on political lines, as happened recently.
The ‘winner’ survived allegations of sexual molestation, as the President’s party had a slim majority, and a ‘sham’ inquiry which was held, ignored the main accuser, and favoured him.

Hence, we in Sri Lanka, may be much better at selection of ‘chief’ ‘judges’.

Else where Michael Roberts explain how important it is to disassemble the Asian buddhist culture in irder to protect the Modern trrade practices and Indian Ocean. Sri lanka protestant – govts did that by eliminating ministry of cultural affairs instead installing Ministries for religious affairs. So, all the religions are equal now. Lawyers helpful and BASL or what ever have done their job very well. All the data can be sent anywhere the software wants as specific software are installed. Now, Judgs should be in that way. Relelse all the Sinhala buddhist judges and promote Tamil and preferably protestant Judges. Ranil knows every thing. but he is not the president so he is silent.

” A person with 39 years of service to the legal profession ”

That is right. But one has to consider why Jayam Jayam didn’t want the job. That is the one causing you reply to all these nasty comments. Did he revived a pre-greeting from Old Royals for having selected to the job? That can’t be an internal info, but Colombo Media may not coming forth.
But remember Jayam Jayam could have misinterpreted the 19A for the favor of New King, but that doesn’t save his job, still. He is still floating with a bottomless boat. Anytime may sink before reaching the shore. You know Jayam(IGP) was the hero, who saved the New Prince in the Movie “Brawl at the Night Club, Clique” . I hear that former CJ Nevil Samarakoon was the polling agent for UNP at Alexandra College but JRJ appointed him to as CJ he performed impartially and once JRJ tried to remove him and Late Athulathmudali & Gamini Dissanayake prevented it. The problem is with the quality of person and not what he did in the past. Problem is such quality persons are not be seen now. Most of the educated elite become boot lickers of the politician just to get an appointment some where. One example is the Law Professor Prathiba Mahanamahewa. People will not forget what he talked at TV interviews when MR removed former CJ Shirani Bandaranayake. The Double DR GJ and Prof Karlo also belongs that set. Society also don’t demand the Politician to be honest as these rober barons are getting elected at next election. May God save lana.
