Navy Commander Attacked Journalist On Human Rights Day

Employees of the Hambantota Port and journalists covering a protest were attacked while Human Rights activists around the world were celebrating the Human Rights Day.

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne has been accused of attacking journalist Dileep Roshan Gunasekera. The journalist was reporting the tense situation at the Hambantota Port yesterday.

Employees of the Magampura Port Management Company launched a protest a few days ago demanding that they be recruited to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Navy hierarchy get abused and chased away from the public stage by Muslims in the east.

Neither navy nor the Army can even venture in to town without the permission of the one time LTTE political wing the Vellala TNA permission.

In fact it’s Leader Mr Sambnadan forced himself in to an Army Camp in the old LTTE capital Killinochchi.

And the poor Army was Forced make him Tea.

In contrast our Yoing Sinhala Jour nalists get abused in filth and bashed by the same Navy , when they are doing their job of reporting on PM Batalanad.s E conomic Development Plan.

    That is Yahapalanaya,

Didn’t,t Batalanada say in parliament that he can fight back , when the young Journos in De raraj gave him. a hard time?,

Was the chief of sea patriotism trying to strangulate the journalist with a bare hand neck snap, sort of public execution?

Does his wife share the same bed with him?

Is there any connection between this thug’s wealth welfare and Chinese interests in this island?

        Dear Native,

He looks a bit like your hero Soosai who piloted the LTTE Navy craft himself , all the way to Oslo with Stanislaus and Adele on board.

May be he is now ready to do the same if Abraham and Co need any help..

“He looks a bit like your hero Soosai who piloted the LTTE Navy craft himself , all the way to Oslo with Stanislaus and Adele on board.”

          He dropped him in Thailand.

While Soosai was sailing his ship to Thailand with a high-value target, what was Ravindra Wijegunaratne (the thug in uniform) doing in his ship?

By the way, did he have any business connection with Namal who once known to have operated a passenger service to Australia, through silk route?

          Let me know.

          Sumane,

UNPers appears to be comfortable in the window seat and watching. You go ahead and occupy the aisle and carry out the Act.

Port is yours; management company is yours; rioting employees yours; whipping navy is yours; As you are dying hard to support a journalist first time, he too appears to be yours. So the Act is complete only if you occupy the aisle seat and conduct the comments on this thread.

          Well wishes for your success!

Now Hindia may be planning to sneak into the island through the South because China shows lot of interests in this island.

Do you have any information on this matter of importance?

“These comments are very serious if true and if not, CT must not publish.”

The fact is that the assault is very very very serious matter. You should focus on the actual disgraceful behaviour of the officer and a thug than on comments from concerned people.

“CT must check the authenticity of the comments you get.”

Why should the CT introduce self censorship when the officer himself has behaved in a commendable manner?

You should request the CT to investigate this thug’s behaviours, during his service in the navy for the past 36 years.

first thing is Politicians should not involve in these and big mouth politicians should make news issues supporting journlsits.

Is this the Navy Commander that look like Captain Haddock, best friend of Tintin?

The guy started yet another special forces unit, The Marines, when the Navy already has the SBS (Special Boat Squadron).

It seems Sri Lankan defense has no strategic direction with anything. The air force is trying to purchase a fleet of fighter jets. Who is the conventional foe SL is planning to defend against? Maldives??

Whether is internal or external conflict, the only advantage Sri Lanka has is on the ground.

Air and Naval assets will be obliterated within days if its an external foe. It will take years before an internal enemy establish their own FDL when jet fighters become a necessity.

Sri Lanka only needs land forces – infantry. Naval and air assets should all be geared as a support role for the infantry.

When a conventional foe lands, the infantry uses the home ground advantage for a war of attrition. When its an internal foe the infantry uses its numbers to wear it down.

The entire military should be small, agile and nimble. It should all be small teams that co-ordinate and engage like a swam of soldier bees in a hive.

All men and women should be equipped with the best weapons and technology. It should have an excellent communications network, with surveillance and intelligence gathering capabilities.

If you want it done, give it to me. I will make an army that can beat anyone in their own game.

Will the so called Navy commander have the same guts to attack a pro tiger sympathaizer (not an innocent tamil) in the North without peeing in his pants….?

Where were these Yahapalana military commanders now in in full swing on international human rights day, hiding a fortnight ago on 27 November when the tiger rump was openly celebrating pirapaharan’s b’day in the North?

Count my word. This naval buffoon will go scot free with the blessings of the prime suspect of the bond scam, thanks to yamapalana. What more evidence do you want to prove shameful wrong doing?

      Good question.

Where were they when JVP rump remembering their fallen heroes every year since mid 1990s. By the way, where were they when IPKF forced itself on this island in 1987, and stayed here for more than two years?

Actually, they were hiding behind VP’s bump supplying him arms and ammunition and much-needed medicine.

By the way, they were too busy killing innocent youth in the south.

What a shame… However, when this thug, SL Navy Commander, writes a book on how he helped to execute bad people ( mainly our Tamil brothers judged and executed by these thugs), our fellow SB countrymen would lined up and buy the book like “Unu Kawum” and this thug would be rich…
Army General Kamlal Gunaratne’s book about on how he killed our fellow “bad Tamil” countrymen, sold more than Malalasekara’s English-Sinhalese dictionary sales in the last 70 years, in one week.

There is no point lamenting that the Sri Lankan Navy Commander attacked a journalist on world Human Rights Day. There will be no relief for that poor victim Sri Lankan journalist who was there only to do his job of reporting the news to the world.

It should be obvious to everyone in Sri Lanka and to all human rights organisations throughout the world now that Sri Lankan service personnel whether they are from the Army, Navy, Air Force or Police are all above the law, not just the human rights law. No one could dare to touch them. They are all sacred cows.

Serious war crimes, crimes against humanity and various other human rights violations were committed by the Sri Lankan service personnel during the final stages of the Eelam war. Despite two UN Human Rights Council resolutions no action has been taken against any service personnel until now though the war ended in May 2009.

Practically there is no difference between the Rajapakse government and the present Ranil-Sirisena government.

      Hi Naga,

There is some TRUTH about the crimes committed by service personnel against innocent civilians during the final stages of the Ealam war, but this is about a crime committed by civilians amounting to “piracy”. Why won’t you focus on the bigger picture? Are all journalist “babes in the wood”? Isn’t it apparent to you that there is a political hand in this strike and the journalist had no business getting into the midst of the strikers? He was asking for trouble and he got it. There is no point in whining after overstepping the line and crying “media” as if the “media” is vested with super powers to do what they want including influencing the public with the stories that they spin at their whim and fancy.

“There is some TRUTH about the crimes committed by service personnel against innocent civilians during the final stages of the Ealam war, but this is about a crime committed by civilians amounting to “piracy”

Oh dear me, the armed forces and police were at it since 1981 not just during the last stages of the Eelam war.

The gentle thug assaulted a journalist who was only doing his job.

” Why won’t you focus on the bigger picture?”

Have you closely observed the clip, the thug almost killed the journalist with his bare hand neck snap?

        What is the bigger picture?

The right question you should ask is what made the thug to rage and attempt to kill a journalist. That is the bigger picture. Did anyone or interested party promise him a large Santhosam?

“Isn’t it apparent to you that there is a political hand in this strike and the journalist had no business getting into the midst of the strikers?”

My next door neighbour’s 10-year old son knows better.

“You are shedding crocodile tears for the slapped journalist but cares nothing about the arbitrary seizure of private property.”

If you read my comments again again and again you would note my concern is about the journalist who has nothing to do with “arbitrary seizure of property”.

Don’t side step from the main issue which is the behaviour of the Top Navy commander and how he was about to break the journalist with his “bare arm neck snap”.

You should be proud of the journalists who throw themselves in unknown danger to bring us what has been wrong with this island. If the thug thought the journalist was over stepping his limits he should have had him arrested and charged him at the courts.

Remember we are not living in medieval times. Did you find the thug’s behaviour fascinating, just like Mervyn Silva’s antics?

Rest assured I don’t hesitate to shed crocodile tears when I see injustice are being meted out to people who has no recourse to justice.

Any of his illegal conduct has to dealt in court of law, not with the hands of Rapist army-Navy. Don’t plead one more time for impunity. The scene looks like the movie of Eraj in Old Royals time. “Navy Commander Attacked Journalist On Human Rights Day”,

Very good move! This is exactly what has been lacking in Sri Lanka after the new government was formed. Every Tom Dick and Harry was full time abusing the new found freedom and obstructing day today activities, violating the human rights of ordinary citizens and obstructing the progress of the government and civil activities. I recommend the Police and Army too adopt this method in future to control the anarchy that is pervading in the country schemed by Rajapaksha thieves. I am reminded of the astuteness and foresight of late great JR Jayawardena who crushed such sabotaging strikes at the very 1st occurrence thereby ensuring at least the present developed state of the country. If this utter chaotic state continues in the country further no investor will come to this country and we all will be living in another Ethiopia very soon! The motherfuckers who are behind these senseless logicless sabotage efforts do not ever raise any valid questions such as, for example, what is the practical plan to develop Hampanthota port without Chinese aids, what industries and will Chinese bring in environmentally harmful industries, are Chinese people going to be employed in those factories, air pollution, water pollution etc. and a whole gamut of related issues. These are the topics the whole country should be discussing by now and sorting out. But alas! The whole gang of motherfuckers in the country are running after trivial vanities with heightened egocentric mania! Judging by the moronic outlook and appearance of the donkys in the country I think it is better to give this country to Chinese who are hardworking, creative and initiative. God save this unfortunate country of buffalos!

      Are you being sarcastic?

Whose interest does this Officer and a thug serve?

JR had Cyril Mathew and his thugs (JSS) to put down all legitimate strikes (grievances of the workers) and burn down Jaffna Library.

If these are the sort of disgraceful actions you want to encourage and justify, then of course you should fight for your right (as you see it) to abolish constitution, all laws and human decency, install a dictatorship.

Would you recommend the constitution drafting committee to change the country’s official name from “Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka” to Dictatorship of the Lumpen Officers?

      Good comment!
The strikers had no business to seize vessels at the Hambantota Port. If they had struck work, why did they seize vessels? It was pure intimidation. Obviously, controlled by a hidden hand. The Hiru Journalist had no business to get into the midst of the strikers and confront the Navy when they were struggling to control the situation. Hiru is owned and controlled by Duminda Silva’s brother Ranynor. It supports the JO and the way the Hiru Journalist provoked the Navy Commander it appears to be well planned. It is no surprise that he received such treatment at the hands of the Navy Commander. He must be thankful that it was only a shove and a push with a scolding under the Yahapalanaya regime. Had it been the former, he would be dead by now, or spirited away in a white van!

The media must be impartial in their reporting and in their investigations. If they come to a scene with a pre-planned story, then they are just prostituting journalism. The media has the incredible power of influencing and shaping peoples’ minds. This story of the journalist being attacked by the Navy Commander, is targeted to create sympathy towards the journalist and anger at the government. The bigger picture should have been the strikers illegally seizing the vessels as that has tarnished the image of the country.

I am surprised that the media had not thought it fit to report the seizure which amounts to “piracy” as stated by the Minister. It is much more serious than shoving a journalist. The entire country should know the extent to which the workers are being used as pawns by political opportunists. I hope the Police files action against those who seized the vessels under the criminal laws of this country.

“Navy Commander Attacked Journalist On Human Rights Day”

Unlike gutless Ranil and Sirisena, at least some one had the guts to put his foot down and stop this nonsense.

The functioning of the country and the disruption of traffic cannot be allowed on a daily basis.

I say, the navy commander for president!

Line up all the politicians and just shoot them.

They have had their entire life-time to put things right but they haven’t. You have to be a Lankans to believe they’ll change.

Attacking the journalist is a collateral damage. However, a Navy Commander Vice Admiral’s presence on the scene is necessary is a question, let alone how he reacted.

On the other hand, I would say the Navy has done the right thing to chase away those fake protestors organised by MR with the strategic intention to disrupt and tarnish country’s peace and image day by day.

After all, someone got to do the job!

Wait for your turn to be at the receiving end. There will be justifications.

      • 3
        1

And did you know that we, the people on a daily basis at the receiving end collectively, and will continue to be at the receiving end if we entertain these sorts of protests and strikes?

Looks like you are a rich kid who was not at the receiving end when there were private bus strike and the government hospital doctors strike recently?

A journalist getting attacked is not right, but look at the bigger picture. Now striking has become an everyday thing for anything, everything, anywhere or everywhere. No doubts, soon SL will be called ‘nation of strikes’ whether ‘Wonder of Asia’ becomes a reality or not.

While PM keeps silent and Prez is always willing to entertain these further with wasting his valuable time taking these thuggish mannerisms to the discussion, who will save us from these hooligans?

This navy commander must first loose some weight!

But what is important is for the GOSL to address issues. These are HUMAN problems and we are duty-bound to address them and resolve them.

Can we know what the real problem is and how the GOSL intends to resolve it? Lives and livelihoods are at risk.

      kumaran,

These protestors are the very same people who attached visiting MPs when Rajapaksahas were in power! What an irony of fate! Now it is the turn of those who suffered at their hands at that time and I think the government is serious in teaching them a lesson on parliamentary privileges!

Very true Dealdasa agree with your comments. These protesters dont have any decency and they strike at the drop of a hat and now the media coolies will twist and turn things the way JO wants. Well done navy Commander thats how protesting should be handled. Both PM and Executive in sleep mode!

The journalist was only recording the actions of the navy in resolving the unlawful act of the strikers holding a ship hostage.
The navy commander acted like a common thug without any provocation.
In any other democracy, he would have been relieved of command and subjected to court martial.

The military have got away with injustices in the north and east during and after the war and find it difficult to now function with restraint as befits a nation committed to democratic governance.

“Next go after the rest of the protesters at fort railway station and lipton circus.”

Navy – The branch of the armed services of a state which conducts military operations at sea.

The definition is clear, Navi is not meant to go after or against the working men and women. The workers have right to protest to win their dues or what is rightfully theirs, peacefully of course.

If there is disorder let the police deal with them, not the war criminals.

The Navy has other useful national duties to perform, go after sea pirates, poachers, and smugglers. Tell us how successful the Navy has been in the last 7 years.

This is an extremely brutal act. Navy Commander’s behaviour is extremely inappropriate. He is applying brutal force and language to unarmed civilian protestors. He should have used his brain and delegated to disperse this protesting employees to a much junior officer or the area commander.

I have lived and worked in developed English speaking countries. I have never seen an army or navy commander behaving in this manner. If this happened in a country like Australia, USA or UK, the following day, the navy commander will be sent home.

I think this particular commander is sitting on his brain instead of using of it.

The real issue the present government does not a clear vision for the economic development of the country, which is favourable to the country.

The selling or leasing out this harbour to a Chinese Company is a national crime. They are selling a national resource, which could be developed for the benefit of the future generations of this country.

Yahapalanaya boot lickers are commending this brutal act.

Don’t even talk about the economy no tangible developments at all,no job creation for youngsters, corruption everywhere, one time respectable profession and purely service orientation but now its like old ports authority union bring it to standsill and the authority to be on the knees,

Disgraceful behaviour of the Navy Commander. Don’t these fellows have any dignity or decorum. Worse than street thugs.

Media personnel or otherwise .We have heard of third degree treatment of witnesses or pathetic humans at cop shops by lowly constables .., but this is just not called for .Or is this the conditioning of the mind of the forces to use bully boy tactics to get people into submission .Pity his family when he is in this mental condition of power and rage .We are happy that a serious crime did not happen and it was not curtains down for this guy anyone in that area when someone of this physique is on the rampage .

The Navy commander’s behavior is now a political issue to CT Chitanta gang. From their comments it is apparent they feel it is an opportunity that cannot be missed. Of cause they did very well on CBG Emil Mahendran case, Sagala Ratnayake’s phone call case and they are doing well on this too. In the first two cases it’s UNP’s fault. Here what happened is so far not yet clear. It appears like Koliyum Unkanrai- Pulumgalum Ungknrai. The Paddy is theirs and the hen eating is also theirs. They would not welcome you chasing away the hen if it destroy the paddy. It may indicate that it doesn’t need UNP’s or others’ talks in that.

Everybody knows the Port is a white elephant project that trumpets the Old Royals’ commission reaping excellence. UNP came to power by promising resolving these loans interest problems. Everybody’s first thought was a negotiation with or legal actions against China’s unfaithful deals. But UNP has further clawed into it. The Port deal is not going alone for sale of to China. It is locked with a massive land sale to China too. Chitanata people do not like the sale. It is not because they are losing the sovereignty on the part of the land. Those cardboard weeraya’s patriotism is nothing but Cardboard Patriotism too. Two elements are hurting them. First is if UNP makes the sales they lose the chance of earning commission on it. So they would prefer UNP pay the interest until they take over power and then they will sell it like the way they did the Port City land sales. You know when the Port City was sold No protesters were on the beach and No navy was beating them. Second is their pride is being hurt when UNP is telling that it is selling because the of the loan interest. We yet to know who the Magampura Port Management Company is and how did it got the contract to service Hambantota Port. But there is little doubt about it is Chitanta Company and employs Chitanta acolytes. So they are not going against the company, but against the Port Authority. Now their contention is Port Authority property is UNP’s property. So they would like to play the devil thovil on that.
This navy was formed under the Chitanta policies. The commander cannot allow Journalist to witness the operations of his subordinates carry out.

We don’t know if the Journalist is a Chitanata Laptop journalist. He though clearly identified that he is a journalist, but did not attempt to back off to protect him. He rather moved straight to face the rowdy, who was advancing to attack him. If he was looking for an encounter he has to be also categorized a Chitanta Journalist.

In any case he is a journalist. The free world would expect him to be treated one like that. So, UNP must have envisaged this type of marketing attempts and should have employed government photographers-videographers on the site.

Journalists should shy away from the notion that I am lord of all i survey and therefore be immune for criticism as they hold the whip hand for the final say.Even the media will not criticise journalists as they are their plaything and if you write against a journalist for any blunder it will never see the light of day in the air waves or columns.
Journalists in the main stream media who hold a responsible task of spelling out the truth and media ethics should tread carefully or otherwise the public will decry against their outbursts and turn against them as evidenced by the stupendous rise of access to the Social media to discern the facts

Navy is trained for controlling crowds in the lands. Even though this happened in the port, it is related to crowd controlling in the land. STF would have been the best.

therefore, who ever the minister who wanted to show the might of the govt by sending NAVY should resign if this case continue.

Because, Journalists may be acting here for a case like this.

the best treatment would have been in the middle of this commotion pushing some journalists and protesters to the water and keep some boats ready to save them when they are really drowning.

govt involvement is bad and stupid politics. Sending country day by day to anarchy and it is simply dumb politicians ruining the country.

Is this Soosai look alike , Navy Chief trying to get browned points from Batlanda Ranil.?.

The great Armed Forces which liberated the Nation are in deep depression, for obvious reasons.

Bodhi Sira helped Batalanda Ranil to cull the great Soldiers who got rid of the Tamil Terrorists.

Batalanada even framed bogus charges against hem,

Bodhi Sira then appointed weaklings who were just passengers to lead the armed Forces, again for obvious reasons.

This is a classic example of the class of officers now.

Defence Sec who is. Bodhi Sira,s supervisor didn’t,t. Even know that this dude was in Hambantota.

Now he wants to know why the fat belly got there , and who gave him the. Orders.

And it is none other. Than Batalanada.s nephew the Defence Minister,

Wonder whether the fat belly called Batalana,s nephew. Sir too, like the UNP IGP after getting orders to bend the Law from the Police. minister Sagala..

    KASmaalam

    Read this excerpt:

Navy chief in hot water after assaulting journalist
    Dec 12, 2016

    …..
    ….
Official sources said the vice admiral had already earned the displeasure of the authorities after he joined ranks with former air force chief Gagan Bulathsinhala in calling an unprecedented boycott of the eastern province chief minister in May this year.

The then air force chief Bulathsinhala was not given an extension despite his attempts to secure one through his personal friend and defence secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi.

Official sources close to the president said Hettiarachchi also fell out of grace and was currently on borrowed time after he sided with Bulathsinhala and Wijegunaratne.

Army chief Crishanthe de Silva who remained neutral over the eastern chief minister Z.A. Nazeer Ahamed’s issue received a one-year service extension.

The political establishment saw the boycott of a chief minister called by service chief’s as setting a dangerous precedent and President Maithripala Sirisena immediately intervened to revoke the ban announced by Hettiarachchi. (COLOMBO, Dec 11, 2016)

When I saw the incriminating video, i gasped “Surely not”. Is this the much-decorated Vice Admiral of our heroic ‘well balanced and cohesive’ navy, moving like a dump truck with a flat tyre? Luckily, the object of his attention was a puny journalist with nothing but a pen to defend himself. It was a no contest on the quayside but the jury in the real world is, I see, still undecided.

Vice Admiral PotBellyinshorts reminds me of Major-General Stanley; and I paraphrase the last lines of that well known song written by W S Gilbert

For my military knowledge, though I’m plucky and adventury,
    Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Vice Admiral..

Now we mere mortals get an idea of what hand-to-hand combat is like. Note carefully that our very modern vice admiral went for the hack knowing a) the journalist was small, b) unarmed, c) the journalist had nowhere to run.

Our thoughts must be with Vice-Admiral PotBellyinshorts. When that red mist descended, he just went for it, and in the ensuing argy-bargy, our onetime national hero lost his dignity. Moreover, we who have been constantly fed stories of the ‘gallantry and discipline’ of our fighting men, now have yet more proof that ‘things ain;t necessarily so’.

Never mind, all this will be wiped clean by our ‘shape-machan-palanaya’. No charges, No demotion (but promotion guaranteed). The medals are safe. Definitely no international tribunal.

Our bathtub navika hamudawa will sail away into the sunset with the hewisi band striking up a catchy chune of ‘life on the ocean wave’.

ps: What does the Vice in Vice-Admiral stand for? ie What Vice does VICE-Admiral PotBellyinshorts have to deserve this title?
