Namal Rajapaksa’s staff member Kelum Priyankara is the mastermind behind a massive fake news operation targeting SLPP’s political opponents, Colombo Telegraph can reveal.
Kelum Priyankara holds the official title of media coordinator to Namal Rajapaksa the MP from Hambantota. His uncle Gotabaya Rajapaksa is running for president in the November 16 election.
Priyankara is the originator of a series of fake news posts claiming UNF candidate Sajith Premadasa slaughtered seven pregnant elephants in Habarana to fulfill a vow after he won the candidacy of the UNP.
On Thursday (10) soon after Premadasa’s rally at Galle Face, Priyankara circulated images on Facebook claiming that a man standing behind the UNP candidate was Dr Shafi who performed sterilisations. The same post also ridiculed Premadasa for being childless.
The young MP from Hambantota prides himself on a cosmopolitan outlook and regularly chastises the UNP and other parties for spreading fake news and misinformation. However, one of the biggest generators of misinformation is a well-entrenched staff member within his own fold.

Kelum Priyankara was once also questioned by the Criminal Investigation Department over a complaint made by UNP MP Gayantha Karunatilleka, also on the grounds that he spread fake news about Karunatilleka putting promotional labels on flood relief items. However to date he remains a member of Namal Rajapaksa’s staff.

One man says if elected he will work 365/24. People say this time a comedian is contesting from the slave government;s side.
Other one says he will give fertilizer free of charge. Surely he doesn;t live in Sri Lanka otherwise he should have known that many consumers now prefer organic rice and also a larger number of farmers have voluntarily opted for chemical-fertilizer-free farming.
Moreover, he says that he will write off farmers; debt. What will happen? Farmers will go and obtain more loans. These are cheap election promises of someone who has no ability to feel the pulse of rural masses.
Both these contenders are unable to impress voters with their future plans. The reason is they have no practical plans for the country. They both use age old political tactics to woo voters which will not work out this time as the masses are very much ahead of politicians.
