Namal-Sajin-Lalith Lead Pre-Geneva Onslaught For Sri Lanka; Pays Rs 15.7 Million Per Month To Lobbying Firms

Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Monitoring MP of the External Affairs Ministry Sajin Vaas Gunewardane, and most recently Hambantota District MP Namal Rajapaksa are leading Sri Lanka’s diplomatic onslaught ahead of the UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva this March.

Namal Rajapaksa, eldest son of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Member of Parliament, and heir apparent

Rajapaksa has joined Gunewardane and Weeratunge in the US where the trio will commence a massive campaign of lobbying to soften Washington’s stance towards Colombo ahead of the Council sessions. It is unclear what Namal Rajapaksa’s contribution to this effort would be, given the gravity of the situation and the gargantuan task at hand to change opinion about Sri Lanka’s commitment to addressing major human rights concerns and promote reconciliation.

Tough times are ahead for Sri Lanka in Geneva, with the Government being forced to go into overdrive to combat the international pressure very early on.

The Sunday Times notes that the Presidential Secretary (and now his entourage) must fly out to Washington to plead Sri Lanka’s case despite the fact that a fully fledged embassy with 100 percent political appointees and two public relations outfits, one retained by the Embassy and another by the Central Bank are unable to make an impact on America’s attitude towards Sri Lanka.

In its political column this week, the Sunday Times revealed that the Rajapaksa Adminsitration spends 15.7 million rupees per month to bankroll two major lobbying firms hired to improve Sri Lanka’s image in the US. “It has reportedly been arranged for the Central Bank by the US public relations and lobbying firm Thompson Advisory Group LLC (TAG). The Central Bank pays this company US $ 66,000 (or more than Rs 8.5 million) every month for three different tasks. As reported earlier, they are to create (1) “a political climate” in the US “more than conducive to enhancing Sri Lanka’s long-term political and economic aspirations,” (2) to create a platform where US decision makers “receive clear and accurate information of Sri Lanka’s current achievements and future plans, and (3) “a higher volume of private sector investment in Sri Lanka,” the Sunday Times said.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington has also separately hired a US lobbying firm, called the Majority Group to lobby the US Government to change its attitude towards Sri Lanka. The Majority Group charges Sri Lanka Rs. 6.5 million for this task, but there have been no results so far.

So taxpayer/public money is used by Rajapaksa to prop up the regime, because International pressure isn’t just about war crimes but also the anti Democratic state of Sri Lanka right now, best illustrated in the Chief Justice impeachment.

      Have you heard the latest:

Tissa Vitharana says when TNA goes to Geneva they should not bring disgrace to the ‘country’. Country is a concept in the minds of people.

Did the Sri Lankan State treat Tamils as belonging to the ‘country’?

What TNA should bring out is the truth and nothing but the truth to bring justice to the victims, both dead and alive and being oppressed.

Now all the foxes are talking about protecting the image of the country: The Sinhala ruling establishment created the image by their atrocities during the 66 years of mis-rule.

Now it is boomeranging on you, learn to take it gracefully!

If the country or the state has done disgraceful things to Tamils, why shouldn’t they say so? Is TV trying to tell the Tamils to put up with the continuing genocide of Tamils so as not to disgrace the ‘country’?

Is it what the leftist philosophy of Russia, China and Cuba taught him?

        Another humbug!

Not all Tmils were LTTE well-wishers. Smilarly not all Sinhalese are against the Tamils. In here what happens is that the regime is confusing people and diverting their sins on every Sri Lnkans. Unfortunately, many of us dont know to draw a line between Sri Lanka and this regime. Rajapaksa admin is taking every advantage they could take on this matter to show the public that the world is against the country. Its the oppositions and the journalists’ duty to make the people aware what the international community is upto, who they against of and why they are against so on and also what exactly going to happen as a result or what would be the out come because of the negative tactics of this regime.
Average Sri Lankans think that China is with us and we are safe. China was with Sudan too but kept mum at the crucial stage. Russia would say one thing and do something else. Besides Russia is not a communist regime anymore, its a capitalist country already. China and Russia while bullying its neighbours would never go against the US or the West.

This year is an important year for Sri Lanka and I wish and hope we will overcome all the obstacles and live in peace. We dont deserve this hatred.

          Hoodwinking wont last long.
          Its all matter of time.

            Omar:

Probably you are right in saying that neither all Tamils nor all Sinhalese are to be faulted. However hard one may try to accept such a stand or belief, it will be delusional to ignore the ground situation.

When the war was over, the regime paraded in triumphalism and caged up civilians who have been at the bitter receiving end of both the warring parties. Under the guise of filtering the fleeing LTTers, the regime locked under concentration camps children and women/girls were indiscriminately raped. The collective Sinhalese reaction was to clap their hands in joy. When the civilians were denied of food and medicine as a strategy by the regime to starve out the Tamil civilians, and the fact that they were citizens of the country and what more, the lie of conducting a humanitarian operation, and finally continuing with the bluff of accountability, reconciliation and evolution, all in all cannot escape the mind of an average Tamil that the Sinhalese majority had willingly and shamefully abetted the regime with the massacre of the Tamils. Whether it was the time of JJ or MR, the same scipt has been played out over and over again.

By and large we believe that R Sampanthan has been a pragmatic and understanding leader, with the overriding concern that post-war, the Tamils need to get on with their lives but under the disguise of talking to the TNA, the regime foolishly hoped and acted very deceitfully. When moderate voices are drowned and even when the imitable Sampanthan gets cheated, then what else remains for the Tamils to place any trust or belief on this regime?

Looks like the only way for the Tamils and the TNA is rely on international mechanisms to get what it wants.

              jansee,

I completely agree with your view. Even now as further atrocities against Tamils are continuing only Wickramabahu Karunaratna defends Tamils’ rights with full force.

What are the other Sinhala politicians doing? They want the Sinhala votes, so they don’t care or raise a finger to support Tamils.

All this karma will play out in time: after all Buddha believed in karma; even if the Sinhalese don’t.

              Jansee,
You are right and I could see the grievance and the concern of the Tamil people. It is THE issue that Mahinda Rajapaksa regime is paranoid of. In order to cover this and other HR issues they look for other ways and means to find adequate time. Why do you have to create a BBS all lof a sudden? and attack other religious interests? Do the majority Sinhala people support these social virus?
Are the Buddhists or Buddhism in danger? No, its few racist wanted it for their own survival.

What you saying was the atrocity allegedly carried out by the regime. Its a different subject although it was totally unacceptable in the civilized world.
I was saying that not all people endose what the present regime is doing.

People were celebrating the war victory without any knowledge of those poor souls were denied of food and medicine. But after almost 3 long decades of suffering its normal for any people to celebrate the unexpected victory. Do you say LTTE was a peaceful movement? Didnt they kill people indiscriminately including some genuine Tamil leaders? Didnt they plant bombs in bus stands, railway stations, in banks, by schools, at airport?
Just because LTTE was ruthles doesnt mean that this regime could do anything they want. Nobody gave them carte blanche.

You must be happy Jansee atleast Tamils have educated brainy leaders like Sambanthan, Sumanthiran and Vigneshwaran to fight for your people. What do Sinhalese and Muslims got?

I lost my dear friend (Roshan Herath) in a blast who was not a racist at all. I would rather say Roshan didnt know what rasicm is.

In the final analysis it will be the SUBSTANCE and NOT the SPIN that will determine the international community’s stand on Sri Lanka and next resolution at the UNHRC in Geneva.

Many countries have seen clearly THROUGHT the Jarapassa regime’s spin. David Cameron and US for example.

It is only the Jarapassas and Sinhalaya Modayas who believe their own SPIN!

What do Namal, Lalith Weerathunga, Sajin Vaas have in common ?
    They are all CLOSE confidants.

If the diplomatic relations to be improved – all the mentioned ones should be experts in lanken external affairs ?

Are any of these men qualified to stimulate internal affairs properly ?

This is the abysmal state of external affairs that the island is facing at this critical juncture of the politics.

How does a professional such as Secretary Lalith Weerathunga put up with these morons?

That’s the thing. MR will never allow Namal to be involved in a lost or losing cause. If the UK and US(as the media portrays anyway) are gunning for the regime, then why involve Namal? Namal can travel on holiday anywhere, his uncle might even divert a plane for him,LOL! So what gives?

          Agree. I feel the same.

Some monkey business is going on. Behind the scene.

Possible Rajapassa has been begging and distributing diplomatic candy to bribe Western hypocrites.

Namal might be turned into a national hero, if USA & UK pulls back from the brink.

          Cheers!

Well the thing is what is the likelyhood Western powers will actually do much more than a few vocal condemnations?

Rajapaksa might be thinking that the odds the West will actually do anything meaningfull against his rule is slim, so no reason to keep Namal insulated from his rule.

I don’t really have much faith in the West doing anything when you consider there is no strategic benefit for the West to support Tamils and India is vehemently opposed to holding GOSL accountable.

Mr. Lalith Weeratunga must be biting his teeth for giving the two mentioned to accompany him on this mission. We know who this Sajin Vas Gunawardane was and is. He is capable of so many “shady” activities and MR must be thinking that the International Community members could be enticed into such and “win” them. These nominations itself show that MR is not capable of “evaluating” a situation and never, ever correct himself to do the correct thing. Of course, he does not care what happens to the country and the nation. He will use this “confrontation” at the UNHRC to win the next elections. Ultimately he will gain and the losers will be the ordinary people in the country. In a sense they too deserve that fate.

So many millions of people’s money are being spent by Rajapaksa to avoid implementing the LLRC and improving governance. The people of Sri Lanka are fools to tolerate this appalling waste of their hard earned money.

Is is a joke for Rajapaksa to expect miracles from these three jokers what the two paid lobbying firms were unable to do. Lalith Weeratunga is not a trained diplomat but a civil servant. What does he know about diplomacy? Namal and Sajin are real jokers with zilch knowledge of diplomacy. These three are going to change mighty America’s mind? Can pigs fly? LOL.

I am not against Sri Lanka, however this MOST corrupt government of our entire history. This guy is spending this much money for public relations and what our US embassy staff doing.? This money is not from Mr Rajapkasha’s wallet. There are millions of innocent people in Sri Lanka, they do not have a decent meal.

Lets be honest to ourselves. There are so much of human right violations happening as we speak in Sri Lanka.Killings, rapes, heroine, you name it has become our way of life.

Opposition is in a deep sleep. So its obvious USA and European union have to help Sri Lankans to teach a lesson to this MOST corrupt government .Even India, and African countries are MUCH better than Sri Lanka

Imagine if USA and other European countries do not monitor Sri Lanka closely, what would have happened in Sri Lanka.? These corrupt politicians would do whatever they please to do

These idiots, rapists, drug dealers, must be taught a very good lesson. And we can see its on its way in March.

According to what I have heard, USA,European countries are NOT against Sri Lanka. But this most corrupt government

What goes up, must come down.I firmly believe this is IT for this government…Sri Lanka has become far worse that it was before during Prabakarans time

      Quoting from yours
“These idiots, rapists, drug dealers, must be taught a very good lesson. And we can see its on its way in March.”

How can you expect this while the rural masses- voter base of Rajapaskshes – are kept away from all information ?
These peoples are made blind perhaps forever using – ” HE IS THE ONLY LEADER WHO LIBERATED THE COUNTRY FROM LTTE TERRORISTS”.

People will have no chance to learn true colours of Rajapakshes. It is not fair to put the blame on the opposition. The mechanisms that the bunch of thieves put into action today is tantamount to those of Gadaphis or even akin to Northkorean leader that killed his own uncle to abuse the nation further. Today^s environment is literally crime friendly in the country, UNP, JVP or other parties even if they argue in Parliament, would have no chance. They the rulers show a nice face, but do the other way around. They have all kind of underground net works that have been established by them to run their own ways always.

It is not even another body like our Foreign Ministry where the Minister is a real PANKADAYA while gonbijjas running the scene. So what is the outcome.eventually would be clear. Well,I can understand your agony. But it is all because of the attitudes of our folks – not only the opposition the folks themselves that allowed the social scum to raise above and ruin all state machineries to the abysmal ends. Today, we dont read many good things about the country. Once upon a time, it was the best place Germans AND other europeans to make their holidays, has now become a criminal state where state thugs promote all inhuman deals undermining all the human values. Killing and torture have been just like having a cup of tea for them. They dont even bother to focus on any kind of harms being made to own folks. Today, if you google putting SRILANKA, most what you get to read are akin to those of Syria, former Lybria, Irak or even Myanmar. NO signs at all making genuine efforts on the peace issues- sustainable peace initiative can only be achieved through real reconciliation. If latter to be allowed, there should be justice prevailing environment. They loot almost everything from the nation to build up physical structures but paying blind eye continuously to nation building. People thought and very much hoped- following Nothern elections, things would turn its way better for reconciliation – what have they achieved sofar since the election is over with the newly elected tamil leader as their representative ?
