New Central Bank Chief Indrajit Coomaraswamy Says He Will Fear No One

While emphasizing the need for integrity in leadership, new Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy has declared that he will fear no one while discharging his duties.

Indrajit Coomaraswamy

Addressing the staff of the bank today, soon after assuming duties as the 14th Governor, Coomaraswamy said, “During my meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena, he told me ‘do your work in a straight way, and do not fear anyone in discharging your duties’,” Coomaraswamy said.

“Now my intention is to follow his direction and carry out my functions according to his wishes,” the new Governor who accepted his letter of appointment from President Sirisena today morning said.

He also disclosed that during a meeting with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Premier had outlined his vision for Sri Lanka. “There is a big role for the Central Bank to play in helping realize this vision,” he said.

Coomaraswamy noted that it was the Central Bank’s responsibility to help create a platform for macro-economic stability with strong macro-economic fundamentals, which will pave the way for financial sector stability.

“I genuinely believe that nothing else will take off, if we don’t fulfill our functions well. We have a big responsibility,” he said.

Coomaraswamy also called on his staff to work as one. “I need the cooperation of each and every one. We need to have a common objective. Not all of us are going to be fond of each other, but we need to be professional enough to put those differences aside and achieve our common objective,” he said.

He also specified three concepts; integrity, technical excellence and professionalism, as the guiding principles for him and the staff to move forward.

“And, if any of you think I am not living up to those principles, please find a way of getting that message to the 15th floor (Office of the Governor). Because, in terms of leadership, it’s important that I set the example. I will do my best, and if there are shortcomings, I would like to hear about it. I also want to encourage a culture of discussion, openness, debate,” Coomaraswamy added ( By Munza Mushtaq © Colombo Telegraph)

I really dont think – that everything will be clean just because the new guys is appointed. This is srilanka.. good old business will go forward.

Yes, it is a team work.. as one commentator added – a pigeon with cats- not the other way around.

I agree with you completely. I heard the new Central Bank Governor’s speech, but can he accomplish his ideas by changing the ideology of the politicians and the people? The answer is remain to be seen. In his speech he mentioned that team captain will do well as long as the team perform well. It applies to political leaders as well. The leaders come from the community, they don’t fall from the sky. When the community is corrupted and foolish, so do the politicians.

He said that he is going to focus on macro economics. However, Sri Lankans don’t know what is macro economics. They want free education, free health care and want government job to do little at work with job security and pension. In Singapore you don’t get it free. Singaporean leaders teach their people to catch fish. But Sri Lankan leaders give fish to people to eat to get votes, by doing so the leaders are making people lazy and country is becoming poor.

Ask any young Sri Lankan who is currently studying A/L or university degree whether he/she knows about his/her rights at a private company as an employee. Last Sunday at the Jaffna Library I asked more than 20 students about their employment rights, but they all are clueless. The funniest thing is this fools want a separate country to govern.

        Antany Peter,

You call those 20 students fools for not knowing their rights in a private company as employees:

It is a stupid question to ask the students. They are focusing on studying and passing the exams for further progress or a degree before they can even think of a job. At this point they are not even sure if they will get a job when they pass the exams or graduate eventually, let alone think about their rights in a private company.

Don’t call the young students at the Jaffna Library fools, you are the fool who can’t even write a sentence in English properly: You write; “The funniest thing is this fools want a separate country to govern. “

Did they tell you that they want a separate country to govern? Don’t make a fool of yourself by writing silly things!

IC is a fair appointment, but it should have been Dr. Raghuram Rajan!

To restore the reputation of Central Bank JUSTICE must be done and SEEN TO BE DONE. Central bank must be cleaned up and those responsible for insider trading and EPF and ETF loses and currency manipulation held ACCOUNTABLE and PROSECUTED.

1.Mahendran and Cabraal must be held accountable to ensure FUTURE Accountability of CB governors and ensure that never again will this kind of looting of the national economy happen at the Central Bank. Civil society should ask for the assets of Mahendran and Nivard Cabraall to be frozen and Perpetual Treasuries investigated. A full investigation of Mahendran and Nivard Cabraal and their bond scams, insider trading and currency manipulations is necessary. It is not enough to simply ask that Mahendran’s contract has ended – and let him off to go and live the high life on his ill gotten gains in Singapore!

          2. Instead of following IMF’s con advice, which is pushing Lanka into GREATER DEBT, the priority should be CORRUPTION INVESTIGATION into Panama Papers names to trace all the funds looted from Sri Lanka in off shore accounts to pay off the NATIONAL DEBT.

          3. Civil society needs to push for a Road MAP from the Central Bank on Corruption investigations to trace and recover funds looted from Sri Lanka by Politicians, their cronies and associated businesses and held in Off Shore accounts. However, Coomaraswamy’s friends like Balendran are mentioned to be holding Panama Papers Accounts. Question is why put funds in Panama when Asia is the growth hub, unless the funds are looted ones and tax avoiding?

Coomaraswamy is an out and out NEOLIBERAL; an insider in the corrupt global financial system. He loves the corrupt IMF and World Bank that has seen massive growth in GLOBAL inequality that is cause for the GREAT CLASS WAR in the world today. Today 63 people own over half the world’s wealth according to OXFAM.

Coomaraswarmy should ask IMF and WB that used to call itself knowledge bank (ha, Ha, Ha), to help trace all the looted funds in off shore accounts, rather than for more loans that add to national DEBT!

Coomaraswamy is famous for turning a blind eye on corruption even though the UN has identified Corruption as a primary driver of economic inequality and poverty. Civil society must be alert and keep pushing for SYSTEMATIC CORRUPTION INVESTIGATIONS and ACCOUNTABILITY and scrutinize the policy from an inequality and poverty perspective.

Clearly, you will continue to keep those young Tamils in dark. Obviously those young Tamils are not prepared well to face the future, but you are not smart enough to see it. No wonder, why you got nothing after three decades of brutal war. People like you are curse for Tamils. You talk on behalf of Tamils without knowing the reality here in Jaffna. I worked for few companies, the directors didn’t provide employment offer letter or appointment letter. One company paid me only 25% of salary for few months. The other company didn’t pay at all. Young people are working for months without getting paid, they are poor so they come to work to get free food. Girls are sexually abused. Tamils have been abused daily by Tamils, but nobody is talking about it, because it is not relevant to the Western or Indian interests.

If Indrajit Coomaraswamy practices what he says his days are numbered in corrupt Sri Lanka:

Dayan Jayatilake has fired the first shot saying Coomaraswamy had associated himself with inside trading convict Rajaratnam, who had contributed to LTTE. Dayan cunningly left out the equal contribution Rajaratnam made to racist Buddhist monks.

I am sure the Sinhala racists will slap LTTE label on Indrajit sooner or later and that will be the beginning of his end.

        Dear Thiru,

        You’ve said:

“I am sure the Sinhala racists will slap LTTE label on Indrajit”

They will, and I have already seen Facebook comments of that sort; but I don’t think that they will succeed. Yesterday, in a most unlikely place, somebody said that Indrajit has a “siriyawantha” (sublime and gracious) appearance.

He has a relatively innocent and trusting “school boy” nature, but I’m sure that he’s no longer naiive. And there are guys like us posting things like this:

I think that we need a bit of the idealism and optimism which I used to always find in his father-in-law, Chandra de Fonseka, until that outstanding human being was reduced to about two years of helplessness by a stroke; followed by cremation at Mt Lavinia, with ashes interred next to his wife in the land that he bought back after his many years abroad.

That is how our human lives pan out; let me wish Indrajit at least six happy years at the Central Bank; years in which we don’t expect miracles, but which may make a huge difference to our grand-children!

Today’s Daily FT (page 17) has an ‘insiders account’ of how the whole saga played out, along with details that could have only been known by someone present at the scene. Check it out if you get a chance.

In the mean time, I and others await your next article on the Thomian saga.

Thanks, Bagehot, for the helpful comments.

Actually, I had already seen the Financial Times article. Please follow the link in my comment above. It will lead you to that article and a few others of the same tenor.

As for the Thomian Saga, I’m still hoping that the third article will not be necessary. On Tuesday next week, the 12th of July, there is to be a meeting of the Board of Governors at Gurutalawa: 10 a.m. till noon. The upgraded swimming pool will then be declared open by the Bishop. This will be followed by lunch with the Old Boys and the Board of Governors mingling.

One has to be realistic in these matters. It is often not even desirable that such controversies should end in victory for the one and defeat for the other. However, if I meet with intransigence, then I will spare no effort to publicise what has been happening. Your comments will then be most welcome. Even as it is, your words give me courage.

            Thank you. I need support.

Who is a racist? Cumaraswsamy was( bossom )friends with Balendran . Cumarasway was the financial adviser to Raj Rajarathnam , fraudster, money launderer and bank roller of LTTE and diaspora.
Cumarawamy’s sister is hand in glove with diaspora andLTTE separatists in Ueupe and Geneva.
In my lexicon a person living in cosmopolitan Colombo, brought up in Colombo among Sinhalese and muslims, yet espousing the cause of separatists is a Racist or an extremist

Cumaraswamy should answer two basic questions:
        1. What his financial connction with the fraudster, Raj Rajarathnam
2 Is Cumaraswamy sympathetic to and associated with Rjarathnam’s Fund raising for LTTE separatists.
        3. His sister was publicly espousing the cause of diaspora for a separate state in the north of this country. Will he disavow her?
We learnt a bitter lesson from the political appointment of his predecessor, Mahendran, who was a close friend of Rajarathnam, the Finance Minister and would you believe it1 the elected Prime Mnister.

Do you have any evidence that Rajaratnam was funding the LTTE? Do you not think, in the massive investigation carried out by the FBI and the New York State that such a connection would have been revealed and Rajaratnam would have been in far more serious trouble than the relatively lenient sentence he got given that the LTTE is a banned terrorist organization in the USA?

People like you who propagate half truths and whole lies based on half-baked news articles you read on facebook are the reason Sri Lanka is in this mess in the first place!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity.
Anton Balasingham. was a close friend of Rajararthnam. Rajarathnam provided all his expenss during his fund raising visits to USA.Rajarathnamwas convicted of money laundering. He ws accused and found guilty of transferring money illegally to other countries including Sri Lanka by the court.
4 billion rupees was transferred to the acounf of Current Minister of Finance (Ravi Karunanayaka) in 2013.
Balendran was a cose friend of Rajararthnam. Balendran os the chief fund raiser for LTTE while Blasinghambeing the strategist of LTTE played a secondary role.
The missing links in this love circle if Mahendran, chikldhood friend of Rajarasthnam and I Coomaraswamy who was so innocent that he did not know that Rajarsthnam amassed his wealth through crooked deal and money laundering.

These are laudable words and exemplary culture in a developed country.
Mr. IC has to come down to earth to deal with the types of Weerawansa, the anti-Tamil, semi-educated street rabble rouser and his variety. Be assured there are a lot of them around. Then there is the ultra-nationalist Sinhala Buddhists of the BBS variety – running riot on the streets with the assurance they cannot be tamed or controlled since they behave as if they own Buddhism and the whole of the island. To compound matters is that there is, in effect, two governments in power. The professional one lead by Ranil with Mangala, CBK, Malik and others in the team commited to lift the country from the morass the Rajapakses inflicted. Then there is the unpredictable President Sirisena – hardly known for consistency – or responsible governance. The moment a few Mananayakas make a noise Maitripala Sirisena, irresolute, will squeak meekly.

Dr. IC will be treated by the Sinhala extreme with the usual He-is-a-Tamil brush meaning, in their twisted view, he cannot be patriotic, efficient or good. The country must recognise the great service his father and sister presented the country with – to Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and the whole lot. The fact the man hardly talks, reads or writes Tamil does not come into the configuration. It is sufficient, in the current culture, to link him with the dreaded LTTE through his
remote association with Raj Rajaratnam, which, of course, is nonsense.

I suspect the man with that enviable family background, ex-CR-SL rugby star, 1st class Cricketer and established Civil Servant may be as tough as they come. He deserves the good wishes of us all to succeed – for his own and the country’s sake – in a task of the utmost import to the country at the current juncture.

    The Vision :

For Sri Lanka to become part of the South Asian conglomerate leaving aside the Ancient Buddhist Heritage of the Common Masses.

For the common man to put aside his natural intellect, and force a new kind of intellect and forced work-style, for the greater Dravidian enterprise of India.

All done via a Royal-Thomanian alumnus of the brandy drinking, football kicking and hugging, international band of crooks, and the creating of algorithms to skew monetary systems, so Ancient Lankan sovereign heritage will be replaced with messy Indian conglomerate; Royal-Thomanian status-quo retained par-excellently.

No!, the more Buddhist the central bank governor, the more honorable it will be towards the little man’s money. And the more that set of international band of crooks will respect and back away from us.

(at least in the EU, the continent was cut up into different countries. And still the British felt threatened by it. Can you imagine the detriment of the South Asian conglomerate vision upon little Egalatarian Buddhist Sri Lanka?!)

“…the more Buddhist the central bank governor, the more honorable it will be towards the little man’s money…” Sheer nonsense. That is the logic and culture of that thug covered in Buddhist Robes – Gnanassara. The Rajapakses, at least outwardly, were as Buddhistic as they come. What did they give you and the country. They robbed you to your knickers.

Your prose suggests you have more than basic education. Do show some learning, girl. It is not whether one is Sinhalese/Tamil Buddhist or other that matters. But immaculate merit. That was the country we had
from the turn of the 19th century to the 1950s. It was false Lankan Buddhism and Majoritarianism that brought us ruin, disunity and conflict.

Good Lord Backlash! From 19th century to the 1950s,
50% Sinhalese Buddhists were beggars on the roads after their lands and livelihoods were taken over by the British for plantations that make the British aristocracy very rich indeed. Thankfully they were resettled by kindly Sinhala governments, who cared about their struggling masses.

Comarasamy might seem to have immaculate merit, but he comes too soon on the heels of Tamil Mahendran screwing us off our money. On top of that, Comarasamy has connections to the LTTE-Raj Rajaratnam Galleon’s group. So, it quite a risk GoSL is taking. And for what reason, we can’t fathom, especially in the light of all the unrest over this.

(hugging footballs can hardly be seen as immaculate merit….hugging trees- now that has chronological heritage connotation….but hugging footballs means hugging the outdated colonial system and forcing it to work, even as the West is trying to reason out a newer world order).

          ramona nutty Fernando

Where were you when the Sinhala-Buddhist Hora – the former Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabral was responsible for awarding Rupees 2.7 Trillion (Rs 2,700,000,000,000) of Treasury Bonds and Bills to “cronies” and “accomplices” of the former government?

Just to remind you few things about the former Central Bank Governor Cabral’s achievements:

Sri Lanka loses $60 million hedging case vs Deutsche Bank A source familiar with MR said Sri Lanka would have to pay Deutsche $60.3 million plus interest for non-payment of dues. Sri Lanka lost Rupees 9 billion due to MR and Cabral’s hedging deal.

Another deal of Cabral, Cabral’s gamble:
Lanka loses billions in bankrupt Greece, A Central Bank investment of about 22 million euros valued at more than Rupees 3.4 billion in Greek Government Bonds will be lost to Sri Lanka due to the acute economic crisis in that country.
The funny thing was taking loans from Chinese banks at high interest, 8% interest and investing in Greek Bonds knowingly Greek economic was in very bad shape. Can you answer, why on earth SL borrowed money from China at the interest rate of 8% and invested in Greek bond to get earning of 7.7%? What do you think? Why were all of your mouths closed and BLIND at that time?

Still nobody has proved Mahendran guilty. Let’s wait for the COPE report and then say if he is a rogue or not and whether he screwed you or not. Indrajit Coomaraswamy is one of the greatest Economists that Sri Lanka has produced during the last 60 odd years. The Coomaraswamys were an immensely powerful Jaffna aristocratic family in Sri Lanka (Colombo 7 Vellalar elites) and to this day, the family continues to be respected across the island and its members continue to hold high positions.

When a Karapotha parangi marries a kavum kana Sinhala racist Karawa Modayass from a remote fishing village in Negombo and settle in Uncle Sam’s Yankee land as a white man’s slave and then talk about Sri Lankan economy and about a non-existent Egalitarian Buddhist Sri Lanka, it sound absolutely hilarious. Indrajit Coomaraswamy was not only an intellectual/scholar and a high profile professional but he was also a great sportsman who excelled in Rugby football and cricket, Karawa village Modayass cannot even dream of such achievements. You better cut the crap and keep licking the white man’s boots and he will throw a few bones at you.

The racist comments become more and more bizarre……beyond caring anyway. But that’s typical of certain Tamils attempting to shame Sinhalese on race and caste. Thank goodness, Sinhalese race has prevailed, in spite of the centuries of perverse psychological racial onslaught by the Tamils. Buddhist egalitarianism and honor has always prevailed. Tamils have time-and-time again attempted to install what they consider their high-caste into our system in an attempt to take over. Sri Lanka will never be hostage to your attempts to create a mini-India on our soil, replete with 90% low-castes that you force your people to be.

Rajapaksas’ economic system was a sophisticated overarching network. However, their over-ambition did not sit too well with the powers-that-be.

If current GoSL continued on with the Rajapaksarian system, or at least some of it, instead of trying to discredit the old regime and go 180-degrees in the opposite direction, Sri Lanka would not be in this jittery state. But guess Rajapaksas were keeping their economic system close to them and not sharing with new GoSL, forcing new GoSL into this precarious position.

Whatever the status of Rajapaksas’ bond issues were, the country had a large number of buildings and projects that came up. Current GoSL, however, wants to sell us to the Indian-Common-Market – a system we know for obvious reasons, that will be detrimental to our fragile Island.

Current GoSL, choses to work somewhat with Tamil-disapora money, and LTTE-Raj-Rajaratnam scheme of things, where LTTE-RR’s holdings will be released, courtesy of powers-that-be, for the Indian-Common-Market project.

We only hope and pray that old and new regimes will work together and save our Island from losing the natural refinement gifted to her by the Buddha.

Rajapaksas’ had a highly sophisticated robbery network. If current GoSL continued on with the Rajapaksarian system, Sri Lanka would have never come out from that jittery state. Due to the Rajapaksas economic system, today the country has to pay huge interests to China and other countries and tax we are paying today is not VAT but Rajapakshe tax. People with pea brain such as yours should not strain it by talking economics, etc.

You are absolutely right. His sophisticated overarching network of cronies and crooks benefited his family, increasing their ill-gotten wealth by many fold.

” However, their over-ambition did not sit too well with the powers-that-be.”

“From 19th century to the 1950s, 50% Sinhalese Buddhists were beggars on the roads”

When the British left in 1948, Sri Lanka was the second largest economy in Asia. From 1950s till today, 100% Sinhalese Buddhists have become beggars, begging every country on earth for loan and aid.
Looks like the Sinhala Buddhists have taken only Gautama Buddha’s begging bowl leaving the rest (all his wisdom) to others, they are not only begging the West but also China and India for loan, aid and grants. The Sinhala-Buddhists have converted the so called “egalitarian Buddhist” Sri Lanka with ancient history and heritage into a Barbaric Buddhist Beggars.

Sinhala Buddhist a good PR system. They don’t invade other people’s lands demanding autonomy and right of self rule and stealing from others that way. They are good in international relations and don’t go around lying.

Then why are they still occupying the Tamil Traditional homeland (N&E) where Sinhala is never spoken. After the British left in 1948, the Sinhalese are trying to rob the Tamil lands and that is why the Tamils want to separate from the thieves.

          Dear Ramona

When the Brits came all these Buddhist Sinhala lands you speak of was nothing but useless bush. In one of Leonard Woolf’s essays he noted in a covered area for his dogs natives also voluntarily lived like canines do – unwashed, dirty etc., Those were imperial days when the world accepted might was right. The British converted the shrubs, bush and jungle land to productive tea, rubber, coconut and vegetable yielding land. They certainly ensured there was a good profit for their capital, management, risk and so on.

The decent Brits also guaranteed Buddhist worship, rights etc. should be encouraged. They gave us a good system of education, roads, hospitals, the railway, a system of workable, efficient governance etc. They even taught our great Buddhist Sinhala leaders what Buddhism is – in a London library!!!!

          Show some decency, lassie.

            Backlash,

You certainly look at Lanka from the skewed perspective of an aristocratic British who even saw his own people as dogs and dredges of the earth. And what a strange angle to view Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It’s as if Buddhism came to light to you only after the British realized it, and used it to go back to their parlours and show off that they had a finer way of looking at things over Christian culture. Leonard Woolf obviously didn’t know what a Lankan farmer tilling his fields and planting vegetables looked like.

There’s plenty of historical documents telling of the green fields of grain and fruit trees that belonged to the self-sufficient natives that were burned to the ground by the British (and others). I and many others have been speaking about it constantly on CT, other with links about the horrors (so I’m not going to go all over it again….it’s common knowledge anyway). As per Buddhism, there are plenty of ancient and post-ancient documents and texts that speak about the Buddhism and its way of life in Sri Lanka.

“There’s plenty of historical documents telling of the green fields of grain and fruit trees that belonged to the self-sufficient natives that were burned to the ground by the British (and others).”

The above statement is her own imagination/visualization, it simply comes into her head from nowhere or rather hallucination. There is not even one historical documents telling of the green fields of grain and fruit trees (except some rice fields) that belonged to the self-sufficient natives that were burned to the ground by the British (and others). They were the rulers, if they had burned down those rice fields, then how would they feed the people who were living under their control? See how foolishly the tiny pea brain of Ramona the nut works.

“As per Buddhism, there are plenty of ancient and post-ancient documents and texts that speak about the Buddhism and its way of life in Sri Lanka.”

Buddhism was completely lost (died) in Sri Lanka, only the old structures were remaining. With the arrival of Siamese Buddhist sects that were brought from Siam (present day Thailand) to Kandy, Buddhism was re-established only around 250 years ago. The low country low caste Sinhalese went to Burma (present day Myanmar) and brought Burmese monks and established the Burmese Amarapura Sect in the low country. The Buddhism what we have today in Sri Lanka is very recent, brought from Thailand and Burma.

The European colonials who ruled Sri Lanka were the first to build tar roads, railway, tea plantations, Rubber plantations, coconut plantations, Schools, Universities, Libraries, Hospitals, medicine, Electricity, water, brought in cars, trolley busses, lorries, planes, Police, Army, Navy, Airforce, Courts, parliament, Cricket, football, netball, rugby, athletics, swimming, golf, cadetting, scouts, dams, furniture, cement, Radio, record players, movies, cinemas, shoes, shirts and slacks, bathrooms, toilets, hotels, bungalows, guest houses, glass, plates, pots and pans, fork and knives, flour, bread, cheese, cakes, butter, whisky, wine, cigarettes, elephant house soft drinks, banks, Pens, pencils, western music, weddings, telephone, telegram, post office, harbors, airports, etc. etc. etc.…..I could write a book on what they brought to Sri Lanka.

If not for the European colonials your people will be still travelling in Gon Karatta (Bullock Carts), eating Kavum & Aggala, chewing bulath and spitting all over the country side, your men will be topless wearing only an Amude, you women will be topless wearing only a redda and going to Pirivena where the akuru gura beating you with a pol pittha, the sick will be carried to the village Veda in the night holding a Pandama (Koppara Lamp), and sit under a tree/bush to relieve yourself.

As soon as the British left the country giving it to the Sinhala Modayas the down fall of the country started and ever since that day, the country went down the drain.

Even after doing all the good things for Sri Lanka without begging or borrowing even a single penny from anybody, still our uncultured, ungrateful, unappreciative Sinhala Buddhists while still using all the above that was given to them free still blame them without any gratitude. THIS IS THE CURSE THAT SRI LANKA IS PAYING TODAY….due to these bad, selfish, ungrateful, swollen headed, insanely proud, utter stupid Sinhala Buddhist Modayas.

Your people obviously had no idea of Buddhist egalatarian society cohesiveness and refinement, and so mired in your caste system, when the White people came to your shores, they were like gods.

I and so many others have written about the detriment of the Europeans on our civilization, and so I won’t go through it again. And we gave plenty of documented evidence, and modern analysis, including the resettlement of over one million families after independence.

                  “Buddhist egalitarian society”

Sri Lanka NEVER had a Buddhist egalitarian society, it only had a Buddhist Barbaric society. Even today the Buddhist monks behave like uncivilized Barbarians.

“White people came to your shores, they were like gods”

When the White people came to your shores, they were like Gods to you Sinhalese, that is why you adopted their names as your surnames like Fernando, Silva, Perera and so on.

“detriment of the Europeans on our civilization”

It is because of the Europeans that you are covering your top. The Sinhalese women were topless before the Europeans arrived.

“No, we didn’t bow down to them like gods the others in servility…”

There were much more colonial boot lickers among the Sinhalese than the Tamils. Almost all the Sinhala Elites (the ruling families) were originally the servants of the white masters, they were doing all kind of pakkali service to the colonials, and they even changed their religion, names and way of life (did not assimilate) to make their white masters happy. There were many Sinhalese who were the lap dogs of the British than the Tamils.

Starting from Don Stephen Senanayake (son of Don Spater Senanayake), through Dudley Shelton Senanayake, Sir John Lionel Kotelawala, Neelaperumalge Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike (previously Kalukapuge), Wijeyananda Dahanayake, Sirimavo Banadaranaike (of Mawalatenne Mohattala lineage), Thambi Mudiyansalage Junius Richard Jayawardene, Ranasinghe Premadasa (son of Richard Ranasinghe), Dingiri Banda Wijetunge, Chandrika Banadaranaike Kumaratunge, Mahendra PERCIVAL Rajapakse (Son of GEORGE Rajapakse), and Maithreepala Sirisena among our heads of government from Independence to date.

I find only three men who can claim to have been untainted by the `ADAPTATION TO COLONIAL SYNDROME`, in name, religion or way of life. They are W.Dahanayake, Dingiri Banda Wijetunge and the current president Maithreepala Sirisena.

However, as soon as the British left, most of these men changed from `BROWN SAHIBS` to `ARYA SINHALA BUDDHIST PATRIOTS` almost overnight. Men and women who occupied the front seats during Sunday services in churches became regular visitors to Buddhist temples and patrons of Buddhism overnight.

“We saw them as human and assimilated with them”.

The European colonials NEVER assimilated with the Sinhalese. They only hired Sinhala women to satisfy their carnal desires. The Sinhalese men gave their women (wives and daughters) to the Portuguese on hire (temporary basis) in exchange for a bottle of wine. The illegitimate children born to these Sinhalese women were given the Portuguese surnames like Fernando, Silva, Perera and so on.

On the other hand, when the Portuguese came to capture Jaffna, the last king of Jaffna Cankli Kumaran fought decisively with the Portuguese forces (an army of 5000) under the command of Felipe De Oliveriya (he was not interested in any convention or an agreement with the Portuguese).

Nonsense, they were given those names because the fathers married the mothers. If they were begotten over a bottle of wine, they would have had no other choice but to keep their mother’s surnames. Those days important Sinhala families readily gave their daughters in marriage to colonialists.

Tamils on the other hand were too servile to even lift up their eyes to the White man, and important Tamil families were only 0.1% of the Tamil population. Those begotten by White men over a bottle of wine, retained their Tamil names. Nowadays, because of perceived threat of Tamil extinction, Tamils expanded their Vellala base to about 10%.

For once, I think that you are right.

I’d go further and say that what I’ve heard it said that the Portuguese actually gave their daughters in marriage to the Sinhalese. I read that somewhere, and remember that the author impressed me as an honest man.

Please pardon me for not being able to substantiate my claims. This just isn’t my subject.

Have you actually read “Village in the Jungle”? Leonard Woolf clearly knew just how difficult life in the arid areas of the Hambantota District was. I definitely haven’t got the time to re-read the novel, but I remember the villagers of Beddegama commenting on the contrast between conditions in their own village, with those in Kamburupitiya where there were lots of green paddy fields.

By the way, all too many people in Sri Lanka frequently assert that Woolf wrote about Baddegama which is on the “River Gin”!

And what’s this about Woolf being an aristocrat? I thought that he was regarded with some disdain by even the Bloomsbury Group and the Fabians with Virginia Stephens (as she was) referring to him as “the penniless Jew”.

Let me hastily add that my own attitude towards Leonard Woolf is very positive. A good and decent man, if only because he was able to empathise with “Silindu” and “Babun” and “Hinnihamy”.

But RTF, I don’t want your views on all that; I know that it was in a quite different place,

I like the word “fear no one”. Dr. IC should live up to it if monetary control have to come to an order in Sri Lanka. PM should look after only fiscal control through parliament. Changes is happening but slowly. UNP/SLFP government should continue. Political culture should take this as an example and multiply. Leave him alone to do his job. Nobody, PM or anyone else interfere in his business unless a wrong doing.

Knowing the credentials of Dr. Indrajit Coomarswamy, which is inter
-nationally known, a Royalist and comes from a distinguished family, with connections, and why was he left out in the 1st place and instead Mr. Mahendran was chosen. Can CT elaborate on this as his sister,
Radhika could have put in a word as usually done in SL these days
and her non interference shows the calibre of the family .CB is not the place for him and the President should have given him in charge of all the Govt. financial institutions incl.CB to manage by grouping these institutions under one body and powers delegated to qualified persons to manage and report to him, and he directly reports to The President, PM and FM, thereby govt. spending could be controlled in an orderly manner and there will be transparency. The position he holds
now is a come down for him. While the Dr.is healthy and energetic the
govt. must get the best use of his experience and knowledge . The position of governor CB should have gone to the deputy,if he had no red mark, after all we are not managing a trillion dollar economy.

Like India, the govt. must go for highly qualified Sri Lankan expat
-riates,in USA,Canada and Europe, irrespective of their ethnicity and employ them to look after important institutions. India did this for the last ten years and the economy sky rocketed. Mr.Modi wholeheartedly
extended the employment contract for Mr. Rajan, Chairman Reserve Bank of india (RBI),a US citizen, who hails from Tamil Nadu and chided BJP Stalwart Subramniya Swamy who wanted no extension given because he is
    a foreigner.
There will be a time coming soon when people of all communities will
chase and spit at people who spread communal hatred and encourage
multiculturalism and move forward in the right direction, irrespective of who leads the march.

Diaspora Sammy, our new CB Governor said to media that his two main goals are

    * Increase Taxes to collect revenue to run Yahapalanaya .

    * And Increase the Interest Rates to curb Yahapalana suckers spending too much dosh.

One would say this is a double whammy for Yahapalana suckers.

Aren’t these goals diametrically opposite what the Yahapalana Prez has been mouthing off to the inhabitants.

Prez as late as Yesterday told our Dalits who cared to attend, that he is going to force the VAT creators to shove it up their asses.

Wouldn’t this create a conflict of interest between Sammy’s Goal to help Yahapalana and the Prez’s aim to stay in the job and keep Batalanda on side as well?.

This guy is a whiz kid, he is an economist by day, sportsman by evening and brilliant astronomer by night and then middle of the night he will be counting all the money he accidently took in the day from the central bank, Carlton sports club in the evening and department of astronomy in the night…………..Dr. Basil Rajapaksa. Currently he is resting in jail, in 1 year he will be well rested and ready to swing into action…………….robbing that is. :)

        Now you are talking…mate..

Basil by the way is out of Jail..Don’t get too serious about this Yahapalanaya.

Batalana Ranil and Mangalan may have promised your Vellala mates sun and the moon, in addition to Homeland in the North.

But they can’t do it without the Dalits, unless there is another riot like the one in the 80s which will give the excuse for Bedouin Prince and the West to send in the SAS.

But that is also getting a bit difficult with Vellala’s mate Cameron getting the ass..

Sane people should force Batalanada Ranil to do a deal with the Dalits to bring up their living standards and eliminate any discriminations for ever.

And get rid of the crooks who are now parading as big ass Yahapalana Ministers..k

      Dr. CP,

Tamil blood runs through his veins, so he is a Tamil,
and born to Hindu Tamil parents. His sister Radhika wears “tilak’ on
her forehead and follows Hindu culture & tradition. Dr. Indrajit has said in his speech that he left the country at the age of 11 and was abroad ever since and naturally his Tamil would have got rusty. I
wonder whether you were aware that SWRD, SJV. Chelva & Dr. EMV. Naga
(both of Federal party) could not speak their national languages when they entered politics. My father did the translation for SJV in the KKS electorate in the 50s. So Dr.one cannot erase his or her identity because they cannot speak their mother tongue.
Current NPC, CM, Justice Vigneswaran’s two children married two Singhalese persons and are you going to say that he is promoting Singhalese culture in the conservative Tamil North.

I speak Tamil. Does that make me a “Tamil”? Why is it important or even relavant? Apointee seems highly qualified, very decent. He also displays an unyielding love for this country. For me that is all that matters.

Why is it so important to have that “Tamil” tatoo on your forehead? Can’t you just be a decent human being? Like Dr. Coomaraswamy. Of course not. You cannot be anything else, but “Tamil”.

You need “Tamil” here. “Tamil” there. “Tamil everywhere. Including in your face and mine.

      Dr. Thiagarajah,
You are wrong to say that he does not to know to read or speak Tamil. He was a student at Royal from lower Kindergarten in 1955 to form 2 in 1962, in Tamil medium class, where the medium of instruction was in Tamil and you have to answer papers in Tamil except English Language. I was three years senior to him in school and knew him from his small days. Had he remained in Srilanka he would have got caught to swabasha medium for higher education and would have done his subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Mathematics in Tamil. We have played cricket together in UK and whenever we meet in UK we speak in Tamil as well as English. We had a discussion with him when I was President of Standing Committee of Tamil Speaking People about economic development of North ans East post war, and he presented a well researched and prepared account which highly impressed those of us who met him. So please do not come to conclusion without knowing the truth, which will make you look like a fool.

How do you know he is not fluent in Tamil? By the way why do you need a prefix Dr in English instead “Maruthuvar” மருத்துவர் in Thamil?

What are the differences between Tamil and Sinhala culture?

He is married into Sinhala family. As a மருத்துவர் you should know both stupid Tamils and stupid Sinhalese share the same gene.

Could you guarantee that your grandchildren aren’t going to marry Sinhalese, Chinese, Gujarati, Afro Caribbean, Pakistani, Cossack, Orang Asli, Bushmen/bushwomen of Kalahari desert, …….

Any sane minded person should celebrate diversity.

    Dr.CPT,
    You mean Laxman Kadirgamar.
LK was brought in by Chandrika, he did all the leg work to corner LTTE and destroy them.He didn’t do the necessary leg work for a lasting political solution even though he was a Buddhist convert.
Chandrika allowed MaRa,GoRa & BaRa to become heroes. But these heroes created a culture of ” fooling the masses and robbing the country”.

MaRa & Co and the gang of 4 and the likes of Ghanasaras are still alive and kicking claiming they are the real heroes and statesmen. With the support of the media and a section of the NGO s and TU s they are trying all the tricks to come back to power.

      Non PHD,
You are wrong. Chandrika wanted a prominent Tamil to join the cabinet to hoodwink the international community. She offered it to Neelan Thiruchelvam. But Neelan was a decent man who did not want to join the cabinet before Tamil problem was settled. He declined the offer and recommended Lakshman Kadirgamar. But LK was a cunning man. He came in with an ulterior motive of not representing Tamils but to climb the ladder at the expense of Tamils. He was lucky at that time when the international community including India were gunning for LTTE. He got the credit for all anti-LTTE propaganda and actions. With the soaring popularity among the Sinhalese, LK aimed at the top post of Prime Minister. Unfortunately for him Mahinda started a racist ptopaganda against LK, and Chandrika did not have the guts to stand up to it despite the support of JVP. This ambition caused his life and you know who was behind the assasination, who is still walking free.

So.. the President could not make a correct choice first time around and Dr.IC was totally overlooked also Dr.W.A.W.
Why did the President fail to see the first time around & suddenly opened his eyes?
At least one must thank Dr. IC for accepting the post having been overlooked the first time around.Thank him for being unassuming or if it was anyone else with such credentials would have brushed aside such an appointment.
So…. is it to say Ranil messed it up first time around with the appointment of AM? I CERTAINLY THINK SO.

Everyone, better leave Dr. IC alone for him to do his job and only ask him to be transparent. Nothing more.
He was a gentleman. A lovely Thrid Rower for CR & Sri Lanka and a good left arm spinner. Probably Sri Lanka Cricket will be interested in him as things are going badly for them after herath’s retirement.

Yes Dr. IC. lets have to right medicine prescribed at the CB to put it in a right order.

    Jehan.

I agree. One Swallow does not make a Summer.

Raju Coomaraswamy-Indrajits pater was handpicked by JR.for the work involved in the Colombo Plan.Later in the post 1977 period JR appointed him to the Greater Colombo Economic Commission which later became the Board of Investment[BOI].
RC died in harness in office,of a massive Heart attack. The LTTE was not around then for him to have been labelled as LTTE!
The Pitch is different now for the son RC.Literally, with overnight rain[LTTE] IT WILL HELP THE SPIN BOWLERS,and all 10[sans wicket-keeper] are maestros at spin.
Dayan is easily the best spinner in the country!

Absolutely, Indrajit you should not fear anyone. Cabral didn’t fear anyone, Mahendran didn’t fear anyone. Why should you fear anyone when you are “ONE OF THEM”. You know what “THEM” means. However we the citizens of Sri Lanka have to fear you and “THEM”

    Plato,
You’ve exposed DJ again. The way DJ has written can be described as ” rocking the baby to sleep in a cradle and at the same time pinching the baby to wake the baby up “

Smart patriot DJ is working behind the scene to bring back MaRa family & JO to power with the help of a rising global power.

DJ looks happy and confident that he is on the way to realising his dream. For me his write up reflects that.

As the British saying goes…the proof is in the pudding men!

Talk dear Indrajith is cheap. Let see you stand up to Mr. Clean’s machinations
as he struggles to make the SL balance sheet look impressive and he tries to borrow his way out of the gigantic crater left by the Rajapakse brothers.

People keep quoting the 1.6 Billion lost due to the bond fraud. Is it buried in someone’s backyard? Just asking.

The Rajapakse billions have still not been found.

When I was a kid and walked in with a toffee, my Dad asked me who gave it to me, because he knew I did not have the 10 cents for it.

Is it that difficult to figure out how Aunty Daisy got millions to buy multiple properties when only a few years before she was starving? Why not lock up Aunty Daisy and see if Shiranthi volunteers to save her Aunt?

I.Kumarasamy says “he fear no one” that is good jump start of political ideologies by two different class of politics of that “Gun Rule politics” of terrorism and politics of ballots by democracy that between Terrorism and democracy in the specific features of current situation arise since 2015 January 8th so-called “Rainbow revolution” initiated by MS, CBK and UNP-Ranil w…

Since 2015 January 8th replace CB ex-Governor of Arjuan Mahandara by I>Kumarasamy !

The objective situation has be permitted to review country of Sri Lankan since 2105 January has been created by extremely unstable peace and terrible state of ruin under MS regime.
Development stop! An investment from oversees become new disaster and doubtful. All this rule of economic of UNP led ruling inevitable cause extreme weariness and even majority social classes of many forces exhaustion of wide section of citizens of Island.

The task of GDP growth and development of day to continuation of production and servicers destroy by UNP politics of WAR footing ideology by US UK and Indian rule of influence of governances, which that call ‘GOOD Governance and Rule of Law’.

It is purely politics of foreign occupation the UNP neo-liberalism an ideology of surrender economic sovereignty, as well as political sovereignty of Nation of Sri lanka by UNP leadership of Ranil W…MS and CBK. They made gigantic destruction within short period of time in our 2600 years of civilization.

Instated of that healing wounds of war inflicted by LTTE Tamil Terrorist outfits by that has been widen by UNP collaboration with TNA ,JVP & MC destroy that achievement of economic revival by MR alliance since 2009 to 2015 January .

The defeated war of Tamil terrorism of LTTE regain by UNP support corrupting influences of higher salaries rogues from getting into higher position of authority and they like example that CB ex-Governor together with numbers of inept or dishonest sectaries penetrated into state since 2015 January 8th.This is evil legacy of UNP ” democracy ” led by Ranil W….

Well, indeed I Kumarasamy is not CB banker in locally or Globally ,that as for example that he is lack of ECB operation and ongoing situation in EU countries. The central gravity of economic development and its sovereignty is ours struggle for sustainability of democracy of economic progress against by the UNP neo-liberalism .

New emerging social forces in Sri Lankan want to shifting to new innovation path of capitalism that is totally different from Singhoporean path and model of “no mans Island capitalism”.

1 Our starting point will be possible to determined correctly that
the immediate tasks of economic and financial policy in the sphere of
strengthen state banks promoted productions of agricultural and
    Industries as well as services.

2 The introductions of property and income taxes satisfactory from
people that majority point of view.

3 Full employments is compulsory by state.

Needleless to say I Kumarsamy has to give current ECB data, I which collect recently the economic crisis in Italy as well as EU countries.

A The Monte Daschi Bank total bad debt 300 billion Euros.

B One oldest Bank in Italy bailout been approved by ECB.

C Italy Debt to GDP is around 130%.

D ECG printed almost 150 billion Euros.

    E EU is fundamentally FLAWED.
The regards Italy as a state of ruin collapse and decline statues of economy .

The Italy largest and old bank Monte Paschi Bank look disaster 33% loans is doubtful. Bad loans in US $ billions 51 or EU 47 billions. Such huge pile of bad loans. Not only that Credit Suisse and Deutsche Banks look terrible.

The so-called GSP plus is uncertain for Sri lanka, in future by EU and ECB system of are amid drastic vicissitudes in Italy . Greece and Spain bad debts are not recoverable by ECB in Brussels or Germany leadership. With out knowing this current development of EU countries current CB governor cannot move one step forward.
That is politics of day in Globally.

I have never met this Gent:Dr.Indrajit.He is being taken to task by some to the effect that he does not know Tamil!
The WIJEYARATNAM VIDYALAYA in Negombo,a Premier Hindu school was established by his Grandfather on the Maternal side.
There were many Tamils who pretended not to know Tamil-A sort of Class upper-lip.
Perhaps Lakshman Kadirgamer fitted this wrong sense of values.
There was a time when Plato too had this wrong sense of values; But,I corrected myself, when I reached Terra-Firma!
