Next President!

By Hema Senanayake

Hema Senanayake

I do not know who will be the next president. But I know the sublime qualities he should have. The word ‘sublime’ has been defined as “of such excellence as to inspire great admiration.” In that sense sublime quality is an excellent quality that inspires the great admiration among others. Do we have political leaders with this quality today? Before I continue with this discussion, let us pay attention to an important prediction made recently.

According to that prediction, “the hallmark of the coming six months would be disastrous that involves violence and criminal cheating of the general public.” This is not something forecasted by any astrologer. But this analysis has been made by a Buddhist clergy. His name is Venerable Rajagiriye Ariyagnana who is popularly known as “the monk walking on the path of Enlighted monks of the past” (Rahathun wedi-maga osse).

Here, what is important is not the prediction itself but the assumption used by the Venerable monk in his prediction. Being true to his religious belief, he assumes, that the level craving for political power would be highest in coming months, in all political leaders in the government and in the opposition. Craving is a most sinful action, according to Buddhism. So, when the craving is running so high for grabbing political power, so should be the occurrences of misdeeds, politics related violence and mass cheating. No political leader who craves for power will not bring this country out of the current mess even if elected to be the next president. If this assumption is true, I guess, it is true, then the above prediction will become true.

However, the only chance to change the course is to change the mindset of our leaders. Only people who holds the universal adult franchise could change their mindset. Or else people has the power to bring a totally new ethical man into the presidency. Such person with such excellence as to inspire great admiration might change the whole dynamic of the political power craving mindset of all politicians. In this regard Dr. Ajith Colonne has made a significant observation.

Dr. Ajith Collonne, who is now known to many, after he appeared on ‘Talk with Chatura’ TV program on Derana TV, is an expert or at least a very enthusiast of the Chaos Theory. In brief Chaos theory is a mathematical theory. “It (Chaos Theory) looks at certain systems that are very sensitive. A very small change may make the system behave completely differently. Very small changes in the starting position of a chaotic system make a big difference after a while. This is why even large computers cannot tell the weather for more than a few days in the future. Even if the weather was perfectly measured, a small change or error will make the prediction completely wrong” Wikipedia. Since, it is presumed that even a butterfly can make enough wind to change weather, and hence, chaotic system is sometimes defined as systems having “butterfly effect.”

Sri Lanka’s politics is a very chaotic system prior to 2015 presidential election. It seemed that Maithripala Sirisena’s crossing initially created a ‘butterfly effect’ that subsequently changed the whole system on January 08, 2015. This was well predicted by Dr. Ajith Colonne as far back as in 2013 by applying the fundamentals of Chaos Theory. His prediction came true.

The current political system is more chaotic than it was prior to 2015. Dr. Ajith Colonne now predicts that the next president is not in politics yet. That person cannot be a man who has better craving for power than current political leaders, therefore such a man might not be able to create a ‘butterfly effect’ to change the whole system. He must be a selfless leader who concern more with the needs and wishes of the people than himself or his family. According to Ajith Colonne, such person could be a person like U.B. Wanninayake who was the Minister of Finance from 1965 to 1970.

Colonne explains that Wanninayake’s son had passed a test held by the Central Bank in order to recruit officers to the bank, when Wanninayake was the Minister of Finance. After finding out that his son was going to get an appointment in the Central Bank, Minister Wanninayake did not want his son to get the appointment during his tenure as the Minister of Finance. Only such kind of unselfish man could create a ‘butterfly effect’ in this time around as people of the country in general do not endorse any of the current political leaders and they themselves know about it.

Who is that person? Let us do a search! Let us insists that major political parties must do the same.

We have been selling/leasing Srilanka part by part. Hence the Prime Minister/President of the country who has the largest share of Srilanka may be asked to overlook Srilanka too. He may be able to pump in money to save Srilanka, develop Srilanka and prevent the bribery and corruption prevalent in our country. He may of course share the profits earned, if any, rather than allowing our politicians to swindle it whole sale.

Whether anyone likes or not Gotabhaya is going to be the next President. If he is not given party nomination by SLPP, he will contest as independent and win. He is coming with the blessings of Jewish lobby and probably India may also back him.
My prediction at the presidential election poll is:
        1. Gotabhaya Rajapakse (Independent)
        2. UNP nominee ( Ranil W / Sajith P / Karu J)
        3. SLPP nominee ( Shiranthie R / Chamal R)
        4. JVP nominee
        5. Maitripala Sirisena (SLFP)
Tamils in north and east will most probably abstain from voting for anyone of them. I will not be surprised if they may vote for Gotabhaya. Recent outburst by Mano Ganesan at the cabinet meeting is a warning to UNP of alienating Tamils.

Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam, Your prediction is a reflection of your fear!
          .
          1) Gota will never contest as an independent. He has some room for him to wiggle out in case MR does not endorse his nomination.
          2) Shiranthie cannot muster enough SB votes. Period.
          3) MS is fast running out of ammunition.
          .
Who will win. Tamils should not care. It is India’s worry!
          .

Chaos theory does not quite yield exact results. It relies on subjective factors so that no definite prediction is possible. But it can identify various possibilities.
If one recognized a ‘sensitive event’ that could make a world of change, what about those that have not been.

The victory of MS was not caused by any butterfly. Much bigger animals were involved.

        Matilda Ellepola,
Rajapakses did a barbaric thing by sending megalomaniac butcher Prabhakaran to hell. If it is not for that barbaric act, we do not know how many innocent civilians could have been slaughtered by barbaric Prabhakaran.

Ungrateful people like you do not deserve to live in this country.

Getting rid of a mass murderer does not give the right to plunder the country. Blatant corruption & abuse of power cannot be condoned for the sake of gratitude. It’s blind faith, not Gratitude.

          Eagle Eye,
Even Rajapakse’s accepted now and told the truth that Pirabhaharan was not barberic and he did not slaghter innocent civilians. The whole world know that Rajapakse’s did slaghter innocent civilians. Even a large sunk of Sinhalese masses knew the truth and chuck him from the power in 2015. The barberic bomb blast of 21st March 2019 was also related to such cheating violence as predicted by Venerable Rajagiriye Ariyagnana which follows October 2018 plot by joint operation of Sirisena and Mahinda.

Chaos theory should not yield exact results; for, id it does, then, it is not chaos any longer! It doesn’t rely on subjective factors either. All factors can either physical or measurable and causally linked as well. But the difference lies in the unpredictability of significance of the variable at the given time and yet causing major changes at a future time. Pls read my longer comment for details.

Oh god ! butterfly ! do not even think about, because Maiththiri is the right example of flying from one place to another and finally discarded by every body !. He supported the 19 th amendment and crying for 18n th amendment. Politicians are power hungry animals not bothered about cheating their countrymen.

I just want to point out some practical differences. A real chaos system is not supposed fall into any pattern, but fully random. It is not worth for mathematical analysis. Weather is not completely random, but predictable only to some extent. Weather’s variables are too many to manage even with a supercomputer. A big system like weather then pose problem like Chaos. These are system dealt in science and mathematics as Chaos system.
But we know very simple systems malfunction. They appear to be chaos system for talk, but for practice it can be fixed and forced to normalcy. A simple four stroke engine runs without stopping when you turn the starter handle. The predictable actions of sucking the air, spraying the gas, compressing the mix, turning the dynamo, sparking, power generating, then flywheel bring back the piston to top and the repetition takes place. If the starter handle is the election, then the engine should run for five years nicely until the gas ends. Then you refill and turn the handle. This is not a complex chaos system, but if somebody added something to fuel then the engine will choke, tremble, throttle the gas, stop and behave abnormally. Then it looks like water added gasoline engine is a Chaos system. But practically by cleaning gas tank, problem can be solved. Lankawe politics is malfunction simple system, without a good fixer.
Once the Kid’s story’s favorite man, Avivivekapoorana Guru and his four disciples, Muddai, Madaiyan, Moodan and Milachchan( different types of Modayas) has to cross a difficult river. Then then wanted count them if all have crosses the river safely. One was missing. They brought somebody in to help. He noticed they all were counting leaving counting one out. He brought a Thirukkai Vaal and told to tell their name and count from one while he whips each once.

Avivivekapoorana Guru had 5 disciples. I think that you missed one. I guess it is Mallaiyuran or Mallung?
You may know the story about their counting themselves after they crossed the river when it was asleep

Yes; the name Savam could not even get into that guru’s disciple list. Because his fame is at UoJ the 12,000th one in the world. Couldn’t go below that, I guess!

After searching every part of the island, 6.2 Million selected the best candidates ,Dr Ranil and Maithri Sira to give them , All Clean Yahapalanaya where they can have Money Free Wifi, Jobs, and even Nano Cars which Dr Ranil promised to give them ,
And they could have done anything and everything which they wanted to do in Lankawe,
Even the hierarchy of our catholic Community were campaigning for Dr Ranil and Maithri Sira , hoping to enjoy all those Goodies which Dr Ranil promised ..

I am not sure about the Catholic Community, but the Rest of them I am sure are still with Dr Ranil.
And Dr Ranil is so busy Turbo Charging everything now to deliver all those promises in the next six months.

That is what I gather from the statements which come from not only Dr Ranil himself, but also from Dr Ranil’s ; best Brigadiers who made up in fact 30 % of his Cabinet who are now sitting on the Bench having a rest..

Mr Hakeem a very senior resting Cabinet Minster said yesterday that they had to release his Colleague Mr Kabir from the Bench, because Kabir has so much to do now, after Dr Ranil ‘s new promises after Easter Attacks.

I don’t think they have time to watch or listen to Chatura , Dr Collonne or even Mr Hema Senanayaka.

;;No time for experiments. It is a cruicial election for the country. A whole lot is at stake for the people. It is a do or die situation. please explain what NK track record is for helping SL. He has come out ofno where making promises that the people want to hear. Remember Maithri did the same but he was a known politician from a very long time.

It is better if the next President is not a political figure, otherwise he will be under obligation to current politicians.
He should be someone who would be able to explain his practical vision by himself in plain language, instead of hiding behind a manifesto prepared by others, so that people can decide independently, whether he is the right man.
What leadership quality should the next President have?
Mahinda is a charismatic leader. Ranil is a transactional leader. Maithri is a laissez-faire leader. What type of leader the country needs next?
    A transformational leader?

Chaotic theory certainly is the best model to explain almost any open dynamic system including politics. Even though the theory sounds somewhat strange it is actually it is fundamental to we experience nearly daily. The basis of the theory is that, contrary to general assumption that most changes proceed gradually & smoothly over time, “contingency” is the fundamental nature of almost all open natural system. The key term here is the CONTINGENCY. It has somewhat similar meaning of random but not quite the same. Randomness, in statistics, also imply a predictability in long term as in the case of tossing a coin with long term probability of 50% for either head or tale. On the contrary, contingency implies quite the opposite – variables that look so ineffective or invisible at a given moment can intervene to change course of the system in grossly unpredictable ways. The aftermath of Easter Sunday bombing is an excellent example contingency. Twists & turns of our life stories are governed by the concept contingency.
This mode of explanation is now getting popular in many historical science including history itself. This is one of the major challenges against Darwin’s theory of evolution which assume a very strict gradualism. But once the large natural catastrophic events such as a bolide collision causing the extinction of Dinosaurs and thereby paving the way for mammals & ultimately humans to dominate the planet taken into consideration it is cl;ear that Darwin’s methodology of gradualism and the philosophy of uniformitarianism fails.
In any case, I have to present two objections, one general & the other is specific: 1. I think the name “Chaos” given to very good theory needs be changed to “contingent theory”! 2. I very serious doubt whether SL politics, despite its current turmoils, is quite ready for an unknown leader. After one bad experience with untested leader (MY 3), SL voters should do everything possible not make same mistake twice particularly if the new guy was first introduced by “talk to Chatura” in an anti-social TV like Derana!

  • 2
    1

Even though the Chaos Theory is a good model to explain the behavior of social systems like politics, it is not very good in explaining the emergence of political leaders in countries like SL in which social system behave more like closed systems which can be managed by its own internal factors. I have very serious doubt whether a third party candidate can have any chance at all in the next election!

Sri Lanka will make the same mistakes over and over again. History repeats itself. The reason is people follow uneducated monks, with no expiriance in life, as they don’t have a family/pay rent/have children. These factors make a person grounded. (if you want a plumbing done call a plumber not a doctor.).
Dr. Shafi’s case where the monk became a expert on abortion,is another, thousands of people believing stupid arguments because of the dress. The dress would have been better on a manqueen.
We see this over and over again with asgiriya calling for stoning of muslims, muslims giving tablets in food for sterilization. all propergated by monks. monks being experts in law and order, fasting to remove elected ministers, etc…
Country will go back to be a colony, if this continues for long, as colonialism is coming back strongly, led by china, france etc…most probably a yogoslavia, broken up on religious lines.

UNP is/was Colonial Political party of comprodo classes of local corney capitalist out-fits. Since 1948 the day it was established that who ever leading members UNP are good or bad that is immertrail to us UNP never appear for the public interest . Indeed that UNP, its classes never representative of interest of whole public nationalities and their as nation aspiration since last 71 years. The 1956 was turning point of modern politics by MEP ousted that UNP in to 8 members in House .UNP has lost masses support even gradually 1977 by tynnery rule of JRJ -UNP later R. By an apply that myriad of one-Party political mismanagement in Sri lanka by JRJ has turn that nation sovereignty and Democracy of Island into mystification among people of Lanka.

Because of that bunch of UNP leaders including R-Premadasa, Lalith Ahlthimidili, Gamine Dissanyake Ranil Wickramasinghe Ranjan Wijeratne and Ronnie de Mel leds to mutual interest of people of Sri lanka.
That is what happening in Island under naked rule of UNP one and only leader of Wickramasinghe of R.. since 2015 Jan 8th.

It is futile to search for an ideal leader.

The leader could not be selected from a vacuum.

It is not possible to unnaturally create a leader.

Normally the country gets the Leader it deserves.

The system will swallow and not tolerate an ideal leader.

It will ensure that he is not different from the average when the average is very low

The system will ensure that the ideal become real and the real is loathsome.

My advice is not to engage in a futile exercise, but promote a revolution like french, Russian……..

I did identify two persons fitting, as of date, to be the President of this country. I have no hesitation in giving the names: (1) Mr. Rajadurai – A Professor/Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya and (2) Mr. Mayadunne – the Retired Auditor General. In this case, please don’t get me wrong. Mr. Mayadunne came into the Parliament through the JVP list for ONE DAY and “Resigned” the next day. Both of the above named are in the “National Intellectuals Association” that has put out a “Policy Plan” for the country; but yet to announce it’s “Work /Implementation”, work schedule. Incidentally, I have checked and found that both of them have no “membership” of JVP; but I feel they must be of “Opinion” that the best “Available” “Delivery” Vehicle” of such a “National Action Plan” would be this political outfit. Unfortunately, this NIA has not yet made any announcement of a candidate. Of course, it is only a hope.

The winner will be Gota.. He is the only hope for the country and the most suitable person in the current political climate.

Karu and Sajith do not have the charisma to fight Gotta and MS and RW have lost respect.

Foreign powers have now realized that it is inevitable that Gota will be the winner so do not be surprised if they will play their part to make the path to him.

In Sri Lanka, with Socialist Democratic emblem on the seal, it is not only the good Sri Lankan who decides who the next President & PM should be. It is mainly the international players, China, India and the US, who will manipulate the results to get an outcome they are comfortable with. All these have happened because of loose dreamy leadership and undisciplined & unpatriotic policies.
Imagine the 10 % of the population, farmers, small street venders, labourers other low income people, mainly in the south and east, still languishing in extreme poverty, eating at least one meal a day ( if they are lucky ). Malnutrition hitting at 15 %. Which leader is going to tackle these problems? Corruption is also major scourge with tentacles of vagaries reaching to all levels. Currently, Sri Lankan politics does not have good enough person take on these challenge the change the course of the nation.
May be, the Sri Lankan people have to live like these for few more decades and hope , a Moses like person will turn up.

      Jey
The poverty in rural as well as urban population is not difficult to address.
The only mechanism to do so is taking a new approach that has never tried before.
Once this is done, it will stay forever and there won’t be any necessity for people to go behind politicians for social welfare and subsidies.
For nearly 72 years, Sri Lankan politicians were in constant struggle to address serious issues that plagued the country, where a solution lies in simple initiatives.

The Sri Lankan President for 2020 (continued )
    ==============================
    Maithripala Sirisena
    ————————-
He is analytical and strategic, a sharp communicator. his strong writing, speaking and journalistic skills can help him convey a powerful message. But his caustically on critical issues can serve up haterade by the gallon. When threatened, can be patronizing and judgmental , making anyone on his bad side’s life into a living hell & perfectionism can stop this clever man from getting a great idea off the ground.

    Ranil Wickremesinghe
    ——————————
He risks his reputations as spokesperson for cutting-edge ideas and great at inspiring people, getting everyone woke and pumped to take action, excellent delegator, building an army of capable constituents that becomes a force to be reckoned with.
But unfortunately he is a Solo-star forgets to share the spotlight. Sometimes even take credit for other people’s contributions and ideas, forgetting that he is only the messenger rather than the creator, his ego can be his downfall.
    Mahinda Rajapaksa
    ————————
He has a super ablity to cultivate an air of mystery and magnetism, which attracts well-connected people and exclusive opportunities. If he use this for good, it can benfit the soiciety , but People are a little bit afraid of him for some reason. but if he uses it by responding and touching everyones heart around him ,people of all communities will give him loyalty and respect.
unfortunately his uninterest in cultures, ideas, or peoples outside his own experience and establishing a hierarchy that cultivates a climate of fear is a very intergral part in him , this will always lead to downfall.

This is the time to search for a young, energetic, educated, charismatic, robust, leader who will embrace all communities to develop and bring back the lost image of Sri Lanka and instill patriotism among all citizens to live as one nation of SRI LANKANS eschewing partisan politics of communalism. Usher in an era of peace, harmony and tranquility. Make mandatory every student to learn all three languages viz: Sinhalese: Tamil: English and have a comparative knowledge of all religions which will be a stepping stone erase the suspicion and animosity prevalent today. Our life is short so we should live as brothers and sisters with a fellow feeling. A person like Dudley Senanayake: U.B.Wanniyanake: T.B.Jayah: S.J.V.Chelvanayagam: Sir Baron Jayatileke will be an ideal choice for PRESIDENT / PRIME MINISTER who will be honest and transparent in their actions and steer the ship of state. Corruption: Nepotism: Injustice: Influencing should be eradicated. May God save our motherland and the noble triple gem bless our nation.

Giving leadership to the war is not a qualification to be a leader of the country. A fresh example is former president and former army commander. Both lost in the election. Having said so it is the one who can get the consent form the majority can be the president. This is a contest. whoever be clever to win the majority will be the president. Being just or honest can not win a election.J.V.P shown some kind of discipline in recent past but there is no development. Politics is a kind of art. Whoever can reach the majority of the voters can be the winner. Example American president. So it is not how good or bad but the ability to reach majority.
I personally not happy with the presidential system. I wish this system be abolished and come to the former parliamentary system. It looks everyone want to do that but do not do.
Contestant’s job is to win by any means. Voter”s job is to vote for the right person. If there is not a right person then voters have no choice except for voting comparatively good one. Or else they have to organise with useful organisations and appoint a candidate. It need a grassroots level propaganda to make a difference.
Anyhow end of the day we are spending money to a unwanted thing. What a loss?

I do not know who will be the next president. But I know the sublime qualities he should have.

The word ‘sublime’ has been defined as “of such excellence as to inspire great admiration.” In that sense sublime quality is an excellent quality that inspires the great admiration among others.

Do we have political leaders with this quality today.

*** The answer is a NO. That excellence is carried in a GENE sadly none of your people have it. The only thing they have is a Dominant Gene which is full of hatred.
Before I continue with this discussion

    *** Please dont.

In quoting lesser known figures, their views and predictions are we not in other words expressing disgust at what is going on? It is possible to elect a person who is “sublime” and is not from the mainstream. At the end of the day will he be another bull in a china shop, lamenting about the constitution and some of its amendments, say the 19th? (Rubbishing the 18th was an eye wash.). ONCE BITTEN TWICE SHY. One Gamarala is good enough for a lifetime. What therefore matters is some systemic safeguards as well, particularly to prevent abuse of power, rather than taking curative measures and throwing a politico to prison after he/she is out of office. As I have said in a previous comment, the President should not be from a political party. The present constitution debars a President from so many positions but not a membership or leadership of a political party. This lacuna paves way for two things. If HE also commands an absolute majority in Parliament HE can go to town. HE is likely to be the abuser of power. If HE does not command a majority in Parliament there would be clashes between the President and the PM. President Directly elected from the People? Yes. His role? To see that the public will is upheld at all times. HE would be a part of the check and balances in controlling the abuse of Government put up by a Parliamentary majority. HE would be in charge of the state machinery which shall be primed to carry out the policies of a Parliamentary majority. If the Parliamentary majority oversteps HE has the right to refer the matter to the PEOPLE who are supposed be sovereign in this country.
