No Confidence Motion Against PM: Canvassing Resumes

With the situation in the Kandy District and elsewhere returning to normal following communal unrest there’s renewed activity with regard to a no-confidence motion being brought against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe

The most vocal advocate of this move, UNP MP (Puttalam District) Range Bandara has now gone completely silent. However, Minister of Social Empowerment S.B. Dissanayake addressing a gathering at a ceremony in Liyanwala, Walapane, expressed confidence that many members of the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) would support the motion.

Although there is no constitutional provision to oust Wickremesinghe from the post of Prime Minister through a no-confidence motion, the success of such a move would be a severe blow to his credibility and legitimacy.

Given the current composition of Parliament and the likelihood that the TNA and JVP abstaining in the event of a vote, the Prime Minister appears to be safe. However, the Daily Mirror has reported that the UNP is seeking a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena who is also the leader of the SLFP ‘to discuss how to proceed with the unity government during this trying time.’

The SLFP, officially, has not committed itself either way. A few weeks ago Mahinda Amaraweera stated ‘the SLFP will do what is best for the country.’

Ranil Wickremasinghe is acceptable to all communities, not the SLFP. If the President is spineless to make a firm decision, it does not mean no confidence motion should be brought against Ranil Wickremasinghe. It is a fact that everyone missed an opportunity after the Ceasefire Agreement, but it was spoilt by Chandrika Bandaranayake and Mahinda Rajapakse when Tamils in the North abstained from voting. Otherwise there would have been a glorious revolution in the country with Ranil Wickremasinghe as President It is a fact that the people who brought the no confidence motion are engaged corrupt practices. .

RW is not acceptable to the majority of Sinhalese, as he has lost their confidence. He is neither interested in the Sinhalese or Tamils.Only interested in himself. The man cannot be trusted. How can people trust a man who refuses to divulge what his religion is?
He is said to be a avowed Christian according to those around him, but will never say that because in public he pretends to be a Buddhist. He will visit and worship Buddhist priests which anyone can do. Even Catholic Bishops worship Buddhist monks as a courtesy. RW is a humbug and has been found out. Very soon the whole country will hound him out.

Entirely agree with Nimal Fernando about Gough Whitlam. He was sensational. “It’s time” was his battle cry as he changed a conservative Australia into one of the most progressive nations in the world. As a speaker I hear, he was in a class of his own.

Ranil’s most fitting epitaph will one day be ‘ a man who could have, but couldn’t. ‘ As Nimal says it had much to do with guts.

You say that RW is acceptable to all communities! So according to you it does not matter whether he is a proven rogue and racketeer so long as the Tamils approve. What bloody cheek is that. For too long you people thought that the govt of the country is chosen by minorities. Well those days are over. From now onwards the government of Sri Lanka will be chosen by the majority of the people, and they are Sinhalese. You will do well to remember that.you Tamils who are a minority behave as if the country belongs to you! It is racism of the first order. We won’t tolerate that any more. You people can do your bloody tribal antics in the UK and Canada but not in S L. The effing YAHAPALANAYA that was created by the overseas Tamils will be brought down and relegated to a thing of the past.

Whether one likes it or not we have to accept that the country’s governance is in chaos/crisis. The best way to come out of it is going for a fresh mandate. Let voters/people decide. All other motions are just band aids plunging the country into further chaos.

How many mandate did you demand between 1956 and January 2015? During which time did we have a peaceful, progressive, serene, chaos free, crisis free, ….. governance?

You see you cannot live in peace, you start one more crisis before sorting out the previous ones, move on to the next crisis making project, self destruction, ………………

What is the matter with you?
You have an active restless creative team to create new crisis.
It is all to do with Sinha Le. Is it?

Mr. Ayathurai Rajasingam: You referred to “Ceasefire Agreement”. Who violated it and who kept a closed eye on such violations? You are old enough to assess that situation of thousands of such violations committed by the LTTE and the fact that it was signed by RW even without the knowledge of the then President and the Cabinet, gave the political edge to Sunethra & Mahinda. Then you also know how the strong arm of MR, his brother Basil was involved with “Bribing” another “Strong” man of LTTE – that Emil Kanthan, through negotiations with another MP at the time named Alles, against whom still a court case is pending to be disposed of. With this “Bribing”, who issued “Directives” to Tamils to ABSTAIN from voting? Do you not even know or remember, how a Tamil lost his arm for “Violating” that directive of LTTE. I have told about your “HERO” – RW in another comment connected with this article. Please read that, and you will probably make an assessment of this “Incorrigible:” PM, RW of whom you have so much “reverence”. For your information, even UNP “Insiders” are as of today revolting against him for the poor leadership he provides for the party and the country. My concern is that he (RW) through his cunning tactics deployed against MY3, in collusion with MR, coupled with poor leadership as PM of the country is providing the strongest support and assistance to REINSTATE that “TYRANT” kicked out by 6.2 million voters on January 2015. Please don’t live in the past, but try to face the reality of the present to make a better future.

      Douglas,
The Ceasefire Agreement was not signed by Ranil Wickremasinghe. That was a diplomatic move by Ranil Wickremasinghe to separate the LTTE and the Tamils, presumably to protect the Tamils. The Ceasefire Agreement was signed by an Army officer, a member of the UNP and the LTTE leader. Ranil Wickremasinghe just waved his hands. The Ceasefire Agreement was just a farce. This tactic was to isolate the LTTE. But it was unfortunate that Ranil was not given an opportunity or free hand to rule the country as President. He wanted to unite the country through economic development.

Ranil is the only politician who is/was never corrupt.
This is why all corrupt politicians are against him.
    He should be president.

Justice? That is a misnomer for you it seems.

Was all that went on with the Bond Scam and what followed with more Bond Scams, and all that is being done thus far by RW to protect his buddies, as well as his resistance to do the do the gentlemanly thing and resign, not CORRUPT?
Can you defend your statement that “Ranil is/was…..never corrupt”? ?

        CountryFirst,
Nothing has been proved against Ranil W, personally.
He has been betrayed by those he selected, in the Bond Scam.
The court case will bare the truth.

“Although there is no constitutional provision to oust Wickremesinghe from the post of Prime Minister through a no-confidence motion, the success of such a move would be a severe blow to his credibility and legitimacy.”

I do not see, other than Thero de Silva, anybody predicting that bring no confidence motion and defeating Ranil on that will change the effectiveness of Ranil. Thero is creating this fraud only because he lost on all suggestion by his poor understanding of 19A.
Ranil has already has lost 25 elections but still he is a man, who ran a minority government for six months, without defeat.
I don’t see a reason why the speaker & all party leaders agreeing to have this purposeless motion to go through the parliament.

So far, (before no confidence motion) I am not aware UNP MPs voting with Joint Comedy club in the parliament. Then, what is suggesting now that they would be doing it after No confidence motion? For long, the SLFP MPs have been threatening to go to Joint Comedy Club, but did not move.

The blockade to Ranil doing whatever he wants is from New King. This time new King faced the result of it in India and Japan. New King, who claimed in the LG election campaign that he refused to sign to transfer Colombo Pong Cing and saved it, told Indian Prime Minister that it was Ranil, who sold the Hambantota Harbor. In any case they both are rigidly owned by China. Not just the commercial flights of Air Lanka, but even a Hangbangtota peacock cannot fly over the Chinese harbor. China will not allow anything Lankawe to do in those two sites. Period

Just the way Ranil set date for the unimportant LG election to offer a threat UNHRC, this too seems to only threat to IC who insists on implementing the Resolution 30/1. This time it is from Joint Comedy club.

Mr. Ayathurai: You are completely wrong. It was Norwegian rep. Mr. Eric Soleheim who got this instrument signed by RW and took it personally to Wanni to get the signature of Pirabhakaran. There was also appointed a “Monitoring Committee” to oversee its implementation and they who reported thousands of violations by the LTTE. In your earlier comment you “Defend” that “Ceasefire Agreement” as diplomatic move by RW that “everyone missed”. Now when confronted with the actual facts, you try to slip through. Please name that “Army Officer” and the “Politician”, a “Member of the UNP” (as stated in reply to my comment) who signed that “Ceasefire Agreement” presented by Mr. Eric Soleiham. If you fail to “NAME” those two who signed,(as stated by you) you are by volition preventing the present day generation knowing the TRUTH.

“We have achieved the lowest growth rate in Sixteen years with this Yahapalanaya”

Whatever growth you think the country had prior to 2015 can be attributed to many factors. The war would have given some stimuli to the economy while it was sinking in high gearing.

Could you explain as to how the economy grew less slower in the periods before 2015. Remember Outstanding External Debt of the country was $ million in

      2012-$37,098
      2013-$39,905
      2014-$42,914
      2015-$44,797
      2016-$47,302
      not to mention domestic debts.

Please add whatever loans Hindia provided to this island under its export guarantee schemes from 2005 on wards which I suspect not included in these figures.

You should look at the economy as a whole for the past 70 years. Can you please do it and let us know your observation.

There’s no doubt that they can’t muster the numbers. But this is a blessing in disguise for the UNP to get rid of SB, Dayasiri, John S, and Susil Premajayanth. You can’t have a collective responsibility in the cabinet with these Jokers.

How to proceed in the current trying times is to impeach the President, who is on record as two timing snake in the grass. The next alternative is for the PM to invite him for a hopper night ( egg hoppers included ) . The next morning he would change colors and cross over to his original roots.
Such an individual who broke every promise to the public who voted for him, at the apex of corruption and deceit is not fit to be our President.

no confidence motion is a foolish move which will definitely fail, MR has showed his colours by not signing. There is no point in MR not signing, he was there, he has made statements favoring the motion. By not signing he has shown how opportunistic he is. A man who can sacrifice every one for his and his family’s sake. He has support but not a good leader
