No Female Speaker Allowed To Speak At UNP’s “Largest Political Rally In 25 Years”

The United National Party did not allow any female speaker to address the massive public demonstration organized by the party at Galle Face Green this evening.

Although women form nearly 52 per cent of the population and a similar proportion of the country’s total voter-base, the UNP did not acknowledge the female voters by giving a female speaker an opportunity to speak at today’s rally.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, in his speech at the rally today, boasted that it was the largest political rally organized by the party in 25 years. The party also often congratulates itself on the legislative reform that ensured 25% female representation at the Local Government level.

Several front-line female politicians of the party, namely Rosy Senanayake, Chandrani Bandara and Hirunika Premachandra, were present at the rally today. None of them was invited to speak by the organizers.

In addition to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, UNP MPs Sajith Premadasa, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Ravi Karunanayake, Sarath Fonseka, Patali Champika Ranawaka and Mujiber Rahuman spoke at the Galle Face rally today.

Please do not try to make a mountain out of a molehill.

It was a short rally. Main attraction was music provided by a superb band. People were meant to celebrate with music and dance.

Even stalwerts like Ranjan Ramanayake, Akila Viraj, Hakim, Baththudeen, Ravi Karunanayake did not speak. Had Thalatha was present she would have been given a speech.

    No Female Speaker Allowed?

Why? Did the ACJU and the Whshhabies took control, with the help of the Monks and Cardinals?

Just curious. Aren’t the females citizens?

Pick a nit, wit – for this article.

And what would you have them say?

The atrocities by Shirani, Eva, the list goes on ……. proportionally represented, in deed!

First question who is the author of this article? I wonder if there is any hidden agenda. Having said that I agree that Women should be given more chance as they were in the forefront of this struggled. Its time the grey heads of UNP recognize this. Also UNP should get the junior MPs to go out to the villages, not just stay in Colombo and make noise, but to knock on every door in groups and talk to the villagers.

Its time to change the image of UNP from being an elitist party to an all inclusive party.

You do have a point on the non representation of women speakers at the Rally. This after all is not a big issue.
But in recent times many women do not speak at political rallies including that of SLFP, UPFA,SLPP ETC.
When Pavitha Wanniaratchi addresses a political rally its absolute gutter style!.

    Ranil Wickramsinghe,

RE: No Female Speaker Allowed To Speak At UNP’s Rally

Politicians and Women – New Political and Societal Model?

It is like the societal model of man and women in marriage. Some politicians have become bribe takers in Sri Lanka and some women “whores”, in the West and rapidly in the East as well. So, there is separation of politician and women, in public Did the ACJU Ulama, the monks, the priests and cardinals advise you?

The old societal model was this: A young woman would trade her youth and fertility exclusively to only one man, and he in turn would be the workhorse and take care of her when she gets past her prime. This was a great incentive for Men to work and “become Men,” i.e. you got a great prize, a young, beautiful, and loyal wife. In theory, as we know, life isn’t perfect, but it was a model that worked. She does him a favor early on, by being a virgin / exclusive, and later on, he does her a favor, by dutifully staying and supporting her instead of leaving her for a younger woman.

The new (collapsing) societal model is this: Women whore around and waste their youth and fertility on the Chad/Tyrone bad-boy types, get walled out, get STDs, lose their ability to pair bond with Men, and rapidly accelerate their aging process with excessive alcohol and fast food consumption, and have no loyalty whatsoever to any Man, and only profess love and loyalty fleetingly, when they are desperate to marry. What good, decent, upstanding Man wants to pay an arm and a leg for something 30 (plus) other Men got for free? The incentive for Men to carry the burdens of modern Western women is completely gone

These are the words of a brainless chauvinist who has missed out that this is 2018 and not 1818. Modern women do not need to be paid by their men. They earn their own money (very often they earn it for their unemployed drinking husbands at home). If they are not employed, have they not brought up the children, cooked and kept the house clean, as their part of teamwork in the partnership? In case you have not realised, women are not the only humans that are growing old. Do you believe men get more handsome, their hair fuller, their skin smoother and their tummies smaller and more muscular at growing age? Look into the mirror and face reality! Who speaks of the incentives women could demand for staying with a degenerating henpecked husband, having got to act like a lifetime servant and slave? In case you are not aware, there are far more men drinking than women (i wonder why not more women are alcoholics having husbands like you). And for women to „whore“ around it needs men to whore around too. You better check the constitution. Women and men are equal nowadays. Welcome in the 21st century.

        Jo,

The thrust of the comment was that the many politicians and many women have walked away from their responsibilities, and this of course include men. The issue is responsibility and accountability. Then there is no trust, both in marriage and politics.

People elect an MPs for one party ( UNP, SLFP etc), and they change sides like hookers for a fee or for a ministerial portfolio, Some women leave a man and kids for a different man. Some me do the same. It is question of responsibility and ethics. The politicians take oaths to fend the constitution,. and take unconstitutional acts. See what Sirisena and Mahinda and cronies have done.

Men and women take marriage wows. It means very little for many. In the USA, 50% of the marriages end up in divorce, and 80% initiated by women, for various reasons. So women have taken to careers for economic independence. Why should a man get into a marriage when the probability of failure is 50%, and he will be stuck with alimony and child support?

Fortunately, the situation has not deteriorated in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, men drink beat up their wives, sends them for slave labor in the Middle East, and still stay married.

Is it this Sri Lankan male “Culture” that kept women out from the UNP stage? Or is it like what the ACJU Ulama , the Church and the monks would say, a women’s voice will make the males go berserk?

I agree, there is a decreasing willingness in taking over responsibility, not only in politics and marriage but in any other area aswell. That marriages break by mainly the initiative of women in the western world maybe true but the men‘s behaviour should also be considered as a possible reason. I am not friend of the proportion of females in politics or business and I guess it is both, the male culture aswell the fact that women have no convincing arguments, that kept women out of the UNP stage.

        Jo ,

Recognize and Avoid Women Who Are Damaged Goods. If they are not damaged, then all right Fortunately, Sri Lanka has fewer damaged girls, thanks to the culture. In Sri Lanka Samiya Biridage Deviyaya, Husband is the Wife’s Deity Not in the West

“and have no loyalty whatsoever to any Man, and only profess love and loyalty fleetingly, when they are desperate to marry. What good, decent, upstanding Man wants to pay an arm and a leg for something 30 (plus) other Men got for free? The incentive for Men to carry the burdens of modern Western women is completely gone”

Yes, avoid damaged goods, low-quality goods that do not meet the specifications.

I will be surprised to see a female speaker being given prominence at any UNP rally because none represent RW’s Royal College old boys clique. Now had Royal being a coed school and not the boys club mafia, I am sure there would have been few in RW’s coterie to be key women. If there is a woman among this closely knit circle, obviously that person will be a close relative of RW’s. I can say this for certain that this man RW will never learn his lessons. He will very soon shoot himself in the foot. I wish he would shoot himself by giving a chance for a young leader like Sajith to take the baton of the UNP leadership because the UNP lacks a base at the grass root. If there is an election, the result for RW is obvious if not for the minorities propping his vote. At present, I seriously doubt the minority vote because RW and this UNP team has hardly done anything meaningful to our masses. Our youth are running away from our country in droves as they see bleak future in this country. We are losing our labour force as they leave seeking greener pastures overseas. Our academics who go to further their education are reluctant to return. Our intellectuals are sidelined to those advisors who are quacks in their fields they claim to be professionals. Our expatriates who see a no future here do not even want to retire here. Our graduates are unemployed. Those youth that are qualified and thankfully have jobs, do have jobs outside of their major concentration skill and talent base. So their productivity goes a waste and cannot contribute efficiently to our GDP. Students who have qualified exams and deprived of a university education have no means to get a privately funded education. Youth evicted on to the streets from schools have ventured into undesirable trades in crime. Is this the Sri Lanka that we want our kids to grow up?

Today you were tongue in the cheek about abolishing the Executive Presidency, these Aries born men never learns that putting your hands into fire burns ,it’s their biggest weakness.
Mr PM ,please give us a break, our people won’t buy that ,to wait for your party to first win The Next Presidential Election and then the General Election, get your majority to abolish the Executive .people have done with these Myths ,these fifty days The people even went out and bought the constitution read it through ,lot went on line and did their own research ,you are dealing with a 100% educated population
Sir, it is crystal clear None of you ,or SLFP or SLPP want to abolish the executive and we see certain medias giving extreme prominence and very charitable free airtime to champions who are executive devil’s advocates willing to die to keep the executive ,any politician or anyone wanting to
keep it are enemies of the people and some have vested interest in it.(Sure impunity to the core)
Please go ahead with JVP and move to abolish it once and for all.
If oy can’t get the support in Parliament by numbers ,then stop all elections and call for peoples referendum ,Azad Sally was very concerned about the cost ,of refetrendums , it’s okay there is enough public funds being pilfered by the minute .

Someone mentioned the Malaysian scandal. There is a Sri Lankan involved in the fraud too! He is Dubai based racket master who did not pass his ALs in SL but poses as a PdD for the uninformed.
He is an expert in paper corporations that move money around. The Malaysian scandal is a paper fraud and fortunately for the Malaysians, the US FBI started an investigation. This investigation did not start in Malaysia. All the files were hidden and the Attorney General under PM Najib said there was no evidence of fraud.

Maybe if the FBI started an investigation about a Sri Lankan transaction, we might be lucky to have the real facts and culprits come out.

Until then, good luck with the present Attorney General who got a real tokka, from the Supreme Court for his dumb argument about Presidential prerogatives, superseding the Constitution.

Is that 25% in LG is only a gimmick to thaw EU’s GSP+? Why can’t they get 25% in provincial & Central too?

    Nic,

What are you inferring out here with the “Butterflies” comment? Whether they are humans or butterflies, they cannot violate the social justice system
Being butterflies don’t allow them to make parliament represented only by men. Women are a recognized division by the law. They need their representation. Period.

UNP’s female Ministers have done nothing for women and children. This includes Chandrani and Thalatha. There is a court case against Hirunika for abducting a man. Women council members of CMC have raised several physical abuse allegations against male counterparts and officials. So far Rosy the Mayor hasn’t done anything. Obviously, they are like nobody. So, who cares?
UNP is all against Rajapaksa’s nepotism. Therefore, they can’t promote their wives too.

Ranil has more secrets , about women, that can not be devulged here. The same source knows it. Ranil began bond scams in after 1994. President had said, Ranil this time delayed the bribary and corruption act to punish the Bond thieves and Ranil and his palanaya delayed it indefinitely.
I here, there are foreign tourists inside the Parliament who wish to join Ranil in his govt. Ranil is also now thinking how to get that fellow inside the cabinet (GODs Natha and Suniyan). There is a VEDA mahaththaya inside the parliament. Dilan PErera had asked media to not to write about their frictions as he was waiting to join the new govt just some days ago. The same Veda Mahaththaya has askes Ranil to consider joining Maithripala Sirisena again. On the other hand, some one has informed Ranil via the foreign tourist that Ranil to not stay long. You

Maybe the other My3 doesn’t like pretty ladies like Rosy and Hirunika taking the spotlight, it cannot be that the other My3 is worried about her man being attracted to those pretty ladies, so there is no problem there. I think suddenly the other My3 is pulling strings and making RW dance, is the other My3 paid by the NGOs? I mean give the man (Ranil) a break if it is not one thing then another.

What a farce. So sticking a woman or two somewhere in the mix somehow solves all problems? Typical social engineering that tries to put everyone into a mould – model citizens that are easy to herd and rule.

The female of the species in my country do not need affirmative action. It is an insult to the strong yet soft, free-willed yet humble generations of women I have known and loved.

The duty of the leaders is to ensure that every individual man or woman, race/creed/cast/color (or whatever other classification with which you can divide and conquer) is empowered and free. Teach our daughters and sons to respect truth and human value. Then sustainable development will naturally follow.
