Namal’s Stewardess’ ‘Unelected’ Union Exposes SriLankan Airlines Fraud

Namal Rajapaksa’s stewardess girl’s ‘unelected’ group of cabin crew union members, having sent a letter of demand to the airline’s management have gone on to expose a financial fraud that the national carrier has been guilty of, Colombo Telegraph can reveal today.

Assistant Secretary Senanaya

Assistant Secretary Senanaya

The letter of demand sent by Assistant Secretary Nithya Senanaya Samaranayaka and her team without the consent or knowledge of its 1082 strong membership, is that the airline has not paid the crew Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and Employee Trust Fund (ETF) for meal allowances earned since its inception.

In their quest to prove that the airline had deprived the crew of EPF /ETF on meal allowances received both internationally and locally, they have highlighted that the airline has made payments to its staff in the billions and neglected to make it known to the treasury.

A present day crew member’s meal allowance earnings on overseas flights is approximately US $ 1000.

This is not been reflected as earnings in their official monthly salary.

Further the claim also goes on to expose a far more serious fraud where meal allowances earned for turnaround flights are converted to the rupee equivalent and paid separately along with their salary.

This payment too is untaxed and paid in violation of Inland Revenue statutes.

A senior manager of the airline speaking on condition of anonymity, as he is not permitted to speak to the media confirmed that the letter of demand had been received by the airline’s management.

“This claim which runs into the billions will seal the fate of the airline and cost the near 6800 employees their jobs.” the senior manager went on to say.

Others who have benefitted from this arrangement such as the airline’s pilots and engineers have now been caught off guard too by this demand.

Colombo Telegraph can confirm that an unofficial meeting took place between the airline’s Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Suren Ratwatte and the ‘unelected’ FAU committee yesterday. The CEO scoffed at the genuineness of their representation and told them to furnish proof of their legitimacy if they wished to meet him officially.

“What seems alarming now is that in spite of the yahapalanaya government crying foul to the charges of the previous Rajapaksa regime, it is the very same Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe government who have being towing the same line depriving the treasury of its much needed revenue” an aviation observer said .

The ‘unelected’ group of cabin crew union members who have called for an Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) today at the BMICH commencing 3pm comprise of:

President – Adrian Cramer
Vice President – Dion Jansz / Warren Hendricks
Secretary – Lanka Kamalgoda
Assistant Secretary – Nithya Senanaya Samaranayaka
Treasurer – Elseworth Weerasinghe
Assistant Treasurer – Andre Wood
Cabin Manager Representative – Jeremy Misso / Saranga Galahitiyawa
Cabin Supervisor Representative – Asela Hapugalle / Sanoli Alawatte
Flight Stewardess Representative – Dharini Denipitiya / Denushka Weerapperuma
Flight Steward Representative – Bevin De Silva / Prabodha Abeysinghe
Instructor Representative – Rohindra Abeysekara

Most countries, other than the very poorest, want to have an Airline for purposes of prestige.

However, it looks as though, from the very inception of “Air Lanka” later to become “Sri Lankan Airlines” this sort of thing has been worse for our “common man” than in most countries. I don’t think that the old “Air Ceylon” was so bad.

Things have obviously been at their worst under Rajapaksa’s brother-in-law. “Scrap the airline” may soon become the chant of the people, but it would obviously be better if we did at last perform a miracle and run the airline well. Perhaps, the tardiness of the authorities has given these people rope to hang themselves with.

I saw this article at 3.00 p.m. – exactly the time at which they are to begin the “Extra-ordinary General Meeting”. Let’s hope that ALL the members (who, I’m sure include decent people) turn up. Sri Lanka is indeed a paradise; unfortunately the average persons here rarely assert themselves.

Allowance is NOT earnings. They might as well could have been provided the food and accommodation, but allowance is for convenience.

“This payment too is untaxed and paid in violation of Inland Revenue statutes.”

      Don’t know about that.

Were the Gayabaya Rajapakksa White Van and the other killings in violation of the statues?

      Very interesting.

You are exactly right. First of all, no one can be authorised to arbitrarily send a letter of demand on behalf of their union without the actual participation of its members. Secondly, she is totally bonkers accusing the management of fraud as these payments are not earnings and not liable to tax.

Said the Ass-Sec to the CEO,
“Do you see what they’ve done?
Way up high, way up in the sky,
There has been some fiddling going on
And on the ground some funny business too.

Said the CEO to the Ass-Sec,
“Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, a Monara
Do you hear what I hear?
An unelected bird spreading lots of shit
With a voice as big as the sea,
With a voice as big as the sea.”

Said the Ass-Sec to the mighty king,
“I will tell all what I know?
In your palace walls, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
We will bring this mighty airline down
Just give us silver and gold,
    Just gives silver and gold.”

Looks like the union has a pretty strong case.

All fixed allowances are entitled to EPF and ETF.

Unless the airline paid it as a reimbursement, they are liable to pay EPF and ETF.

What was the Hhr and hof were doing all these time? Sleeping? Well Hhr of course sleeps around is a public secret (with the dulari dahanayaka the hr manager planning and analytics- overnight promotion for the sake of pleasure, the same way she was with s p mohan head over heals) however how come hof the decent man being blind? Or purposely blind? Well Hhr is purposely blind for so many issues of the organization for his own benefit. Wonder why the rascal is still there when there is a executive Hr director to look after the airlines’ Hr matters… Of course this director has more sense and more people skills than the blood sucking, womanizing kekulawala who was the pimp for former chairman….

Oops, didn’t they (the union) figure out that their members too will have to pay 10% contribution in retrospect while the airline pays 15% for EPF and 3% for ETF. While the government which funds the airline has no issue in paying this, the issue will be to dig into the savings of those union members’ savings and make a lump sum payment equal to 10% of what they have received so far. Also government can claim back-taxes (income) for meal allowances paid then- @24% of the meal allowances upto this year. So this must be a yahapalanaya trick, government gains 24%, pays out 18% (who is in profit?)

Meal allowance given for airline staff during foreign travel is not entitled for EPF/ETF. As it is not a perk for the employee, but a mandatory facility provided while they are on duty in overseas.

In that case, do they say they are entitled for EPF/ETF for the hotel room charges/transportation costs spent on them during their stay overseas.

Poor guys, just because they got the money in hand they are making these EPF/ETF claims. If they were given the money for the hotel stay in overseas, they would claim it for that too.

I sincerely, hope they will not claim EPF/ETF for the cost of airline travelling they are making on duty.

No matter which way you look at this unneeded airline, all that we see is corruption and mismanagement.

How much foolish can the citizenry of a country be.

This monolith is bleeding the country dry since its inception. Just because its pilots are smartly dressed and the stewardesses are specially cute and the politicians can take all and sundry on countless free journeys, this is not good enough reason to keep it flying when the money can be used to rebuild schools and hospitals which are in dire straits.

Scrap it. It can be done.

The idiots thought they can pull a fast one and ended up with pooh all over them selves. This is called poetic justice. It also exposes the level of intelligence of these morons. I honestly don’t understand what RW and MS think they are doing by allowing this type of robbery of tax payer money used to pay these scoundrels exorbitant salaries and perks on top of it think they are doing. What kind of nit wit thinks they can demand EPF and ETF on a tax free allowance! Are we to fly with this type of greedy stupid scoundrels as our stewards and stewardesses.

Who is this “aviation observer” ? Obviously another name for a damn fool, who doesn’t realize who has been running the airline for the last 10 + years.

Really CT, the immaturity with which you pursue your personal agendas and witch hunts, loses you whatever little credibility you gain.

Aney don’t insult me Manori. I am a very decent woman who became a grade 9 manager after being senior executive for two years. Only because I have a mba… I don’t know how to analyze but my kekul help me analyse everything including my family for me… He has taught me how to run a peaceful Homefront just the way he does. Well once in a while me and kakula escape to our own paradise in ratmalana and dehiwala, but not in office. I should thank Buddhika manage for assisting our pleasure hunts… She is simply amazing. Aneyy but don’t scold kekula. He is so sweet. My kuchi buchi… He has been my strength, my shoulder to cry and my pillow to hang on when I am away from my hubby. Kekula is so u see standing. When he talk I just get lost. Don’t talk bad about him please because he has never broken any marriages but knew how to take out the woman and have pleasure by closing the husbands eyes… We can’t blame him neda…. Such a award winning person…

this seems to be a revenge attack for all the given to her recently.

Anyway privatise the airline and let the new management deal with all this shit. The taxpayers are not benefiting one bit by this airline, only the government offials and their kith and kin.It is like you and me telling the government that they and their kith and kin and relatives are welcome to come and use our kitchen whenever they want at our expense.

This airline is getting into worse Situations by just overlooking main issues and filling up key positions with massive salaries, again with taxpayers money.RW and Kabir H, must soon realize their best buddies family friends are temporarily filling places with no valid results. All appointments made by Mahinda and Nishantha W are still exists.Soon there will be another management and its the Middle managers, executives have to shift change and amend processes. The contract staff appointed by Mahinda are also being made permanent even with appalling performance.
