Namal Rajapaksa, the eldest son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has demanded to know on what grounds did the government clip the security detail provided to his father.
“As security deteriorates, how can the government justify removing Army protection of President Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka’s only leader to end the brutal terrorist war?,” Namal queried in a tweet.
His call for explanation comes after the security detail of the former President was pruned, with army personnel assigned to him, being replaced by police personnel.
While no formal reason was given for the change in the security detail, it is learnt that a decision was taken at a higher level to replace all army personnel with police personnel, although the number of personnel who provide security for Rajapaksa will remain the same.
Last month, the joint opposition claimed that the former president’s life was in danger and in the event anything unwarranted happened to him, the government must take responsibility. According to SLFP MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, even though Rajapaksa’s bullet proof vehicle had required repairs after an accident, the government was yet to allocate the required amount to carry out the repairs.

We the People wish to suggest that the army personnel have been replaced by an equivalent number of police personnel, who should be quite capable of providing security to the ex-Lokka. It is also because the overall security situation has improved significantly since the last presidential election, further justifying the placement of army personnel in barracks, where they should be not seen or heard from unless a major breach of public security emerges; i.e. one that the police are unable to handle by themselves.
This should gradually diminish the role we have seen one the past decade or so, of the army growing in numbers at huge cost to the exchequer, and yet deploying them to cook but, sell both packets in wayside restaurants, build roads, stadia and convention centres, in addition to doing the bidding of the young and dashing MP’s paternal uncle Goata, who was obsessed with beautifying the city of Colombo while letting the rights of the We the People (particularly the minorities amongst us) to be trampled on.

How many Security personnel have been reduced? From the article it does not appear that any number of security has been reduced, but only that the Army has been replaced by Police personnel.
Namal, do you remember how your father reduced security cadre from the previous President on the grounds that she did not require so many personnel to protect her?
